A l'heure des alertes sanitaires qui frappent les marques de lait maternisé, retour sur l'histoire du lait en poudre. En pleine ruée vers l'or, des scientifiques américains mettent au point des procédés pour réduire des aliments en poudre, plus pratiques à conserver pour les colons en plein Far West. En Suisse, un industriel s'intéresse de près à ces procédés : Henri Nestlé crée sa farine de lait à Vevey en 1867 et le succès qu'il rencontre en incite bien d'autres à emprunter cette nouvelle voie lactée. Au début du XXe siècle, le Valaisan Maurice Guigoz se lance dans l'aventure, lui aussi. Ses produits de diététique infantile font bientôt le tour du monde. L'historienne Maryline Maillard revient sur l'histoire de cette entreprise et de son produit-phare au micro de Pierre Jenny pour Histoire Vivante. Eric Vuillard a écrit l'histoire de Billy the Kid en déconstruisant l'évènement qui nous a été raconté : une histoire qui nous a été racontée par son assassin : Pat Garett.    Une histoire ce n'est pas une vie. Une vie, ce sont les déchirements intérieurs. Une histoire c'est tenter de mettre ce qu'on peut imaginer de ces déchirements intérieurs mais à travers des coordonnées sociales : c'est replacer l'individu dans son milieu, dans l'Histoire.  Il existe quelques témoignages sur Billy the Kid notamment de paysan mexicain qui le décrivait comme quelqu'un d'amical, jovial : ces témoignages ont été passés sous silence. L'auteur raconte l'histoire d'un adolescent qui pourrait être comme les autres lorsqu'il est dépouillé de sa fiction, un adolescent victime du capitalisme, de la colonisation mais aussi de la violence intrinsèque des États-Unis.  Billy the Kid, de son vrai nom Henry McCarty, est l'une des figures les plus célèbres du Far West américain. Il doit son surnom à son aspect juvénile, presque enfantin. Il serait né en 1859 à New-York dans une famille très pauvre d'origine irlandaise. Orphelin très jeune, il grandit dans la pauvreté, bascule dans la délinquance et devient rapidement un hors-la-loi. Il se fait connaître pendant la guerre du comté de Lincoln au Nouveau-Mexique, une guerre de territoires entre factions rivales. Il acquiert la réputation d'un tireur rapide et efficace. Il a la réputation d'avoir tué 21 hommes, mais ce nombre est sujet à caution et serait plutôt de 9 hommes. Malgré ses crimes, il bénéficie d'une certaine sympathie populaire amplifiée par les journaux qui relatent ses exploits. Il est tantôt considéré comme un criminel sans foi ni loi, tantôt comme un rebelle face aux puissants. Il est finalement capturé, condamné à mort par pendaison mais réussir à s'enfuir. Sa fuite ne dure pas longtemps : âgé de 21 ans, il est finalement abattu par le shérif Pat Garrett en 1881.  Invité : Eric Vuillard, né en 1968, est un auteur et cinéaste français. I had a podcast today with Erika Victor, who's this just unique individual who I had originally met at the Far West show in Austin, Texas. I had followed her on her Instagram because I liked her work. I just thought it was very unique. It has a sensibility that's different from most other people, and that's what I'm looking for in an artist. Erika came by my gallery in Tucson to record this episode and I had no idea that by the end of the podcast I'd be showing her work. I truly didn't expect to have that happen. After seeing her work in person, getting to speak to her for an extended period of time, all of that really solidified my idea that this is a person that has what it takes to succeed as an artist and is committed to her craft. She's from Kansas, and she got her degree in photography, but nowadays she teaches art in Zuni, New Mexico. Not everybody can make the transition to a place like Zuni. It's beautiful, I love the place and the people, but it's very isolated. Erika moved there for her job, but picked Zuni specifically over a handful of other options because of the landscape (something she absolutely loves to paint). She loves painting people too and her paintings of Native American people exhibit a contemporary approach to a classic western art theme.Anyhow, I enjoyed this podcast a great deal and I hope you like this podcast as much as I did. Nicolas, Catherine Dupont-Gagnon et Samuel Harper abordent deux sujets majeurs d'actualité en cybersécurité : la controverse autour de Grok et les développements récents concernant les centres de fraude au Cambodge. Grok : une plateforme problématique Le problème de la pornographie juvénile générée par IA Le premier sujet abordé concerne Grok, l'outil d'intelligence artificielle de X (anciennement Twitter), qui soulève de graves préoccupations en matière de pornographie juvénile