Impitoyable, Unforgiven en anglais, un film de Clint Eastwood sorti en 1992 est un western crépusculaire et violent. Clint Eastwood, cowboy décati, partage lʹaffiche avec Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Francis Fisher et Saul Rubinek. Le casting est brillant, la direction dʹacteur également. Clint Eastwood revient au genre de prédilection qui lʹa fait connaître. Il est à la fois devant et derrière la caméra, réalisateur et producteur, sʹentourant dʹune équipe de fidèles pour mener à bien ce projet qui marque les esprits, en renouvelant littéralement un genre quʹon disait moribond, voire carrément décédé, le western. En RDC, c'est la ruée vers l'or vert : les projets de crédits carbone, censés compenser les émissions des grandes entreprises polluantes à travers la planète, se multiplient au point de recouvrir la plus grande part de l'immense forêt du pays. Mais le bénéfice environnemental est douteux et l'impact social souvent négatif, selon la Fondation Rainforest UK. Pas moins de 71 projets de crédits carbone ont été recensés sur 103 millions d'hectares, soit déjà plus des deux tiers de la superficie forestière de la RDC. Une véritable ruée d'aventuriers vers l'or vert, selon Rainforest Alliance UK. « C'est un Far-West, observe Vittoria Moretti, co-auteur du rapport. Il y a vraiment beaucoup d'initiatives qui sont, pour la majorité des cas, portées par des entreprises assez douteuses, qui n'ont pas forcément d'expertise dans la conservation, comme par exemple les entrepreneurs français derrière Socodev. » Derrière Socodev, dans la province de la Tshopo : un producteur de clips musicaux et un ex-footballeur. Droits des communautés bafoués Certains projets dépassent allègrement la limite légale de 500 000 hectares. Et le consentement libre et informé préalable des communautés locales est souvent bafoué, constate le rapport. « En Équateur, il y a eu le cas de cette compagnie indienne KMS, illustre Vittoria Moretti. Les témoignages parlent de représentants venus la nuit qui ont fait signer des contrats en anglais, qui bien sûr n'était pas compréhensible pour les communautés et qui les engageaient pour 100 ans. Dans d'autres cas, comme dans la Tshopo, il y a aussi eu des cas de violation des droits de l'homme, parce que quand les communautés ont refusé le projet Grin Biodev, il y a eu beaucoup de rétorsions des forces de sécurité ». Déforestation record Quinze projets ont été validés au niveau national, trois ont obtenu la certification Verra qui leur permet de vendre des crédits carbone forestiers aux entreprises polluantes étrangères. Mais ces crédits, censés vendre la déforestation évitée en RDC ont désormais mauvaise réputation. « Aujourd'hui, un acheteur qui pourrait se prévaloir d'avoir acheté des crédits du fameux projet WWC dans la province du Maï-Ndombe, il serait très facile de lui sortir immédiatement les statistiques de Global Forest Watch, explique Alain Karsenty, économiste du CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement), et de lui montrer que la déforestation dans cette province n'a jamais été aussi élevée et qu'elle augmente depuis 2019 de manière régulière. Ça poserait un problème de crédibilité pour ces acheteurs. » Défiance des acheteurs Parmi ces acheteurs, Nestlé et EasyJet ont jeté l'éponge et le prix des crédits carbone s'est effondré (à 7 dollars la tonne). Le rapport de Rainforest Alliance UK demande aux autorités congolaises un moratoire sur ce système de compensation carbone. Il appelle les partenaires étrangers et le secteur privé à réduire leurs propres émissions de CO2 et à canaliser leur financement vers les communautés locales, en échange de service forestiers.

