Since May 10th 1987, Vancouver's Rogue Folk Club has been presenting over 50 concerts per year of Celtic, Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, Manouche, Cajun, and World Roots Music. Today, on the Society's 38th Anniversary, I indulged in a hefty slice of nostalgia with music by some of the amazing - and diverse - performers who have graced The Rogue stage down the years. Also some new releases, concert previews and a sad R.I.P. to Newfoundland singer and accordion wizard Mark Hiscock, of Shanneyganook, who died this week.
Labour Day special with some labour anthems in the second half. New releases and Rogue Folk Club concert previews abound. We kick off the Fall Season with two brilliant young BC fiddlers: Jocelyn Pettit and Olivia Barrett joined by top guitarist Adam Dobres next Friday September 6th. Kristina Olsen and The Faux Paws come in the following week, and David Francey is joined by Terra Spencer the week after that. Kym Gouchie, Miscellany of Folk, Old Man Luedecke to follow. Heaps more reasons to be cheerful after that!
I say a fond farewell to French pop star Françoise Hardy, who died this week at age 80. She was such a beautiful woman and was one of the main cover girls in Europe in the early 1960s. It's also Bloomsday on Sunday, so I've added a couple of Joycean references. Also featured new music from the July issue of Songlines magazine, and there were a load of new releases from all over the world on top of that. I added as many as possible! Also concert previews (Teddy Thompson on Sunday at The Rogue Folk Club, Missy Raines on Monday at the Anza Club, plus festival previews and a few tracks from Shooglenifty, too.) Oh, and a couple of tunes from Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, who performs in Coquitlam today at Scotfest.
Music from Justin Adams and Mauro Durante (who play the Blueshore Financial stage at Capilano University next Wednesday), Aleksi Campagne (playing at the Rogue Folk Club on Sunday March 3rd), Sinéad X Sanders and Pat Chessell (paying tribute to Shane MacGowan on March 2nd at The Rogue) and lots more! Including new music from Les Amazones d'Afrique, Sarah Jarosz, members of Le Vent Du Nord, and American Patchwork Quartet. More songs for Black History Month, and plenty of tracks which have inspired me this past week or so.
Jocelyn Pettit is a violinist and vocalist who released her third solo album, Wind Rose, on June 3rd, 2022. She also released an album called All It Brings with Ellen Gira, who is an American cellist, on July 9th. Jocelyn and Ellen presented a double album release concert at the Rogue Folk Club in Vancouver on July 19, 2022. Thank you to Pearson Instruments for sponsoring this episode. Some ribald ditties for what makes May so ... ahem ... merry! Plus it's Rogue Anniversary Night, with a unique band making their Rogue Folk Club debut - Diyet & The Love Soldiers from Yukon. So a few songs from the amazing Tutchone singer songwriter and her acoustic folk / bluegrass trio, starring Bob Hamilton, legendary steel guitar player, record producer, and all round string wizard. Also some new releases, sets of world music grooves, blues, and singer songwriters, and Canadian and Scottish Celtic trad. Plus some music from performers who will play the Summer festivals, and a smattering of performers who have graced The Rogue stage over the past 35 years or so.
More highlights from 34 years of the Rogue Folk Club, plus some tasty new releases from around the world, a heartfelt and sometimes painful tribute to the 215 lost souls of Kamloops, and some exhilarating fiddle music to wrap things up!
Some new music from Songlines Magazine, English reggae roots combo EII, and Canadians Alex Cuba, and Allison Russell. Plus more trips down memory lane with performers who have graced the Rogue Folk Club stage over the past 34 years.
Playing more songs from artists who have performed at The Rogue Folk Club at some point over the past 34 years. Music from Africa, Cuba, India, China, Louisiana, Mississippi, Cape Breton, Eire, Scotland, Quebec, and B.C. and beyond. I suspect Part 3 will occupy some or all of next week's show as well! Great memories and amazing music. I hope concerts can start up again soon ....

Greetings from the beautiful foggy-and-then-sunny West Coast! Tonight I was happy to feature a locally produced answer to those Starbucks compilations: East Van Special Blend. 18 eclectic tracks including, of course, some folksy-rootsy stuff. I forgot to mention on air that a CD release party will be held Jan. 30 at Chapel Arts.At 8:30 I did a phone interview with Lindsay May, who did a live session on this show in late 2012. Nice to catch up with her and chat about her new CD. That release party will be Jan. 25 at the Rogue Folk Club.Happy birthday to my mom Jan. 23! Although I doubt she'll ever figure out podcasts to hear the song I sent out, I love her all the same.Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks, as always, for listening!val folkoasis@gmail.com

Thanks to CiTR's Saturday morning dj, Steve Edge, for filling in while I was in transit home from Las Vegas. I would have been getting a luggage search and questioning at the border (grr) right around the time this show started at 8pm. Steve did his best to continue the eclectic vibe of this show - lots of plugs for upcoming Rogue Folk Club shows.I'll be back live next week with 2 more kumbaya-free hours!cheers, valfolkoasis@gmail.com
Tonight's live session was with Vancouver's Christa Couture, who has a CD release party Sept. 6 at the Rogue Folk Club. We enjoyed delightful conversation and a couple of live songs. Sharing the bill Sept. 6 will be SONiA (of Disappear Fear) - we did a live phone interview with her at the top of the show.Enjoy the Labour Day weekend and play safe!See you in September...val folkoasis@gmail.comk
Kia ora! Still somewhat in a New Zealand state of mind, so I played a track from Wellington band Fat Freddy's Drop and shared some commentary on Vancouver from Air New Zealand's in-flight magazine. Did you know one can spot "bald eagles, elks (sic) and otters" around the waterfront here? ("if you are lucky") Hee hee. Two interviews tonight: first with local folk artist Keith William Miller about his upcoming ep release. Second was with CiTR's own Steve Edge, on the occasion of the Rogue Folk Club's 25th anniversary. Some great stories from Steve! Thanks again for your support, and keep in touch!val folkoasis@gmail.com
Apologies for the lack of podcast last week, we were pre-empted with fairly short notice. In any case, we're back this week with more new roots music releases, and two interviews. We chatted with Johanne Dumas regarding this weekend's magnifique Festival du Bois, and then to Mae Moore about her Rogue Folk Club show on Saturday.Take care all, and thanks so much for listening!cheers, valfolkoasis@gmail.com
