“The Gospel is not some vague palliative, it's a man raised from the dead.” The Pro-Life Movement has, for several decades now, remembered the dead, principally those children lost to abortion, with a hope for a new culture of life raised from those tragedies. And yet the story of the Pro-Life Movement is primarily told by its enemies, who regularly reduce the movement to caricatures and sound-bites, leveling into a collection angry objections and hostile tactics. The story of the pro-life movement––both its past and its present unfolding into the future––has not really been told as a coherent and full narrative. And so my guest today and his collaborators have set out to chronicle America in the age of abortion and emphasize the response of the pro-life movement as an unparalleled model for social and political resistance. It is a work that seeks to reckon with our dead in obedience to the man raised from the dead. Praise Her in the Gates – Dispatches for a Pro-Life Nation is a longform (multi-episode, multi-season) audio journal released on January 22, 2025. Its creator, the artist Brian Kennedy, joins me today to talk about the original work and what it offers to us, whether we count ourselves as members of the pro-life movement or not. It is a work arising from the Catholic imagination, with which things otherwise neglected or forgotten are perceived, revered, mourned, and praised.Follow-up Resources:Lydwine Substack, home of Praise Her in the Gates (first episodes released January 25, 2025)“The Ghost Outside,” essay by Brian Kennedy“Vandals at the Golden Gate, Part One,” essay by Brian Kennedy“How Americans Understand Abortion, Part 1, with Tricia Bruce,” podcast episode via Church Life Today“How Americans Understand Abortion, Part 2, with Tricia Bruce,” podcast episode via Church Life Today“Mary O'Callaghan on Disability Selective Abortions,” podcast episode via Church Life TodayChurch Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. Hi Loves! In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing Lisa Castro. Lisa Castro has long been interested in spirituality, yoga, and meditation as a means for self-improvement. She recalls always having a sense that something was missing or a little bit off – even when things were going well. Now she knows that the piece that was missing was a connection to the divine. Since incorporating goddess wisdom into her life, Lisa has made massive shifts like ending her troubled marriage, leaving her high-paying corporate job for creative pursuits, and overcoming anxiety. She has also taken this time to rediscover her sexuality and prioritize the pursuit of pleasure. Lisa has identified and broke habitual patterns that kept her repeating the same toxic relationships and was able to attract and sustain a healthy, loving partnership. She learned how to stop trying to fix others and focus on caring for herself and her children. She knows that when the goddess is happy and cared for, she can easily extend the love and light to others, as well as attract all that she desires. Lisa left the corporate world in May 2019 to pursue her interests in writing, goddesses, and wellness. Since then, she has launched a successful column, Praise Her, that provides practical goddess wisdom on Human Parts, a Medium Publication. She is currently working on a book that will help women apply goddess wisdom to their everyday life. Also, a certified yoga instructor, Lisa teaches Goddess Yoga classes and workshops. She enjoys helping students connect with their inner goddess through movement and meditation. She considers herself an advocate for women’s health, happiness, and spirit. In today’s episode Lisa shares with us how and why we should cultivate goddess energy. We will learn that the goddess is not an entity outside of ourselves, but rather an aspect of our highest self. We will also learn more about the goddess Aphrodite and how we can work with her energy to cultivate our own unique beauty and radiate confidence. We'll learn that beauty is not an aesthetic, but a feeling. All my love and blessings!!! The mother’s calling. The Bible not only tells us of the blessedness of mothering but also gives some clear instructions on how to do it. Today we are going to look at the big picture of motherhood that will help us run this mothering race with perseverance and look at 3 instructions for mother’s in the Word of God. Big Picture Scriptures for Mothering Psalm 127 Psalm 128 Proverbs 31:10-31 Proverbs 14:1 "The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down." Proverbs 14:1 Three Biblical Instructions for Mothers Be learners and doers of the Word - Titus 2:3-5, Isaiah 50:4 Instruct our children in the ways of the Lord - Ephesians 6:4, Deuteronomy 6:4-11 Discipline our children to teach about the gospel, authority, and for your children to grow wise - Hebrews 12:5-7, Proverbs 29:15 Who can mother? The vision of motherhood is greater than our own children. The essence of motherhood is about revealing God to the world - as all things are. The world is waiting to know the caring heart of God. "Every woman can blossom as a mother, wither she gives birth to her own children or not. All she needs to do is allow the nursing instinct that God has put within her by divine creation to flow from her life.” - Nancy Campbell The Power of Motherhood Examples of mothering others: 1 