This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982.  This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals..   Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday Two      Shakedown Street [15:03] > Lost Sailor [7:20] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:07] > Jam [5:28] > Drums [5:28#] > Space [8:50] > Uncle John's Band [9:00] > Not Fade Away [7:58] > Wharf Rat [9:41] > Around And Around [3:59] > One More Saturday Night [4:21] Encore      It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:59]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050225.mp3   hope you have a wonderful first week of May!!

Happy Valentine's Everyone!  This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA.  Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there..  The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really seems to be enjoying this one as he leads the charge throughout.. A sweet Stella Blue follows then an unusual ending as instead of Around and Around we get Man Smart, Woman Smarter into Johnny B. Goode not as the encore but as the set closer. The US Blues encore is a snappy ending to the enening..    Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 2/19/1982 - Friday Two      Alabama Getaway [5:41] > The Promised Land [4:09] Ship Of Fools [7:39] Lost Sailor [6:54] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:44] > Jam [5:13] > Drums [10:55] > Space [8:05] > The Other One [10:33] > Stella Blue [9:47] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:27] > Johnny B. We welcome December this week by returning to the second set of the band's performance at the Golden Hall in San Diego on November 24, 1979. This set has an upbeat beginning with 'Alabama Getaway' going into a classic 'Greatest Story Every Told' - listen for Phil in that wild transition. 'Ship of Fools' follows, with Jerry giving us a find rendition complete with some extended soloing where it doesn't usually occur. 'Terrapin Station' follows, leading into a long and interesting 'Playin In the Band '.   Drums goes into a short Space, then we're treated to 'Sailor>Saint', followed by a fine 'Wharf Rat'. The boys then rock it up with a good 'Sugar Magnolia' and the obligatory 'One More Saturday Night' encore.    Grateful Dead Golden Hall - San Diego Community Concourse San Diego, CA 11/24/1979 - Saturday      Two      Alabama Getaway [7:22] > Greatest Story Ever Told [5:07] Ship Of Fools [9:55] Terrapin Station [12:20] > Playing In The Band [14:23] > Drums > Space [1:47] > Lost Sailor [6:10] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:27] > Wharf Rat [9:27] > Sugar Magnolia [8:06] Encore      One More Saturday Night [4:46] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120624.mp3  Hope this finds you warm and dry!  My thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week's Deadpod features the second show the band played in 1980, this from the Capitol Theater in Passaic New Jersey on March 30, 1980.  Brent is fairly new to the band, and finding his way on some of these tunes.. they open with a relatively new 'Alabama Getaway' which goes into 'Promised Land' for a rockin' start to the evening. 'Cassidy' which follows 'Peggy-O' is a bit rushed, but the 'Loser' that follows is quite good. Brent debuts his 'Far From Me' which still needs some work but shows promise. Another highlight is the 'New Minglewood Blues' where Brent's Hammond B3 sounds especially good. The rest of the set is quite good as well - the 'Althea' is well done and Bobby adds alot of energy to the 'Sailor>Saint' combo to close the set.      Grateful Dead Capitol Theatre Passaic, NJ 3/30/1980 - Sunday     One     Alabama Getaway [5:02] > The Promised Land [4:15] Peggy-O [6:54] Cassidy [4:45] Loser [6:36] > El Paso [4:26] Far From Me [4:01] Tennessee Jed [4:40] New Minglewood Blues [6:33] Althea [7:43] Lost Sailor [6:03] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:56#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032924.mp3 Hope that you have a happy Easter weekend! my thanks to Steve for his suggestion of this show.

