Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Mark R. Warren to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Join us as Mark shares insights from his latest book, Willful Defiance, shedding light on how exclusionary discipline policies, such as suspensions and expulsions for minor infractions, have been instrumental in pushing children from the classroom to the criminal justice system. As the conversation unfolds, Mark delves into the broader implications of these policies, connecting the school-to-prison pipeline with the rise of mass incarceration and systemic racial control. Through inspiring stories of resistance, Mark focuses on the role of parents and community organizers—particularly from Black and Latinx communities—who have been leading the charge against these policies. From grassroots campaigns to transform disciplinary practices to the adoption of restorative justice and practices, Mark emphasizes how community-driven efforts are creating alternative pathways for students to stay engaged in learning and avoid the prison system. Mark is a professor of public policy and public affairs at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He is a sociologist and community-engaged scholar who studies and works with community, parent, and youth organizing groups seeking to promote racial equity, educational justice, and community liberation. Mark is the author of six books, most recently Willful Defiance: The Movement to Dismantle the School-to-Prison Pipeline. Mark has co-founded several networks promoting activist scholarship, community organizing, and education justice, including the People's Think Tank on Educational Justice, the Urban Research-Based Action Network, and the Special Interest Group on Community and Youth Organizing in the American Educational Research Association.  Tune in to learn more about the profound impact of systemic racism in schools, the urgent need for policy change, and the power of restorative practices to foster healing and community connection. In this week's episode, both our storytellers examine the importance of diversity and representation in science – and not just in their research sample. Part 1: While serving on a diversity panel, biologist Latasha Wright is asked if representation in STEM matters, prompting her to reflect on her experiences. Latasha Wright, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, received her Ph.D. from NYU Langone Medical Center in cell and molecular biology. She continued her scientific training at Johns Hopkins University and Weill Cornell Medical Center. She has co-authored numerous publications, presented her work at international and national conferences. BioBus enables Latasha to share her love of science with a new generation of scientists. Latasha spearheaded the creation of the first BioBase community lab, the BioBus internship program, and our Harlem expansion. Everyday that Latasha spends teaching students about science in this transformative environment helps her remember that science is fun. She loves sharing the journey of discovery with students of all ages. Part 2: LFC's childhood experiences with nature – and with bigotry – come together to inform her career in environmentalism. LFC has been organizing in Missouri for almost 10 years now. Starting in Reproductive Justice through a faithful lens, to School to Prison Pipeline and Statewide Policy initiatives, to now Environmental Justice/ Climate Change. How are victims of intimate partner violence meant to protect themselves—and, often, their children—without winding up dead, in hospital, or prison? It's a situation that many find themselves in. Approximately 15 percent of women in the United States are victims of intimate partner violence, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. But the legal system is not set up to help them. In this episode the executive director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, Debbie Mukamal, and Stanford Law student Jacqueline Lewittes join Pam and Rich to discuss the Center's new study “Fatal Peril: Unheard Stories from the IPV-to-Prison Pipeline and Other Stories Touched by Violence,” that offers groundbreaking data and personal stories from women currently in prison because of intimate partner violence. They also touch on the systemic failures in the justice system in handling these complex cases.  Connect:Episode Transcripts >>> Stanford Legal Podcast WebsiteStanford Legal Podcast >>> LinkedIn PageRich Ford >>>  Twitter/XPam Karlan >>> Stanford Law School PageStanford Law School >>> Twitter/XStanford Lawyer Magazine >>> Twitter/XLinks:Debbie Mukamal  >>> Stanford Law School PageFatal Peril: Unheard Stories from the IPV-to-Prison Pipeline >>> Stanford Law School Page(00:00:00) Chapter 1: Introductions and Goals of the Research Hosts Pam Karlan and Rich Ford discuss how the project on women incarcerated for killing their abusers began during the pandemic, sparked by a lack of national data on these cases with Debbie Mukamal and SLS student Jacqueline Lewittes. Mukamal explains how her team's long-standing relationships with the California Department of Corrections facilitated their research access despite COVID-19 restrictions.(00:04:12) Chapter 2: Research Design and Challenges The team outlines the complexities of designing the study, including broadening the focus beyond intimate partner killings and overcoming barriers like accessing reliable court records. According to A National Survey of Children's Health, 50,000 preschoolers are suspended at least once; on average, 250 preschoolers are expelled or suspended every school day. Overwhelmingly, those children are disproportionately Black. The higher rates of excessive discipline for Black children can lead to a number of issues. Even if the child is not suspended, children understand when they are not seen as good enough and often react negatively to that, leading to higher dropout rates and often incarceration, creating the preschool-to-prison pipeline. Ishmael Pruitt is hoping to change the trajectory for young students who might find themselves in that pipeline. His struggles in college and his years working as a professional in higher education led him to believe that the solution to social change comes through education and empowerment of students. "My life's mission is to stimulate the ambition of our next generation of leaders," says Pruitt, who believes that "when students are able to see themselves beyond their inherited circumstances, their understanding of education is shifted from a destination to a tool that will create better days for themselves, their families, and their communities." This belief led him to become the co-founder and CEO of Project Optimism. This non-profit organization works directly with schools to ensure students see the value of education and are not left behind. As the underbelly of politics during the Trump era unfurls before us, we shed light on the menacing threats cast upon Stormy Daniels and her child, overlooked by mainstream narratives. My co-host Ty and I unravel these perturbing ties of allegiance, where loyalty can spell danger and the line between the law and the lawless blurs. We dissect the infamous pipeline from the Trump campaign to incarceration, scrutinizing figures like Michael Avenatti and Peter Navarro, while pondering the audacity of reassembling a team with such a checkered past. Grab a slice of Big Lou's as we juxtapose serious political discourse with impromptu soda runs and pajama-clad escapades.Ty and I navigate a spectrum of topics, from personal triumphs like his recent wedding to the societal pressures women face, especially in the realm of plastic surgery. We contrast these with the peculiar trajectory of Isabella DeLuca, who swung from the Capitol attack to Congressional employment. Our candid conversation drifts into the intricacies of reality TV and the struggle for self-acceptance in an age of aesthetic enhancement. We underscore the perils of beauty standards and share our unvarnished takes on the pursuit of perfection.Capping off our episode, we bestow the 'Shithole of the Week' title upon Nancy Mace for stoking political firestorms, lamenting voter disengagement in local elections and the rise of cult-like movements. As we conjure the themes of True Detective, we stress the vital need to remain alert to the threats against democracy, drawing parallels between the cyclical patterns of political discord and the philosophy that history is doomed to repeat itself. This episode is a rollercoaster of political commentary, raw authenticity, and an impassioned plea for vigilance in safeguarding our democratic values.Support the showSupport the show:https://www.buzzsprout.com/2003879/supportFollow our show's hosts on Twitter: twitter.com/@CoolTXchicktwitter.com/@Caroldedwinetwitter.com/taradublinrockstwitter.com/blackknight10ktwitter.com/@pardonpodFind Tara's book here:Taradublinrocks.comFind Ty's book here:Consequence of ChoiceSubscribe to Tara's substack:taradublin.substack.comSubscribe to Ty's substack:https://theworldasiseeit.substack.com/ Support Our Sponsor: Sheets & GigglesEucalyptus Sheets (Recommended):Sleep Mask (I use this every night)Eucalyptus Comfortor...