Timothy 5:10 Proverbs 31 Romans 16:13 For God and Through His Grace There is no perfect mother. We mother for the glory of God and through His grace. There is forgiveness when we fall short and grace when it's difficult, and joy when we rely on God. Mothering is a sanctifying work completed with diligence through the power of Christ. Recommended Resources There are so many resources I talked about on the show today! Amazon links are affiliate links meaning I receive a small commission if you purchase through my link. It does not cost more for you and I only recommend products I truly love. Praise Her in the Gates - Nancy Wilson A very practical read through biblical motherhood. Sick days, holidays, education - she covers it all. Some of the content may challenge our worldview, but I encourage you to use is as an opportunity to study God's Word on the topics! Praise Her in the Gates: The Calling of Christian Motherhood $10.71 By Nancy Wilson Shepherding a Child's Heart - Tedd Tripp This book laid foundational biblical principles about discipline for me and my husband. I was challenged and humbled by my view of what discipline is and why it matters. I learned how to share the Gospel with my children through this book. Shepherding a Child's Heart $8.87 By Tedd Tripp Radiant - 50 Remarkable Women in Church History - Richard Hannula This has got to be one of my favorite, most compelling books I own. I am shocked and humbled by the faith of these women and how God used them to advance His Kingdom. We are truly living in blessed times because of the faith and perseverance of the ladies. I will be doing a podcast in the future about some of these women. Radiant: Fifty Remarkable Women in Church History $18.00 By Richard M. Hannula Instructing a Child's Heart - Tedd and Margy Tripp This book is so practical in how to instruct our children in the ways of the Lord. Tedd and Margy give great examples and remind us of the foundational truths of why we do what we do as God-fearing parents. Instructing a Child's Heart $11.47 By Tedd Tripp, Margy Tripp The Power of Motherhood - Nancy Campbell This is an intensive workbook that takes you through Scriptures about all areas of motherhood and femininity, including things like birth control and pregnancy. I have not yet worked through the entire workbook and so I cautiously leave this link here - but wanted to share it because I referenced it in today's show. I caution you to take things you have questions about to the Word of God and to your husband and to your pastor. If anything this is an excellent book to help us look through all areas of womanhood and discover God's purpose, desires, and plans. POLARITY Polarity - Masculine and Feminine - Night / day. - Black + white / color - Up / down - hot / cold - east / west - moon / sun This is what creates ATTRACTION - magnets. (0:00) 2. Stop Hoping For Completion If you’re not doing it right now - probably won’t ever do it. Success fantasies - can be the REASON you hurt and the reason you don't take action. (0:00) 3. Live At Your (REAL) Edge (don’t fake it) 32,850 - number of days from birth to 90 y.o. Lean just beyond edge. Small gains. Gym - increase slowly. Safety path (educate 20 / work 40 / retire 20) vs. Danger path (risk it all) (0:00) 4. Never Change Your Mind to Please Your Woman Or anyone for that matter Safety mechanism - b/c if your idea fails = ALL on you. If change mind = safety of blaming someone else. BUT if it succeeds = you DON’T feel confident (not your idea). Add stock to your own decision making skills, not others. (0:00) 5. Discover Your Purpose Today Know Thyself - True North - You and Only You Can Do! Discover your STRENGTHS today! Martin Seligman “Know your strengths, use them often” Authentichappiness.com - strengths finder (24 sig. strengths) (0:00) 6. Enjoy Your Friends Criticism “You are the AVG of top 5 people you hang around most” We can be too close to ourselves / need objective perspective Someone who knows you WELL - willing to call you out. (0:00) 7. Do Not Use Your Family As An Excuse S.E.A. - travel saw people from EVERYWHERE. Hostel. People who “didn’t fit mold” (eat pray love / infinity sign tattoo / granola hippie whole foods) Are you willing to give up excuses? Everyone has eliminated the excuses traveling = why people get along so well! Never going to get easier. NEED to start TODAY. (0:00) 8. Praise Her #17 - Praise Her Freely Men grow throw challenge (jump fence / lift weight / dare you to X) Women grow through praise (X looks great on you / so pretty) Both superficial - deeper in relationships. She NEEDS praise form you. NO MR. FIX IT. Just wants to be listened to and encouraged - not fixed. Speaking to your woman, call glass half full not half empty. Praise qualities you want to see GROW (0:00) 9. Live As If Your Father Was Dead Baggage from dad - Kid who looked to others of what to do. “What we should do” - get rid of those expectations (0:00) 10. Hear Her Complaints As Warning Bells #31 Her Complaint is Content Free When a woman “nags” should be taken as “get it together” Trying to make you better. Deeper issue. Not that you didn’t clean the garage when you said you would 2 weeks ago - that she can’t trust you + you don’t keep word. No follow through - flake. Lack of integrity. Your word is your bond - your masculine core - your integrity - the polarity that’s attractive!