générée par IA. Les animateurs dénoncent l'hypocrisie apparente de ceux qui prétendent lutter contre ce fléau tout en tolérant l'existence de cette plateforme. Seuls quelques pays, notamment l'Indonésie et la Malaisie en Asie, ont officiellement bloqué Grok. L'Europe reste relativement passive, l'Angleterre mène une enquête, et les États-Unis ainsi que le Canada n'ont pris que des mesures limitées. Elon Musk a même dénoncé cette situation comme de la « censure », un choix de bataille que les animateurs trouvent particulièrement troublant. Les cas choquants Le podcast relate des histoires tragiques, notamment celle d'une jeune victime d'un incendie dont la photo mémoriale a été utilisée par des utilisateurs de X pour demander à Grok de générer des images pornographiques. Ces cas se multiplient, particulièrement lorsque des visages féminins ou de jeunes filles apparaissent en ligne. Les mesures insuffisantes Les premières barrières mises en place par Musk consistaient à limiter cette fonctionnalité aux comptes payants, créant des situations absurdes où l'outil proposait de passer au forfait premium pour accéder à ces fonctionnalités illégales. Les filtres sont facilement contournables, contrairement à d'autres plateformes comme Google, MidJourney ou ChatGPT qui ont mis en place des filtres stricts dès le départ. L'inaction des grandes entreprises Apple et Google n'ont pas retiré l'application de leurs boutiques, malgré les violations apparentes de leurs conditions d'utilisation. L'administration Trump actuelle montre une tolérance extrême envers ce type de contenu, et les tentatives européennes d'imposer des amendes ont été contrecarrées par des représailles, incluant la révocation de visas et le placement sur des listes de sanctions. Un problème sociétal plus large Les animateurs soulignent que le problème dépasse Grok. Craig Silverman, journaliste spécialisé dans la fraude en ligne, a découvert 25 000 publicités sur Meta en 2025 pour des applications de « deepnude ». La facilité d'accès à ces outils, comparativement à l'époque où il fallait maîtriser Photoshop, amplifie considérablement le problème. La génération instantanée d'images ne laisse pas le temps de réfléchir aux conséquences, facilitant les actes impulsifs de revenge porn et de harcèlement. Les centres de fraude au Cambodge Le contexte Le deuxième sujet porte sur les développements majeurs concernant les centres de fraude au Cambodge et au Myanmar. Ces « scam compounds » sont des centres où des personnes sont retenues en esclavage pour commettre des fraudes en ligne. Pendant la pandémie, d'anciens casinos se sont reconvertis en centres de fraude, représentant jusqu'à 60 % du PIB cambodgien. L'arrestation de Chen Ji Récemment, Chen Ji, un magnat de cette industrie membre du Prince Group (un conglomérat incluant une compagnie aérienne, des projets immobiliers et des casinos), a été arrêté au Cambodge et extradé vers la Chine. Cette arrestation est surprenante car Chen Ji avait des liens étroits avec le pouvoir cambodgien. En 2019, le premier ministre avait même refusé de l'extrader malgré les demandes chinoises. Les développements récents Suite à cette arrestation, plusieurs centres se sont vidés. À certains endroits, les gérants ont simplement ouvert les portes et laissé partir les prisonniers. Des centaines de ressortissants chinois se sont retrouvés devant l'ambassade à Phnom Penh, cherchant à rentrer chez eux. Des milliers de personnes sont dans les rues en situation de crise, certains ayant été retenus pendant des années après avoir perdu leur argent au casino et s'être fait confisquer leur passeport. Une répression sélective Plusieurs hauts gradés de la police et un général du ministère de l'immigration ont été démis de leurs fonctions pour implication dans le trafic humain. Cependant, la répression semble sélective : certains centres continuent d'opérer normalement, et des journalistes rapportent avoir vu des personnes tentant de s'échapper être rattrapées, battues et ramenées à l'intérieur. La fermeture des marchés de blanchiment Parallèlement, We Guarantee, le plus gros marché illégal de l'histoire (sur Telegram), appartenant à des proches du pouvoir cambodgien, a fermé en mai 2025 après qu'une compagnie d'enquête crypto ait exposé ses opérations de blanchiment. Son successeur, Todo Guarantee, a également fermé après 7 semaines. Les pressions internationales Les hypothèses suggèrent que les sanctions américaines, la pression de la Corée du Sud (qui a émis des avis de voyage contre le Cambodge) et surtout l'insistance chinoise ont forcé le Cambodge à agir. La Chine est particulièrement motivée car ce sont principalement ses