A new Federal Reserve report shows total household debt is more than $18 trillion, which is equivalent to nearly half the size of the U.S. economy. CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger has tips to help you cut down on your debt. Video shows the moment ICE agents detained a teacher at a Chicago day care center. Officials identified the woman as Diana Galeano, a Colombian national in the U.S. since 2023, seeking asylum. Children, teachers and parents have expressed outrage over the incident. Unionized Starbucks baristas say they're ready to strike on Nov. 13 unless the company finalizes a labor contract. The date coincides with Starbucks' annual Red Cup Day, one of its biggest sales events of the year, when free reusable red cups are given away to customers. In a statement to CBS News, Starbucks said the company is disappointed that the union voted to authorize a strike instead of coming to the bargaining table. Actor Rainn Wilson talks about his personal struggles with mental health and his new book, "Soul Bloom Workbook: Spiritual Tools for Modern Living," which aims to help readers kickstart their own spiritual journey. Claressa Shields is the first boxer, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals. She's also the only boxer to become the undisputed champion in three separate weight classes. Shields announced on "CBS Mornings" that she's signed a multi-fight contract worth $8 million. Singer Florence Welch speaks with CBS News' Anthony Mason about suffering an ectopic pregnancy on the band's last tour, the emergency surgery she had to have and the doubts she had about releasing new music. How Low Oxygen Shields Prostate Cancer from Ferroptosis Therapies

Oncotarget

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2025 3:49

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. While treatment options have improved, advanced stages of the disease remain difficult to manage. One promising approach involves a process called ferroptosis. This is a type of programmed cell death that relies on iron and lipid oxidation to kill cancer cells by damaging specific fats in their outer membrane. These fats are especially vulnerable in environments with normal oxygen levels. However, many prostate tumors grow in low-oxygen areas of the body, a condition known as hypoxia, where ferroptosis becomes less effective. A recent study, titled “Hypoxia induced lipid droplet accumulation promotes resistance to ferroptosis in prostate cancer,” and published on Oncotarget (Volume 16), explores how oxygen-poor environments help prostate cancer cells resist treatment and what strategies could help overcome this resistance. In this powerful episode of Fund the People's Defend Nonprofits, Defend Democracy series, Rusty sits down with Tonya Allen, President of the McKnight Foundation, to explore how philanthropy can respond to the Trump Administration's War on Charity, and serve as an active force for transformation. Tonya shares her roots in Detroit activism, lessons from community leaders who shaped her understanding of philanthropy as “an active verb,” and her belief that funders must embrace—not shy away from—power to change systems. She urges foundations to reject fear and isolation in the face of political attacks, reminding listeners that “silence isolates, and solidarity shields.”Tonya and Rusty also discuss how McKnight has transformed under her leadership—expanding its grantmaking to historic levels, adopting bold investment and climate commitments, and launching the $5 billion GroundBreak Coalition to build wealth for communities of color in the Twin Cities. She offers candid insights on trust-based philanthropy, supporting nonprofit workers, and how the Unite in Advance initiative is helping the social sector stand strong against coordinated threats. This episode is a master class in courageous, values-driven leadership in philanthropy.Guest Bio:Tonya Allen is a leader and a change agent with a passion for co-creating an equitable, sustainable world. In 2021, she became president of the McKnight Foundation, a Minnesota-based family foundation that advances a more just, creative, and abundant future where people and the planet thrive. In 2024, McKnight granted over $145 million—the highest charitable payout in the Foundation's history at 7 percent of its endowment—in support of equitable communities, a clean energy economy, global food systems, artists and culture bearers, and innovative neuroscience research. Beyond this increase in grantmaking, Tonya has worked to ensure that McKnight uses every tool in its toolbox as a philanthropic organization. In her first year at McKnight, Tonya championed using the Foundation's investments to advance net zero goals, and elevated McKnight's voice and leadership to rebuild Twin Cities neighborhoods and small businesses impacted by Covid-19 and the 2020 civil unrest. In 2022, Tonya helped launch the GroundBreak Coalition, an ambitious, multi-sector effort to close wealth gaps in Minneapolis-St. Paul. In 2023, GroundBreak announced nearly $1 billion in commitments towards its goals.Prior to joining McKnight, Tonya served as president and CEO of The Skillman Foundation, and as a program officer at the Charles Stewart Mott and Thompson McCully foundations. She was a co-founder and architect of Detroit Children's Fund, and the founder and director of Detroit Parent Network.Similar Episodes:MacArthur President Chooses Courage, Not Quiet – with John Palfrey, MacArthur FoundationNonprofits, the U.S. Constitution & the ACLU – with Mike Zamore, ACLUEpisode Links:Tonya Bio and Headshot.McKnight's “All in On Mission” blog postTonya's essay "Why We Increased Our Giving"Unite in Advance Op-Ed in Nonprofit Quarterly Council on Foundations' Sign-On Statement from PhilanthropyInside Philanthropy story on the GroundBreak CoalitionStatement from Tonya following the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis

