I'm delighted to have Phillip-Michael Scales on the show this week!!  Phillip-Michael is a uniquely talented songwriter, singer, and showman with a special knack for storytelling, an infectiously charismatic onstage vibe and a hardcore work ethic that has kept him happily pursuing his muse along his long road to success.Even more exciting, Phillip-Michael has a super new album on the horizon, entitled Good To Be Here, due out on April 25, produced by Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive, Allison Russell, Bahamas). Recorded live with a full band of noted Nashville players, this album marks an exciting new stage in Phillip-Michael's creative life.Phillip-Michael and I talk about everything from his European sojourns, to growing up in Detroit with roles in musical theatre as a young kid. For the series finale, we go back to the Fort. Join us as we bring you the sights and sounds we experienced at Fort Adams as Newport Folk returned after a necessary break in 2020, and presented their six-day, half capacity 2021 festival, Folk On. We'll take you from the meaningful first notes sung by the first performers to grace the stage, Resistance Revival Chorus, to one of the last - Lake Street Dive, and their tribute to beloved member of the folk family and former WFUV Program Director, the late Rita Houston. We also hear from Andrew Bird and Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor about their return to performing and paying homage to John Prine, from mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile about the magic of Newport and why it continues to gives him hope, and the kismet journey of Allison Russell organizing and performing during the most talked about set at Folk On, Sunday night's 'Once and Future Sounds', curated by, and featuring women of color, with a very very special guest. We also check in with Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Yola, Newport Executive Director Jay Sweet, and many other artists, fans and members of the Folk family about their experiences at Folk On, their reflections of the past 18 months, and where we are headed. Through it all, the feeling of family and community is ever present, giving us the courage to take tentative steps forward, leaning into the truth and power of music, and the magic that happens when we dream together. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. We're hearing a lot about diversity and inclusion these days (which is great!) but as we'll learn in this episode, those two words and what they stand for are at the very core of what guided the earliest days of Newport Folk and Jazz over sixty years ago, continuing to this day. And as we know, there is still much work to be done to make our world a just and equal place. Listen in as the women of Our Native Daughters share the experience of their powerful performance at Newport in 2019, their mission of amplifying the perspectives of Black American women from the time of slavery through the present, and discuss the ongoing need for better representation across genres - in particular Americana and Country - that have their roots in the black community, and at events like Newport Folk. Amplifying women's voices, and women of color, is an important part of this conversation, too, and Yola speaks on the importance of The Highwomen's debut at Newport Folk and Brandi Carlile's all female headlining set, as well as her own sense of purpose in occupying and owning space in what is currently an overwhelmingly white genre. We dive into the history of Newport and why the insistence racial equality and diversity of its lineups was an especially personal mission of George Wein's - one that he carried to New Orleans when creating Jazz Fest alongside the parents of Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe. and how that festival in turn helped to integrate New Orleans. And Colin Meloy and Judy Collins join us to talk about folk music's history as a tool for organizing and empowering the disenfranchised, especially through the voice of Pete Seeger. The fight continues to surround hate and force it to surrender. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. The penultimate episode of the Road To Joni series packs in more conversations than any episode so far. As host Carmel Holt heads east toward home and the finale of the series on Joni's 81st birthday, the throughline of “Both Sides Now” continues on with four artists whose creative path would have been very different if not for Joni Mitchell. Sylvan Esso's Amelia Meath was introduced to Joni's music at the age of 12 by her dad. They listened in the car on cassette until she knew the songs by heart. Amelia cites Joni's freedom with her voice and her ability to talk openly about the challenges of living inside the music industry as core inspiration for her own creative journey. She tells Carmel that she thinks that the celebration of Joni should go on forever. Multi-grammy award winning and nominated singer, songwriter and Tony award winning playwright and author Anäis Mitchell says that Joni is in the DNA of what she does as an artist. She talks about the impact of Hejira and the powerful example it set for her to witness a woman genius (Joni) doing it on her own terms. Anäis shares that she can relate deeply to the duality of “Both Sides Now” - how revisiting something in her 40s that was written in her 20s can mean something totally different. Next we hear from Allison Russell about how her “Once & Future Sounds” set at the reemergence of Newport in 2021 came about, and how it led her to being on stage with Joni Mitchell the following year, as well as The Gorge in 2023, and most recently, at the Hollywood Bowl. She pinpoints hearing the clarinet in “For Free” for the first time as a pivotal moment that led her to playing clarinet with Joni as part of the Joni Jam. Our final conversation in Episode 9 is with Grammy nominated Irish singer, songwriter, multi- instrumentalist Andrew Hozier Byrne, aka Hozier. He talks about how Joni's music cracks open the hearts of anyone who listens to it… and we can attest that in this episode, even stories about Joni's music will crack some hearts open. Andrew tells Carmel about a meeting with Brandi Carlile in LA that led him to Joni's living room as part of an early Joni Jam. He emotionally tells the story of how Herbie Hancock started playing “Summertime” and Joni started singing along. He says about Joni, “It's like being in the presence of something mythical.”