citoyens qui sont victimes de ces fraudes et qui se font trafiquer dans ces centres. Conclusion Les animateurs concluent en soulignant l'inaction générale face à ces problèmes. Que ce soit pour Grok ou pour les centres de fraude, les pouvoirs en place tardent à agir efficacement. Ils comparent la situation à l'époque du Far West d'internet des années 90, où l'absence de conséquences encourageait tous les comportements. La professionnalisation et l'application de règles avaient alors permis d'améliorer la situation, mais aujourd'hui, on semble avoir régressé vers un état d'impunité, particulièrement sur les réseaux sociaux où la tolérance est devenue extrême sous l'administration Trump. Cette première année de collaboration se termine sur l'espoir que 2026 apportera des changements positifs, bien que les signes actuels ne soient pas encourageants. Dans les années 1920, Hollywood est encore un Far West artistique et économique. Les studios naissent, meurent, se restructurent, et la Warner Bros… vacille. À cette époque, les frères Warner – Harry, Albert, Sam et Jack – tentent désespérément de s'imposer dans un marché saturé. Leurs productions coûtent cher, rapportent peu, et l'entreprise file tout droit vers la faillite. Et pourtant, leur sauveur n'est ni un producteur visionnaire, ni une star glamour… mais un chien. Un berger allemand nommé Rintintin.Tout commence en 1918, dans les ruines d'un village français ravagé par la Première Guerre mondiale. Un soldat américain du nom de Lee Duncan découvre une femelle berger allemand et ses chiots abandonnés dans un chenil bombardé. Il sauve deux petits, les ramène aux États-Unis, et en dresse un : Rintintin. Très vite, Duncan réalise que le chien a un talent exceptionnel. Il est agile, obéissant, expressif. Et surtout, incroyablement photogénique.En 1922, Hollywood apprend son nom. Rintintin décroche un rôle dans The Man from Hell's River, et c'est un triomphe. Le public, encore marqué par la guerre, se passionne pour ce chien héroïque, symbole de loyauté et de bravoure. Les producteurs de Warner Bros, eux, voient surtout une aubaine.La Warner, à l'époque, est au bord du gouffre. Elle n'a pas les moyens de rivaliser avec les géants comme Paramount ou MGM. Mais elle peut miser sur un phénomène. Rintintin devient donc la star du studio. Entre 1923 et 1930, il tourne près de trente films et remplit les salles à un niveau inattendu. On raconte qu'à certains moments, ses films rapportent jusqu'à la moitié des revenus annuels de la Warner. On le surnomme même « la saucisse à quatre pattes qui nourrit les frères Warner ».Ce succès permet au studio de survivre, puis d'investir dans ce qui deviendra son grand coup stratégique : le cinéma parlant. Sans l'argent généré par Rintintin, la Warner n'aurait probablement pas eu les moyens de produire The Jazz Singer en 1927, le premier film parlant à succès, celui qui transforme l'industrie et propulse le studio au premier rang d'Hollywood.Ainsi, l'histoire est simple mais incroyable : sans un chiot sauvé des décombres de la Grande Guerre, la Warner Bros n'aurait peut-être jamais existé telle que nous la connaissons. When a people face "fightings without" and "fears within", what keeps them standing? Is it possible to serve God without constantly worrying about your property, or even your family? D&C 115–120 answers these questions, providing counsel for a Church struggling to survive. Summary: In this episode, we explore revelations given as the Saints faced intense persecution in Missouri and internal apostasy in Kirtland. D&C 115 renames the Church, emphasizing that "thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". The Lord calls Far West to be a "holy and consecrated land" , providing a "refuge from the storm". D&C 116 identifies "Spring Hill" as the sacred place of Adam-ondi-Ahman , where Adam shall come to visit his people. D&C 117 focuses on material priorities. The Lord asks, "what is property unto me?" , commanding the Saints to "let them go" and focus on the "more weighty matters". We highlight the incredible faith of Oliver Granger, whose sacrifice was deemed "more sacred...than his increase". The Lord also warns against a "littleness of soul" and the deeds of the Nicolaitane band. D&C 118 issues a stunning challenge to the Twelve Apostles: to depart for their mission on April 26th from the cornerstone of the Far West temple, a site surrounded by enemies. The Lord promises to "provide for their families" as they go forth. D&C 119-120 reveals the Law of Tithing: first, all "surplus property" , and subsequently, "one-tenth of all their interest annually". This law is declared a "standing