In our Motherhood taboo series we are seeking to “fill the gap” between feminist, thoughtful, deconstructing/inclusive orthodoxy Christian content and the trad wife motherhood content online.  Content warning: we will be talking about miscarriage and pregnancy loss in this episode.  This week we are joined by two friends and colleagues, The Rev. Allison Caudill and The Rev'd Allie McDougall who have both navigated miscarriage in their ministry.  Miscarriage is something many families experience and yet, it is considered a major taboo in our society. Our guests will share with us their experiences of publicly navigating loss and how their faith helped them through it. This was one of the most moving discussions we have had to date on the podcast and we pray it will be a blessing for our listeners.More on our guests:The Rev'd Allie McDougall, Vicar of St. Paul's and St. Stephen's, Stratford, Ontario, CanadaSubstack: Gathering Up the Crumbs https://substack.com/home/post/p-155663524 The Rev. What does choosing joy really mean when you’re living through pain, pressure, or exhaustion? In this deeply personal solo episode, Choosing Joy host Deborah Joy Winans Williams sits down—not as an actress or celebrity, but as herself—to answer your questions, share her heart, and reflect on what joy looks like when it’s uncomfortable, spiritual, and hard-won. Deborah opens up about motherhood, mental health, faith, grief, self-worth, and how she learned (and is still learning) to choose joy daily—not just on stage, but in real life. From the lessons of her Winans family legacy to her girls' trip epiphany with Merle Dandridge to the quiet prayers that sustain her, this episode is a soulful, grounding invitation to go deeper. Whether you’re a woman of faith, an artist in progress, a mother in motion, or just someone trying to pour from a not-so-full cup—Deborah’s raw honesty and wisdom remind us that joy isn’t a mood... it’s a decision. I was in Chicago last week-end speaking at the Midwest Motherhood Conference - it was amazing! We laughed and cried and connected with so many friends and made new friends – the atmosphere was electric and I was so honored to speak to all these women. At this conference we had young women – some pregnant with their first, some pregnant with their 3rd or more.We had moms of elementary aged children and middle school kids.We had moms of high schoolers, college-age kids, and moms of children who have left the home. And one thing we all had in common was that everyone in that room gave up a Saturday morning for I think three reasons.  Listen to this episode to hear my thoughts on what moms are looking for.Looking for a Catholic life coach to help you navigate marriage and motherhood? And in learning how to nurture my interior life, I learned how to find peace – peace when life and relationships were good and peace when chaos was the order of the day.  In the Gospel of Matthew we read, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” I wasn't going to God – I was carrying all the labor and burden of my life on my own. But once I started developing my interior life, I found peace - and I stopped yelling at the kids and being critical of my husband and those around me.Looking for a Catholic life coach to help you navigate marriage and motherhood? We need to teach our children to have clear values of what's really important in life and satisfying their desires all the time is not it.  We need to help our children see that we're not here in this world to think constantly about what will make us happy and satisfy all our whims.Let's teach our kids that things of the world are here to enhance our life, not to make us self-centered, selfish, and always wanting more.If we want our children to practice moderation as adults, it's our job to teach them how to live it as children during boring days and celebratory seasons. Looking for a Catholic life coach to help you navigate marriage and motherhood? The mind finds what it seeks.  When we're focused on all the contradictions or negative parts of our life it is impossible to feel joy. But when we're focused on all that we're thankful for, our heart softens, and we can find the joy. Living in gratitude is a habit to embrace. It's not just one day on Thanksgiving or when special happy events happen in your life.Looking for a Catholic life coach to help you navigate marriage and motherhood?
