This week, we are revisiting a favorite episode. We hope you enjoy going back with us.Psalm 139:3You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways."And art acquainted with all my ways - All the paths that I tread; the whole course of my life. All that I do, in all places and at all times, is fully known to thee."BarnesAs I reflected on the whole course of my life, I wanted to share the story of my second birthday, which happened when I was eighteen years old.I discovered this has been one of my most played and shared episodes and I am revisiting it here on my birthday week. It's become a yearly tradition. If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time gift, thank you!https://www.sherriyoungward.com/supportTo find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list at www.sherriyoungward.com

In this episode of Restauranttopia, Brian and Dave dig into one of the most overlooked — yet most powerful — tools in restaurant operations: employee appreciation. Customer appreciation gets plenty of attention, but retaining great staff requires consistent, genuine recognition. With hiring still competitive and turnover costly, this episode focuses on simple, legal, and meaningful ways restaurant owners and managers can show gratitude that actually sticks. No big budgets. No complicated programs. Just practical ideas you can implement immediately. What You'll Learn in This Episode • Why employee appreciation directly impacts retention Entry-level and frontline staff can find work quickly. Feeling valued is often the deciding factor in whether they stay. • "See something, say something" Recognize exceptional behavior in real time. Celebrating what you want repeated drives culture faster than any policy. • Public vs. private recognition From one-on-one praise to team shout-outs and recognition boards, learn how visibility can reinforce positive behaviors across the entire staff. • Take a walk (and talk) Getting out of the office and onto the floor builds trust, uncovers issues early, and creates real connection with your team. • The power of surprise Small, unexpected gestures — gift cards, quality swag, handwritten notes — often mean more than formal programs. • Remember the little things Birthdays, family milestones, tough personal moments — being human builds loyalty faster than bonuses alone. • Safety, parking, and working conditions matter Employee appreciation isn't just praise — it's making sure staff feel safe, supported, and respected every shift. • Handwritten notes as a leadership habit Brian shares how building thank-you notes into a weekly routine creates lasting impact with minimal effort. Key Takeaway Employee appreciation doesn't have to be expensive or complicated — it just has to be intentional and consistent. The little things done regularly can dramatically improve morale, culture, and retention. Hosts Brian Seitz & Dave Ross Restauranttopia — honest conversations to help independent restaurant owners operate smarter and stronger. It's Christmas Eve, and if you celebrate, Merry Christmas! In this episode of Pivot Ball Change, I'm sharing a cozy, behind-the-scenes chat that blends podcasting tips with real life, holiday traditions, and a little festive fun.In the first part of the episode, I break down the podcast hosting platform I recommend, where to find your podcast analytics, and why I'm asking for your feedback on this show so I can continue creating episodes that truly serve you. I also share simple lighting tips for podcast reels that I learned from one of our clients, a holiday podcasting strategy to reduce your workload during a busy season, and the recording platform I use and recommend to all of my clients. We also talk about what podcast editing tools can and can't do, why human editing still matters, and exactly how long your podcast intro should be and what it needs to include. Then I shift into real life outside of podcasting. I recap our son's sixth birthday party, what went well, how I created the invitations, where we found decorations, and where we chose the easy button. I also share two mantras that help calm my anxiety when hosting people in our home and talk about something I tried for the very first time that felt surprisingly freeing.I walk you through our Christmas Eve traditions, how my husband and I divide and conquer gift responsibilities for our boys, what we get each other for Christmas, and how we intentionally end the night so we can slow down, exhale, and remember what the season is really about. We wrap things up with the three F's: fashion, food, and fun. I share what I'm wearing for a fancy birthday dinner, a brand that's currently catching my eye, how I'm hosting my own birthday party and bringing new friends together, my favorite restaurant recommendation in Wisconsin Dells, WI, a party recipe that was a hit at our son's birthday, and the card game my family loves to play around the holidays. Jared is fired up in NYC for Ticked Off Tuesday, venting about TikTok warriors telling him to “stay out of politics” after an RFK Jr pull-up rant, uninvited life-coach replies to a simple “I'll be 60 when my kids graduate” thread, health scolds comparing a Pura Vida tuna sandwich to two Big Macs, and strangers who jinx an empty middle seat before the plane door even closes. Then he dives into listener complaints: a December birthday dictator who holds friendships hostage over a group dinner, baby gifts that are somehow dry-clean only, Reddit poisoning how people hear their favorite podcasts, and a sister-in-law who wants guests to split the cost of the Christmas roast. It's one big, cathartic gripe-fest with plenty of laughs.Jared is on tour!
