In this episode, we journey into the vibrational worlds of sound, ancestry, and deep listening with Whaia, a Ngāti Kahungunu woman of Māori descent and First Nations sonic weaver and multi-instrumentalist. Raised between the salt of the Pacific and the red dust of the Australian desert, Whaia's voice carries ancient songlines, blending traditional Māori instruments, crystalline singing bowls, and her original mother tongue, the language of Te Rā, the Sun. We explore her work singing with whales, reclaiming cultural instruments once left silent in museums, and remembering the sacred oceanic highways navigated by her Polynesian ancestors, guided by the stars and whale ancestors. This is a conversation about song as medicine, the voice as ceremony, and reclaiming lineage through sound. We ask: what might the whales be singing to us now? What frequencies are we called to remember in order to heal ourselves and our waters? Stay on after the episode wraps to hear a special feature from Whaia's debut album WHAIA & WATER — the first of a twelve-part series known as her Sacred Sonic Sessions. In this episode, Guy engaged in a profoundly moving and inspirational conversation with Suraj Holzwarth, a medicine woman and shamanic healer. The discussion explored the intersection of deep personal trauma and spiritual enlightenment, where Suraj shared her journey through unimaginable loss, the insights gained from shamanic practices, and her flash of enlightenment through plant medicine. Emphasizing the importance of spiritual connection, intuition, and accepting oneself as the embodiment of light, the episode invites listeners to contemplate their own purpose and path amidst life's tribulations. This powerful dialogue also delved into the current state of global consciousness and the collective initiation humanity is undergoing, urging a return to inner truths and the spiritual essence of being. Every Friday, musician Enes Salman performs the Sevdalinka, an ancient form of love song from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sevdalinka was recently included in UNESCO's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. UNESCO is The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Sevdalinka is often called the Balkan Blues. It is a somewhat sad form of urban love song that dates to the 1500s. It is a mix of South Slavic spoken poetry and music of the Ottoman Empire. Salman is among only a few musicians keeping the tradition alive. "I have been playing and singing Sevdalinka since I was 14," he said before a recent performance. “我从 14 岁起就开始演奏和演唱《塞夫达林卡》,”他在最近的一场演出前说道。Sevdalinka is often performed a cappella. That means it is sung without musical instruments. Sometimes the performer sings with traditional instruments like a lute. This form, or genre, of music has been carried from generation to generation through performances at family gatherings. In recent years, younger musicians have brought modern versions of Sevdalinka to audiences around the world. One of them is Damir Imamovic. His father and grandfather were famous Sevdalinka performers. In 2020 and 2021, Imamovic won awards from two world music publications, Songlines and Transglobal, for best European album. Imamovic supports Sevdalinka internationally through his SevdahLab project. The project helped build support for the music's inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage list. "I realized how little the public knows about the Sevdalinka genre and wanted to reveal the story behind that music," he said. “我意识到公众对塞夫达林卡流派知之甚少,因此想揭示这种音乐背后的故事,”他说。Zanin Berbic is a 28-year-old ethno-musicologist. He works as a curator in the music department of Bosnia's Regional Museum in Sarajevo, organizing, protecting, and bringing attention to music. He also plays saz, a long-necked lute used in Ottoman classical music. He said that Sevdalinka tells the story of Bosnia's history. Berbic said, "Most of my days I spend either singing or playing Sevdalinka songs or reading or talking about them. Sevdalinka is my life," he said.