I highly encourage everyone to read Makers of Civilization and The British Edda if you want TRUTH that will set you free of the Societal Control systems of religion and government.  This is different than deprogramming.  It's the omitted information that changes our outlook and puts us back in the driver's seat of our own fate. It is liberating in a positive manner, not in oppostion to something.  Defining yourself based on your opposition to an enemy is a weak and flawed way of developing an identity.  Instead, the Edda shows you who has been the originator of all positive innovation and religious concepts later co-opted and inverted by evil minded entities focused on controlling that which was superior to them.  You want to read those books. Do a search and find the PDFs.  Teach your children the truth. Kerry Mello-Parker, Director of Rare Diseases and REMS programs at Shields Health Solutions, addresses the complexities and challenges faced by patients with rare diseases including diagnostic delays and limited access to medication. Using an integrated specialty pharmacy model, Shields works with pharmacists to have direct access to the EHR, enabling better patient monitoring, shorter time to initiate medication, tracking outcomes, and providing patients with a direct line of communication to their care team. Pharmacists treating rare diseases are also supported with specialized information on medication administration, side effects and complex billing.  Kerry explains, "Shields Health Solutions is a specialty pharmacy accelerator. We partner with over 80 health systems across the United States. We support them in establishing and growing a specialty pharmacy. We help them to access critical medications. Some of them are not available at traditional pharmacies, and we support them in managing clinical quality care programs for their patients." "I'd like to step back a little and talk about what a rare disease is and how we define it. Currently, it is defined as a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people. However, over 7,000 rare diseases exist. So when we do the math, we come to see that they are not so rare. And some estimates show that up to 10% of the US population may actually have a rare disease. And what I've seen is that there are really three main complexities of treating rare diseases and challenges that patients may face. One of them is that there is a lack of available treatment options when compared with more common diseases. So, for example, only about 10% of rare diseases have an FDA-approved treatment option, but that is changing. We have the Orphan Drug Act, which has actually changed the landscape. It has incentivized and facilitated the development of medications to treat rare diseases." #ShieldsHealthSolutions #IntegratedCareModel #SpecialtyPharmacy #RareDiseases #MedicationAdherence shieldshealthsolutions.com Download the transcript here

Andrew Perer in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Turn-Head-Into-Sound-Valentine/dp/1916829147 Turn My Head Into Sound: A history of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine tells the story of one of the great sonic innovators of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. My Bloody Valentine have released only three albums in their forty-year career, but each of them has made a seismic impact. Isn't Anything (1988) is often cited as one of the Ur-texts of shoegaze and dream rock; Loveless (1991) is an undisputed masterpiece heralded by many as the best album of the 1990s; m b v (2013) is one of the best-loved comeback albums in recent memory. For those who know Kevin Shields and his work already, he is an indie-rock icon, but by other measures he's still a relatively obscure figure in the musical mainstream, and to date there has been no full-length appraisal of his work or his band's career. Until now. Shields is truly a one-of-a-kind musician, and this book—which fills in the gaps, corrects errors, and takes an objective look at the band's entire career, warts and all—paints the full picture of one of the most revolutionary sonic artists of our time. Turn My Head Into Sound is based on numerous interviews with people who were there (some of them speaking on the record for the first time) as well as an exhaustive archive of band-related material that the author has been assembling since 1990. Longtime fans of the band will find plenty of new information here, including the full story of the tumultuous period at Island Records following the release of Loveless. The lost years that followed would see Shields employed as engineer, producer, and remixer while also becoming an auxiliary member of Primal Scream. This book's analysis of this diverse but lesser-known work offers reader a much fuller picture of the relentless creativity and perfectionism at the center of his process.

With just a month until New Jersey's gubernatorial election, Dean Stuart Shapiro sits down with Kristoffer Shields, Director of Eagleton Institute's Center on the American Governor, for a special pre-gubernatorial debate episode of EJB Talks. They discuss how the race between Mikie Sherrill (D) and Jack Ciattarelli (R) has so far unfolded cautiously, the slowly-growing appearance of negative ads as the election cycle has progressed, and the challenges both candidates face in breaking through the noisy national news cycle. Professor Shields emphasizes that, regardless of the election outcome, the state budget and the continued affordability of living in New Jersey will be central issues for the next governor. He explains that generally debates are most likely to have an electoral impact if they produce a ‘memorable moment' that breaks into the news cycle. Professor Shields also briefly touches on turnout patterns, the influence of independent voters, and the broader national implications observers often draw from New Jersey's (and Virginia's) elections.Be sure to check your local listings to catch New Jersey's second (and final) gubernatorial debate! The debate is hosted by the Bloustein School, ABC7/WABC-TV New York, 6abc/WPVI-TV Philadelphia and New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, on Wednesday, Oct. 8  (7:00-8:00 p.m. ET). It will broadcast live on ABC7/WABC-TV New York, 6abc/WPVI-TV Philadelphia, and across the stations' streaming and digital platforms. The event is closed to the public.

