CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. Scott!  My husband knows a lot about films but not much about airships (although he helps me produce these podcasts, so you'd imagine that by osmosis some knowledge has crept through). After a few drinks, we go back over the story scene-by-scene, discussing the characters, the story, the effects and the recreation of the airship itself. At the end, we discuss the film as a whole and our thoughts on it. Let me know if you agree or disagree with our opinions... This episode contains spoilers from the very beginning!! Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Well it's that time of year again, no we aren't talking about post general election hangover, we are referring to that annual culinary and quintessentially American Bacchanalia where we stuff ourselves to the gills with too many carbs, too much gravy, and bad football (the American variety).Yes kids, it's Thanksgiving. This little tale written by Chris Radant, and brought to the screen by Jodie Foster as her second work as director, is one of two films we'll cover in November that are Turkey Day-centric. Featuring lovely performances by an ensemble cast:Charles Durning, legendary Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin —with great supporting performances by Steve Guttenberg, and at the time, somewhat “new faces” Dylan McDermott and David Strathairn. The film is a great amuse-bouche to prepare our listeners for the unavoidable annoyances, absurdities, and grievances served alongside the turkey. While we can't always pick our family, we can certainly choose how, and to what extent we get sucked up into the madness at the dinner table. Take what dishes appeal to you (feed the rest to the dog). Sam and I offer our strategies for survival at the end of the episode, or as the saying goes in the film,“just float” —and don't forget to pass the gravy.

EPISODE 61 - “FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1960s” - 11/11/2024 The decade of the 1960s was an exciting time in filmmaking. The stodgy studio contract system was starting to give way to a new crop of independent cinematic auteurs, often associated with the "New Hollywood" era, include: Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Peter Bogdanovich. These films were edgier and pushed the creative boundaries and social themes to reflect the changing times. In this episode, Steve and Nan discuss some of their favorite films of the decade and why they had such an impact!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Some Like It Cool (2002), by Michael Freehand; Mike Nichols: A Life (2021), by Mark Harris; Jean Simmons: Her Life and Career (2022), by Michelangelo Capua; “Veronica Cartwright talks about ‘The Birds',” February 8, 2008, YouTube; “Here's to You, Mr. Nichols: The Making of ‘The Graduate',” February 25, 2008, by Sam Kashner, Vanity Fair; “Tippi Hedren On Alfred Hitchcock's ‘The Birds',” April 29, 2009, The American FIlm Institute; “The Revenge of Alfred Hitchcock's Muse,” October 5, 2012, New York Magazine; “Tippi Hedren: Hitchcock Ruined My Career,” December 7, 2012, Huffington Post; “Throwback Thursday: Shirley MacLaine Recalls Filming Lesbian Drama ‘Children's Hour' in 1961,” June 4, 2015, Hollywood Reporter;  “The Underappreciated Genius of ‘Planet of the Apes',” May 18, 2024, by Janelle Bouie, New York Times; “The Children's Hour,” October 16, 2024, Episode 257, Feminist Frequency Podcast; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Graduate (1967), starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Elizabeth Wilson, Murray Hamilton, Buck Henry, Marion Lorne, Alice Ghostly, Brian Avery, William Brooke, and Norman Fell; The Birds (1963), Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright, Ethel Griffies, Charles McGraw, Richard Deacon, and Elizabeth Wilson; Days of Wine and Roses (1962), starring Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford, Jack Klugman, Alan Hewitt, Maxine Stuart, Debbie Megowan, and Jack Albertson; Planet of the Apes (1968), starring Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowell, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, James Whitmore, and James Daly; The Happy Ending (1969), starring Jean Simmons, John Forsyth, Shirley Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Teresa Wright, Bobby Darin, Kathy Fields, Dick Shawn, Nanette Fabray, and Tina Louise; The Children's Hour (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, James Garner, Miriam Hopkins, Faye Bainter, Karen Balkin, Veronica Cartwright, and Hope Summers; In The Heat Of the Night (1967), starring Rod Steiger, Sidney Poitier, Lee Grant, Warren Oats, Beah Richards, William Schallert, and Larry Gates; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Kerry and Collin are joined by Cinema Femme's founder Rebecca Martin Fagerholm to talk about Jodie Foster's ensemble comedy "Home For The Holidays," starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey, Jr., Anne Bancroft, Charles Durning, Cynthia Stevenson, Dylan McDermott, Geraldine Chaplin and Steve Guttenberg (wow!). Of all the holiday movies in the Family-Gathers-Together-For-The-Holidays sub-genre, this one gets it so, so right above many others. Why does Collin hold it in such high regard? How did Downey's behavior and antics effect the overall outcome of the film? How much food was cooked for the Thanksgiving scene and what happened to all of it. All this, plus Collin talks about the latest and greatest in physical media for the Blu-ray Gift Exchange.  Blu-ray movies covered: Sony: "American Movie" 4K (1999) Warner Bros: "The Hitcher" 4K (1986) Criterion: "Pandora's Box" (1929) "Demon Pond" (1979) Val Lewton Double Feature: "I Walked With A Zombie" and "The Seventh Victim" (1943) Warner Archive: "The Prairie Home Companion" (2006) "Bathing Beauty" (1944) "Journey Into Fear" (1943) Universal: "Touch" (2024)