Despite the state of Georgia being unnecessarily deadly for anyone in jails or prisons, Georgia Republican legislators still felt the need to make it harder for the poor and working class to bail themselves out of jail for a larger number of alleged crimes - some of them misdemeanors. Senate bill 63 (SB63) awaits Governor Brian Kemp's signature, but not before advocates for the poor bemoan the thoughtlessness and senselessness of the legislation. Such a law - I believe - will have the unintended consequence of having cops have to decide the necessity of taking people in with jails & prisons already crowded throughout the state. The thing is, this new bill is a callous, cruel attack on not just the poor, but a suppression of free speech, as it targets protests and bail funds and non-profits (even churches) who raise funds to bail out more than three individuals in a year. Fani Willis has had a bad string of weeks, so it's hard not to notice when a bipartisan batch of ethics experts filed a "friend of the court" brief Monday opining that nothing she (nor Nathan Wade, for that matter) has done warrants her being disqualified or acting improperly. Much of what they wrote in the brief you've heard from Willis' defenders (and me, though I still believe her actions were foolish) but it still had to feel good for the embattled Fulton County prosecutor after a barrage of bad press. Back to legislative antics under the gold dome, Georgia Republicans can't help but to pander to gun fetishists with a sales tax holiday for gun & ammo purchases a week in October under the guise of being "pro-hunting." The problem is the tax holiday isn't limited to just hunting rifles & shotguns; because of course. Senator Jason Esteves was among those on the left who point that out. Hear his impassioned floor speech. Lastly, forgive me; I had to savor yesterday's ridiculousness in the House as Marjorie Taylor Greene struggled with second grade math and got roasted by Rep. Jamie Raskin (againnnn) and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (againnnn). First, she and her MAGA crew failed to impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas, then they couldn't pass the Israel funding measure they once before said had to be tied to Ukraine and border funding - which they won't even put up for a vote.

The story of how Black and Brown parents, students and members of low-income communities of color organized to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in their local schools and built a movement that spread across the country.  In Willful Defiance: The Movement to Dismantle the School-to-Prison Pipeline (Oxford UP, 2021), Mark R. Warren documents how Black and Brown parents, students, and low-income communities of color organized to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in their local schools and built an intersectional movement that spread across the country. Examining organizing processes in Mississippi, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other localities, he shows how relatively small groups of community members built the power to win policy changes to reduce suspensions and expulsions by combining deep local organizing with resources from the national movement. As a result, over the course of twenty years, the movement to combat the school-to-prison pipeline resulted in falling suspension rates across the country and began to make gains in reducing police presence in schools, especially in places where there have been sustained organizing and advocacy efforts. In documenting the struggle organizers waged to build national alliances led by community groups and people most impacted by injustice rather than Washington-based professional advocates, Warren offers a new model for movements that operate simultaneously at local, state and national levels, while primarily oriented to support and spread local organizing. In doing so, he argues for the need to rethink national social justice movements as interconnected local struggles whose victories are lifted and spread, In the end, the book highlights lessons from the school-to-prison pipeline movement for organizers, educators, policymakers and a broader public seeking to transform deep-seated and systemic racism in public schools and the broader society. In The Prescription-To-Prison Pipeline: The Medicalization and Criminalization of Pain (Duke UP, 2023), Michelle Smirnova argues that the ongoing opioid drug epidemic is the result of an endless cycle in which suffering is medicalized and drug use is criminalized. Drawing on interviews with eighty incarcerated individuals in Missouri correctional institutions, Smirnova shows how contradictions in medical practices, social ideals, and legal policies disproportionately criminalize the poor for their social condition. This criminalization further exacerbates and perpetuates drug addiction and poverty. Tracing the processes by which social issues are constructed as biomedical ones that necessitate pharmacological intervention, Smirnova highlights how inequitable surveillance, policing, and punishment of marginalized populations intensify harms associated with both treatment and punishment, especially given that the distinctions between the two have become blurred. By focusing on the stories of people whose pain and pharmaceutical treatment led to incarceration, Smirnova challenges the binary of individual and social problems, effectively exploring how the conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use may exacerbate outcomes such as relapse, recidivism, poverty, abuse, and death.
