Director Justin Kurzel has crafted a filmography built on exploring the impact of trauma and violence on a nation. Whether it be his excoriating debut film Snowtown or the acts of cautionary storytelling with Nitram and The Order, Kurzel's work questions how violence and trauma lingers in our bodies, our minds, and in our lands. That's a notion that he explores with impressive strength with his first foray into documentary filmmaking, Ellis Park. There's catharsis in Ellis Park, partially because of Warren Ellis and his healing violin, but – as the man says himself – his presence is minimal compared to the presence of Femke and the conservationists. Yet, when paired with Kurzel and editor Nick Fenton, they collectively bring light to a horrifying trade that scars the environment. I'm shaken by Ellis Park because of its presentation of trauma, but equally so for its depiction of empathy, consideration, and support. This is, oddly, my first time talking to Justin Kurzel. Having listened to and read countless interviews by him, I was aware that I would be engaging with someone who is a deeply empathetic soul, yet I was still left disarmed by his connection to his openness about his connection to his work, his family, and to the art of cinema. To support the film, Warren Ellis and Justin Kurzel will be running Q&A sessions around the nation. All of the details are in the show notes, but make sure to pick up tickets in advance when the film kicks off with a virtual Q&A with Warren Ellis at Perth's Luna Leederville cinemas on 5 June, concluding with a Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney exclusive event on 8 June at the State Theatre. Ellis Park then releases wide across Australia on 12 June 2025.The Ellis Park sanctuary is part of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, a non-government, non-profit organisation that was established in 2004 to protect Indonesian wildlife, with a focusing on animal cruelty and rescuing animals from the noxious illegal animal trade network. Yes Adelaide I am looking at you...While Adelaide isn't the "murder capital" in a literal sense, it has gained a reputation for being one due to a few high-profile cases, including the Snowtown murders and the Truro murders. These cases have contributed to a perception of the city as a place with a high murder rate. It's probably not true that it's dangerous ..but no offence I won't be going there any time soon! Podcast listeners - see the art work we talk about in this episode here Step into the gripping world of Richard Lewer — where drawing, painting, and video meet the raw edges of human experience. Richard doesn't look away from life's toughest stories. From the deeply personal — like the final days of his father's life — to the harrowing and socially charged, including the tragic death of an Indigenous child in custody and the haunting Snowtown murders, he takes it all on. But never with shock tactics. His work is quietly powerful — full of feeling, sensitivity, and a surprising touch of humour. And the surfaces he paints on? Anything but traditional — think steel, aluminium, formica table tops, even billiard tables. Richard is a multi-award-winning artist whose work has appeared in major public and private collections. He's been a finalist multiple times in the Archibald and Sulman Prizes, and his recent acquisition by the National Gallery of Australia will soon be part of an upcoming exhibition and tour. This was the perfect time to sit down for a deep conversation — just ahead of his new show ‘The stories that persist are not always true' opening on 10 April at Hugo Michell Gallery. Richard is also represented by Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane and Suite Gallery in New Zealand. Welcome to the Cinema Australia Podcast. In this episode I'm joined by Charles Williams to discuss Inside, a prison drama starring Guy Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis, Tammy MacIntosh and newcomer, Vincent Miller whose name you should make note of because you're going to hear a lot more from this impressive young actor. Here's the synopsis: After being transferred from juvenile to adult prison, Mel (Vincent Miller) is taken under the wing of both Mark (Cosmo Jarvis), Australia's most despised criminal, and Warren (Guy Pearce), a soon-to-be-paroled inmate. As a paternal triangle grows between them, we see that even the worst of men have a little bit of good inside that will be their undoing. Charles Williams is an acclaimed Australian film director whose short film All These Creatures won the Cannes Film Festival's Short Film Palme d'Or as well as an AACTA award here at home. Charles grew up in a remote country town in northern Victoria. Since then, his films have gone on to screen at more than 200 of the world's most prestigious festivals. He has also been selected as part of TIFF's Filmmaker Lab, The Golden Globes Filmmaker Residency and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Inside is Charles' debut feature film. It has a discomforting psychological depth to it reminiscent of the films of Justin Kurzel like Nitram and Snowtown, and Thomas M. Wright's The Stranger. There's nothing familiar about Charles Williams' filmmaking style though. Inside feels completely unique both visually and narratively. Anyway… enjoy.