When a people face "fightings without" and "fears within", what keeps them standing? Is it possible to serve God without constantly worrying about your property, or even your family? D&C 115–120 answers these questions, providing counsel for a Church struggling to survive. Summary: In this episode, we explore revelations given as the Saints faced intense persecution in Missouri and internal apostasy in Kirtland. D&C 115 renames the Church, emphasizing that "thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". The Lord calls Far West to be a "holy and consecrated land" , providing a "refuge from the storm". D&C 116 identifies "Spring Hill" as the sacred place of Adam-ondi-Ahman , where Adam shall come to visit his people. D&C 117 focuses on material priorities. The Lord asks, "what is property unto me?" , commanding the Saints to "let them go" and focus on the "more weighty matters". We highlight the incredible faith of Oliver Granger, whose sacrifice was deemed "more sacred...than his increase". The Lord also warns against a "littleness of soul" and the deeds of the Nicolaitane band. D&C 118 issues a stunning challenge to the Twelve Apostles: to depart for their mission on April 26th from the cornerstone of the Far West temple, a site surrounded by enemies. The Lord promises to "provide for their families" as they go forth. D&C 119-120 reveals the Law of Tithing: first, all "surplus property" , and subsequently, "one-tenth of all their interest annually". This law is declared a "standing law...forever" because sacrifice sanctifies , helping to "sanctify the land of Zion". D&C 120 reveals that the disbursement of these funds must be managed by a presiding council. La conquête de l'espace est désormais placée sur un axe qui paraît aujourd'hui irréversible. Et il se pourrait bien que nous ayons colonisé la Lune et Mars avant la fin de ce siècle, motivés par la curiosité scientifique et la volonté de sans cesse repousser les frontières. Bien sûr aussi et peut-être surtout les ambitions commerciales ne sont pas loin. Les ressources de la Lune et de Mars attirent des centaines de milliards de dollars d'investissements.   États comme entreprises privées sont engagés dans une véritable course pour s'assurer une place. Ce qui n'est pas sans risques tant l'espace ressemble à un Far West. La rivalité pour les meilleurs emplacements et l'accès exclusif à de précieuses ressources est là, d'où la nécessité d'encadrer cette compétition. Les interrogations ne manquent pas. Les acteurs revendiqueront-ils la souveraineté sur certaines parties de la Lune et de Mars ? Y aura-t-il des frontières ? Les colonies futures échapperont-elles à tout contrôle ? Ressources naturelles, positionnement stratégique, prestige technologique ? Faut-il y voir une nouvelle forme de compétition mondiale ou un pas vers une coopération internationale renouvelée ?   Invités : Emilie Desmonts, doctorante au Centre Alexandre-Koyré à l'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Il y a trois ans, la Thaïlande était le premier pays d'Asie à retirer le cannabis de la liste des stupéfiants. Mais depuis le 1er juillet, le royaume a fait marche arrière. Fini, l'usage récréatif, retour à une consommation strictement médicale. Un coup dur pour une industrie qui a généré 1 milliard de dollars l'an dernier. Entre flou administratif et inquiétude, les producteurs, les vendeurs et les consommateurs tentent de s'adapter. Reportage Juliette Chaignon à Chiang Mai et Bangkok. Il y a trois ans, Aeon était comptable dans le nord de la Thaïlande et n'avait jamais consommé de cannabis. Mais la légalisation et un marché en plein essor l'ont séduite. Aeon a investi alors 150 000 euros dans une plantation et six magasins : « Au début, j'ai pensé pouvoir gagner de l'argent. J'ai fait des prêts à la banque. » Jusqu'ici, les règles étaient simples pour les plus de 10 000 magasins sous licence : des fleurs de cannabis en vente libre, sauf pour les étudiants, les moins de 20 ans et les femmes enceintes, interdiction de fumer dans les lieux publics et tenue d'un registre des achats et ventes du mois. Mais depuis le 1er juillet 2025, un nouveau décret inquiète les vendeurs : les clients doivent présenter une ordonnance médicale pour acheter. « Je suis inquiète, car j'ai déjà trop investi et la vente sera plus difficile. Les clients ont peur d'acheter maintenant, ils ont peur de la police. Et j'ai peur de devoir licencier mes employés », raconte Aeon. Depuis l'entrée en vigueur des nouvelles règles, quelques dizaines de magasins ont été sanctionnés. Certaines boutiques, elles, n'ont rien changé. Elles misent sur le flou des autorités, qui n'ont pas encore détaillé comment concrètement appliquer la loi. Ils roulent leur joint sur la terrasse. « Je n'ai pas eu besoin de prescription pour acheter. C'est un peu confus. Tu viens d'acheter ça... C'était combien ? », demande l'un. « Six euros pour 3 grammes », répond l'autre. « C'est aussi simple que d'acheter de la bière », s'amuse le premier. Dans une autre boutique, Travis, un gérant californien installé en Thaïlande, a lui choisi de s'adapter : « J'ai des contacts de