Venture back in time with Boston's very own Paul Cirincione as we unravel the enthralling narrative of a life steeped in the melodies of the Grateful Dead and the dynamic world of live music recording. Our foray begins with Paul's initiation into the taping culture at a Dead show in '78, with nothing but borrowed equipment from an unlikely source. His chronicles from the golden era take us through the small, smoky venues and the blossoming vending scene, contrasting the cumbersome recording gear of yesteryear with the sleek technology we see today.Join us as Paul reminisces about seeing the Grateful Dead, sharing tales that intertwine his personal milestones with about 100 concerts over a decade. Whether it's a snow-laden odyssey to the Stanley Theater or a serendipitous ocean swim, Paul's vivid storytelling captures the essence of Deadhead culture. We'll get an insider's look at iconic venues, the spontaneous camaraderie among fans, and the remarkable drive that fueled the journey despite the demands of adulthood and a full-time job.But the musical expedition doesn't end with the Grateful Dead. Paul's diverse taste leads us through the punk scene's prime years, highlighting connections with legendary figures like Joey Ramone and intricate stories that bring us face-to-face with the likes of Al Kooper during a pivotal moment in music history. It's an intimate narrative that paints a picture of the raw humanity of these icons, etching Paul's experiences into the broader canvas of live music's transformative power. Let's set the stage for a symphony with Paul Cirincione as our conductor. This episode is sponsored by ShakedownTshirts.com with unique lot-style T-shirts and gifts for Grateful Dead, Phish, Zappa, Panic, and more. In 1972, Bob Marley signed with CBS Records in London and embarked on a UK tour with soul singer Johnny Nash. While in London the Wailers asked their road manager Brent Clarke to introduce them to Chris Blackwell, who had licensed some of their Coxsone releases for his Island Records. The Wailers intended to discuss the royalties associated with these releases; instead, the meeting resulted in the offer of an advance of £4,000 to record an album.Since Jimmy Cliff, Island's top reggae star, had recently left the label, Blackwell was primed for a replacement. In Marley, Blackwell recognized the elements needed to snare the rock audience: "I was dealing with rock music, which was really rebel music. I felt that would really be the way to break Jamaican music. But you needed someone who could be that image. When Bob walked in he really was that image."The Wailers returned to Jamaica to record at Harry J's in Kingston, which resulted in the album Catch a Fire. The Wailers' first album for Island, Catch a Fire, was released worldwide in April 1973, packaged like a rock record with a unique Zippo lighter lift-top. Initially selling 14,000 units, it received a positive critical reception. It was followed later that year by the album Burnin' which included the song "I Shot the Sheriff". Eric Clapton was given the album by his guitarist George Terry in the hope that he would enjoy it. Clapton was impressed and chose to record a cover version of "I Shot the Sheriff" which became his first US hit since "Layla" two years earlier and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 14 September 1974.Many Jamaicans were not keen on the new reggae sound on Catch a Fire, but the Trenchtown style of Burnin found fans across both reggae and rock audiences. The Wailers were scheduled to open 17 shows in the US for Sly and the Family Stone. After four shows, the band was fired because they were more popular than the acts they were opening for. In July 1977, Marley was diagnosed with a type of malignant melanoma under his right big toe.Contrary to urban legend, this lesion was not primarily caused by an injury during a football match that year, but was instead a symptom of already-existing cancer. He had to see two doctors before a biopsy was done, which confirmed acral lentiginous melanoma. Unlike other melanomas, which usually appear on skin exposed to the sun, acral lentiginous melanoma occurs in places that are easy to miss, such as the soles of the feet, or under toenails. Although it is the most common melanoma in people with dark skin, it is not widely recognized and was not mentioned in the most popular medical textbook of the time. Marley rejected his doctors' advice to have his toe amputated (which would have hindered his performing career), citing his religious beliefs, and instead, the nail and nail bed were removed and a skin graft was taken from his thigh to cover the area.Despite his illness, he continued touring and was in the process of scheduling a 1980 world tour. The album Uprising was released in May 1980. The band completed a major tour of Europe, where it played its biggest concert to 100,000 people at San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy. After the tour, Marley went to the United States, where he performed two shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of the Uprising Tour.He collapsed while jogging in Central Park and was taken to the hospital, where it was found that his cancer had spread to his brain, lungs, and liver.Marley's last concert took place two days later at the Stanley Theater (now The Benedum Center For The Performing Arts) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 23 September 1980. His Message (Don't Gain The World & Lose Your Soul, Wisdom Is Better Than Silver Or Gold. Love the life you live. Live the life you love. The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively) Remember One Love, One Heart...

Business growth speaker and author David Meerman Scott kept every single ticket of the live shows he watched since he was a child. So far, he has collected 804 of them. David is credited to be the only person who was able to photograph Bob Marley's last concert in Stanley Theater, Pittsburg in 1980, with his works featured in various documentaries and publications. With marketing as his main passion, he learned how to apply his love for live shows to his professional life. Sitting down with Adam Markel, he reminisces on his most memorable concerts and their lessons that elevated David's marketing career.