In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the harrowing details of the Snowtown Murders, also known as the Bodies in the Barrels Murders. This case, which spanned several years and involved a series of brutal killings, shook Australia to its core. Central to the case was John Bunting, a seemingly ordinary man with a dark fascination for death, who manipulated and recruited vulnerable individuals into his twisted circle, including Robert Wagner, Mark Hayden, and James Vlasakis. With a deep-seated hatred for those he deemed as deviants, Bunting targeted and killed 12 victims, using torture, deceit, and financial exploitation. The discovery of bodies stored in barrels within an old bank vault in Snowtown brought the chilling extent of their crimes to light, leading to the eventual conviction of the perpetrators. Throughout the episode, we explore the complex relationships and psychological manipulation at play, the police investigation that led to the case's unraveling, and the broad societal implications of the murders. Join us as we unravel the intricacies of one of Australia's most infamous criminal cases, shedding light on the dark nature of human behavior and the importance of vigilance and justice in society.00:00 Introduction to the Snowtown Murders00:42 John Bunting: The Mastermind01:40 The Accomplices and Their Vulnerabilities02:19 The Victims and Their Horrific Fates03:58 The Brutal Methods and Disposal of Bodies05:17 The Investigation Breakthrough05:34 The Grim Discovery in Snowtown06:55 The Media Frenzy and Trials12:28 The Lasting Impact and Lessons Hosted on Acast. When the bodies in the barrels were found, Australia was rocked. A murder investigation was underway, and forensics was set to play a huge part. But where to even begin? Professor Roger Byard AO had been working in forensics for just two weeks when he got the call. A set of barrels had been found in a bank vault, and he was needed at the scene. The investigation that followed was taxing on Roger, and the community in South Australia, but the work was meaningful and would lead to successful convictions and answers for families. Unpack this case and more with host Kathryn Fox, as Roger takes her through his career in forensics and beyond. If this content affected you, the number for Lifeline is 13 11 14. In an episode about the most infamous series of murders in the history of the state of South Australia, somehow the murders are the least interesting part of the story. The characters in this tale, collectively, are some of the most dysfunctional we've ever covered. No one is even remotely normal, healthy, or well-adjusted in an episode that comes across like an advertisement for why you should never, ever, ever visit the suburbs north of Adelaide. Between 1992 and 1999, four men in South Australia murdered 12 people - most of whom were friends or family members. In May 1999, investigators were working on a missing persons investigation when they discovered barrels hidden in an old bank vault in Snowtown, South Australia. The remains of 8 people were found inside the barrels, and when they learned the extent of the crimes that had been committed, the “bodies in barrels” murders became known one of Australia's most horrific cases. In May 1999, two detectives followed a trail of suspicious missing persons cases to an old, red-brick bank in Snowtown, South Australia. As they head inside, they head straight for the bank's vault where they find six large plastic barrels containing human remains. They also find handcuffs, knives, a saw, boxes of disposable gloves and bottles of hydrochloric acid. They'd come to realise they'd found the dumping grounds of Australia's worst serial killings, crimes that would see four men sent to prison with lengthy sentences. But now, 25 years later, two of these men could soon be eligible for release. Interview with Jed Kurzel This week on Sync Music Matters I'm talking to Australian singer-songwriter, guitarist and film composer Jed Kurzel Jed originally started out as the singer and frontman of the blues rock duo The Mess Hall before turning his attention to composing for film. He won the Screen Music Awards Film Score of The Year for his debut film Snowtown. The film which gained international recognition, explores the relationships between the murderous gang members behind a spate of killings in Adelaide, Australia in the 1990s Jed has since gone on to score feature films like The Pope's Exorcist, The Babadook, Slow West and Macbeth to name but a few. In this interview with Jed Kurzel we chat about his childhood obsession with sport and somewhat unplanned foray into scoring film. Listen to Jed Kurzel on Spotify

We're going back down under, to cover our third Australian serial killer. Ivan Milat was an Australian serial killer who terrorized the Outback for years. He was convicted of 7 murders, although he was suspected in many more. He liked attacking backpackers, which there were always plenty of. And, most of them were foreigners, so he could get away with it. We cover his back story from his harsh upbringing which led to his crimes, as well as a very abusive husband. Also, the extremely close knit relationship he had with his siblings. They had a gang that robbed banks, and if one got caught, another would take the blame for it. This led to an exile to escape justice, although he came back, and they story continued. He didn't just kill his victims. He tortured them for hours before killing them. He was ultimately caught, and his trial was explosive. He was almost found innocent! It would take the testimony of a tourist who survived an attack coming to Australia on his own dime to testify, combined with weapons evidence to put him away. Ivan Milat was realistically the most prolific Australian serial killer, but because he was only convicted of 7, that title goes to John Bunting, and the Snowtown and Bodies in Barrels murders, which we covered in Episode 48. Ivan was also the inspiration for the Wolf Creek horror movie franchise. There's a lot to unpack in this episode before we get to his first murder, but keep in mind...his first murder was more like his 20th. Our hosting switcheroo continues as Joe helms a full analysis and fix of 2016's Assassin's Creed, Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender's attempt to adapt the hit video game franchise to the silver screen. It didn't win any Razzies, but Jack got to do Caligula. In this 1st part, we breakdown what did and didn't work about the film, explore the connections between the film and games and briefly look into the series' history, and look into what some critics had to say. Jack laments his lack of virtual parkour skills, Joe gives a scattered overview of the games, and take a moment to laugh about cringeworthy presidential announcements. Join us as we explore what could have been a hit film series, where nothing is real and everything is permitted (as long as its PG-13, I guess). CW: Brief mention of the alleged sexual misconduct and misogynist culture within Ubisoft, violence, Christopher Columbus, a reminder that the Uwe Boll adaptation of Bloodrayne exists.