Here is the second set from the band's performance on March 3, 1981 at the beautiful Music Hall in Cleveland Ohio.  They open with 'China Cat', while Garcia flubs the first verse, he makes up for it with a fine transition into Rider. A rockin 'Samson and Delilah' follows and then a long 'He's Gone'. The Drums section is particularly potent here, leading not into a long Space but instead into a 'Sailor>Saint' combo. The 'Black Peter' that follows is very soulful indeed. They close the set with 'Good Lovin' then return for a 'Casey Jones' encore.      Grateful Dead Cleveland Music Hall Cleveland, OH 3/3/1981 - Tuesday Two     China Cat Sunflower [10:56] > I Know You Rider [5:48] > Samson And Delilah [7:35] He's Gone [16:33] > Drums [12:41] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:08] > Black Peter [10:31] > Good Lovin' [8:13] Encore     Casey Jones [5:19]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030824.mp3  "See here how everything lead up to this day And it's just like any other day that's ever been Sun going up and then the sun going down"

"Being summer, I took off my shirt...." well I'm not taking my shirt off but I am bringing you a summertime treat I think, with an excellent audience recording of the band's performance in Denver on July 14, 1981. As I listened to this tape it just struck me that the feeling of being there that a good audience recording gives you was perfect for this time of the year, when many of us have been lucky enough to experience some live music in person.. I do hope you have! This show has some excellent energy throughout, the Minglewood has a couple very nice Jerry solos, the 'Cassidy' is nicely paced, and leads into a sweet 'To Lay Me Down'.  Weir has some fun with 'Me & My Uncle' which is blistering.. as is the outstanding 'Big Railroad Blues'  The highlight of the set is the Birdsong>Sailor>Saint, however. It is only the the 14th electric birdsong since 9/15/73, and the only time that Sailor comes out of Birdsong. It is excellent.    Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 7/14/1981 - Tuesday One     Cold Rain And Snow [5:40] > New Minglewood Blues [6:41] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:00] ; Cassidy [5:05] ; To Lay Me Down [8:53] > Me And My Uncle [2:55]> Mexicali Blues [4:30] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:48] ; Little Red Rooster [8:23] ; Bird Song [11:48] > Lost Sailor [6:42] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:25] > Don't Ease Me In [3:06]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071522.mp3 Thanks for your kind support. This week we welcome December with a great show from December 13, 1980 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach California, just a couple months after last week's acoustic set. This first set is quite good all the way through but starts with an excellent trifecta -' Feel Like a Stranger' into a wonderful 'Sugaree'  then into 'C C Rider' with some great Garcia slide work. Then Jerry slows things down a bit with a soulful 'To Lay Me Down'. A fine version of 'Minglewood' follows with some unusual and impressive guitar work as well as Brent really going off on the B3.  'Ramble on Rose' is always a favorite, then a nice 'Sailor> Saint'. They close the set with a rockin' 'Deal'.      Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 12/13/80 - Saturday      One     Feel Like A Stranger [7:06] > Sugaree [11:28] > C C Rider [8:14] ; To Lay Me Down [9:42] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:39#] ; Ramble On Rose [7:04] ; Lost Sailor [6:06] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:41] > Deal [6:50]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120321.mp3    I hope this finds you healthy and in the holiday spirit.  Happy Hanukkah ! thank you for your support of the Deadpod.

In this week’s episode we dive into the heart of the 1980s for a complete show at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmon, VA on November 1, 1985, as well as a segment of the September 2, 1980 show at Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY. The main show finds the band competing with the intense vibe of the scene and working to will the crowd back from the brink. As a result, it features some of the most unique setlisting we’ve heard featured on a Dick’s Picks release, regardless the era. In the 1980’s segment, we hear the band toying with “Space.” before showcasing Brent’s initial impacts on the band, through a stunning “Morning Dew.”Disc One gives us our third “Dancing In The Streets” in the last two releases. The remainder of the