When Viv and Matt sat down with Paul McNamee in April, the conversation naturally shifted to his time as tournament director of the Australian Open. McNamee held the role from 1995 till 2006, a period of extraordinary growth for the tournament. During this time, the AO's status rose to match the other Grand Slams, its brand identity was refreshed, and it attracted new audiences. This peaked during AO 2005, the tournament's centenary year, with the men's final between Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin attracting some of the biggest domestic TV numbers in ratings history. With Australian Open 2025 just around the corner, it's the perfect time to relive McNamee's memories of his time in charge. The TennisWorthy Podcast revisits Season 1 ahead of Season 2's debut in January 2024, with 5 themed episodes featuring legends and Hall of Famers. One of the great things about tennis is that you can lose yourself in it, but for that very reason, all involved have to remember that tennis doesn't exist in a vacuum. It can be a force for good, but only if it engages in the bigger world. Sports operate in the context of the wider world, whether that's as a force for good or to take a backseat when more important things happen. In this episode, Hall of Famers Stan Smith, Lleyton Hewitt, Pam Shriver, Vijay Amritraj and Mats Wilander share their experiences with their sport colliding with the wider world. For more information on the TennisWorthy podcast and full episode transcriptions, visit tennisfame.com/podcast.

The boys are horribly out of form but manage to synchronise calendars for the first time in a while to record another episode. Thanks to the listeners for your patience. Kooly's greeting is guessed by Jimmy and leads to a conversation about temples, pyramids and conspiracy theories (aliens?). Jimmy is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave in the UK, Boris is no longer the PM and the Martin family has attended a couple of concerts at Wembley Stadium. Kooly's planned Noosa trip was interrupted by a positive covid test so he travelled separately from his family, experiencing a few plane cancellations which resulted in having to celebrate his birthday a day late. A-league and Premier League soccer results are discussed (Fulham is back up!) as well as crowd/fan segregation and the neutral (neutered?) zone. Tommy and fam are preparing for his return to Australia which is bittersweet after 4 1/2 years in New York. What Gets Tommy's Goat this week revolves around finding which tv channel (or streaming service) the Yankees are playing on each night. Kooly's From the Archives recalls a camping trip with his school at Wilson's Promontory involving a nosey wombat. Congrats to Lleyton Hewitt being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. We're sorry in advance - this week your hosts Ellie, Briony and Georgia cover the (almost) incest filled book by Penelope Douglas, Credence. We follow the life of Tiernan, a girl with an unfortunate name living an unfortunate life after her parents voluntarily yeeted themselves from the chat of life. Our MC Tezza then goes to live with her estranged step-uncle and cousins in their isolated mountain cabin where things get a little… unusual. We meet many characters through this book, Mazza, Terry, Uncle Charlie Hunnam and cousins Lleyton Hewitt and Creepy Thin Man (who likes to sniff hair). AGAIN, we apologise for how unhinged we are in this episode. Ellie's T Swift moment: There's no song for this book - just listen to the playlist provided by Penelope x
