Episode Summary:In this episode of the Fempower Health Podcast, we unpack one of the most important shifts happening in gynecology that few patients know about: salpingectomy—the removal of the fallopian tubes—is replacing tubal ligation in many cases as a way to reduce ovarian cancer risk.Research has shown that most ovarian cancers actually begin in the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries. But outdated coding, confusing consent processes, and insurance issues have made this simple, evidence-based cancer prevention tool harder for women to access—or even understand. This 10-minute episode breaks it all down in plain English.

Dr. Holly Thacker dives deep into the phenomenon known as "tanorexia" – the addiction to tanning that has serious health implications many don't recognize until it's too late. This addiction isn't merely psychological. When your skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, your body releases endorphins – those feel-good neurochemicals that create a genuine physical dependency. "People can actually get addicted to this," Dr. Thacker explains, drawing parallels between tanorexia and other recognized addictive behaviors.Whether you're concerned about your own tanning habits or protecting children's delicate skin, this episode delivers practical, science-backed advice for maintaining healthy skin while still enjoying outdoor activities. Episode OverviewIn this episode, I take a closer look at compounded medications—what they are, when they're used, and the important nuances behind their growing popularity. From hormone therapy and menopause care to semaglutide and GLP-1s, compounded meds are often described as personalized solutions. But these treatments exist in a regulatory gray area, with real variability in quality, safety, and effectiveness. This episode is about cutting through confusion—without judgment or hype—and offering context to help you better understand your options. What You'll LearnWhat compounded medications are and when they're usedWhy some women rely on them for hormone therapy, PCOS, progesterone intolerance, or GLP-1 accessWhat's different between FDA-approved medications and compounded versionsWhy terms like “bioidentical” can be misleadingThe impact of drug shortages, insurance limitations, and gaps in careWhy It MattersMany people don't realize that compounded medications aren't FDA-approved—and that doesn't automatically make them dangerous or ineffective. But it does mean they operate by different rules. This episode offers a grounded look at what's happening behind the scenes and why these treatments are increasingly common in women's health and beyond.ResourcesRead article on Fear, misinformation, and pharmaceutical messianism in the promotion of compounded bioidentical hormone therapyCheck out the blog post version of this episode here, which includes all citations.**Top 50 Health Podcast of 2024** Want men to better understand how to you during your menopause journey! What does it really mean to “have it all”? In this tender, fierce & deeply insightful episode, Breazie sits down with writer, parent & intersectional feminist Micah Larsen to unpack the pressures modern moms face, how the myth of “having it all” burns us out, & what it takes to raise the next generation with values of equity, bodily autonomy, emotional literacy, & gender awareness.Micah opens up about her mental health journey, building a village through vulnerability, how she's disrupting gender roles in her household, & why honest, age-appropriate conversations about consent, abortion, privilege & emotions matter—especially when raising white sons in a patriarchal society. This episode is equal parts truth-telling & gentle rebellion—an invitation to all caregivers & cycle-breakers to redefine what “having it all” means on their own terms.

How often do you experience two competing desires at once? Maybe you want to eat the cake, but you also want to reach your physique goals. Do you make either one of those desires wrong for existing? This internal tug-of-war between immediate pleasure and long-term progress is something I see consistently in my coaching practice. Having competing desires around food and body goals doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you – it makes you human. In this episode, I break down how to hold space for competing desires without shame or self-judgment. I share practical mindset tools for making intentional food choices, including how to slow down, create awareness, and choose from a place of empowerment rather than restriction. We'll also explore why resentment develops and how to shift from feeling deprived to feeling in control of your decisions. Some lessons come late - but it's never too late to claim them. Today, Micah Larsen and I talk about the wisdom every woman deserves to have, no matter how your story began. In this powerful episode, Micah returns to talk about the important life lessons that many of us never received - lessons about bodily consent, emotional intelligence, breaking free from toxic gender roles, deconstructing patriarchy, and advocating for your health and your truth. We dig into medical gaslighting, the history of silencing women's health experiences, why anger is a powerful (and healing) emotion, and what it really means to "have it all" in a society that pressures women to do everything without support. If you've ever felt unseen, unheard, or unprepared by what you weren't taught, this conversation is for you.

Content warning: This episode includes discussion of suicide, which may be sensitive for some listeners. If you are experiencing difficult emotions, please know that help is available. Mental health is just as critical as physical health, yet we rarely give it the same attention. In my conversation with Dr. Michelle Chestovich this week, we dive into the reality that many of us are falling apart inside while appearing perfectly functional on the outside. This paradox affects countless high-achieving women who feel pressured to hold everything together, even as they're drowning. In this raw and honest conversation, we explore why asking for help feels so difficult, especially for high-achieving women. We break down what real self-care actually means (hint: it's not just bubble baths), how to honor your needs without guilt, and practical steps to take when you're not okay.