set is upbeat, and updated takes on 70’s Dead classics here with their full band from the 80’s. Disc Two might be the most mellow set in Dick’s Picks history as “Samson & Delila” is really the only upbeat song of the night. What follows is an hour of deeply methodical and meditative music that only makes sense when one knows the intensity of the events of the night. “High Time>He’s Gone -> Spoonful>Comes A Time>Lost Sailor>Drums -> Space -> Saint Of Circumstance” bridges the second and third discs in stunning fashion. In Disc Three we move from the contemplative to the wedding party as “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “She Belongs To Me” and “Gloria” cap off a weird set that has to be heard. Finally, the set ends with a segment from 9/2/80 with a deeply engaged “Space” fading into “Iko Iko” before a stunning “Morning Dew” and “Sugar Magnolia” closes things down. It’s a wild and unique release in the overall catalogue, one that showcases The Dead at their most 80’s in 1985.This episode is dedicated to Thoughts On The Dead.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media.  Great set this week - the 2nd set from the band's performance at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on 10/11/80.  Great quality tape - and right off they sound hot .. a wonderful 'Stranger' punctuated with some smoking guitar. Even the Mama Tried>Mexicali has some real smokin' licks. Personally I find the post-Donna 'Passenger' to be one of the best of this period.. really well done. In this week’s episode we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 13, from Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on May 6, 1981. A return to the 80’s & the Brent era, this is a puzzling installment in the larger volume that features a lot of repeated tracks, before showcasing some stellar jamming in a bonus segment late in the show. Highlighting Set I, we hear an inspired Brent on “Alabama Getaway,” and a fiery Jerry on “Jack-A-Roe,” before the two collaborate for a fantastic jam in “Deal.” In Set II we hear the first “Lost Sailor -> Saint Of Circumstance” of the Dick’s Picks series, before the latter fades into a 30+min wild bonus segment of “Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain” from 1979, which heard Brent push his ideas on the band to fascinating results. Returning to Nassau, the “He’s Gone -> Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks) -> Drums -> Jam -> The Other One -> Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad> Wharf Rat” segment is filled with surprises and improv, making it a highlight for the era and the volume. In the dark ages of the early-80s, this volume showcases what made this era confounding and also fascinating all at once. Steven and Rob focus on the joy/challenge of virtual tour listening projects, the band’s songwriting shifts & creative malaise at this time, the curiosities of Bob Weir’s political beliefs, and the best shows that surrounded this version.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. Happy July 4th!  This week's Deadpod takes place back on July 1, 1980 in San Diego California, where the Dead would play a very nice show at the Sports Arena. This week we will hear the 1st set, which opens with a great Jack Straw > Franklin's Tower combo. They only did this opening combo eight times, but I think its a great way to open a show. Here we have a fine second set from the band's last performance at the Uptown Theater in Chicago IL, on February 28, 1981.  I think this is a very nice recording and an interesting set list, starting with the 'Cold Rain and Snow' opener, through the heart of this one, the 'Terrapin Station' into drums and Space, then a fine 'Other One' and 'Stella Blue'. While there is a bit of funky echo in spots, for me it doesn't diminish what is an excellent set.  Brent has some interesting sounds in that transition from Terrapin, and I'm always fond of hearing a soulful 'Stella Blue'...     Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 2/28/81 - Saturday     Two     Cold Rain And Snow [6:17] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:19] ; Ship Of Fools [8:48] ; Lost Sailor [6:09] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:33] > Terrapin Station [12:39] > Jam [3:03] > Drums [12:23] > Space [10:26] > The Other One [6:44] > Stella Blue [8:07] > Around And Around [4:01] > Good Lovin' [8:06] Encore     One More Saturday Night [4:26#]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030620.mp3   here's hoping March winds blow our troubles away...      thanks for your support, my friends.. be well.

