Local clarinetist, wind synthesist and producer Sam Davidson joins Jasper in Studio A to perform and talk about his project Unrealistic Spaces. Sam is bringing Unrealistic Spaces to the Roy Barnett Recital Hall here on Campus on November 9th, 2025. You can read more and get your tickets below. Use the promo code "CITR" to get 50% off. Event Details ● Title: Unrealistic Spaces ● Date & Time: November 9th, 2pm ● Venue: Roy Barnett Recital Hall, UBC School of Music ● Tickets $25 ● https://unrealistic-spaces.eventbrite.ca Unrealistic Spaces places performers within unique 3D sound spaces layered with complex acoustics and ambiences that range from picture-perfect, immersive field recordings to completely artificial, hyper-real sonic environments. Eight venue-specific compositions merge the stark abstraction of musique concrète with colloquial elements of modern jazz, hip-hop, and minimalism. Each piece aims to explore a singular context for artists and listeners to inhabit, where the performers' reactions are as intrinsic to the music as the notes and rhythms themselves. In these pieces, immersive technology is used not as a sound enhancement tool, but as a means to carry expression across an invisible collage of sound. 3D audio is about approaching, matching, and moving beyond real-world listening. Sound is reproduced from all around the listener—in both the horizontal and vertical planes—to create an enveloping experience as possible. Musical and non-musical sound scenes can range from highly natural to completely fantastical. This program was composed specifically for 3D venues and has been realized over several months at the University of British Columbia's Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS), of which The Roy Barnett Recital Hall hosts a mirrored sound system.

The dark Moon on October 21 marks the darkest period in the Indian astrological year, though the literal darkest days of winter come later. In India, this time is celebrated as Diwali, the festival of lights. The Sun, Moon, and Venus are all in their signs of debilitation — the Sun in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio from October 24–26, and Venus in Virgo, making this a low point. Yet there's a blessing amid the darkness: Jupiter has just entered exaltation in Cancer, casting its uplifting influence toward the dark themes of Scorpio, as well as Saturn and Neptune in Pisces and Pluto in Capricorn. This suggests that, even in times of chaotic change (or because of them), we can better perceive the Divine. Jupiter in Cancer inspires faith, growth, and purpose born from having been lost in the world. The New Moon falls in Citrā nakshatra, meaning brilliant, symbolised by a shining jewel. Its bright star, Spica, reminds us that stars are only visible in the dark. Likewise, our own light often reveals itself through struggle. Citrā, ruled by the celestial architect, encourages us to refine our craft, master our skills, and share our creative gifts (Libra), to sometimes put aside our own needs for others.Though the weather ahead may appear gloomy, Mars and Mercury in Scorpio strengthen courage and determination, helping us dig deep and persevere. Remember: it's always darkest before the dawn.

Continuing the flashbacks from the past 4 decades of hosting this show I chose more old favourites to blend with some great new releases, as well as concert and festival previews. Had to whittle it down from the original 193 songs chosen, to a more manageable 52! Suffice to say, there have been more than a few good memories down these years at CiTR!

My first show at CiTR was on June 1st 1985. Today I continued my 40th Anniversary nostalgia with a bunch more of my fave songs from these past 4 decades, and threw in some tasty new titles as well. This was a very fun trip down memory lane for me, and I still managed to learn something new and exciting along the way. I hope the radio audience enjoyed it, too!
