We're living in a day when it feels like the very air is thick with — fear, division, and pressure coming at us from every direction. And the battle isn't only out there; it rages inside us too, with voices of doubt, anger, and discouragement. Just like the Roman soldier couldn't survive without his shield, none of us can face today unprotected. What scripture calls the shield of faith is God giving us covering, courage, and strength. And when we lift it together, faith doesn't just guard our lives — it becomes a fortress darkness can't conquer.

This week Elizabeth is joined by Mark Horowitz. We discuss two very different articles about viewpoint diversity. In one (unpublished) paper the authors examined thousands of college course syllabi for evidence that diverse perspectives were being introduced. In all 3 areas of focus (racism in the criminal justice system, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the ethics of abortion), faculty overwhelmingly assigned works representing a single perspective. There was very little evidence that students were formally introduced to books or articles identified as well known with respected alternative views. Based on our personal experiences in academia, we were more surprised about the magnitude of the effects than the general findings. While we could find little to criticize about the first article, we were less enamored with the second, which argues against viewpoint diversity. The author's focus is more political than scientific, and her examples are primarily extreme, unrelated to traditional academic goals, and may reveal more about her bias against Heterodox Academy than the futility of viewpoint diversity. She rightly argues that hiring individuals solely because they have unusual views would likely do little to advance science, but we find little else to admire about her narrow arguments and examples.  Mark shares his own research findings regarding groupthink in academia, the benefits of viewpoint diversity, and briefly describes the rewards and challenges of incorporating controversial topics and perspectives in the classroom.  Podcast notesThe (unpublished) Shields, et al. syllabus working paper can be found here: https://roseinstitute.cmc.edu/academic/faculty/profile/jon-shields The authors were interviewed by the Chronicle of Higher Education here: https://www.chronicle.com/article/these-scholarly-topics-are-hotly-debated-so-why-dont-syllabi-reflect-that and the paper was referenced in this New York Times editorial here:  https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/15/opinion/conservative-professors-viewpoint-diversity.htmlThe Siraganian op-ed for the American Association of University Professors Academe Magazine, which argues against viewpoint diversity, can be found here: Seven Theses Against Viewpoint Diversity | AAUPOther episodes with contributor Mark Horowitz: Top of the Class: Teachers with Lenient Grading get Higher Ratings: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s5-e6-top-of-the-class-attractive-teachers/id1537516628?i=1000699222059Contrarians at the Gate: Publishing Controversial Topics in an Era of Academic Progressivism: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s4-e26-contrarians-at-the-gate-publishing/id1537516628?i=1000668944697Making Up the Grade: A Call for Educators to Openly Address Eroding Standards: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s4-e19-making-up-the-grade-a-call-for-educators/id1537516628?i=1000661206148

It's a Song of the Week! I am so excited to present to you this brand new music-centered feature on the show. Last year we had a blast (my word) listening to 300 albums and discussing them together. Ever since I have known that we were going to get back to holding space to talk specifically about music on the pod, regularly. And just about a year after we started that massive undertaking, the time is now!! So instead of album after album, we're going to talk about ONE SONG AT A TIME. - This week's SIXTEENTH installment song is by Artist: Grizzly Bear And is called “Speak In Rounds.” It's from their fourth studio album Shields. Listen to the entire album (as you were invited to do!) here: https://youtube.com/playlist?l... If you must, listen to the song only on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Qz36ZbF79SI?s... You can also grab a preview on my IG @whereschloe; it's up on the profile. - There is no hierarchy; these songs are going to be in basically a random order, chosen for reasons that I'll most likely expound upon within the episode. Along with an array of background, inspirations, time frame, album order, cultural context, related themes, personal experiences, etc. Any genre artist decade that I would listen to is up for grabs and who's to know what will be next and why? ;) Remember your favorites. Discover something new. One song of the week at a time for however long works. I'm ELATED that you're along for the ride, C