With THE NOTEBOOK: A History of Thinking on Paper (Biblioasis), Roland Allen explores how the proliferation of paper & binding changed culture, business, and maybe the nature of human consciousness. We talk about how keeping a diary got him obsessed-ish with notebooks, how he found a narrative and protagonists as he delved into the history of notebooks, and what it means to see the notebook as a piece of technology/hardware. We get into their influence on art and the Renaissance (and the theory that sketchbooks allowed artists to move toward realism), how diaries created a new, private persona distinct from the public self, how he discovered a new reading for a line of Hamlet, and how digital options never manage to replace the paper notebook. We also discuss how Moleskine came to dominate the notebook market and how Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines jumpstarted their craze, how Roland learned to switch off the "this isn't interesting" filter in his own diaries, how writing this book made him a better notebooker, the way Dutch album amicorum (friendship books) served as a social media precursor, how our notebooks can outlive us (and his posthumous plans for his diaries), and a lot more. She has since traveled over a million miles touching a million people in 20 countries with the 7 ft, crystal inlaid, thundering heartbeat of the world's largest drum of its kind, Grandmother Drum, and promoting unity, peace, tribal reconciliation, and earth sustainability. Her award winning CDs include “Journey of the Heart”, “Songlines of the Soul”, “Living Waters of Grace” and “Holy Ground”. She is the author of “The Magic Bundle” children's book, and “Songs of A New Earth” songbook. White Eagle is also the director and co-producer of the award winning documentary film “GrandMother Drum: Awakening the Global Heart”, selected as the Top 20 Spiritual Films at the Tel Aviv Spirit Film Festival. She is the founder and director of the Rainbow Fire Mystery School (RFMS) operating in Alaska, Hawaii and Peru and has led thousands of shamanic workshops, ceremonies and training globally for over 35 years. Starting with the acclaimed "Language of One" and "Heart of One" online spiritual programs, White Eagle has now expanded the RFMS to over a dozen certified online shamanic training programs. She is also the creator, director and lead instructor of the certified shamanic methods of Balancing the Shields© Community Mother DrumKeepers Training© and The Crystal Skull Method©.In 2013, White Eagle launched the Global Blue Flame Planetary Grid ceremony, activating and renewing the earth's grid in a one day ceremony annually with 62 trained groups worldwide.  Renamed by her tour staff, “Indiana Jane” for her utter perseverance to fund and travel the 7ft thundering symbol of the heartbeat of love globally, White Eagle has certainly “traveled to the beat of a different drummer,” placing herself in the midst of countless social, racial tribal and political conflicts, environmental crisis' and personal loss to sound the urgent call in awakening the heart of humanity. She has been honored to be initiated by many indigenous Elders and has been passed many of their ancient medicine bundles and global responsibilities. As a mother of two beautiful children and a total lover of humanity, White Eagle feels passionate that humanity can only move forward through positive prayerful activism focusing on the highest good of all and has often been referred to as the “Mother of the Rainbow Nation.”  As an internationally respected shamanic teacher and practitioner, White Eagle has worked in private practice all across the world with individuals, groups and organizations. She firmly believes that shamanism offers the most holistic and comprehensive approach to the human psyche and condition. She specializes in how the ancient elemental wisdom teachings, methods, plant medicines and initiation rites of indigenous peoples provide practical holistic tools for contemporary ailments of humanity. Her methods address the physical, emotional, sexual, mental and spiritual healing of the soul. She specializes in assisting the individual and community to heal trauma, transform the past and its karma, heal and transform grief and loss, heal all kinds of personality disorders by reclaiming one's personal power through what she calls the soul driver's or Shields. This in turn promotes health, longevity and expanded consciousness, accessing one's true spiritual power, meaning and purpose. She brings to this sacred work a spiritual curiosity, multidimensionality and a loving witness to each person's "hero or heroine's journey" exploring the mystery with them, their unique initiations designed to test their own self-mastery. She honors each person's path to enlightenment, allowing each soul to unfold a new hoop of learning and stabilize present moment awareness as the core and source of lasting inner peace.  She has recently gone through the most inconceivable and hardest human initiation possible in losing her only daughter Sierra (age 33) in 2022 to alcoholism. White Eagle's strength through this ongoing breakdown to breakthrough, death and rebirth process continues to melt our hearts and blast open our consciousness to a much higher understanding of life beyond death. Catalan folk duo Tarta Relena's vocal-based music limns centuries and borders, ranges from the sacred to the secular, and often uses electronics. Their body of work so far reimagines Mediterranean folk, Georgian laments, and the 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen. Then, there's their setting of verse from Afghan Pashto women singing about “controversial subjects such as envy, broken hearts, hatred or lust”, and adapted sacred music (they met as members of a religious music choir), (Songlines, 2022). Singing in Catalan, Spanish, Greek, Latin, English and Ladino, they treat each language as a tool, a color to bring up an emotion. Tarta Relena's arrangements and performances traffic in the intense spirituality and human connection of the music, which lands with joy and poignancy, enhanced by dramatic use of electronics: percussion, drone, some bass synth, and vocal effects. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Tarta Relena sings a cappella, just like they started the duo back in 2016. They perform on location from the 2023 Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN. - Caryn Havlik P.S. “Tarta relena” means “stuffed pie” in Spanish. EPISODE 1453: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to the Oxford Professor of Global History and author of THE EARTH TRANSFORMED, Peter Frankopan, about what we can learn from history about today's environmental crisis Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University, where he is Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research and Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford. He is also Professor of Silk Roads Studies and a Bye-Fellow at King's College, Cambridge. He works on the history and politics of the Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East, Persia/Iran, Central Asia, China and beyond - as well as on the histories of climate, natural resources and connectivities. Peter often writes for the international press, including The Sunday Times, New York Times, Financial Times, Guardian, and the Evening Standard. He has been called 'the first great historian of the 21st century' by Brazil's DCM magazine; 'the history rock star du jour by The New Statesman, and simply 'a rock-star historian' (VLT - Sweden; Helsingin Sanomat - Finland). The Times has called him 'a literary star.' Silk Roads was named The Daily Telegraph's History Book of the Year 2015. it went to Number One in the Sunday Times Non-Fiction charts, remaining in the Top 10 for nine months in a row, as well as being #1 in China, India and many other countries around the world, selling more than 2m copies. It is one of 'ten books that change how you see the world' (The Times). It was named one of the 'Books of the Decade' 2010-20 by the Sunday Times. His follow-up, The New Silk Roads, is a 'masterly-mapping out of anew world order', according to the Evening Standard, and 'a brilliant guide to terra incognita' (Sunday Times) that is reminiscent of Tolstoy (Daily Telegraph). It won the Human Sciences prize of the Carical Foundation in 2019. In his latest book, The Earth Transformed: An Untold History, Peter looks at environmental history, at climate and the ways it has shaped the human and natural past. 'This is an endlessly fascinating book', says Gerard DeGroot in The Times, 'an easy read on an important subject. It has the intellectual weight and dramatic force of a tsunami.' According to Walter Scheidel in The Financial Times: 'Humanity has transformed the Earth: Frankopan transforms our understanding of history.' In December 2018, The Silk Roads was named one of the 25 most influential books translated into Chinese in the last 40 years, alongside One Hundred Years of Solitude, Pride and Prejudice, Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby. In 2019, he won the prestigious Calliope Prize of the German Emigration Center, one of the richest prizes for the Humanities in Germany. In 2016-18, Peter's Songlines audio channel in which he chose his favourite pieces of world music was part of British Airways' In-Flight Entertainment system. In 2018, The Silk Roads was chosen as part of the Government of Pakistan's Read to Lead program to encourage literacy in the country. It was the inspiration for a new character in The Vikings mini-series. He has collaborated with Katie Melua and students at Oxford to create music based inspired by The Silk Roads. Peter's books The Silk Roads: A New History of the World and The New Silk Roads: The Future and Present of the World have been translated into forty languages. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. I'd advise either printing out the handout from https://enistello.info or having it on a screen you can see easily while outdoors. But it's not essential! Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled for part two of this series on Hacker Public Radio, when I'll cover more complex rhythms and you'll learn a lot more about pitch in written music. "In the beginning was the Word, the OM, Tao, Logos, Music of the Spheres, Songlines, the Song of the Creator..." The Yoga of Sound Series Exploring Inner Sound Meditation (Auditory Mysticism, The Sound Current, Audible Life Stream, Surat Shabd Yoga) in the Sacred Texts of the Great World Religions, Gnostic Traditions, and the Path of the Masters (Sant Mat, Radhasoami,). TODAY: The Introduction, Buddhism, also, The Bahai Faith.   "As you calm down, you can experience the Sound of Silence in the mind. You hear it as a kind of high frequency Sound, a ringing Sound that's always there. It is just normally never noticed. Now when you begin to hear that Sound of Silence, it's a sign of emptiness -- of silence of the mind. It's something you can always turn to. As you concentrate on it and turn to it, it can make you quite peaceful and blissful. Meditating on that, you have a way of letting the conditions of the mind cease without suppressing them with another condition. Otherwise you just end up putting one condition over another." (Ajahn Sumedho)   "It is easiest to hear this Sound when it is quiet, particularly at night-time. Once you have identified this Sound, then you place your awareness on it without wavering. Resting your mind in the Sound, you continue to listen, going further and further into the Sound itself."
