This episode is the first in our #APSA50 series, where we teamed up with the Behind the Knife Podcast to cover the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the American Pediatric Surgical Association. It is a conversation between Alex Casar, Alex Gibbons, Rae Hanke, and our invited guest. It presents an interactive discussion and thoughtful reflection on the topic of Social Determinants of Health, which was a cornerstone of this year’s meeting. Social determinants of health refer to factors like economic stability, housing, transportation, physical and psychological safety, zip code and geography, literacy and education, hunger, poverty, community support and engagement, discrimination, stress, and linguistic and cultural competencies from providers that affect healthcare outcomes like quality of care, mortality, morbidity, life expectancy, and even healthcare costs. We had the opportunity to interview Adam Foss – a lawyer, former District Attorney, and founder of Prosecutor Impact, a nonprofit organization improving community safety in the United States through culture change in the criminal justice system. We hope you feel as simultaneously uncomfortable and enlightened by his message as the audience did in person. Our role as pediatric surgeons extends way further than the walls of our operating rooms. It is our responsibility as medical providers and community leaders to identify areas of opportunity within our reach and tackle them to improve healthcare outcomes. Join the conversation and share with us the steps you are taking to alleviate these disparities. Remember that your actions and commitment are contagious. Stay tuned for more updates from APSA 2019. April 29, 2019 at the Boston Athenæum. Join us for a conversation with two leading voices in the movement to bring about criminal justice reform, New York Times Magazine journalist Emily Bazelon and Boston-based advocate and former prosecutor Adam Foss. In their respective fields, both grapple with the fact that the image of the American criminal justice system as a contest between the prosecution and the defense with judges ensuring a fair fight does not, in fact, match the reality. Much of the time, it is prosecutors more than judges who control the outcome of a case, and oftentimes with devastating consequences. Emily Bazelon’s new book entitled Charged examines this heretofore unchecked power of prosecutors and how this power undermines the American criminal justice system. She exposes the damage overzealous prosecutors can inflict alongside those—like Adam Foss—who seek to reform the system. Adam Foss, who formerly served as Assistant District Attorney in the Juvenile Division of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, has firsthand insight into the connection between prosecution and mass incarceration. Since his viral Ted Talk on prosecution in February in 2016, Adam Foss has gone on to found Prosecutor Impact, a non-profit developing training and curriculum for prosecutors to reframe their role in the criminal justice system. With participants uniquely suited to speaking on the present issues afflicting the justice system, this event will shine a light on the little known cause for enormous injustice, while also offering a vision for a better future.
Learn how mass incarceration can be positively impacted when you “re-route” a win and change the mind-set of criminal prosecutors. Consider how the most powerful form of influence may be to change the way success is measured. Bio: Adam J. Foss, Executive Director of Prosecutor Impact, is a former Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office (SCDAO) in Boston, MA. Adam is a fierce advocate for criminal justice reform and the importance of the role of the prosecutor in ending Mass Incarceration. Mr. Foss believes that the profession of prosecution is ripe for reinvention requiring better incentives and more measurable metrics for success beyond, simply, “cases won.” Watch Adam discuss a reformed justice system in his Ted Talk. https://www.ted.com/talks/adam_foss_a_prosecutor_s_vision_for_a_better_justice_system?language=en
Adam Foss founded Prosecutor Impact in 2016 with the mission to improve community safety in the United States through a better understanding of the most important actor in the criminal justice system: the criminal prosecutor. They pursue education, training, and improved access to technology for the American prosecutor, which they believe will improve public safety results in our communities.Adam has long been a critical voice in the national conversation about criminal justice reform. His 2016 TED Talk, A Prosecutor's Vision for a Better Criminal Justice System, has been viewed nearly 2 million times and is a clarion call for the involvement of prosecutors in the work of reversing mass incarceration. Watch it and listen to our interview to find out what Adam and PI are doing to make that a reality.
Equal access to justice and equal protection under the law are critical elements of our liberal democracy. Yet, in practice, in the US young men of color are more likely than their white counterparts to be picked up for, locked up for, and prosecuted for suspected criminal offenses. If they cannot gain pre-trial release, these young men remain in jail while awaiting prosecution. The jury is more likely to find these men guilty, and the prosecutor is more likely to ask for a stiff sentence, which the judge is more likely to impose. Once incarcerated, these young men may not be protected from mental and physical harm. Once released, they can be denied housing, jobs, credit and even the ability to vote. Their families will have been impoverished by the costs associated with trials, imprisonment and lost earning capacity. This pattern of bias – whether unconscious or not – has served to delegitimize our system of justice in the eyes of a growing number of Americans. Can philanthropy and civil society advance the reforms needed for our justice system to regain the trust of all Americans? Can we realize the vital goal of equal justice for all? Introduction: Adam Foss, President, Prosecutor Impact Panel Discussion * Carroll Bogert, President, The Marshall Project * Adam Foss, President, Prosecutor Impact (moderator) * Glenn E. Martin, Founder and President, JustLeadershipUSA For more information about this event please visit: https://www.philanthropyforum.org/conference/gpf-2017/
Former prosecutor, Adam Foss is a fierce voice for compassion in criminal justice reform. He’s currently the founder of Prosecutor Impact, a non-profit organization built around the mission of improving community safety in the US by requiring better incentives and more measurable metrics for success beyond, simply, “cases won.”. Not only did he advise President Barack Obama on criminal justice reform, but he was also named the 2017 Nelson Mandela Changemaker of the Year. There is no other way to describe Adam Foss but as a 21st century ‘Giant of Justice’. Recorded together at Life is Good HQ in Boston, Branden and Adam discuss the difference between sympathy and empathy and gain a better understanding of the most important actor in the criminal justice system: the prosecutor.