professorjrod@gmail.comHave you ever wondered what invisible force protects your private messages, banking details, and personal information as they travel across the internet? The answer lies in cryptology—the fascinating science of securing information through mathematical techniques.Cryptology forms the backbone of modern cybersecurity, addressing the critical needs for confidentiality and integrity in our digital communications. Throughout this episode, Professor J-Rod breaks down complex cryptographic concepts into digestible, practical explanations that reveal how our online world maintains security. We journey through the three fundamental pillars of cryptographic security. First, symmetric encryption—the fastest method using a single shared key—powers everything from full disk encryption on your laptop to secure messaging. Next, we explore asymmetric encryption (public-key cryptography), which brilliantly solves the key distribution problem through mathematically-linked key pairs. Finally, we demystify hashing—the one-way process that creates digital fingerprints to verify data integrity without revealing the original content. Each concept comes alive through real-world examples: how your laptop protects files even if stolen, how websites establish secure connections with your browser, and why changing just one letter in a document completely transforms its hash value. The episode offers both theoretical understanding and practical knowledge about the technologies we unconsciously trust every day.Whether you're a cybersecurity novice or simply curious about how digital security works, this episode provides valuable insights into the cryptographic foundations that keep our digital lives private and secure. On this episode of The Option Block, Mark Longo is joined by Uncle Mike Tosaw from St. Charles Wealth Management and Henry "The Flowmaster" Schwartz from Cboe. They discuss the unexpected and muted reaction to Nvidia's earnings, the current state of the market, and the ideal trading conditions for investors. The panel also breaks down unusual options activity in a few unique single names and dives into a lively Mail Block discussion about the VIX and crypto derivatives. Time Stamps (04:54) - The Trading Block The panel discusses the surprising lack of volatility following Nvidia's earnings, despite high expectations and a large straddle pricing. The S&P 500 is up over 10% year-to-date, but the market feels subdued with low volatility and a steady, upward "trudge". Uncle Mike notes this is his "ideal market": boring and making new all-time highs. Technology and energy are the only sectors showing significant movement, with many others "taking the day off." The VIX is "hunching" at 14.25, with respectable options volume. SPY and SPX also have decent, though not record-breaking, paper on the tape. The hosts review the most active single names, including Snowflake's (SNOW) earnings pop, Retti (RETI), and Palantir (PLTR), which continues its pattern of aggressive early-session sell-offs followed by a late-session rebound. A quick recap of earnings moves in names like Best Buy, Burlington, Five Below, and Dell, with many straddles underpricing the actual moves. (22:38) - The Odd Block Onas Holdings (ONDS) Braze, Inc. VIX Debate: The show's central question: which level will the VIX hit first, 12 or 20? Both Uncle Mike and the Flowmaster believe the VIX will touch 12 first, driven by the ongoing bull market and low realized volatility, but they both note the high potential for a sudden, unexpected spike. Crypto Derivatives: A discussion on the future of crypto contracts, with a poll showing an overwhelming preference for cash-settled contracts over physically settled ones, due to simplicity and a desire to avoid dealing with the underlying assets. This broadcast argues that the Democratic Party has shown its true nature by actively protecting and supporting criminal illegal immigrants while simultaneously working to debank law-abiding conservatives. The speaker uses the case of "Saint Kilmar" Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member and human smuggler, as a prime example of Democrats' willingness to defend even the most "dreg" members of society for political gain. In stark contrast, the segment highlights a bombshell report from Fox News revealing that two major bank executives admitted they were pressured by the Obama and Biden administrations to deny services to conservatives. The speaker claims this selective application of justice, where criminals are given a pass and political opponents are financially targeted, exposes a dangerous, authoritarian agenda. The broadcast ends by celebrating President Trump's executive order to end cashless bail in Washington D.C., framing it as a crucial step in a broader effort to restore law and order and dismantle the "woke" financial system.

In this episode of the Great Books Podcast, Deacon Harrison Garlick and Dr. Daniel Shields discuss the significance of Plato's First Alcibiades, particularly in the context of its use at Wyoming Catholic College. They explore the themes of self-knowledge, the relationship between philosophy and politics, and the importance of mentorship in education. The conversation delves into the character of Alcibiades as a reflection of the student experience, the role of spiritedness in the pursuit of wisdom, and the communal nature of the philosophical life. Dr. Shields shares insights from his teaching experience, emphasizing the need for students to recognize their ignorance and the transformative power of philosophy as a way of life.Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for our reading schedule!Check out our collection of WRITTEN GUIDES!From our guide:First Alcibiades is both the beginning and a summation of Platonic philosophy. The dialogue “held pride of place in later antiquity as the ideal work with which to begin the study of Platonic philosophy.”[1] Its traditional subtitle was "on the nature of man,” and it was said First Alcibiades “contains the whole philosophy of Plato, as in a seed.”[2] The Islamic commentator, Al-Farabi, said that in First Alcibiades “all the Platonic questions are raised as if for the first time.”At the heart of the dialogue is the maxim “know thyself,” which is in turn at the heart of the philosophic life. Plato uses a dialogue between a young Alcibiades, age twenty, and an older Socrates, age forty, to explore the Delphic maxim within the context of a teacher and student.[3] The relationship of the teacher as a lover of the soul of the student gave rise to the term "Platonic love," an intense, but non-sexual love in pursuit of excellence.[4]The dramatic date of the dialogue is approximately 433 BC.[5] The composition date is a complicated question. First Alcibiades is considered by many to be a spurious dialogue or rather a dialogue written later by Platonists and not Plato. The dialogue sometimes has an earlier date around 390s BC and a later date in the 350s BC.[6] Some also hold the dialogue is a composite text with some being written by Plato and some being written by a later Platonist. It should be noted, however, that antiquity held that the dialogue was written by Plato, and the idea that it was not originated recently in nineteenth century German scholarship.[7] For our purposes, we will side with antiquity and default to Plato as the authentic author. Keywords: #Plato #Catholic #FirstAlcibiades #Philosophy #KnowThyself #GreatBooksVisit thegreatbookspodcast.com for more information![1] Plato, Complete Works, ed. One week before her wedding, on the Easter Morning in 2015 Stephanie Scott decided to stop by her classroom at Leeton High School to go over her lesson plans and other coverage documents she'd left for the substitute teacher one final time. By midafternoon, her fiancéAaron grew anxious by unanswered calls and texts, and reported her missing with Leeton Police. The Leeton community rallied, coordinating search efforts to this beloved member of their town. Sadly, on April 9th, twenty-four-year-old Vincent Stanford was formally charged with the murder of Stephanie Scott. The arrest of Vincent Stanford came as a surprise to Stephanie's friends and family, particularly because, as far as anyone could tell, he was little more than a stranger.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAustralian Associated Press. 2016.
