Signature Style Systems ~ Certified Personal Stylist, Image & Color Consultant, True Colour Expert

Your region was already shaping what you wore, what felt normal, and what got you sideways looks at dinner, long before you had any framework for personal style at all.   Colin Woodard's American Nations framework proposes that North America is actually 11 distinct cultures, each with founding values that have persisted for centuries.   The eleven nations: Yankeedom (New England to the upper Midwest): Founded by radical Calvinists. Deep investment in education, community improvement, and civic duty. New Netherland (New York City metro): Founded by the Dutch as a commercial trading hub. Pluralistic, cosmopolitan, entrepreneurial from the start. The Midlands (Pennsylvania to the central Midwest): Founded by Quakers who welcomed all. Moderate, consensus-driven, deeply suspicious of extremes. Tidewater (coastal Virginia and the Carolinas): Founded by English gentry who recreated a feudal aristocracy. Hierarchical, formal, oriented toward tradition and lineage. Greater Appalachia (the Appalachian backcountry to the Ozarks): Founded by Scots-Irish borderlanders. Fiercely independent, deeply suspicious of outside authority. Deep South (South Carolina to east Texas): Founded by Barbadian planters who built a slave society. Ceremonial, hierarchical, intensely communal within its own ranks. El Norte (the southwest borderlands): The oldest European culture on the continent. Hardworking, independent, shaped by two nations simultaneously. The Left Coast (coastal Alaska to northern California): Founded by New England missionaries and Appalachian prospectors. Idealistic, innovative, convinced it can build something better. The Far West (the interior West to the Great Plains): Shaped by the extraction economy and harsh climate. Pragmatic, self-reliant, resistant to outside control. New France (Quebec and Louisiana): Founded by French colonists who prioritized relationships over hierarchy. Communal, convivial, with a strong sense of place and pleasure. First Nation (northern Canada and Alaska): The nations that predate all the others. Cultures built on deep relationship with land, community, and living tradition. In this episode I'm applying that lens to style, introducing the 11 nations and their regional style archetypes, and asking a question most style advice never thinks to ask: which parts of your style are actually yours?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2026 28:59

I had followed her on her Instagram because I liked her work. I just thought it was very unique. It has a sensibility that's different from most other people, and that's what I'm looking for in an artist. Erika came by my gallery in Tucson to record this episode and I had no idea that by the end of the podcast I'd be showing her work. After seeing her work in person, getting to speak to her for an extended period of time, all of that really solidified my idea that this is a person that has what it takes to succeed as an artist and is committed to her craft. She's from Kansas, and she got her degree in photography, but nowadays she teaches art in Zuni, New Mexico. Not everybody can make the transition to a place like Zuni. It's beautiful, I love the place and the people, but it's very isolated. Erika moved there for her job, but picked Zuni specifically over a handful of other options because of the landscape (something she absolutely loves to paint). She loves painting people too and her paintings of Native American people exhibit a contemporary approach to a classic western art theme.Anyhow, I enjoyed this podcast a great deal and I hope you like this podcast as much as I did. This is our newest represented artist as of January 2026, Erika Victor.View available works by Erika Victor here: https://www.medicinemangallery.com/collections/victor-erika

The succession, built on a 20-year working relationship including nine years together at DRDGOLD, reflects the company's commitment to maintaining strategic continuity as it pursues ambitious growth plans. The company operates a distinctive business model focused on surface tailings retreatment—processing historical mining waste to extract gold while simultaneously remediating over a century of environmental damage. This "mega volumes, nano recovery" approach processes material containing just 200 parts per billion of gold, demonstrating that environmental restoration and economic viability need not be mutually exclusive. As Davel explains, "We own waste essentially. So how do we make the most of that?"DRDGOLD's disciplined execution has generated impressive results. Market capitalization has grown to approximately $2 billion, enabling capital deployment of roughly 10 billion rand in recent years, with another 8 billion rand planned over the next three years. This investment is building infrastructure designed for 20-40 year operational lifespans at operations like Far West, while repositioning the older Ergo facility for improved cost efficiency.Despite favorable gold prices—currently around 2.2 million rand per kilogram versus 600,000 rand when Far West was initially planned- management maintains the cost discipline developed during tougher market conditions. The company has paid dividends for 18 consecutive years while internally financing major capital projects, balancing stakeholder interests through what Davel describes as keeping "all your stakeholders equally unhappy" to optimize long-term resource extraction over short-term profit maximization.Looking ahead, DRDGOLD is exploring expansion opportunities across Africa and potentially South America, considering partnerships with established operators in unfamiliar jurisdictions while maintaining gold as its primary focus. Hooijer's operational project experience, combined with Davel's continued 12-month consulting support, positions the company to execute its Vision 2028 strategy while exploring how its proven retreatment model might address tailings challenges for major mining companies globally.View DRDGOLD's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/drdgold-limitedSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

When a people face "fightings without" and "fears within", what keeps them standing? Is it possible to serve God without constantly worrying about your property, or even your family? D&C 115–120 answers these questions, providing counsel for a Church struggling to survive. Summary: In this episode, we explore revelations given as the Saints faced intense persecution in Missouri and internal apostasy in Kirtland. D&C 115 renames the Church, emphasizing that "thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". The Lord calls Far West to be a "holy and consecrated land" , providing a "refuge from the storm". D&C 116 identifies "Spring Hill" as the sacred place of Adam-ondi-Ahman , where Adam shall come to visit his people. D&C 117 focuses on material priorities. The Lord asks, "what is property unto me?" , commanding the Saints to "let them go" and focus on the "more weighty matters". We highlight the incredible faith of Oliver Granger, whose sacrifice was deemed "more sacred...than his increase". The Lord also warns against a "littleness of soul" and the deeds of the Nicolaitane band. D&C 118 issues a stunning challenge to the Twelve Apostles: to depart for their mission on April 26th from the cornerstone of the Far West temple, a site surrounded by enemies. The Lord promises to "provide for their families" as they go forth. D&C 119-120 reveals the Law of Tithing: first, all "surplus property" , and subsequently, "one-tenth of all their interest annually". This law is declared a "standing law...forever" because sacrifice sanctifies , helping to "sanctify the land of Zion". D&C 120 reveals that the disbursement of these funds must be managed by a presiding council. Call-to-Action: What "stuff" or "property" do you need to "let go" of to focus on the "more weighty matters"? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
