Do you ever walk into a room and forget why you're there—because your brain is juggling 35 invisible tabs at once?In Episode 302 of Her Home and Heart, we're unpacking the mental and emotional load that so many Christian homeschool moms silently carry. From constant planning to managing emotions, homeschool, meals, and life—it's no wonder we feel exhausted. I'll walk you through how to recognize the signs of cognitive overload, how to dump and delegate what's weighing you down, and how to create flexible rhythms that work with your season—not against it.
This episode features a brief life update as well as an article I wrote at Easter-time, but true for all times. Life is a cycle of deaths, seeds buried. But we believe in resurrection through Jesus Christ. My garden is a metaphor for that.
Mother's Day 2025 - Pastor Mark SmithMay 11, 2025
In this episode, Pastor Karl kicks off a new 10-week sermon series diving into the letters of 1st and 2nd Timothy. Speaking on Mother's Day, he highlights the powerful influence of faithful mothers and grandmothers, drawing from Timothy's own story, shaped by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. Pastor Karl emphasizes the core theme of these letters: what a Jesus community believes—its doctrine—directly shapes how it lives. Exploring 1st Timothy Chapter 1, he unpacks Paul's charge to Timothy, a young leader in Ephesus, to remain steadfast in a challenging environment, teaching sound doctrine and resisting cultural confusion. Pastor Karl outlines six reasons to "remain" in faith: hard places need hard truth, God's people are needed, God uses unworthy people, we serve a great God, the battle for faith is too important to surrender, and some have already fallen away. With passion, he calls the church to stand under Scripture, guard doctrine, and trust in God's grace to live faithfully. I was in Chicago last week-end speaking at the Midwest Motherhood Conference - it was amazing! We laughed and cried and connected with so many friends and made new friends – the atmosphere was electric and I was so honored to speak to all these women. At this conference we had young women – some pregnant with their first, some pregnant with their 3rd or more.We had moms of elementary aged children and middle school kids.We had moms of high schoolers, college-age kids, and moms of children who have left the home. And one thing we all had in common was that everyone in that room gave up a Saturday morning for I think three reasons. And in learning how to nurture my interior life, I learned how to find peace – peace when life and relationships were good and peace when chaos was the order of the day. In the Gospel of Matthew we read, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” I wasn't going to God – I was carrying all the labor and burden of my life on my own. But once I started developing my interior life, I found peace - and I stopped yelling at the kids and being critical of my husband and those around me.Looking for a Catholic life coach to help you navigate marriage and motherhood? We need to teach our children to have clear values of what's really important in life and satisfying their desires all the time is not it. We need to help our children see that we're not here in this world to think constantly about what will make us happy and satisfy all our whims.Let's teach our kids that things of the world are here to enhance our life, not to make us self-centered, selfish, and always wanting more.If we want our children to practice moderation as adults, it's our job to teach them how to live it as children during boring days and celebratory seasons. The mind finds what it seeks. When we're focused on all the contradictions or negative parts of our life it is impossible to feel joy. But when we're focused on all that we're thankful for, our heart softens, and we can find the joy. Living in gratitude is a habit to embrace. First published August 2024 on the Australian Presbyterian website. For the full text, see the AP site or the Light Duties website. This article explores the disparity between the sentiments of the 2024-25 Women's Budget Statement and the Bible's vision of how children are raised. Instead of focusing on women's rights, I suggest we refocus by considering how our children are going with the biblical imperative that they obey their parents. Is it possible that the expectation that children can learn to obey has disappeared along with the means by which the Bible assumes it is learned?

Many new parenting styles create an imbalance in the child/parent relationship. When we adopt a parenting style that is child-led and emotion driven, we do a disservice to our children by hyper focusing on how they feel and what they want rather than teaching them how to think and how to feel and express their feelings in an appropriate way while learning the good habits or virtues that are the foundation of thinking, feeling, and acting. In Virtue Based Parenting, we 1. Recognize that we are the leaders of our children and that we are their first and most important teachers.2. We seek self-growth in virtue in order to better model those virtues for our children and as a point of connection with each child.3. We are proactive in establishing our parenting and home life goals and we communicate our expectations clearly and consistently. We react calmly and thoughtfully to our children's misbehavior seeking ultimately to fulfill our long-term goals rather than simply implementing short-term solutions.4. We focus on formation through lived virtues, understanding that virtue, or good habits, is the foundation of excellent moral, spiritual, and practical goals.
