We're all getting ready to hit the road for vacations and/or tours, so we thought we would spend an hour analyzing our own particular form of crazy: traveling with small children. Why do we do it? When don't we do it? And what's the very worst that can happen? (Hint, it involves starving children and diesel fuel). In our luggage this week, are some of the really wonderful novels for children and adults published by Ignatius Press. We're so grateful for the care and attention Ignatius devotes to publishing contemporary (and classic) Catholic fiction, and love recommending their books to others. Right now, you can save 35 percent on all Ignatius novels (and 65 percent on e-versions) with the code VisitationNovels. Some of our favorites that we mentioned on the show include: Charis in the World of Wonders, If You Can Get It, The Spear, The Vanishing Woman, and the Louipo series.Let's Meet in PersonIf you're in the Dayton/Columbus/Cincinnati area, pencil in July 19 on your calendar. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageHave you ever wondered why all that positive visualization hasn't transformed your life? Despite your vivid daydreams of success, you find yourself still sitting on the couch, no closer to your goals? Motivation science has the answer, and it's not what you might expect. This eye-opening episode dives deep into Gabrielle Oettingen's revolutionary research on motivation as explored in her 2014 book "Rethinking Positive Thinking." We uncover the counterintuitive truth that simply dreaming about your desired future can actually make you less likely to achieve it. When we engage in pleasant fantasies about our goals, our brains experience a false sense of fulfillment that drains our motivation to tackle real-world challenges. As Oettingen explains, "By fooling our brains into thinking we're already successful, we lose motivation and energy to do what it actually takes to become successful."But don't despair! We explore Oettingen's powerful alternative technique called "mental contrasting" - a method that transforms wishful thinking into actionable energy. Rather than abandoning your dreams, mental contrasting teaches you to pair your positive vision with a clear-eyed assessment of the obstacles in your path. This balanced approach has been scientifically proven to significantly increase motivation across numerous domains, from weight loss to academic performance to business negotiations. Through mental contrasting, you can become both a dreamer AND a doer - someone who not only imagines a better future but takes concrete steps to create it.Ready to stop daydreaming and start achieving? Visit teammojoacademy.com where we've gathered everything discussed in this podcast along with additional resources to help you apply these concepts immediately. Let's put theory into action and get your mojo on!Key Points from the Episode:• Merely visualizing success puts us in a state of "bliss, calmness and lethargy" that saps our energy• Fantasizing tricks our brain into thinking we've already achieved our goals• "Dreamers are not often doers" - positive visualization without reality awareness doesn't work• Mental contrasting is the solution: visualize both dreams AND obstacles standing in your way• This technique energizes us by creating "the necessity to act"• Studies show mental contrasting has helped people quit smoking, lose weight, improve grades, and enhance relationships• The key is becoming both "dreamers AND doers" rather than just dreamersCheck out our show page at teammojoacademy.com for everything discussed in this podcast and other great resources to help you get your mojo on.Other resources: Want to leave a review? In this episode of the Self-Employed Life, I had the great privilege of speaking with Nesha Pai, author of the book “Overcoming Ordinary Obstacles”. Nesha shared how she transitioned from running a fully remote accounting firm to empowering others to pursue their boldest dreams. She further explains how personal tragedies deepened her mission. We explored the difference between courage and bravery, the “Four C's” framework she uses to guide dreamers into bold action, and how cultivating personal style and daily confidence practices can help us show up as the person we're becoming. Nesha's story is a great reminder that taking courageous, intentional steps—especially through life's hardest seasons—can lead to extraordinary transformation. Nesha Pai is the founder of Pai CPA, PLLC, a fully remote bookkeeping firm in Charlotte, NC. She started her firm in February 2011, and was one of the first in the industry to create a fully remote office model, along with giving employment opportunities to primarily to stay-at-home moms. As a single mom, sole owner, she grew from one client on her kitchen table to over 