Join us for a coastal goat hunt with Spencer Greening La'goot and Adam Foss as they recap their coastal goat mountain hunt in Gitga'at Territory. This was a wet and challenging hunt and offered an opportunity for reflection and learning from Indigenous knowledge and practice from time immemorial.   In this episode, Dylan, Adam, and Spencer dive into the deep connections between hunting, personal growth, and cultural traditions. They explore the balance between family responsibilities and outdoor adventures, the spiritual and ethical dimensions of hunting, and the significance of mountain goats in Indigenous traditions. Through their experiences in bow hunting and navigating rugged mountain terrain, they highlight the importance of patience, mental resilience, and traditional knowledge. The conversation also touches on the role of storytelling in preserving Indigenous hunting perspectives and ecological wisdom. Find La'goot here! Find Adam here! Key Takeaways: Hunting is as much about the experience as the harvest. Mountain goats hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. Success in hunting is shaped by knowledge, preparation, and respect for nature. Ethical considerations and conservation must include Indigenous perspectives. Storytelling plays a crucial role in passing down hunting traditions and wisdom. Tune in for an insightful discussion on the challenges, lessons, and connections that make hunting more than just a pursuit—it's a journey of growth, respect, and heritage.   Chapters 00:00 New Year Reflections and Personal Growth 03:05 Balancing Parenthood and Outdoor Adventures 06:00 Cultural Significance of Mountain Goats 08:52 The Journey of Goat Hunting: A Shared Experience 11:57 Understanding the Mountain Goat: A Hunter's Perspective 15:10 The Challenges of Bow Hunting Mountain Goats 18:11 Research and Conservation: The Importance of Traditional Knowledge 21:11 The Nuances of Goat Herd Management 23:54 The Spiritual Connection in Hunting 26:57 The Art of the Hunt: A Personal Story 29:46 The Ethics of Hunting and Wildlife Management 43:35 Reflecting on Past Experiences 43:58 Choosing the Right Location for Hunting 45:00 Facing Adverse Weather Conditions 46:12 The Role of Relationships in Hunting Projects 46:48 The Challenges of Mountain Hunting 50:01 Describing the Hunting Environment 51:03 The Toughness of Traditional Hunters 53:54 Navigating Difficult Terrain 01:00:02 The First Night's Struggles 01:06:00 Enduring Continuous Rain 01:09:00 Strategies for Managing Moisture 01:15:02 Lessons from Ancestors and Traditional Knowledge 01:17:19 The Privilege of Indigenous Hunting Practices 01:19:50 The Challenges of the Hunt 01:21:58 The Search for the Mountain Goat 01:25:42 The Moment of Truth 01:32:02 The Ethics of Hunting 01:35:10 Reflections on the Hunting Experience 01:40:19 Cultural Significance of Hunting 01:43:20 The Journey Home 01:51:12 Future Projects and Storytelling

Is bow hunting for you? I have pondered this question over the years of hunting. If you are new to hunting or well on your hunting journey, you have likely asked this question too.    In this episode, I am joined by Adam Foss. Adam is a professional photographer and is known throughout the community as an exceptional bow hunter. As I have got to know Adam over the past couple of years, I've been inspired to pick up my bow and start my journey as a bow hunter.   I've invited Adam on the podcast to discuss the opportunities and benefits of bow hunting. But we also recognize the challenges and commitment to be a successful bow hunter. So we discuss the necessary steps to take to become a bow hunter.    I'm teaming up with Adam to build a bow-hunting workshop. Over the years, many folks have asked when we will create an EatWild Bow Hunting Workshop. Well, here it is, and we've got one of the best bow hunters, storytellers, and good humans to lead it.    In his podcast, we touch on the motivations for the bow hunter, the benefits, the challenges, expectations for practice and reasonable outcomes.   You can join us for the inaugural EatWild Bow Hunting Workshop. We're hosting it on May 12 and 13th at the Arosa ranch in the Okanogan. You can find out more on our website.   As always, this podcast is brought to you by Seek Outside. I love elk hunting. I also love exploring.  I managed to talk my friends Spencer Greening and Adam Foss into joining me on the quest to find Elk Heaven. I had an idea about a river that might be bountiful with elk without any hunting pressure. The packrafts were the ideal mode of transportation to set out on an expedition to find Elk Heaven.    Spencer Greening is an academic studying indigenous approaches to wildlife management, and Adam Foss is a professional photographer that works in the hunting and conservation world. This was Spencer's first Elk hunt and Adams's first packraft expedition so we share their learnings throughout the podcast.    Throughout our days on the river, we have some insightful conversations and reflect on our motivations and passion for hunting.   We struggled to put a successful hunt together as we explored this new area. Hot weather and a full moon made it difficult to find Elk out and about during the day. By far the best way to be a successful hunter is to go back to an area where you've had success before. However, if you have a passion for exploring new places, then it's hard to go back to the same place to hunt. We struggle with this question and talk about it in depth in this podcast. Exploration versus going with what you know.   I opted to roll this podcast out in one longer story, so I hope you enjoy it.    