Hey Now! Here's a great second set for your pee-Thanksgiving preparations.. from 11/2/84 at the Berkeley Community Theater, this was probably the highlight of the run, as the band turns in a solid performance highlighted by some great Garcia licks, some amazing Phil sounds and some excellent work from Bobby and Brent. The 'Help>Slip>Frank' is as always, a great opener, and the band revs it up during the jam in Slipknot! Bobby does a fine 'Sailor>Saint' here, and Brent adds a great deal of depth to Bobby's finale during 'Sailor'. Listen as well to Phil during that Saint for an example of his unmatched abilities. They move into a strong 'Wharf Rat' in the pre-drums slot then break out 'Gimme Some Lovin' for the fist time. They finish the Playin' in the Band they started on 10/28, then finish with strong versions of 'Bertha>Good Lovin'. They return for the last 'Casey Jones' until 1992..   Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theater Berkeley, CA 11/2/84 - Friday Two     Help On The Way [3:07]> Slipknot! Happy Labor Day weekend! This week's Deadpod takes us to New York state, up to Rochester, where the Dead played a fine outdoor show during the day of September 1st, 1979.  The first set which we will hear this week, breaks from the gate with a fine 'Mississippi Half-Step' > 'Franklin's Tower' combination. This is for me the highlight of this set, almost 20 minutes long. The rest of the first set is fine, high-energy Dead, culminating in only the 2nd time that Bobby sang the 'Lost Sailor'>'Saint of Circumstance' combo.. since this is only the 2nd time he performed 'Saint' check out the crazy lyrics!     This week I have the pleasure of presenting the second set from the band's performance on April 23rd, 1983 at the New Haven Coliseum in New Haven Connecticut. A fine set, as most that start with a smoking Scarlet>Fire, this set features some wonderful Garcia licks, especially in Space, combined with some excellent effects from Mr. Hart. A fine recording I'm a fan of the Saint of Circumstance, even if Weir gets a bit cheezy.. The Other One Wharf Rat is excellent as always. The double encore is an excellent touch.         Grateful Dead New Haven Coliseum New Haven, CT 4/23/83 - Saturday   Two Scarlet Begonias [12:47]> Fire On The Mountain [13:34] ; Lost Sailor [7:25] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:57] > Space [0:28] > Drums > Space [19:03] > The Other One [7:20] > Wharf Rat [9:28] > Throwing Stones [9:17]> Not Fade Away [#8:25]   Encore   One More Saturday Night [4:26] > Brokedown Palace [5:22]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041919.mp3   This one again goes out to Mike W.   thanks for your support of the Deadpod.   I hope you like our new look!! big thanks to Royce K for all his work on this!! This week we have the second set from the band's performance on March 10th, 1981 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. A fine set from an underrated tour, this one opens with a nice long Scarlet->Fire,  which leads into a surprisingly powerful 'Sailor->Saint'. Drums and space follow, serving as an extended prelude into a sweet 'Wheel'. 'China Doll' is a welcome addition to any second set, followed by a rousing 'Truckin'. |See if you hear the Smokestack tease as Truckin' heads into the Sugar Mag closer. As we head into the home stretch on 2015, I've decided to bring you another one of my favorites from 1980... this show took place at the University of Florida, Alligator Alley, on November 29th, 1980. This is a day after the show included on '30 Trips Around the Sun' and a day before the show immortalized on Dick's Picks' 8, Atlanta , 11/30/80. The boys were definitely on a roll and I hope you'll enjoy this fine audience recording of this performance this week and set 2 next week.  Being 1980 they roll out with a rocking Alabama Getaway into Promised Land. A wonderful Candyman follows, then Bobby takes over for a New, NEW Minglewood Blues, followed by a nice, lazy Row Jimmy. Mama Tried into Mexicali follows but then we have an excellent Althea. Sailor ->Saint leads us into the set closing Don't Ease Me In..    Grateful Dead Alligator Alley Gym - University of Florida Gainesville, FL 11/29/80 - Saturday One Alabama Getaway [4:30] > The Promised Land [3:58] ; Candyman [7:18] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:02] ; Row Jimmy [11:00] ; Mama Tried [2:30] > Mexicali Blues [4:36] ; Althea [8:14] ; Lost Sailor [6:30] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:38] > Don't Ease Me In [3:46]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121115.mp3     I do want to thank the kind friends who have donated to the Deadpod and who are my partners in bringing this music to you. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. The set starts off quite uptempo with a great 'I Need a Miracle' going into a rousing version of 'Bertha'. Bobby performs a fine rendition of 'Lost Sailor' which goes into again a nice uptempo 'Saint of Circumstance'. The highlight of the set follows, at least for myself, which is the fine Drums->Space and in particular the excellent jam which flows from that into a powerful 'Not Fade Away'. A delicate 'Stella Blue' is a perfect counterpoint here, and then the band goes into a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia'. They return for a fine 'Casey Jones' encore.    Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 11/2/79 - Friday   Two I Need A Miracle [5:17] > Bertha [6:45] > Lost Sailor [6:29] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:18] > Jam [13:11] > Drums [8:#07] > Space [5:00] > Not Fade Away [10:00] > Stella Blue [9:30] > Sugar Magnolia [7:51]   Encore Casey Jones [5:50]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110615.mp3   THANK YOU for listening and for your kind support!!!

