Why haven't you made your dreams a reality yet? You might have a million reasons lined up, but they're just excuses, robbing you of your life! If you're broke, making fun of a millionaire: this one's for you. Welcome once again Dreamers, to the Do it with Dan Podcast! The place to truly dream with your eyes open. It's time to expand our experience with some more great discussion on the power of the mind in all things. Whether you want to manifest more wealth, emotional abundance or love in your life; this is the podcast for you. This week, Dan sits down with the incredible Jerome Myers for an insightful look at why we excuse our dreams away and choose to snipe from the sidelines, rather than wage a battle of our own. Jerome Myers is the preeminent authority of dream realization. A believer that dreams can, and should be real, Jerome left corporate America when he realized that his role offered financial gain, but little significance. He is the founder and head coach of Myers Methods and has been featured in Black Enterprise, Business Insider and numerous podcasts. He has developed a system for exiting corporate America and creating a life of impact. Today, he and his company help other apex performers find their calling and live every day on purpose by harnessing the power of his model for a Centered Life, what he calls “the Red Pill”. Jerome and his firms can guide any individual from a monotonous uninspiring existence to a life of fulfilment and impact. Please share your stories with me over at dreamwithdan.com. One of the most remarkable pilots of World War II never fired a shot or dropped a bomb. With his pioneering aerial reconnaissance, Sidney Cotton made a vital contribution to Allied planning. Last year, some time after Thanksgiving I had to change format and use excerpts from a few interviews to get to everybody I've talked to about Christmas music before the holiday comes. This year, I have to start now since I already have enough interviews to get to February if I ran one per show.  This week, I'm talking to some of my favorite people. The Fleshtones are the long-time garage rock gold standard, and singer Peter Zaremba is always a great person to talk to about that corner of the rock 'n' roll world. Since it seems like a shrinking one, we talk about that and how their most recent single, the Spanish-language "Mi Engañaste Bien," plays into that. We talk about the bond between record collectors and, of course, their 2008 Christmas album, Stocking Stuffer. This week also features Susan Cowsill, the youngest member of the '60s family pop band The Cowsills. Susan has never stopped singing or making music, and has been part of New Orleans' music community since she moved here in the 1990s with The Continental Drifters. Cowsills memories are inevitable for her, particularly now that she and two of her brothers have a podcast of their own, The Cowsills Podcast. We talk about that, Branson, some of her favorite Christmas songs, Karen Carpenter, and the experience of recording a Christmas song for Debbie Davis and Matt Perrine's Oh Crap! It's Christmas Vol. 2. Recently, the Numero Group reissue label released the very entertaining Christmas Dreamers: Yuletide Christmas (1960-1972), and this week I talk to Adam Luksetich about the process of pulling the collection together, and how his own relationship to Christmas music affected his choices. Finally, singer Alexandra Scott returns to discuss Mariah Carey's re-entry into the Christmas music arena with her new song, "Fall in Love at Christmas," featuring Khalid and Kirk Franklin. This episode of Twelve Songs is sponsored by Car-Floats.com, which makes reusable fabric stickers for your car.  We're still giving away our 2021 listeners-only Christmas mix. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Dreamers Crime has been on a crazy ride since they formed. By blending metal and rock sounds they create their own version of hard rock with explosive, anthem tracks. Dreamers Crime is a four piece outfit ready to leave their own mark on the music stage. Co-founders Peter Repousis (lead vocalist) and Simon Kapsis (guitarist), together with Adam Plimmer (bassist) and Felipe Martelo (drummer), are set to expose their heavy rock and metal sound consisting of crunching riffs, ambient leads and vocal hooks to the rest of the world. The band wrote and released their first EP What is Real in 2014, which was followed by tours within Australia and time spent writing new material over the next years to come. Since 2018, resting has not been an option for Dreamers Crime as they completed two South East Asian tours including countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. They have also completed shows around Australia and shared the stage with American rock band Trapt and Portugal's very own Hybrid Theory. The band spent most of the last few years in the studio writing, recording and completing their upcoming album Here We Are. Produced and recorded by Australian award winners Dave Petrovic and Stevie Knight from Electric Sun Studios, the band released the singles “Silence”, “Dreaming” and "Here We Are", ultimately leading to the album's release in October 2021. Today, we continue the conversation with Managing Director of the most-visited, privately-owned attraction in Australia: Scenic World.  Anthea Hammon is 3rd generation Hammon family to take control of the World-Heritage-Listed Blue Mountains attraction, which has seen her navigate some tumultuous terrain these past 2yrs with devastating bush fires for months – only to be followed up with a pandemic that has crippled the entire “attractions” industry. With a strong focus on family succession planning, she was well supported to navigate unfamiliar terrain. She has been determined to maintain the culture and iconic scenic attraction that began in 1945 when her grandfather Harry Hammon converted the abandoned Coal Mine into the Scenic Railway. With an engineering background, she has taken her fascination for how machinery works and sculpted a working environment that includes her 2 & 6 yr old in tow - the family culture is truly felt the moment you are on site.In spectacular fashion, Nat & I met Anthea in her natural habitat…her youngest child Hamilton in a pram being cuddled by one staff member to another, Anthea, overseeing the room that she'd organized for her community to be inspired by a heroes journey (my Nat!!) and of course her daughter Hazel running back and forth reminding us all who was really in charge!  The values in her business place and living and breathing!I am looking forward to speaking to a leader that has forged a new model – not so much deliberately but moreso organically – constantly bringing family values into the forefront and demonstrating how powerful it really can be to operate from this platform! The Goods on Anthea:Graduating from university with an engineering degree it seemed that Anthea's career would be one of finding solutions to problems or maximising opportunities. As the 3rd generation member of the Hammon family to take control of Scenic World , the last two years have tested all of her problem solving skills and then some.Anthea is the Managing Director of what is the most visited, privately owned attraction in Australia, attracting over one million visitors annually. Set within the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, the company is a third generation family business. Established in 1945 (for the past 76yrs) when Harry Hammon converted the abandoned Katoomba Colliery into the Scenic Railway, it continues to be owned and operated by the same family.Anthea shares the challenges that have been presented to her on a business level since the outbreak of Covid, the joy that she gets from creating meaningful shared experiences for families and amongst all of the work in finding a way to keep a tourist business going through months of lockdown.. her family home burnt to the ground…I trust you will enjoy this conversation with a remarkably resilient woman. Contact Anthea:         LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/anthea-hammon         Website: https://scenicworld.com.au/explore         Go to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