médecins, ce qui permettra aux clients d'avoir une ordonnance et de continuer à profiter du cannabis. » Pour lui, une régulation plus stricte en Thaïlande était nécessaire : « C'est un peu le Far West jusqu'ici. Et la surproduction entraîne une baisse de la qualité. » Officiellement, la Thaïlande a restreint l'accès au cannabis pour protéger la santé des plus jeunes et pour éviter le trafic. L'an dernier, plus de 800 voyageurs ont été arrêtés et accusés de transporter de l'herbe. Des justifications opportunistes d'après Chokwan Kitty Chopaka, militante pro-cannabis : « Ce sont des manœuvres politiques. Tant que nous n'aurons pas une loi spécifique sur le cannabis, n'importe quel gouvernement pourra imposer ce qu'il veut. » Le gouvernement dit aussi vouloir re-criminaliser le cannabis. Une mauvaise solution, d'après Kitty : « ​​​​​​​En Thaïlande, il y a toujours moyen de contourner la loi. Sinon, notre industrie du sexe n'existerait pas. Est-ce une bonne chose ? Pas vraiment, car le cannabis risque de se retrouver dans une zone grise. » Face à l'incertitude et une forte concurrence, Kitty a déjà fermé son magasin. This is a rebroadcast. The 1838 Mormon Missouri War remains a pivotal and often tragic chapter in Latter-day Saint history. We're revisiting an interview with Steven LeSueur, an esteemed historian and author of what is considered by many to be the definitive book on the conflict, "The 1838 Mormon War in Missouri.” LeSueur, who sadly passed away in July 2025, was remembered for his significant contributions to understanding this complex period. https://youtu.be/YGlNLnA9RIA Historian Behind the Book LeSueur, who lived in Arlington, Virginia, was not a full-time historian. He described his career primarily as a journalist, covering national defense issues, editing a technology magazine, and working as a freelance writer for businesses before his retirement. Despite this, his historical expertise was profound. His seminal book, published in 1987 by the University of Missouri Press, originated from his master's thesis in American history at George Mason University. His interest in Missouri history stemmed from early research work he did for Lamar Barrett at BYU in 1976-1977, immediately after graduating with his undergraduate history degree from BYU. This early work involved delving into diaries and letters to find references to "Adam's altar" (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and exploring various historical sites in Missouri. For his book, LeSueur conducted extensive research at the Library of Congress, Utah archives, and multiple trips to Missouri, even staying with prominent Community of Christ historian Bill Russell, who, along with Valeen Tippets Avery, reviewed his manuscript. LeSueur also lent his expertise to a documentary called "Trouble in Zion," where he was one of several "talking heads" discussing the Mormon experience in Missouri, sharing his interpretations of the events. Seeds of Conflict: Beyond Simple Blame LeSueur's approach to the Mormon Missouri War focuses on understanding how events unfolded, emphasizing a snowball effect of reactions rather than a grand conspiracy. While recognizing the immense suffering of the Mormons, he seeks to explain why Missourians reacted as they did. Key events & LeSueur's interpretations include: Jackson County Expulsion (1832): The Mormons were unjustly driven from Jackson County, having done nothing wrong. While a newspaper article about "Free People of Color" was a point of contention, LeSueur suggests Missourians' misinterpretation was likely driven by their deep-seated fear of anything perceived as attacking slavery, rather than solely as an excuse to expel Mormons. The Caldwell County Compromise (1836): After Mormons were driven from Jackson and found refuge in Clay County, Joseph Smith's plans for another military expedition prompted fearful Clay County citizens to propose creating a county exclusively for Mormons – Caldwell County. This was shepherded by Alexander Doniphan. The "Broken Agreement": Missourians largely believed that, in exchange for Caldwell County, Mormons had implicitly agreed to settle only there. LeSueur found no such agreement in Mormon sources, but Missourians, including Doniphan, clearly perceived it. For about a year and a half (late 1836 into 1838), relations were relatively peaceful, resting on this perceived agreement. Joseph Smith's Arrival and Mormon Expansion (March 1838): When Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon moved from Kirtland to Missouri, Far West (in Caldwell County) became the new gathering place, and plans for expansion beyond Caldwell into Davies (Adam-ondi-Ahman) and Carroll (Dewitt) counties began. This expansion, especially large-scale settlements, was seen by Missourians as breaking the agreement and triggered renewed protests. The Danites: This paramilitary organization was formed in June 1838, primarily by Samson Avard and others. Initially, their purpose was internal regulation, enforcing orthodoxy and the law of consecration among Mormons. They notably drove dissenters like Oliver Cowdery and the Whitmers from Fa...