72 with revenues in the multiple six digits. In January 2020 , Nesha published her book “Overcoming Ordinary Obstacles”, which won the award in the Multicultural Non-Fiction category by the 2020 competition of the American Book Fest. She is currently known as an international speaker, activating women and entrepreneurs to go boldly into the life of their dreams by cultivating the right tools to overcome the obstacles in their way. Nesha is a recent breast cancer survivor and was named one of the Top 50 Infulential Women in The Mecklenburg Times (2020 and 2024), on of Charlotte's biggest media publications. President Trump's order that would end automatic citizenship for the children of many categories of immigrants has been blocked from going into effect by three separate federal judges. Those injunctions have been upheld by three separate appeals courts. So Thursday's case at the Supreme Court was really about two questions: Whether the constitution guarantees birthright citizenship and whether judges can issue nationwide injunctions against federal policies.University of Virginia law professor Amanda Frost, author of the book You Are Not American: Citizenship Stripping from Dred Scott to the Dreamers, followed the arguments and breaks down clues that point to the Justices' thinking. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Whether it's attempting to overturn birthright citizenship, effectively stripping citizenship from American children, or claiming Alien Enemy Act war powers under an imaginary invasion, Trump's anti-immigrant moves are outlandishly unconstitutional. They are also being met with significant pushback from judges, even conservative ones. On this week's Amicus, Dahlia Lithwick is joined by Slate senior writer Mark Joseph Stern who explains the landmark ruling from a Trump-appointed judge in the southern district of Texas that declared the administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act is unlawful. Next, Amanda Frost, University of Virginia law professor and author of You Are Not American: Citizenship Stripping from Dred Scott to the Dreamers, joins Dahlia to explain what Birthright Citizenship really means, and all the ways Trump is working to redefine what it means to be an American, including stripping citizenship from children and denaturalizing adults. Legal experts Gabriel Chin of the University of California, Davis School of Law; Amanda Frost of the University of Virginia School of Law; Kurt Lash of the University of Richmond School of Law; and Ilan Wurman of the University of Minnesota Law School analyze the legal challenges surrounding birthright citizenship, explore the constitutional and historical arguments on all sides of this debate, and discuss its broader implications for immigration. A lot of people come up with ideas, talk about goals, and imagine what success could look like—but it's the ones who actually take steps, even small ones, who make something real happen. Dreamers often stay in their heads, while doers deal with the messiness of trying and failing and trying again. It's not that one group wants it more, it's just that action turns possibilities into something you can actually build on. The gap isn't always motivation—it's motion. Steve Schuyler is the founder and CEO of JavaTwist, a Wisconsin-based beverage startup blending coffee with fruit juice. I am breaking format to share my conversation with Ben Mulroney this morning on his national radio show on the Corus network. I offer six transformative ideas for Canada on how we can thrive in the next decade. Forget the partisan debates and dive deep into bold ideas that transcend politics and policy. Here's a sneak peek at what you'll hear: 1)Unlocking Canada's Tourism Potential: From a place to visit to the place to be. 2)Old and New": Powering the Future with Resources and Innovation: Can Canada responsibly harness its natural resources while simultaneously building a cutting-edge, intellectual economy? Here is how. 3)The Untapped Power of Canadian Content: Let's export it to the world. There is even an idea that CBC should be less dependent on the government in power to survive and thrive. 4)The Long Game on Health: AI as the Future of Care: Imagine a healthcare system revolutionized by AI! 5)Reimagining Education for a Competitive Future: Ideas not ideology. It's time to focus on the most essential skills: collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. 6)Rewarding the Dreamers and Doers: My idea for making Canada the Entrepreneurial Epicenter of the world. This isn't just talk; it's chatter that matters. An aggressively optimistic roadmap for a brighter Canadian future, one where our destiny is a matter of choice, not chance. Share your thoughts, and if you have time rate and review my podcast. Tony