“One of the things that is dying is our planet. We hear these sirens every single day. We're being warned daily by experts and concerned people how vast that squandering is going. It's a case of urgency and it's astounding and a very sad, a very pathetic comment on modern life that most people are ignoring those signs. As a poet, it seems to me that one of the tasks that the poet takes on, it's a vocation that's born with it, it's this consciousness, this serving as witness.”Xicana activist, editor, poet, novelist, and artist Ana Castillo, was born and raised in Chicago. She is known for coining the term “xicanisma” which is defined in her book the Massacre of the Dreamers as, “a sociopolitical movement in the United States that analyzes the historical, cultural, spiritual, educational, and economic intersection of Mexican American women that identify as Chicana.” The term cross bred Chicana feminism, which came to include the indigenous ancestry of Mexican Americans, unifying us with our sisters on the other side of the border.· www.anacastillo.net · www.creativeprocess.info · www.oneplanetpodcast.org

Immigration Law for Tech Startups

In this week's Immigration Law for Tech Startups podcast, I'm joined by my law partner Anita Koumriqian as we discuss DACA and DREAMers, what is going on, and why this matters, not just for the recipients and their families, but also within the tech community.    The point of DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is to allow peace of mind, comfort, and most importantly, the ability to go to school for undocumented children brought to the United States by their parents from another country. And so, it gives undocumented people the ability to work, if they qualify.   Please share this episode with companies, HR and recruiting professionals, startup founders, international talent, or anyone who can benefit from it. Communing in her dreams with animal spirit guides and contacting gods and goddesses is part of Kat's shamanic dreamwork practice. She begins by describing her childhood nightmares about snakes and how Snake eventually became a powerful spirit guide for her. Kat tells about how her "dark night of the soul" opened her up to reexamine her contract with God. She describes how surrendering can lead to new growth by sharing the Welsh myth of Ceridwen. Kat also reads a story that she created about snakes called, "We Once Were Dragons." We end with a question from Rick about how to identify gods and goddesses in our dreams. Kat suggests it has to do with the "twinkle in the eye" and that the god might show up even as a homeless person. BIO: Katrina Appleby is a Certified Professional Dreamworker and a Mentor for the Institute of Dream Studies. Since the age of four Kat has been aware of the importance and power of dreams and dreamt often about snakes. She finds that it is indeed quite normal to meet Gods, Goddesses and power animals in her dreams. Kat joins us today from the UK. She is passionate about working with people and their dreams, especially with those that feel that they have a bigger purpose and calling and are looking to their dreams to find out which direction to take. Dear Black Girl Creative, There is beauty in seeing things as they are; not how you want them to be. Today I sit with my dear friend and fellow Black Girl Creative, Alexis. She is learning to paint, stepping into her creative practice to heal ancestral trauma and create fertile grounds for her descendants. We talk about SO much in this episode: why aging is beautiful, how capitalism kills our creativity, honoring our ancestors in our work, storytelling through our art, healing the trauma, dreaming of a better tomorrow, how to work through perfectionism and imposter syndrome, why you should create for the sake of creating, Following your intuition, inspiration wrapped in matter, and SO much more! REPLAY: #86: What I Wish for Your Freelance Business in 2021