As always this podcast is brought to you by our friends at West Coast Kitchen Canada. Adam Foss grew up hunting sheep in the mountains with his father and brother. He learned at a young age what it looked like to work hard for something, admire the beauty of accomplishment, and fully appreciate where sheep call home. If you want to hunt sheep, you're going to experience some pretty incredible yet rugged country. Sheep hunting doesn't come easy, which is probably why those that do it are in a league of their own.Fast forward to today, and you'll still find Adam chasing sheep in the fall months when he has the opportunity to, but you might also notice the camera hanging around his neck because he's now a professional photographer who specializes in documenting hunts for some of the biggest names in the industry. He's somehow found a way to make a living from the things he loves most and is without a doubt excelling at it. His skill set as both an outdoorsman and a creative makes him a bit of a unicorn when it comes to the world he works in.Adam's imagery can be found on the pages of photo books and in high-end ads for well-known brands. Chances are that if you follow brands like Sitka, Yeti, or Matthews then you've seen plenty of his work. His images are absolutely stunning and have a way of transporting the viewer to the exact moment in time when the picture was taken. That's what drew me to Adam and his work. I've followed him on social media for years and was always curious about his life, his upbringing, and his thoughts on all of it. Having watched from afar for far too long, I decided to reach out to see if he'd be willing to join me for an episode. He kindly agreed and I couldn't have been more excited. I wanted our conversation to go where it needed to go. I didn't have a specific agenda other than to get to know who Adam is and why he does what he does. Hunting is hard in the mountains and it's made even harder when you have a camera slung around your neck with clients eagerly awaiting an image that only happens once in a lifetime. You can't reproduce moments of adventure; you either get or you don't and Adam knows exactly how to do that.We spend the first portion of the episode getting to know Adam, his upbringing, and how he came to start a freelance photography business with his wife then transition into a more philosophical conversation centered around hunting. Hunting has always been something difficult to explain to those who don't engage in it. No matter how hard you may try to express what it is and what it means to you, all efforts seem to fall flat and never really measure up. It's one of those things you have to experience to fully understand. We discuss this struggle to explain hunting and much more so if you're into that kind of thing, then you're in for a treat.Adam has made a profession out of telling the story of hunting through imagery. He spends time with hunters, guides, and wildlife conservationists, taking care to capture moments that mean something. I am humbled to put Adam on my list of guests and honored to have had the opportunity to connect with him for an episode.I sincerely hope you enjoy this chat with Adam Foss as much as I did. Here in the United States, bail can be an enormous deciding factor on who goes to prison and who doesn’t. And for how long they go or don’t go...regardless of guilt or not. But do you know how the bail system really works? Who profits from it? Who is put at a detriment because of it? Likely not. So we’re dissecting the bail system—and getting real about its inherent, systemic issues. Today on Business Casual, I’m interviewing Adam Foss, a widely respected criminal justice reform advocate and an advisor to the Bail Project. He’ll explain precisely how the bail system fits into the broader private prison ecosystem in the United States. A small taste?Did you know the concept of bail dates back to feudal England? And really hasn’t been meaningfully rethought since serfs were a thing?Or that some bail funds pick and choose which incarcerated people to help, while others take an “anything goes” approach, regardless of alleged offense? There’s so much more to learn. And after a summer of reading the words “donate to bail funds” over and over again, it’s high time you get an idea of what bail funds actually do...and why they want to be put out of business. Listen now.

It is a conversation between Alex Casar, Alex Gibbons, Rae Hanke, and our invited guest. It presents an interactive discussion and thoughtful reflection on the topic of Social Determinants of Health, which was a cornerstone of this year’s meeting. Social determinants of health refer to factors like economic stability, housing, transportation, physical and psychological safety, zip code and geography, literacy and education, hunger, poverty, community support and engagement, discrimination, stress, and linguistic and cultural competencies from providers that affect healthcare outcomes like quality of care, mortality, morbidity, life expectancy, and even healthcare costs. We had the opportunity to interview Adam Foss – a lawyer, former District Attorney, and founder of Prosecutor Impact, a nonprofit organization improving community safety in the United States through culture change in the criminal justice system. April 29, 2019 at the Boston Athenæum. Join us for a conversation with two leading voices in the movement to bring about criminal justice reform, New York Times Magazine journalist Emily Bazelon and Boston-based advocate and former prosecutor Adam Foss. In their respective fields, both grapple with the fact that the image of the American criminal justice system as a contest between the prosecution and the defense with judges ensuring a fair fight does not, in fact, match the reality. Much of the time, it is prosecutors more than judges who control the outcome of a case, and oftentimes with devastating consequences. Emily Bazelon’s new book entitled Charged examines this heretofore unchecked power of prosecutors and how this power undermines the American criminal justice system. She exposes the damage overzealous prosecutors can inflict alongside those—like Adam Foss—who seek to reform the system. Adam Foss, who formerly served as Assistant District Attorney in the Juvenile Division of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, has firsthand insight into the connection between prosecution and mass incarceration. Since his viral Ted Talk on prosecution in February in 2016, Adam Foss has gone on to found Prosecutor Impact, a non-profit developing training and curriculum for prosecutors to reframe their role in the criminal justice system. With participants uniquely suited to speaking on the present issues afflicting the justice system, this event will shine a light on the little known cause for enormous injustice, while also offering a vision for a better future.

