“Spare the rod, spoil the child." (Proverbs 13:24) That proverb was written by King Solomon centuries ago. Is the idea of spanking as old as the phrase? Is there a place for spanking in the families of today? On this week's show, Chad and Kurt continue the study of the book Shepherding a Child's Heart (by Tedd Tripp). They talk with Family Pastor Bryan Elliott and Family Counselor Chad Stettler (Olive Branch Family Counseling https://m.facebook.com/Olivebranchfamilycounseling/ ) about what good discipline looks like, as well as what it shouldn't look like. The ultimate goal is getting to the heart of the child, not just managing their behavior. Kurt shares the story of how he explained gospel of Christ in a powerful way to one of his children during a spanking. It's one of the most moving segments on the show (4th segment, it's worth checking out at least to hear the story.) (This is a repeat episode - enjoy!)
This episode of the Shepherd Press Podcast features the second part of an insightful conversation between host Anthony Russo and renowned author Tedd Tripp. The episode focuses on the practical application of gospel-centered parenting principles, as discussed in Tripp's book, 'Shepherding a Child's Heart.' Tedd shares the importance of 'preventative maintenance' — equipping children with godly principles before issues arise. He encourages parents to act as tangible representatives of God in their children's lives, helping them understand the importance of humility and turning to God for support. They also discuss key, biblical principles to navigate parenting effectively, in a tech-saturated world. The episode concludes with Tripp's final thoughts on the importance of parents living with humility, integrity, and reliance on God, thereby modeling a gospel-centered life for their children. 00:46 Applying Biblical Principles in Parenting 01:41 Preventative Maintenance: Shepherding Your Children Before Issues Arise03:29 Anticipating and Addressing Behavioral Issues08:22 The Role of Parents as God's Representatives 10:58 Relevance of Biblical Principles Today 15:06 Cultural Contexts and Biblical Authority 18:19 Technology and Preventative Maintenance 21:01 Final Thoughts and Encouragement for ParentsGrab a copy of 'Shepherding a Child's Heart' here: https://www.shepherdpress.com/products/shepherding-a-childs-heart/Follow Shepherd Press on social media for more insights:Facebook: @shepherdpressInstagram: @shepherdpressinc
In this episode of the Shepherd Press Podcast, host Anthony Russo interviews Tedd Tripp, author of 'Shepherding a Child's Heart.' The conversation includes key insights into the process and motivation behind writing this parenting classic. Tripp talks about some of the current challenges Christian parents face and emphasizes that the key to reversing societal trends lies in adopting a biblical approach to parenting—nurturing a child's heart rather than merely aiming for behavioral change. Tedd shares how the gospel offers the necessary grace and power to transform both parents and children, fostering their relationship and enabling obedience rooted in love, not fear. This heartfelt and gospel-centered conversation offers rich guidance for parents seeking to raise their children according to biblical principles.00:48 Introducing Tedd Tripp01:55 The Crisis in Evangelical Parenting03:44 Understanding the Heart in Child Rearing 05:19 The Journey to Writing 'Shepherding a Child's Heart'12:34 The Core Principles of Biblical Parenting 19:55 Authority and Grace in Parenting 23:30 Conclusion and ResourcesGrab a copy of 'Shepherding a Child's Heart' here: https://www.shepherdpress.com/products/shepherding-a-childs-heart/Follow Shepherd Press on social media for more insights:Facebook: @shepherdpressInstagram: @shepherdpressinc
Most children training books are bad—but a few are fantastic. In this podcast, Scott Brown and Jason Dohm discuss their top three: (1) Training Tips by Reb Bradley; (2) Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp; and (3) Purposeful and Persistent Parenting by John and Cindy Raquet. How can parents proactively raise their kids, rather than have a “child-run” home where they simply react to bad behavior? How can children be trained to obey when spoken to the first time? How can they be shepherded to love God and others from the heart? Learn the answers to these and many other parenting questions from these three practical resources.
All this week we're looking at what it means for us as Christian parents to entrust our children to God. One of the most important things to remember is that to entrust your children to God is to tend to yourself. I love Tedd Tripp's definition of parenting as “shepherding the hearts of your children in the ways of God's wisdom.” It follows that the only way we can effectively nurture our children in the ways of God's wisdom is to be constantly nurturing ourselves. The Apostle Paul's words to the Colossians tell us that “therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving”. We can only lead our children to where we are. If you want your children to walk the road of discipleship and to love Jesus Christ with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, we have to do the same ourselves. Take stock of your life, and ask God to show you where change is needed.
Part 1Children interpret their experience from a worldview that seeks to answer their fundamental questions: Who am I? What do I exist for? Where can I find joy? We need to provide our children with a consistent, persuasive, biblical framework for understanding the world God has made and their place in it. Instructing a Child's Heart is essential to Shepherding a Child's Heart. The instruction that you provide for them not only informs their mind; it is directed to persuade their hearts of the wisdom and truthfulness of God's ways. Impress truth on the hearts of your children, not to control or manage them, but to point them to the greatest joy and happiness that they can experience - delighting in God and the goodness of his ways.Teaching by: Dr Tedd TrippIf you would like to join the next Biblical Counseling Conversations session at the end of this month, please email info@smti.co.zaFor more information on SMTI please click here: https://smti.co.za/For more information on ACBC Africa please click here: https://acbcafrica.co.za/For more information on Lynnwood Baptist Church please click here: https://lynnwoodbaptistchurch.co.za/

This episode originally aired in July 2022 as part of Cultivate Season 1. We're looking forward to sharing this eye-opening, important conversation with you again this summer, to encourage strong, Godly influence and relationships with your older children. We invite author, pastor, and speaker Dr. Tedd Tripp to talk with our host Ty Fischer about how Christian parents can relate with their older children and teens. Ted's well-known book, Shepherding a Child's Heart, is often remembered for its call on parents to establish Godly, firm but loving authority with their young children, but the second part of the book covers how that relationship changes as our children mature. Ted encourages parents with older children on how to relate with their teenage kids in a way that invites influence over their lives, rather than heavy handed authority, and offers hope for those who worry they've blown it already (hint: it's not too late).
Today we get together with Tedd Tripp (Shepherding a Child's Heart) and talk about soul care in the life of the church and family. Biblical counseling is such an important issue to get right these days because there are a host of very secular "soul care" ideologies that masquerade as good and useful.

At least, what we tentatively plan on it looking like. If we learned anything last year, it's not to get too lofty with our goals because who knows what the Lord has in store! We're being cautiously optimistic as we look ahead to the new year, but we're also reviewing a few of our favorites from the past. I always love getting recommendations from guests on things like books to read and brands to try, and so today's conversation is no different. You can find links to everything that Justin and I recommend below. Of course, you know that if you follow along with me on social media you'll be getting my recommendations year ‘round. This is the second part of a four part study taught by Associate Pastor Jim Richland. This series focuses on the importance of parents training the heart, not just the behavior, of their children. Based on the bestselling book Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp, Pastor Jim discusses practical ways in which parents can partner with God on this important task. In this lesson, we will be focusing on how God has equipped parents to train their children. Many parents feel lost, overwhelmed and ill-equipped to guide their children. However, God has already given us everything we need to do what He has called us to.

You finally “get it” and the way you think has changed? Maybe it's a radical “paradigm shift” or just a “aha moment.” Something is different. I had one of moments this fall when I began reading Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp. This is a book on parenting, but he starts with the
