In this episode of Gospel Tangents, host Rick Bennett sits down with Nathan Oman, law professor and author of Law and the Restoration, to uncover some of the most explosive and fascinating legal history of the Latter-day Saints. We dive deep into the unique world of 19th-century Mormon church courts, where bishops bypassed the traditional secular systems to build a harmonious Zion. Discover how these bishops handled financial disputes, strictly enforcing contracts for those who could pay, while actually helping poor and vulnerable members pay off their debts based on a highly “moralized vision” of equality. We also look into Joseph Smith and Brigham Young’s efforts to repay creditors following the Kirtland banking failure. The episode also cracks open the secrets of the Council of 50. Learn about their aborted attempt to write an inspired constitution for the Kingdom of God—drafted by John Taylor, Parley P. Pratt, and Willard Richards—which was ultimately abandoned because it lacked the necessary legal detail to function. È questo il tema centrale emerso dalla conversazione con Paolo Oberti, Head of Solution Consulting Italy, Spain & Portugal di Workday, una riflessione che va oltre il dibattito sull’AI generativa e prova invece a guardare al prossimo passaggio evolutivo: l’era degli agenti intelligenti.Per mesi il mercato ha raccontato gli agenti come la soluzione definitiva a ogni inefficienza aziendale. Ma siamo davvero pronti a delegare processi, decisioni e relazioni a sistemi che devono dialogare tra loro in un ecosistema ancora frammentato? Secondo Paolo, il tema cruciale è l’interoperabilità. Per la prima volta i grandi player tecnologici stanno lavorando alla definizione di standard condivisi che consentano agli agenti di comunicare e collaborare, superando quella logica di piattaforme chiuse che per anni ha costretto le aziende a investire milioni in integrazioni e personalizzazioni.Tuttavia, l’interoperabilità da sola non basta. Servono dati affidabili, contesto e soprattutto una governance capace di coordinare gli agenti digitali così come oggi vengono coordinati dipendenti e collaboratori. È qui che emerge la visione di Workday: utilizzare la conoscenza organizzativa presente nei sistemi HR e Finance per fornire agli agenti informazioni contestuali, regole e limiti operativi. Non un Far West di automazioni autonome, ma un ecosistema governato, tracciabile e coerente con processi, compliance e sicurezza aziendale.Il punto, però, non è soltanto tecnologico. È profondamente culturale. Durante la chiacchierata emerge una preoccupazione che molti manager iniziano a condividere: se deleghiamo sempre più attività cognitive alle macchine, cosa accadrà alle nostre capacità di analisi, apprendimento e creatività? Se il GPS ci ha fatto perdere il senso dell’orientamento e la calcolatrice quello del calcolo mentale, cosa rischiamo di perdere affidandoci all’intelligenza artificiale per sintetizzare riunioni, scrivere documenti e prendere decisioni?La questione diventa ancora più rilevante osservando le nuove generazioni professionali. Molte attività operative che tradizionalmente rappresentavano il terreno di apprendimento dei futuri manager vengono oggi automatizzate. Ma allora come si formeranno i leader di domani? Come svilupperanno intuizione, capacità relazionale e visione strategica? La risposta proposta da Paolo Oberti non è quella di rallentare l’innovazione, ma di utilizzarla per liberare tempo da investire proprio nelle competenze più umane: creatività, leadership, capacità critica e interpretazione del contesto.Un altro passaggio particolarmente interessante riguarda il rapporto di fiducia con l’AI. L’intelligenza artificiale può produrre sintesi accurate e contenuti utili, ma non comprende davvero sfumature, silenzi, tensioni o dinamiche relazionali. Può identificare ciò che è stato detto, molto più difficilmente ciò che volutamente non è stato detto. Per questo il modello dell’“human in the loop” rimane fondamentale: l’AI come assistente, non come sostituto del giudizio umano.Guardando al futuro, la direzione sembra chiara. Le interfacce tradizionali lasceranno spazio a conversazioni in linguaggio naturale, mentre gli agenti diventeranno sempre più personalizzati, capaci di adattarsi allo stile di lavoro e alle preferenze individuali. Una prospettiva affascinante ma anche delicata. Perché se questi agenti finiranno per rappresentarci, forse dovremo educarli come facciamo con le persone: trasmettendo regole, valori e obiettivi. E allora la vera sfida non sarà costruire agenti più intelligenti. Sarà costruire organizzazioni abbastanza mature da sapere come utilizzarli.