Adam Foss is a world-class hunter who has transformed his passion for wildlife and wild places into a rewarding career in filmmaking and photography. Adam has been obsessed with wilderness adventure for practically his entire life. At age 24, he was the youngest person to take all four species of North American sheep with a bow, an amazing achievement for a hunter of any age. But despite this accomplishment and others, Adam is much more focused on the process of the hunt—spending challenging days in the mountains, forming long-lasting friendships, stewarding public lands, and conserving legendary big game species. • Adam was born in the Canadian Rockies and spent his youth bow hunting with his father and older brother. As he grew older, his hunting trips expanded in geography and complexity, and he has now hunted many of the world’s wildest places for some of the most renowned big game. Adam initially considered a career in wildlife biology, but decided to go the creative route instead—he and his wife are now the owners of Foss Media, a company that creates films and photography for some of the most iconic outdoor brands today. As you’ll hear, Adam is passionate about wildlife, storytelling, and conservation, but he is equally humble, grounded, and grateful for being able to do what he loves on a daily basis. • We caught up over Skype, as Adam and his wife are currently traveling around Canada and the American West working on creative projects. We had a fun conversation and managed to cover a lot in just over an hour. We discussed Adam’s childhood in Canada and the lessons he learned from hunting with his father and brother. We chatted about how Adam values the process of hunting over the end goal of taking an animal and our shared theory that hunting taps into something primal in our human DNA. We talked in detail about conservation, specifically the role of public lands in both the United States and Canada. Adam also offered some wise advice to people who want to learn to hunt but may not have a long-standing connection to the sport. And as usual, we discussed Adam’s favorite books, films, and his most powerful outdoor experience. • This was such a fun conversation, and it’s clear that Adam has thought long and hard about these issues. I really enjoyed getting to know Adam, and I think you will too. ••• http://mountainandprairie.com/adam-foss/ ••• TOPICS DISCUSSED: 2:58 - How Adam describes his work 7:15 - Adam’s upbringing in Canada 8:50 - Hunting with his dad in the mountains 10:45 - University in British Columbia and more far reaching hunts 12:30 - Adam’s early career goals 14:30 - Lessons learned from hunting with his father 17:45 - Breaking down hunts into manageable peices 20:45 - The mental game of hunting 23:00 - Process over goals 25:45 - Adam’s love of adventure and challenges 27:35 - Influences and mentors 33:15 - Adam’s current goals for a hunt 38:00 - South America trip 39:30 - Hunting as a part of human's DNA 43:15 - Advice to new hunters 48:15 - Importance of public lands 52:15 - Thoughts on wolves and ecological balance 59:30 - Favorite books 1:02:55 - Favorite documentaries 1:05:20 - Most powerful outdoor experience 1:15:00 - Connect with Adam online

On this episode, Adam (Janke) is joined by the Fossman himself, Adam Foss. Adam (Foss) was one of the earliest guests we ever featured on the show and a lot has changed since then. He has embarked on a new career path and the hunting media landscape has never been more dynamic. The two Adams spend most of this episode discussing how the “story” of conservation has been told over the past few decades and how we can and should use creativity to tell that story in a more resonant fashion moving forward. Adam (Foss) is doing a lot of exciting work in the conservation space, is very passionate about conservation and the role hunting plays in achieving conservation goals, and given this shared passion, the Adams have a very interesting discussion about how storytelling plays a critical role in keeping both hunting and conservation relevant in today’s media landscape. A chokehold is defined as a grappling hold that critically reduces or prevents either air or blood from passing through the neck. Author, professor and former prosecutor Paul Butler says this term -- "chokehold" -- is also representative of the oppressive and strangulating American criminal-justice system and its treatment of black men. With such notions in place, how can society begin to move away from its learned fear of black men and a law-enforcement system that actively works against black men. Professor Butler and former prosecutor and criminal-justice activist Adam Foss discuss this deep-rooted bias against black men, how this discrimination has evolved over generations and throughout our country, and the true reasoning behind the #TakeAKnee protest movement in professional football. Guests: Paul Butler, Georgetown Law professor, former prosecutor, celebrated scholar of race and the criminal justice system, and author of "Chokehold: Policing Black Men"; and Adam Foss, former Suffolk County assistant district attorney and criminal-justice activist based in Boston.