In Season 2 Episode 2 we look at 3 fabulous pieces of music. The first being from the Beacon Theater in NYC on 6.14.1976. This piece has a Cosmic Charlie, played for only the 2nd time in 5 years, the 1st time since 1971 was only 10 days before this show! That follows with a very solid Help>Slip>Frank. Next we stay in NYC but we jump ahead to 1990 and at the World's Most Famous Arena...Madison Square Garden. September 18th was the date and the band had taken on 2 new members to replace Brent; Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby were in full effect on this sweet Eye>Estimated>Foolish Heart. Vince is coming into his own and Bruce makes himself right at home with some dominant keystrokes. The final piece is an odd combination but some stellar playing makes it worthwhile. From the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, December 1, 1979 it's early Brent showing his chops on a fantastic He's Gone into a way out Gloria Jam into the 1st ever CC Rider. This one was one of my earliest finds and I am thrilled to share it with all of you. Enjoy and we'll have another episode out soon.
Hey Now! what a great second set this week as we explore the rest of the band's performance on September 26, 1972 at teh Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey. Right out of the gate we get a wonderful psychedelic ride with a 20 minute 'Playin In The Band'. Phil is all over this. They follow up with the very last performance of 'You Win Again'. 'El Paso' follows but things get sharp again with Half Step and Greatest Story Ever Told (albeit with a Donna wail). 'Tomorrow Is Forever' is the 2nd of 10 played in 72. Truckin' follows and turns into a monster jam with the Other One jam coming in around the 21 minute mark. This leads to the last 'Baby Blue' until 1974. The encore following the 'Sugar Mag', features a short but unique '26 Miles' tuning before 'Johnny B Goode' sends everyone home.. A great show from a great run is showcased in this week's Deadpod. This is from September 26, 1972 at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey. The first show of a three night run, this features some great guitar work by Garcia throughout, even here in the first set. A fine 'Cold Rain and Snow' might be overlooked by the early 'He's Gone', but there is so much great music here. I love the 'Bird Song' and the 'Sugaree'. The band is loose throughout and I'm certain you'll enjoy this classic performance. Thanks to Steve for this suggestion and a Happy Birthday to him! Welcome to Season 2 of 36 from the Vault: SUMMER TOUR! In Episode 12 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 12, from The Stanley Theater in Jersey City, NJ on September 27, 1972. Our first 1972 show in the series - and the first of three from September ‘72 in the larger Dick’s Picks Cannon, this is one of the best full shows we’ve heard thus far. Filled with great song selections, and huge jams, this is a peek into the world of The Dead post-Europe, post-Pigpen, as they were incorporating more jazz and psychedelia into their jams, and were fully connected behind the drumming of Bill Kreutzmann. The show opens with a rare “Morning Dew.” Typically a Set II closer, its appearance here overshadows Set I with an ominous feel. Later, “Bird Song” drifts like a dream before the set ends in wild fashion with a ripping “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” followed by an abstract take on “Playin’ In The Band. In Set II “He’s Gon” jams in a focused & medidative style before “Dark Star” hooks up for an ethereal and breezy take on the expansive jam vehicle. Elsewhere, “Cumberland Blues” rips unexpectedly, while “Attics Of my Life” offers the emotional resolution needed following a show like this. Steven and Rob focus on the impact of Europe & shows like Veneta on the band in 1972, and the transition they were about to go through as they moved into 1973 & 1974, two renowned years in Grateful Dead history. 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. Lucky us! We get to listen to this wonderful second set from December 1, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA on this week's Deadpod. This is a fine recording and the music is quite good, even thrilling at times. The China>Rider opener is just right, then pay attention to the fine opening to 'Looks Like Rain'.. quite unique. 'He's Gone' is done quite well alos, and leads into a wonderful jam that is clearly the highlight of this show.. including a 'Gloria' refrain'.. but just let yourself be carried by Garcia's shaping of the musical atmosphere here.. Listen to how worked up Bobby gets in the (first ever) CC Rider.. The rest of the set is more standard, but still a pleasure to hear, including a very fine 'Black Peter'. Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday Two China Cat Sunflower [5:21] > I Know You Rider [7:18] ; Looks Like Rain [7:37] ; He's Gone (1) [23:33] > C C Rider [6:58] > Space [6:#52] > Drums [10:26] > Not Fade Away [8:51] > Black Peter [11:14] > Sugar Magnolia [8:21] Encore One More Saturday Night [4:51] Comments (1) includes a Gloria Jam You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121319.mp3 Best of luck to you today! Here's a show that I attended and found to be quite magical at the time.. it is from December 1st, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA. A beautiful, small venue, the energy on this night was unmatched and I'm sure it comes through on this nice recording. The show starts with a smoking 'Jack Straw', which Jerry then takes into a long and beautiful 'Sugaree'. After this we know we're in for an evening of great jamming, and the boys don't let us down. 'Uncle>Big River', is even full of life, and 'Loser' always a favorite of mine, is perfect. Brent, still new on keyboards, sings a nice 'Easy to Love You'. Bobby's slide work in the 'Minglewood' that follows, could be better but a great 'Althea' saves the day and the band ends this first set with a wonderful 'Music Never Stopped'.. We'll hear set 2 next week... Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday One Jack Straw [5:36] > Sugaree [16:52] ; Me And My Uncle [2:53] > Big River [6:18] ; Loser [7:21] ; Easy To Love You [3:43] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:21] ; Althea [11:33] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:44] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120619.mp3 Peace, health and happiness to all of you during this season. thank you.
