EPISODE 137 -  “THE BIG SCREEN ‘I DO': WEDDINGS IN CLASSIC CINEMA” - 4/27/2026  Weddings in classic films aren't just about romance—they're about timing, tension, and sometimes total chaos. Join us as we step into a world of whirlwind courtships, last-minute doubts, and grand gestures that don't always go according to plan. From glamorous, music-filled celebrations to sharp, fast-talking battles of love versus ambition, these stories remind us that the walk down the aisle is rarely simple—and often unforgettable. Along the way, we'll meet couples who fall in love against the odds, relationships that thrive on wit and conflict, and ceremonies that might just spiral into something completely unexpected. Because in classic cinema, a wedding isn't just an ending—it can be a twist, a turning point, or even a full-on rebellion. So grab your bouquet—real or imaginary—and join us as we explore some of the most iconic, surprising, and delightfully complicated trips to the altar ever put on film. James L. Brooks (Ella McCay, The Simpsons, Taxi) is an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award-winning screenwriter, director, and producer. James joins the Armchair Expert to discuss being an industrious high school reporter interviewing Louis Armstrong and Anne Bancroft, his lucky break as a studio page bringing Edward R. Murrow coffee, and co-creating the Mary Tyler Moore Show with Alan Burns. James and Dax talk about why there's no better job in the world than on a television show that's working, seeing Andy Kaufman perform as the vile Tony Clifton for the first time, and that he thinks you go legally insane when directing. James explains what it was like giving notes to Jack Nicholson, starting The Simpsons which is still the longest-running scripted show in history, and what makes a contemporary female heroine in his new screwball comedy Ella McCay.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. The story of a recent college grad and an affair that shapes the transitional years into his adulthood and his lover's middle age. As iconic as a movie can be, Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft starred in a movie that's as relevant now as it was in the aftermath of the Hays Code and on the cusp of a new style of filmmaking that would define a generation of artists. Clint, Cal and Nick talk about revisiting this classic in their own moments of change, how an old school cinematographer was the best way to break new ground and why the movie hits WAY different when you realize you're older than Mrs. Robinson. The 10% Rule: Why a Little More Vulnerability Can Change Everything With Will Greenblatt

Why is it terrifying to present to just four people? According to Will Greenblatt, it's because our brains still think the tribe might "club us over the head" if they don't like what we say. Will's journey from Canadian child actor (yes, a self-proclaimed "nepo baby") to sought-after corporate speaking coach is anything but typical. After working with Anne Bancroft as a kid and nearly getting swept up in the Hollywood machine, a family tragedy and toxic theater school experience led him to completely reinvent himself. But here's what makes this episode essential listening: Will discovered that the same skills that make great actors also create breakthrough leaders. The difference? It's not about performing—it's about finding emotional truth and connecting authentically with your audience. The game-changing insight: When Will's clients embrace just 10% more vulnerability in meetings, they see measurable career improvements—better performance reviews, more influence, and stronger professional relationships. Because while everyone else is playing it safe, that small dose of authenticity makes you unforgettable. We dive deep into why mentorship is broken in today's workplace, how to spot genuine people in interviews, and Will's three-act framework for storytelling that builds instant trust. Plus, he shares the uncomfortable truth about why taking career risks, like leaving acting or corporate, might be the safest move you can make.“You give somebody the opportunity to destroy you, and you hope that they won't, and they might. But you can't love without that risk. And it's the same kind of thing when you tell your boss what you really think.” ~ Will GreenblattIn This Episode:-The real difference between performing and authentic communication-Why our fear of public speaking is literally prehistoric -The 10% vulnerability rule that transforms careers -How to build trust through authentic storytelling -Will's childhood-to-adult-choice framework for connection -Why the "speaker-writer-coach-creator" career is the future -How to network without being transactional And much more!Resources:-Free Guide to LinkedIn Job Hunting for the 40+ Crew - https://www.itgetslateearly.com/job-guide-Supercharge Your Speaking Skills by Will Greenblatt - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2esQpzqZUUYD8Nxp9lKe05K1aYMpsNwUConnect with Will Greenblatt:-LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/willgreenblatt/-Website: https://www.skool.com/speakingheroes/aboutConnect with Maureen Clough:-LinkedIn: maureenwclough - https://www.linkedin.com/in/maureenwclough/-Website: itgetslateearly.com - https://www.itgetslateearly.com/-Instagram:

