Ok, ok, we are skipping ahead in our numbering sequence, but how could we resist? The film the Shining is based on Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name but has a number of unique storytelling elements of its own. The horror novelist famously disapproved of Kubrick’s treatment, but that hasn’t stopped the film from being a landmark in its own right. I first saw the Shining as a youngster, much too young to deal with this sinister ghost story and it has haunted me ever since. Sean McCann returns to offer further insights into hidden themes and sub-plots encoded into the movies of the most fascinating film-maker of them all, Stanley Kubrick. In particular, he focuses on ‘Lolita,’ from 1962, and Kubrick’s final film, 1999’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut,’ suggesting that both carry subtle references to the ‘elite’ ruling class’s predilection towards paedophilia, and the subjects of satanic ritual abuse and trauma-based mind control.
