This week on the Deadpod we feature a Kentucky Derby Day performance by the band back in 1991. This was at Cal Expo, in Sacramento California on May 4, 1991.  The band starts out hard and tight with a roaring 'Hell In a Bucket'. They are without Hornsby here, and in some ways sound tighter and more together (although I'm well aware that opinions differ on how Vince sounds here). The 'Sugaree' that follows is very good, with Garcia really ramping it up in the solo.  I think that the version of 'The Race Is On' here is a real winner. 'Row Jimmy' is always fun to hear and they also feature 'New Speedway Boogie' which they broke out during the Spring tour that year.   Grateful Dead Cal Expo Amphitheater Sacramento, CA  5/4/91 - Saturday One     Hell In A Bucket ; Sugaree ; New Minglewood Blues ; Loser ; The Race Is On ; Row Jimmy ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; New Speedway Boogie ; The Music Never Stopped  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod043021.mp3  Hoping you have a fine Derby weekend, and a fine May to follow!  thanks for your support

Our post-Christmas Deadpod for this week features a show from the band's New Year's run in 1991, this one from Saturday night December 28, 1991.  While it is a Saturday night, the band surprises us by opening up with a (partial) version of  'One More Saturday Night' before heading into 'Jack Straw'. Bobby screws up his line, resulting in a roar from the crowd, but the real story of this set is that the band is tight and Jerry is in both fine voice and great virtuosity. Personal highlights include the 'Minglewood', 'Cassidy' and a great set-closing 'Deal'.        Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 12/28/91 - Saturday One     One More Saturday Night ; Jack Straw ; Peggy-O ; New Minglewood Blues ; Dire Wolf ; Queen Jane Approximately ; Loser ; Cassidy ; Deal    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122719.mp3   I want to wish everyone a very HAPPY New Year - let's hope its a good one..  Be safe, and take care of each other.    My thanks for your kind support this year, and I look forward to sharing more of this wonderful music with you in 2020!

Here's a show that I attended and found to be quite magical at the time.. it is from December 1st, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA. A beautiful, small venue, the energy on this night was unmatched and I'm sure it comes through on this nice recording. The show starts with a smoking 'Jack Straw', which Jerry then takes into a long and beautiful 'Sugaree'. After this we know we're in for an evening of great jamming, and the boys don't let us down. 'Uncle>Big River', is even full of life, and 'Loser' always a favorite of mine, is perfect. Brent, still new on keyboards, sings a nice 'Easy to Love You'. Bobby's slide work in the 'Minglewood' that follows, could be better but a great 'Althea' saves the day and the band ends this first set with a wonderful 'Music Never Stopped'.. We'll hear set 2 next week...   Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday One     Jack Straw [5:36] > Sugaree [16:52] ; Me And My Uncle [2:53] > Big River [6:18] ; Loser [7:21] ; Easy To Love You [3:43] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:21] ; Althea [11:33] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:44]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120619.mp3   Peace, health and happiness to all of you during this season.   thank you.

Happy Labor Day weekend! This week's Deadpod takes us to New York state, up to Rochester, where the Dead played a fine outdoor show during the day of September 1st, 1979.  The first set which we will hear this week, breaks from the gate with a fine 'Mississippi Half-Step' > 'Franklin's Tower' combination. This is for me the highlight of this set, almost 20 minutes long. The rest of the first set is fine, high-energy Dead, culminating in only the 2nd time that Bobby sang the 'Lost Sailor'>'Saint of Circumstance' combo.. since this is only the 2nd time he performed 'Saint' check out the crazy lyrics! Fun!       Grateful Dead Holleder Stadium Rochester, NY 9/1/79 - Saturday One     Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:56] > Franklin's Tower [10:22] ; Me And My Uncle [3:08]> Big River [5:32] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:02] ; Looks Like Rain [7:26] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:21] ; Lost Sailor [6:35]> Saint Of Circumstance [6:29]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod083019.mp3   Hoping you have a blast this weekend, as we once again bid adieu to Summer !

What will be the most exciting things to see play out during Ohio State's season-opener against visiting Florida Atlantic on Saturday? One of course is how sophomore quarterback Justin Fields performs. But what else? The revamped defense? The offensive line? The young running backs? Yes, yes and yes. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to delve into that on the Wednesday extravaganza. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Winter Time is Good Ol' Grateful Dead Time!   I hope you're not sick of primal Dead, because in looking about for a show for this week I came across this set from January 17th, 1970 and decided that it tickled me in just the right spot so I'm going to share it this week. The boys are clicking and transitioning to new vistas and I love hearing them work out jams like Phil on this Cumberland Blues or the great 'Dark Star' jam here. Naturally hearing Pigpen in his prime is just another bonus, (although I've read the reason the organ sounds different is that it came from a nearby church *lol* not sure how true that one is).   It's not all peaches and creme, this 48 year old tape has some flaws, including the beginning of Dire Wolf and a cut in High Time. Most heartbreaking is the missing ending of Lovelight, but I do hope you enjoy what we have here - we are really lucky to be able to relive it!     Grateful Dead Gill Coliseum - Oregon State University Corvalis, OR 1/17/70 - Saturday One - 1:57:08 Dire Wolf [#3:26];[0:37] % China Cat Sunflower [#2:13] > Jam [2:55] > I Know You Rider [4:24];[0:29] ; Hard To Handle [5:00];[0:25] ; Cumberland Blues [4:49];[1:04] ; Me And My Uncle [3:04];[0:18] ; Black Peter [9:32];[1:10] ; Good Lovin' [1:40] > Drums [0:15] > Good Lovin' [5:44];[1:41] ; Mason's Children [4:49] > High Time [6:#31];[1:19] ; Dark Star [20:51] > Saint Stephen [6:48] > The Eleven [11:16] > Turn On Your Love Light [16:56#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011119.mp3   Stay warm .. and thanks for listening and for your kind support!