law...forever" because sacrifice sanctifies , helping to "sanctify the land of Zion". D&C 120 reveals that the disbursement of these funds must be managed by a presiding council. October 13-19I stand in Far West, a rather obscure place in northern Missouri, and as far as I can see, where once there was a bustling community of Latter-day Saints with homes, shops and a school, there are only empty fields. What happened to the people who once were here and why is only silence left behind? How could it possibly be that a sitting governor could order an extermination order on a group of people? This is a rebroadcast. The 1838 Mormon Missouri War remains a pivotal and often tragic chapter in Latter-day Saint history. We're revisiting an interview with Steven LeSueur, an esteemed historian and author of what is considered by many to be the definitive book on the conflict, "The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri.” LeSueur, who sadly passed away in July 2025, was remembered for his significant contributions to understanding this complex period. https://youtu.be/YGlNLnA9RIA Historian Behind the Book LeSueur, who lived in Arlington, Virginia, was not a full-time historian. He described his career primarily as a journalist, covering national defense issues, editing a technology magazine, and working as a freelance writer for businesses before his retirement. Despite this, his historical expertise was profound. His seminal book, published in 1987 by the University of Missouri Press, originated from his master's thesis in American history at George Mason University. His interest in Missouri history stemmed from early research work he did for Lamar Barrett at BYU in 1976-1977, immediately after graduating with his undergraduate history degree from BYU. This early work involved delving into diaries and letters to find references to "Adam's altar" (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and exploring various historical sites in Missouri. For his book, LeSueur conducted extensive research at the Library of Congress, Utah archives, and multiple trips to Missouri, even staying with prominent Community of Christ historian Bill Russell, who, along with Valeen Tippets Avery, reviewed his manuscript. LeSueur also lent his expertise to a documentary called "Trouble in Zion," where he was one of several "talking heads" discussing the Mormon experience in Missouri, sharing his interpretations of the events. Seeds of Conflict: Beyond Simple Blame LeSueur's approach to the Mormon Missouri War focuses on understanding how events unfolded, emphasizing a snowball effect of reactions rather than a grand conspiracy. While recognizing the immense suffering of the Mormons, he seeks to explain why Missourians reacted as they did. Key events & LeSueur's interpretations include: Jackson County Expulsion (1832): The Mormons were unjustly driven from Jackson County, having done nothing wrong. While a newspaper article about "Free People of Color" was a point of contention, LeSueur suggests Missourians' misinterpretation was likely driven by their deep-seated fear of anything perceived as attacking slavery, rather than solely as an excuse to expel Mormons. The Caldwell County Compromise (1836): After Mormons were driven from Jackson and found refuge in Clay County, Joseph Smith's plans for another military expedition prompted fearful Clay County citizens to propose creating a county exclusively for Mormons – Caldwell County. This was shepherded by Alexander Doniphan. The "Broken Agreement": Missourians largely believed that, in exchange for Caldwell County, Mormons had implicitly agreed to settle only there. LeSueur found no such agreement in Mormon sources, but Missourians, including Doniphan, clearly perceived it. For about a year and a half (late 1836 into 1838), relations were relatively peaceful, resting on this perceived agreement. Joseph Smith's Arrival and Mormon Expansion (March 1838): When Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon moved from Kirtland to Missouri, Far West (in Caldwell County) became the new gathering place, and plans for expansion beyond Caldwell into Davies (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and Carroll (Dewitt) counties began. This expansion, especially large-scale settlements, was seen by Missourians as breaking the agreement and triggered renewed protests. The Danites: This paramilitary organization was formed in June 1838, primarily by Samson Avard and others. Initially, their purpose was internal regulation, enforcing orthodoxy and the law of consecration among Mormons. They notably drove dissenters like Oliver Cowdery and the Whitmers from Fa...