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. In this episode, we dive into Venom: The Last Dance, directed by Kelly Marcel and starring Tom Hardy. Eddie Brock and Venom are back with a choice that could change everything as they're pursued by a relentless military figure and alien monsters from Venom's home planet. Will the duo survive, and what sacrifices must they make along the way? We also review Conclave, a taut thriller directed by Edward Berger and starring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, and Stanley Tucci. This film brings audiences into the Vatican's hidden corridors as Cardinal Lawrence unearths secrets that threaten the very core of the Catholic Church during a papal election. Next up is Your Monster, directed by Caroline Lindy and starring Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey. This unique horror-comedy follows Laura Franco, an actress rediscovering her strength after meeting a strange, charismatic monster living in her closet. For our classic pick, we revisit Agnes of God (1985). Directed by Norman Jewison and starring Jane Fonda, Meg Tilly, and Anne Bancroft, this tense drama pits science and faith against each other in a mystery involving a young nun's shocking secrets. You may know William Atherton from Day Of The Locust, The Hindenburg, Looking For Mr. Goodbar, and Real Genius or you may better remember him for vigorously questioning the environmental safety of ghost busting or for receiving a blow to the face which rings in a very Merry Christmas in Die Hard.  Bill began his career on the stage, performing in Broadway plays by David Rabe, John Guare and Arthur Miller. The Ghostbuster and Die Hard franchises brought him to Hollywood and he joins us to discuss his fascinating history, his heroes and influences and his range of experiences with such performers as Anne Bancroft, George C. Scott, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, and Diane Keaton. Did you know that Bill sings What'll I Do in Nelson Riddle's Great Gatsby score!? He tells us all about it and talks about recognizing the greatness of Stephen Spielberg even as a baby director when Bill stared in Sugarland Express. He remembers how Anne Bancroft would not stop talking about Mel Brooks on the set of The Hindenburg, he shares what he learned from the casts of Lost and Desperate Housewives and he addresses the internet's most time-honored question, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Will & Harper and Nobody Wants This on Netflix.Path Points of Interest:William AthertonWilliam Atherton on WikiWilliam Atherton on IMDBGift of DemocracyMedia Path PodcastNobody Wants This on NetflixWill and Harper - Netflix

Hi friends, today we showcase -Turning Point 1977-
Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft star here, with some big help from rad defector Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tom Skerritt, Martha Scott Marshall Thompson, and James Mitchell too.
The mad scientist that makes evil robot Kiss members in Kiss meets the Phantom of the park pops in for a bit, dressed like Tom Skerritt's character, and it got confusing for a hot second. I think it was to show that Shirley's Character had a type, but it was nice to see the Kiss guy.
Director here is Herbert Ross, naming a few we got, Boys on the side, steel Magnolias, Footloose, max Dugan Returns, and for us it's The goodbye girl, the Seven percent solution, the sunshine boys, the Last of Shelia, T.R. Baskin, and the Owl and the pussycat 1970, We will be showcasing him again with the Sunshine Boys 1975.
Our writer here is Arthur Laurents, who is absolutely amazing, and wrote quite a lot of tell all stories about his life in Hollywood. He wrote it all after he came out of the closet so it gets deep and a lil hot too. Arthur was a gay Jewish, once blacklisted writer, so it was too much to be contained in just 1 book.He was born in 1917-and lived for 93 years. He wrote the coded Rope 1948, Home of the brave, West side story, Gypsy, and we reviewed him before in 1973's The Way we were.
Quite happy to showcase this film for y'all, it's been a minute since we have showcased something. Lots to say soooooooo, why not press play. Fun sentence to write, but I'm sure many of us read while listening, whatever your process, thanks for listening.

Our exit today has us focusing on two romantic comedies that are centered on either coast over several years where friends from childhood discover their love for each other. First, there is Keeping the Faith, written by Stuart Blumberg and directed by Edward Norton. The film centers on a love triangle between a rabbi, a priest and their childhood best friend. Next, we will talk about Boys and Girls, written by The Drews and directed by Robert Iscove. That film stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Claire Forlani as two college kids who have a will they/won't they relationship over the course of over a decade. Along the way, Tripp and Ross talk about their own religious upbringings and college experiences, along with The Blair Witch Project, wasted legends of the screen, whether Anne Bancroft's filmography is "cool enough," the rise of Edward Norton, and Ross still won't let go of last week's American Psycho discussion! "Love is sweet, have a treat." This was the verse written on the wedding favours, pairs of homemade shortbread cookies by all our plates at a recent wedding we attended in the family and our third host, Barry, he made it into the photos and is back with us, for another mixed bag show, to share about the experience. A wedding day or living with a disability, so many things in life are about learning to roll with it. We three share on Outlook this week about being blind in such a crowded, hectic social situation and how we already have some authority, being unable to see, when an unexpected part of the evening was when the power went out and all the guests were forced to find their way in the toilets in the dark. We also discuss the tiresome infantilization of us by uneducated sighted people, including those running carnival rides, as Barry and Kerry once more discovered at a May 24 traveling amusement park when they were forbidden from going on a ride together on their own as a couple. When do you speak up and advocate and when do you let it slide? And in our second half, we revisit the early years of the life of Helen Keller along with Barry who knew very little about Keller's life. Brian and Kerry rewatched the 1962 film version of the meeting of Helen and her teacher and companion Anne Sullivan, while Barry experienced the story for the first time. We and he give our thoughts on the title "The Miracle Worker" and its problematic connotations, about how films based on true events sometimes embellish and alter their true life timelines, and Barry gives his take as an Irishman on how well Anne Bancroft did with the accent her character would have had. If you're like Barry and never really knew much about Helen Keller or her teacher, or even for a reminder of the lives the two lived beyond that one big, important year on which the movie was made, check out the Outlook episode we once put out on the full life of Helen Keller and stay tuned for a similar show on a fuller picture of Anne Sullivan's life story still to come. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2021-12-13-lights-camera-helen-keller/id1527876739?i=1000545091341