Deep investment in education, community improvement, and civic duty. New Netherland (New York City metro): Founded by the Dutch as a commercial trading hub. Pluralistic, cosmopolitan, entrepreneurial from the start. The Midlands (Pennsylvania to the central Midwest): Founded by Quakers who welcomed all. Moderate, consensus-driven, deeply suspicious of extremes. Tidewater (coastal Virginia and the Carolinas): Founded by English gentry who recreated a feudal aristocracy. Hierarchical, formal, oriented toward tradition and lineage. Greater Appalachia (the Appalachian backcountry to the Ozarks): Founded by Scots-Irish borderlanders. Fiercely independent, deeply suspicious of outside authority. Deep South (South Carolina to east Texas): Founded by Barbadian planters who built a slave society. Ceremonial, hierarchical, intensely communal within its own ranks. El Norte (the southwest borderlands): The oldest European culture on the continent. Hardworking, independent, shaped by two nations simultaneously. The Left Coast (coastal Alaska to northern California): Founded by New England missionaries and Appalachian prospectors. Idealistic, innovative, convinced it can build something better. The Far West (the interior West to the Great Plains): Shaped by the extraction economy and harsh climate. Pragmatic, self-reliant, resistant to outside control. New France (Quebec and Louisiana): Founded by French colonists who prioritized relationships over hierarchy. Communal, convivial, with a strong sense of place and pleasure. First Nation (northern Canada and Alaska): The nations that predate all the others. Cultures built on deep relationship with land, community, and living tradition. I had a podcast today with Erika Victor, who's this just unique individual who I had originally met at the Far West show in Austin, Texas. I had followed her on her Instagram because I liked her work. I just thought it was very unique. It has a sensibility that's different from most other people, and that's what I'm looking for in an artist. Erika came by my gallery in Tucson to record this episode and I had no idea that by the end of the podcast I'd be showing her work. I truly didn't expect to have that happen. After seeing her work in person, getting to speak to her for an extended period of time, all of that really solidified my idea that this is a person that has what it takes to succeed as an artist and is committed to her craft. She's from Kansas, and she got her degree in photography, but nowadays she teaches art in Zuni, New Mexico. Not everybody can make the transition to a place like Zuni. It's beautiful, I love the place and the people, but it's very isolated. Erika moved there for her job, but picked Zuni specifically over a handful of other options because of the landscape (something she absolutely loves to paint). She loves painting people too and her paintings of Native American people exhibit a contemporary approach to a classic western art theme.Anyhow, I enjoyed this podcast a great deal and I hope you like this podcast as much as I did. When a people face "fightings without" and "fears within", what keeps them standing? Is it possible to serve God without constantly worrying about your property, or even your family? D&C 115–120 answers these questions, providing counsel for a Church struggling to survive. Summary: In this episode, we explore revelations given as the Saints faced intense persecution in Missouri and internal apostasy in Kirtland. D&C 115 renames the Church, emphasizing that "thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". The Lord calls Far West to be a "holy and consecrated land" , providing a "refuge from the storm". D&C 116 identifies "Spring Hill" as the sacred place of Adam-ondi-Ahman , where Adam shall come to visit his people. D&C 117 focuses on material priorities. The Lord asks, "what is property unto me?" , commanding the Saints to "let them go" and focus on the "more weighty matters". We highlight the incredible faith of Oliver Granger, whose sacrifice was deemed "more sacred...than his increase". The Lord also warns against a "littleness of soul" and the deeds of the Nicolaitane band. D&C 118 issues a stunning challenge to the Twelve Apostles: to depart for their mission on April 26th from the cornerstone of the Far West temple, a site surrounded by enemies. The Lord promises to "provide for their families" as they go forth. D&C 119-120 reveals the Law of Tithing: first, all "surplus property" , and subsequently, "one-tenth of all their interest annually". This law is declared a "standing law...forever" because sacrifice sanctifies , helping to "sanctify the land of Zion". D&C 120 reveals that the disbursement of these funds must be managed by a presiding council.
