Meet Lauren Hagans, the 2024 Grandma's Marathon Champion, who made a sensational marathon debut, scorching a 2:25:55—running the fourth-fastest U.S. debut of all time! Though Lauren has coached many marathoners—and is surrounded by strong, NAZ Elite rockstar marathoning teammates who shared helpful nuggets—this was truly uncharted territory. "You never get to a starting line by yourself! Little pieces of magic were shared with me at moments of doubt along the way to my first marathon. They helped me develop trust." We discussed: -Her build—Lauren was concerned about pushing her mileage too high due to past injuries, so her coaches built her a plan that played to her strengths -Mentors/coaches who've had an impact—Todd Harbour at Baylor, Ben Rosario, Jenna Wrieden -Her most meaningful races—1:09:46 4th-place finish debut at the USATF Half Marathon Championships -Her perfectly executed Grandma's race plan and how awesome it was to share the joy with her coach Jenna at the finish line. -Her "stay in the fight" moment -And what's next Lauren has competed in 3 Olympic Trials on the track and is stoked to compete in the marathon trials in February. She is hoping to rock a fast half at Valencia before then. I'm looking forward to following more of her inspiring journey! The crazier and more difficult the challenge, the more it stokes Thia Angelo's competitive fire! During the quarantine, she ran 104 miles in 25 hours in the Backyard Ultra. In April 2020, she won the Broken Ladder Challenge—an event where you start running a mile a day and keep going up in mileage until everyone taps out. Thia started day one with her virtual Boston, running a 3:15 at 4:30am before work, and continued battling with her sister, Liz, and one other competitor, before winning it all by running 27 miles on the treadmill super early to take away their will to continue (she definitely has some David Goggins in her!) When she learned of the B2B (Boston to Big Sur Challenge), she convinced her sister to join her. They ran Boston 2019 (the Perfect Storm year) in 3:24 and bounced back with a 3:30 at Big Sur just 13 days later. Impressive stuff, particularly given Boston's weather that year. This year, she set a HUGE goal—go sub-3 in BOTH! Thia went for it at Boston, shooting to take down her 2:54 PR and suffered the last 10, but fought gamely for a 2:58 Boston PR. This time, she only had 6 days to recover before Big Sur! After a conservative 1:32:30 1/2, she ripped a big negative split and ran 3:00:46, finishing in 2nd overall at Big Sur! What Thia didn't know is that she WON the B2B Challenge and had set the record, becoming the 1st to ever go sub-6. (You'll have to tune in for a fun story with Ben Rosario, Steph Bruce, and Ben Bruce) We took a deep dive on her stellar recent racing, her friendly competition with her twin, Liz, and what's next. I hope Thia's drive to take on huge challenges will inspire you to tackle something new and exciting! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! "When I pass someone, I think: Poker face and pass them with authority. You don't want to give someone hope. There are a lot of opportunities to feel sorry for yourself in a marathon. I don't want someone that I'm going by to have a little something to fight for. "There was an academy called the Transcend Running Academy. That's where I came through. It's sponsored by (2012 Boston Marathon champion) Wesley Korir. I was working out with Wesley when I was in Kenya during high school. He taught me most of the things about running. I didn't know I would make it in running but when he started talking to me about the benefits of going to school and continuing running, I started being serious in those two areas.” Wesley Kiptoo is the 2021 NCAA Indoor 5000m champion and put together a third and second-place finish at the last two NCAA cross country championships. He was a standout star at Iowa State but now it's time for a new chapter in his career. Wesley has decided to turn professional and sign with Hoka's NAZ Elite. He will be training under coach Ben Rosario and he will be making his debut tonight in the 5000m at the Mt. SAC Relays. While in college, Wesley shows fierce competitiveness by pushing the pace from the front. He earned himself personal bests of 13:14.74 for the 5K and 27:37 for the 10K. In this episode, you'll hear about his big goals as a pro but also a dive into his personal history with the sport. This signing is a dream come true as he hoped to be a pro runner while growing up in Kenya running and walking 40 kilometers to and from school most days. Run Like Pro Even If You're Slow attempts to break down key habits and traits of professional runners and make them available to the rest of us. We tend to think that professional runners are somehow fundamentally different from the rest of us, but a lot of those differences are due to better lifestyle habits and more emotional intelligence which are things we can all improve to become faster runners. Each chapter of the book focuses on one topic such as managing mileage, balancing intensities, recovery, and many more. The chapters at the end contain training plans for 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon and ultramarathon distances. Each chapter ends with professional tips from Coach Ben Rosario.Matt Fitzgerald is a lifelong runner and endurance athlete, and an acclaimed endurance sportswriter who has authored and co-authored more than 25 books (29 or 30 depending on how you count). Along the way, we talk about Ben Rosario's idea to create 4 Grand Slams for track and field and wonder how the NCAA xc season will look if teams only travel by bus: https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=10019279. Scott Fauble (Hoka NAZ Elite) is currently one of America's fastest Marathoner's, with a personal best of 2:09:09 set at the 2019 Boston Marathon where he placed 7th. Scott will line up at the USA Olympic Trials for the Marathon this coming weekend (Feb 29 2020) in hopes of finishing top 3 and securing a place on the USA Olympic Team this year. In 2019, Scott was ranked 2nd in the USA for the Marathon on time. We were very fortunate to chat with Scott just a week before the Olympic Trials about his book – Inside A Marathon – where he and his coach at Hoka NAZ Elite, Ben Rosario document the entire four-month journey to Scott's 7th place finish at the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon. Scott shares his daily training log and recaps each week from an athlete's perspective–and includes plenty of humour along the way. Ben recaps each week from a coach's perspective and gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at creating the training outline for a professional marathoner. In our opinion, it's a must read for all competitive long-distance runners. In this podcast episode Scott answers questions we have about the book – Inside A Marathon and he also talks a bit about his training leading into the Olympic Trials. ** We apologise about the patchy audio quality at times during this podcast episode. ** SUBSCRIBE to Sweat Elite to learn much more about elite distance running: www.sweatelite.co/subscribe-now.
