Retired agent Kerri Reifel reviews her work with the Fort Wayne Police Department on the investigation into the murder of 8-year-old April Tinsley, who disappeared on April 1, 1988. Her body was found three days later. But the murder went unsolved for over thirty years. Kerri worked closely with Fort Wayne PD Detective Brian Martin and others on the case for 16 years, first as an agent assigned to the Indianapolis Division and member of the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team (CARD), and then as a certified profiler in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU-3) Crimes Against Children program. Through genetic DNA testing, John Miller was identified as the murderer. He pled guilty to murder and child molesting and was sentenced to 80 years. Kerri and another BAU colleague spent two days interviewing him in prison. Kerri Reifel served in the FBI for over 21 years. Stephen Colbert is finishing his run as a late night talk show host this week (tomorrow, to be exact). Before he took on this role, back in 2005 he was host of a political satire program called The Colbert Report, where he coined the term "truthiness." Truthiness is the belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the perceptions of some individuals, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectural examination, or fact.  While it was satire in 2005, I wonder how it plays out in our current times. I also talked today about learning. If learning = change, then if I haven't changed, I haven't learned. What might it be that prevents people from admitting they might not have had all the information when they formed an opinion? Something keeps us from changing our minds, which, then, points to our inability or unwillingness to change and grow. The 2025 summit, with a theme of “Seed to Spoon,” took place in mid-June earlier this year in the heart of Ohio's Amish country.Homesteaders, farmers, gardeners, educators, and healthy food advocates spent two days together participating in hands-on workshops, listening to keynote presentations, and networking with like-minded people.For many Americans, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of supply chains, including the food supply chain. The summit's focus was on learning how to grow, preserve, and prepare homegrown food.While at the summit, I spoke with organizer John Miller to learn about the philosophy behind this growing homesteading and self-sufficiency movement.