Seven more movie reviews, let's go! Gee this is simply not the best batch. I said it.
Today we start with (The Feminist and the Fuzz 1971) Barbara Eden stars with the good Morning America guy in this wacky film with some serious ideas that they bring into America's living room, giving us the representation, and radical crumb many were literally dying for, but you just, as always knew they were gonna mainstream a few steps back at the end, the price that you knew you were gonna pay. I remember that made for TV movie, the day my kid went punk, that came out just as me and three other 16 year olds started the first ever punk band in our suburban catholic town, boy was that film a let down. I'd personally say that it's worth a watch. It's on you tube, watch it then pop back and listen hmmmmmmm, maybe.
Next is (Elvis on tour 1972). It looks and sounds cool. There is just a lot of Elvis music here, and I could use more interviews. Also I'm sure that the filmmakers must of felt quite bound and gagged about really reporting what the saw and heard, at least in my head cannon it seems that way. The famous rock story of Elvis getting denied his prescription at a pharmacy on the road because a sympathetic pharmacist saw the massive addiction of Elvis to pills, and Elvis's manager simply buying the pharmacy, is NOT here, how could it be. But I am sure it was all seen. Even with the puff piece attitude of this publicity thing you can see it pretty dang well.
Next today we move on to (Snoopy come home 1972) This is the first of the trilogy of Charlie Brown feature films that were going to be covering for the pod, and the second in the film series after 1969's A boy named Charlie Brown. Look this is great and our discussion is fabulous I'm sure, I've seen this movie several times in my life SO it's more than ok that I fell asleep this time. Those other two lovelies can pick up my slack. There's dog and bird discrimination for Snoopy and Woodstock as they travel to visit a sick friend.
Next is (Charlie Varrick 1973) and Garak from deep space 9 is here. Garak plays Harman Sullivan, a hot head bank robber who like Veruka Salt, wants it all now. We also gots Joe don Baker, Felicia Farr, and the coach of the bad news bears himself Walter Matthau. Lots of great characters here to including the dean from Animal House, in this gritty great stock 70's movie where, uh oh the bank robbers ripped off the mob. Whatever will they do? Let's talk talk talk about it shall we.
Onward to (3 days of the Condor) Nows here's a popular 70's political thriller that your decade under the influence would love to time machine change a bit of. I love Robert Redford, he's cute, thoughtful and chooses rad projects, even now. See (The company you keep 2012) where he plays a former Weather Underground activist. But here in Condor he makes this icky decision to not just hand the amazing force of Faye Dunaway the dang gun after they get to her pad. Just pisses me off ok. Great directing and cinematography here. Would you like to know more.
(The Hindenburg 1975) is up to bat now and let's just say that for me….George C Scott does NOT George C Scott enough, and the super cool Anne Bancroft is very under used, watch Turning point and Garbo speaks to compensate. The dick from Real Genius and Ghostbusters is good here, and I don't hate this, wait, the amazing director Robert Wise is also under represented here. ACK,,,,,,,, moving on finally to wrap this poop up with (Across the great divide 1976) Hey this is the one with the 2 kids, I dig this one. We reviewed the Sea Gypsies with Robert Logan a bit ago, and I was very surprised that he was in about 6 nature movies in the 70's. What is going on world. This one is waaaaay better than what's to come in my opinion.
Ok I'm done, thank you very much for listening, please subscribe and give us some stars, and mayhems a sweet or not sweet review, it super helps, thanks.

We're staying in the 60s this week and with Patty Duke, but instead of sparkling as Neely O'Hara she's learning to fold her napkin and beating the crap out of Annie Sullivan in “The Miracle Worker”! Duke and Anne Bancroft deservedly both won Oscars in this portrayal of Helen Keller's arduous journey to learn not only how to read and speak but the concept of words and letters. And also discipline and table manners, much to the dismay of her coddling mother Kate (best supporting Inga Swenson) and Aubrey List inductee Captain Keller, which gives us the iconic 10 minute breakfast scene. We discuss the parallels with parenting children with special needs, and of course our own irrelevant experience as pet parents, we turn a corner on Helen Keller jokes and are inspired to channel our own inner Annie's.