We're living in a day when it feels like the very air is thick with — fear, division, and pressure coming at us from every direction. And the battle isn't only out there; it rages inside us too, with voices of doubt, anger, and discouragement. Just like the Roman soldier couldn't survive without his shield, none of us can face today unprotected. What scripture calls the shield of faith is God giving us covering, courage, and strength. And when we lift it together, faith doesn't just guard our lives — it becomes a fortress darkness can't conquer.

This week Elizabeth is joined by Mark Horowitz. We discuss two very different articles about viewpoint diversity. In one (unpublished) paper the authors examined thousands of college course syllabi for evidence that diverse perspectives were being introduced. In all 3 areas of focus (racism in the criminal justice system, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the ethics of abortion), faculty overwhelmingly assigned works representing a single perspective. There was very little evidence that students were formally introduced to books or articles identified as well known with respected alternative views. Based on our personal experiences in academia, we were more surprised about the magnitude of the effects than the general findings. While we could find little to criticize about the first article, we were less enamored with the second, which argues against viewpoint diversity. The author's focus is more political than scientific, and her examples are primarily extreme, unrelated to traditional academic goals, and may reveal more about her bias against Heterodox Academy than the futility of viewpoint diversity. She rightly argues that hiring individuals solely because they have unusual views would likely do little to advance science, but we find little else to admire about her narrow arguments and examples.  Mark shares his own research findings regarding groupthink in academia, the benefits of viewpoint diversity, and briefly describes the rewards and challenges of incorporating controversial topics and perspectives in the classroom.  Podcast notesThe (unpublished) Shields, et al. syllabus working paper can be found here: https://roseinstitute.cmc.edu/academic/faculty/profile/jon-shields The authors were interviewed by the Chronicle of Higher Education here: https://www.chronicle.com/article/these-scholarly-topics-are-hotly-debated-so-why-dont-syllabi-reflect-that and the paper was referenced in this New York Times editorial here:  https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/15/opinion/conservative-professors-viewpoint-diversity.htmlThe Siraganian op-ed for the American Association of University Professors Academe Magazine, which argues against viewpoint diversity, can be found here: Seven Theses Against Viewpoint Diversity | AAUPOther episodes with contributor Mark Horowitz: Top of the Class: Teachers with Lenient Grading get Higher Ratings: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s5-e6-top-of-the-class-attractive-teachers/id1537516628?i=1000699222059Contrarians at the Gate: Publishing Controversial Topics in an Era of Academic Progressivism: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s4-e26-contrarians-at-the-gate-publishing/id1537516628?i=1000668944697Making Up the Grade: A Call for Educators to Openly Address Eroding Standards: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s4-e19-making-up-the-grade-a-call-for-educators/id1537516628?i=1000661206148

professorjrod@gmail.comHave you ever wondered what invisible force protects your private messages, banking details, and personal information as they travel across the internet? The answer lies in cryptology—the fascinating science of securing information through mathematical techniques.Cryptology forms the backbone of modern cybersecurity, addressing the critical needs for confidentiality and integrity in our digital communications. Throughout this episode, Professor J-Rod breaks down complex cryptographic concepts into digestible, practical explanations that reveal how our online world maintains security. We journey through the three fundamental pillars of cryptographic security. First, symmetric encryption—the fastest method using a single shared key—powers everything from full disk encryption on your laptop to secure messaging. Next, we explore asymmetric encryption (public-key cryptography), which brilliantly solves the key distribution problem through mathematically-linked key pairs. Finally, we demystify hashing—the one-way process that creates digital fingerprints to verify data integrity without revealing the original content. Each concept comes alive through real-world examples: how your laptop protects files even if stolen, how websites establish secure connections with your browser, and why changing just one letter in a document completely transforms its hash value. The episode offers both theoretical understanding and practical knowledge about the technologies we unconsciously trust every day.Whether you're a cybersecurity novice or simply curious about how digital security works, this episode provides valuable insights into the cryptographic foundations that keep our digital lives private and secure. One week before her wedding, on the Easter Morning in 2015 Stephanie Scott decided to stop by her classroom at Leeton High School to go over her lesson plans and other coverage documents she'd left for the substitute teacher one final time. By midafternoon, her fiancéAaron grew anxious by unanswered calls and texts, and reported her missing with Leeton Police. The Leeton community rallied, coordinating search efforts to this beloved member of their town. Sadly, on April 9th, twenty-four-year-old Vincent Stanford was formally charged with the murder of Stephanie Scott. The arrest of Vincent Stanford came as a surprise to Stephanie's friends and family, particularly because, as far as anyone could tell, he was little more than a stranger.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAustralian Associated Press. 2016.