Believe it or not, Rhiannon Giddens isn't the only black banjo player turning heads in Americana Music. Kaia Kater's first album in six years is out and the likes of Rolling Stone, No Depression and more are giving it glowing marks.  She's not just turning out a unique sound and a very different take on how the banjo plays into new music, but Kater is also chiming in on representation of people of color in bluegrass, country and Americana music. This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) dig in with her to talk about that, her background growing up in Canada, the culture shock of going to college in West Virginia and collaborating with the likes of Allison Russell, Aoiefe O'Donovan and Taj Mahal on her new record and a lot more.  Falls also shares his experience at Railbird Festival in Lexington, Ky., in June, which included a new worship-like status of Marcus King. Spring is the prompt for today's episode, and boy did we pick some fantastic albums that will make you feel every emotion in the book. First we'll cover Allison Russell's 2023 album "The Returner." A vibrant, groovy album that will lift you out of the darkness so that you may dance in the light. We'll talk about how how sometimes the Grammy's get it right, how music can make you believe in magic, and how popular music today sometimes lacks the energy that Allison Russell brings in full force on this album. Then, we'll cover the debut mixtape from Chicago rapper Noname: "Telefone." It brings up a discussion on the idea of "mixtapes" in general, and how this project is crafted  with the skill of someone making a full blown album so early in her career. This mixtape takes you on an emotional journey of life and death while showcasing some incredible rapping on a project that Julius declares only gets better on future projects.Together these albums give you a masterclass on fleshing out a themed collection of songs. They highlight the importance of community and demonstrate the healing power of positivity and vulnerability. if you think I'm exaggerating with any of the statements, you haven't heard these records. Our first episode covering albums! First up, Julius gives Danny 2Pac's "All Eyez on Me." We'll talk about 2Pac's rough and rowdy ways that produced some of the biggest music of the 90's, both in terms of popularity and in sound. Being the first double album of rap, it is full of insane beats and collaborations with both legendary and underrated rappers. Julius also gets into how these sounds were always around during childhood and helped instill confidence in the face of bullies. Then, Danny gives Julius Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger." This album helped solidify Willie Nelson as one of country's biggest stars by finally carving his own path and creating his own sound. Danny discusses how this was the album that first  sparked his Willie obsession. We'll also cover what Nashville was like at the time of its release and the crucial role of Willie's "little" sister Bobbie.Put together, these albums evoke discussions on the depiction of violence in music, the power of having a musical family to collaborate with, and much much more.Songs featured in this episode:All About U - PurchaseCalifornia Love (Remix) - PurchaseGot My Mind Made Up - PurchaseTime of the Preacher - PurchaseDown Yonder (Live from Woodstock 99) - WatchHands on the Wheel - PurchaseJust As I Am - PurchaseComing Up:Bonus Mini EpisodeEp. 4: SpringNoname - "Telefone"Allison Russell - "The Returner"Ep. 5: Party Soundtracks (Albums that can soundtrack a party front to back)Azealia Banks - "Broke with Expensive Taste"The Mavericks - "In Time"Follow us: Instagram Twitter Tiktok We'd like to hear from you - send us an email: thegmspod at gmailLeave us a rating and review if you want to!Thanks for listening!

This week we dive into the many lives and evolving music of much-respected singer and troubadour Peter One. Coming from humble beginnings in his native Ivory Coast, One became a folk hero for creating a new type of African roots music that was the backdrop for Nelson Mandela's fight against apartheid and gained him a following around the globe.  His partnership with longtime friend Jess Sah Bi created the 1985 classic (and newly reissued) Our Garden Needs Its Flowers and at their height, saw them playing stadiums across West Africa. The two mates from Abidjan were equally inspired by Ivorian village songs as Simon and Garfunkel, Dolly Parton and American soul titans like Otis Redding - creating a unique fusion while singing in French, English and Gouro (a Mande language). Escaping the unrest of his home country where he was a history teacher, One finally came to the United States and worked as a nurse for years before diving back into his original passion for music.  At the age of 67, last year One put out his heralded return LP Come Back To Me on Verve Forecast, featuring the golden-voiced harmonies and Ivorian country-folk songs he does best, with new forays into blues, French love songs and more - featuring his old partner Jess Sah Bi and new collaborators like Allison Russell. Co-produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, John Prine) with contributions from members of Wilco and Calexico, the record shows that even as he nears seventy, One is only just getting started. Last year he even made his debut at the Grand Ole' Opry.

We also talk about the African American experience in North America, how that has shaped her own musical influences, and how the dynamics of “Survivor's Joy” has been a driving force in her life.