Deliberate Freelancer

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2021 38:54

I'm replaying this January 2021 episode to hopefully motivate you, inspire you and encourage you to do some of these things if you haven't already yet this year. The year is starting to wind down, incredibly enough, so let's embrace these concepts and set up our businesses for success now. This episode might also be a good reminder of how to think like a business owner and how now to take time to improve your business. This episode goes through seven areas that I would love for you to improve upon, if you haven't already. They are: 1. Embrace a business owner mindset This idea is what this podcast is based on. Think of yourself as a freelance business owner and all that that entails. Words matter, and the words you tell yourself and others can help to change your mindset. 2. Raise your rates The pandemic has been a hard year economically too, so raising rates for all clients might not be doable. But there are some clients who fared well, and it may be time to raise your rates. It's certainly time to raise your rates for potential clients — they don't know what your past rates were! Also, if you have a secret hourly rate — which helps you determine project rates and/or is the amount you aim to earn every hour you are working for clients — I encourage you to raise it by at least $25 an hour. And don't ask your client about raising your rates. Remember, you are a business owner and costs go up. So, you can send an email and say “I wanted to let you know that my rates are going up as of such and such a date. My new rate will be this.” 3. Don't put all your eggs in one basket It's important to have anchor clients, but when you commit too much time to an anchor client or become too comfortable with that gig and that income, it can hurt you if you lose that client. Ideally, I would consider not having one client that is more than 35% of your income. When I talk about don't put all your eggs in one basket, I also mean your services. This can mean your services and/or your industry. Do you need to expand your niche to have niches that are similar? Can you use your skills to add more services for clients? 4. Don't compare yourself to others Sometimes you do this without even thinking about it. You look at others in your field, even friends of yours who are freelancers, and see their amazing careers or their clients or the big achievements they've reached. I can fall prey to this just like anyone else. We have to stop comparing ourselves to others. You are a unique individual, and your business is unique. You have different strengths and weaknesses and values and responsibilities and desires. First, social media. What social media platforms are you on often and how do they make you feel? Are you happy when you scroll through Instagram and see what people are doing and read motivational quotes? Or does it make you feel lazy or like a failure or that you need to do more? Maybe it is time to get off Instagram! This goes for all social media platforms. Take a critical look at how your viewing and interaction with these platforms make you feel. Another suggestion: Start a gratitude practice. Perhaps you want to start a gratitude journal to write down one to three simple things that you are thankful for that day. I embrace the word “savor” and try to remember to savor all the little things throughout the day. Another way to express gratitude in your life is to acknowledge and thank other people. You can still do that as a freelancer. You can let your direct client know if a staff member is really helpful on something. Complimenting and acknowledging people is like volunteering; it makes you feel good to make other people feel good. One more way to stop comparing yourself to others is to be alert for the word “should.” Anytime you say you “should” be doing something, catch yourself or have your partner or a friend call you out on it. “Should” often comes with shame and guilt. It makes you feel bad and does little to improve any situation. So stop shoulding yourself. 5. Set boundaries Boundaries tell you and those around you what is acceptable, appropriate human behavior. They vary from person to person. Knowing what your boundaries are and setting them is critical to building healthy, respectful relationships in your life. So, please check out episode #45 of Deliberate Freelancer for tips on setting boundaries. 6. Get ahold of your finances For many of us, 2020 blew up our financial goals and plans. Now that the dust has settled a bit, if you haven't already, I highly encourage you in this first quarter of 2021 to get ahold of your finances. This could be a variety of things — it will be different for everyone, If you need help with your finances, I highly recommend episode #28 of Deliberate Freelancer, with my guest Pam Capalad. Pam is a certified financial planner and a whiz when it comes to this stuff. 7. Take a vacation or staycation Plan time off now! Some freelancers tend to be bad in general about taking time off. My argument is always: If I'm going to take only 2-3 weeks of vacation a year or less, when I'm my own boss, than why am I my own boss? I shouldn't treat myself worse than an employer would. Freelancing means freedom. If you don't schedule vacations, staycations and days off, they often won't happen. Even if you can't really go anywhere because of the pandemic, you can play a staycation or other days off. I want all of you to get into a regular habit of planning and taking vacations — and DO NOT check email or do or check in on client work. That's not a vacation. It can be done. Remember, you're your own boss. You tell your clients you're going to be away. Depending on how regular the work is you may have to work ahead to get stuff done or hire a subcontractor to fill in. Or, take advantage of slow work times. You can also create working vacations, like I do in Indiana for two weeks most summers. The freedom to work anywhere gives you the flexibility to go places and keep in touch without having to completely log off work.