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we're sinking into the beautifully awkward and emotionally layered world of The Graduate (1967), a landmark in American cinema that captured the confusion and alienation of a generation—and still resonates today.Directed by Mike Nichols and based on Charles Webb's novel, The Graduate stars a breakout Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate adrift in a sea of expectations, ennui, and passive-aggressive dinner parties. Returning home to California, Ben finds himself stuck in a well-off suburban limbo, unsure of what to do with his future and utterly disconnected from the adults around him.Enter Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), the wife of his father's business partner and one of the most iconic seductresses in film history. Their affair is sultry, weirdly funny, and shot through with a tragic edge that gives the film its unique tone—equal parts satire, drama, and coming-of-age fable. Complications multiply when Ben falls for Mrs. Robinson's daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross), throwing everyone's lives into romantic chaos and sparking a messy, impulsive pursuit that culminates in one of the most famous closing shots in cinema history.Visually, The Graduate is striking—Nichols' inventive use of framing, reflections, and slow dissolves elevates the emotional subtext, and Simon & Garfunkel's folk-heavy soundtrack ("The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson") lingers in your head long after the credits roll. The music doesn't just underscore the scenes—it becomes a character in itself, echoing Benjamin's alienation and longing. But what really makes The Graduate endure is its tonal complexity. It's satirical, yes, but also melancholic. Benjamin isn't a traditional hero; he's self-absorbed, indecisive, and often unlikeable. Yet in that uncertainty lies the film's power—it taps into that restless moment between adolescence and adulthood where everything feels hollow, and rebellion can look like love, lust, or simply running away.Is the ending romantic or despairing? Is Benjamin a rebel or just another aimless rich kid? The Graduate leaves space for interpretation, and that ambiguity is what keeps it feeling alive, even decades later. So whether you're watching for the sharp dialogue, the iconic performances, or just to see Dustin Hoffman awkwardly floating in a pool of existential dread—this one's a classic for a reason.

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. EPISODE 61 - “FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1960s” - 11/11/2024 The decade of the 1960s was an exciting time in filmmaking. The stodgy studio contract system was starting to give way to a new crop of independent cinematic auteurs, often associated with the "New Hollywood" era, include: Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Peter Bogdanovich. These films were edgier and pushed the creative boundaries and social themes to reflect the changing times. In this episode, Steve and Nan discuss some of their favorite films of the decade and why they had such an impact!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Some Like It Cool (2002), by Michael Freehand; Mike Nichols: A Life (2021), by Mark Harris; Jean Simmons: Her Life and Career (2022), by Michelangelo Capua; “Veronica Cartwright talks about ‘The Birds',” February 8, 2008, YouTube; “Here's to You, Mr. Nichols: The Making of ‘The Graduate',” February 25, 2008, by Sam Kashner, Vanity Fair; “Tippi Hedren On Alfred Hitchcock's ‘The Birds',” April 29, 2009, The American FIlm Institute; “The Revenge of Alfred Hitchcock's Muse,” October 5, 2012, New York Magazine; “Tippi Hedren: Hitchcock Ruined My Career,” December 7, 2012, Huffington Post; “Throwback Thursday: Shirley MacLaine Recalls Filming Lesbian Drama ‘Children's Hour' in 1961,” June 4, 2015, Hollywood Reporter;  “The Underappreciated Genius of ‘Planet of the Apes',” May 18, 2024, by Janelle Bouie, New York Times; “The Children's Hour,” October 16, 2024, Episode 257, Feminist Frequency Podcast; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Graduate (1967), starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Elizabeth Wilson, Murray Hamilton, Buck Henry, Marion Lorne, Alice Ghostly, Brian Avery, William Brooke, and Norman Fell; The Birds (1963), Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright, Ethel Griffies, Charles McGraw, Richard Deacon, and Elizabeth Wilson; Days of Wine and Roses (1962), starring Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford, Jack Klugman, Alan Hewitt, Maxine Stuart, Debbie Megowan, and Jack Albertson; Planet of the Apes (1968), starring Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowell, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, James Whitmore, and James Daly; The Happy Ending (1969), starring Jean Simmons, John Forsyth, Shirley Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Teresa Wright, Bobby Darin, Kathy Fields, Dick Shawn, Nanette Fabray, and Tina Louise; The Children's Hour (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, James Garner, Miriam Hopkins, Faye Bainter, Karen Balkin, Veronica Cartwright, and Hope Summers; In The Heat Of the Night (1967), starring Rod Steiger, Sidney Poitier, Lee Grant, Warren Oats, Beah Richards, William Schallert, and Larry Gates; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. You may know William Atherton from Day Of The Locust, The Hindenburg, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, and Real Genius or you may better remember him for vigorously questioning the environmental safety of ghost busting or for receiving a blow to the face which rings in a very Merry Christmas in Die Hard.  Bill began his career on the stage, performing in Broadway plays by David Rabe, John Guare and Arthur Miller. The Ghostbuster and Die Hard franchises brought him to Hollywood and he joins us to discuss his fascinating history, his heroes and influences and his range of experiences with such performers as Anne Bancroft, George C. Scott, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, and Diane Keaton. Did you know that Bill sings What'll I Do in Nelson Riddle's Great Gatsby score!? He tells us all about it and talks about recognizing the greatness of Stephen Spielberg even as a baby director when Bill stared in Sugarland Express. He remembers how Anne Bancroft would not stop talking about Mel Brooks on the set of The Hindenburg, he shares what he learned from the casts of Lost and Desperate Housewives and he addresses the internet's most time-honored question, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Will & Harper and Nobody Wants This on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:William AthertonWilliam Atherton on WikiWilliam Atherton on IMDBGift of DemocracyMedia Path PodcastNobody Wants This on NetflixWill and Harper - Netflix