Many high school teams are winding down their track seasons and starting to think about their summer program. Today we welcome Coach Ben Rosario, who has a couple of high school plans available to purchase on Final Surge in to talk about summer running and building a team culture during the summer. This podcast came as a suggestion and if you have an idea you would like us to explore please send us a message on Twitter @FinalSurge or hit us up on our Facebook Page.  We put out a question out on Twitter asking what topics that people wanted us to cover in upcoming podcasts, and we had a group of high school coaches asking for a show on the structure of summer running programs. So we decided who better than the author of probably the best high school cross country book out there which is called Tradition Class Pride, Coach Ben Rosario. I think we all know the goal of the summer is to build the aerobic base for cross country. I have heard college coaches and successful high school coaches say they think many high school kids are malnutritioned in the aerobic area. So how do we start working on this? The long run is a staple. I read when Mark Wettmore was a high school coach and winning state championship after state championship his upperclassmen had a 20-mile loop for their long run, and this was high school not at Colorado. And others say high school kids really shouldn’t be running either longer than their age or longer than 90 minutes. What is your thought? How do you vary mileage between boys and girls in high school? You have a new summer cross country training plan that will be available for purchase on Final Surge this week. How do you break it down for a team that may have new freshman runners and experienced runners going into their senior year? For a beginning group of new runners, how many days a week would they run early in the summer compared to the end of the summer? How do you keep running fun during the summer for them? What percent or your training is the long run on Saturday? One of the plans I looked at in week two you add in a couple days a week of drills and strides. What pace should the strides be in? And you mentioned drills are included, are these form drills? In the plan I looked at, you started out around 27-miles and built up to just above 50-miles at the end of 10 weeks. What type of mileage do you think this person was doing the season before? By week two you are getting a workout in on Wednesday, but not really faster than a tempo, and then the long run. The rest of your runs are steady runs, what pace do you recommend. There are some kids who will go to hard and then there are other kids who will jog if you don’t give them some paces. What pace do you recommend based on their current 5k times? Some questions from Twitter How often should female HS runners lift weights in the summer? What are 3-5 key lifts to include? How often should they be doing general strength/core exercises in addition to the lifting? What's the best way to evaluate HS talent to determine what distance they should run? You have two programs available for sale on Final Surge, the first is a training plan for the xc season and the second is a detailed schedule for summer running. If someone buys your 5k cross country plan, what can they expect to see inside the program? Links Tradition. Class. Pride. Ben Rosario on Twitter Final Surge Plans

The Murray brothers’ five-set win over Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt was ‘one of the most memorable days in British tennis history’, according to British Eurosport pundit Annabel Croft.   With Great Britain standing one Andy Murray match win away from a Davis Cup by BNP Paribas final for the first time since 1978, Croft joined David Law (BBC 5 Live) and Catherine Whitaker on the Tennis Podcast to talk about an epic doubles encounter.    "I've never experienced an atmosphere in my life like the one in this arena today,” said Croft. “It’s one of the most memorable days in British tennis history and Judy Murray said to me in New York that winning the Davis Cup is one of Andy’s major ambitions."   Sitting courtside in Glasgow as Bernard Tomic was put through his paces on Saturday evening, the Tennis Podcast team speculated about whether any changes to the team are likely.    ‘‘It is just such a conundrum for the Aussies over who to pick,” said Croft. "From what I’m seeing I think it might well be... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Ah how I love the month of May! Spring has come late this year, but I still find this month to be the most delightful... and I can never help but feature one of the Grateful Dead's classic performances from this month back in 1977. Clearly one of the greatest periods in their live performance history, while this month is well-known and well-liked I still can't resist pulling out one of these classic shows to feature this week. I can't begin to say what particular performance was the best during this exceptional period, but the show I've chosen this time is no slouch. This week we'll listen to set 1 - which in my mind features one of the all time best Peggy O's you'll hear, as well as a tremendous performance by Garcia on the set closing, Music Never Stopped.. It needs no more superlatives the music will speak for itself, let it lighten your heart like the song of a spring bird...