This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from one of my long time listeners' who reported that his wife had one of those annoying incidents where some lout dumped a beer on her during this, her very first Grateful Dead show and nevertheless remained tolerant enough to accompany him to yet another Dead show 15 years later where the same thing happened to the poor lady! Despite all that this is a great show, and I'm happy to bring it to you this week, this comes from Falls Church NY from May 8th, 1980. It opens with a rockin' Alabama Getaway, and shows that the boys are ready to rock on this night! Other highlights for me include a fine 'High Time' and a great version of 'Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication'.. I'll be playing the second set of this show next week..    Grateful Dead Glens Falls Civic Center Glens Falls, NY 5/8/80 - Thursday Set One Alabama Getaway [4:21] > The Promised Land [4:10] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:15] ; Mama Tried [2:28] > Mexicali Blues [4:11] ; High Time [8:06] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:54] > Supplication [7:06] ; Ramble On Rose [7:35] ; Lost Sailor [6:09] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:07]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081415.mp3

This week's Deadpod is big in every way - a wonderful second set that features a fabulous Eyes of the World->Estimated Prophet->Franklin's Tower that lasts nearly an hour and is among the best versions ever of these songs. This comes to us from the great fall of 79 tour, this one is from November 5th, 1979 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The entire set is a real treat, starting with a rare second set opening Althea and closing with a truly rocking Sailor-Saint-Sugar Magnolia.. Grateful Dead The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 11/5/79 - MondayAlthea [12:01] ; Easy To Love You [3:26] ; Eyes Of The World [22:35] > Estimated Prophet [14:28] > Franklin's Tower [13:45] > Space [5:09] > Drums [7:36] > Space [2:39] > Lost Sailor [6:52] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:14] > Sugar Magnolia [8:46]Encore Casey Jones [5:50]You can listen to this weeks' Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod092608.mp3Not only is there alot of great music this week, but I took to heart a suggestion that I try to improve the compression rate on the mp3. Being just another picky deadhead myself, I'm very concerned to have the music sound as good as possible - please let me know if you notice the difference on this week's Deadpod. This does increase the file size, and there are tradeoffs, but it may well be worth the cost. The other big news this week is that starting next week, KOPN, 89.5 FM, Community radio begins its Fall pledge drive. I'm trying to get a head start on this by asking you for your support for the Deadpod. I do hope you'll consider contributing to the Deadpod and ensuring our continuance. I wanted to let you know this was starting this week because I have an opportunity to send you a very special thank you for supporting the Deadpod - a copy of the brand new release "Rocking the Cradle - Egypt 78" CD/DVD combination set that releases on September 30th! This two cd/dvd set chronicles the historic shows in Egypt in 1978 - including 95 minutes of concert footage - and I'm so happy to be able to offer this to my listeners who contribute at a $60 level or above. I wanted to get a headstart on this as I'm going to be getting some surgery done later in October and would like to take care of this before all that goes down.. so at any rate, if you'd like to get a copy of this wonderful set, just contribute to the Deadpod during this big membership drive. You can click the 'Make a Donation' button on the left hand side of the page here: http://deadshow.blogspot.comThank YOU! Whew! I hope the Deadpod and all the news isn't TOO big! but then again, I always loved the BIG sound of seeing the Dead and I think you'll enjoy this week's show.. Be well and thanks for picking us up!

This week we have a great new soundboard of a show from a year that's often under appreciated - 1980. This comes to us from August 29th, 1980, when the boys played the Spectrum in Philladelphia. The first set, which we'll hear this week, starts off with a rockin' Alabama Getaway->Promised Land opener. The band proceeds to play a really high energy twelve song first set, nicely played and sounding like they were really listening to one another. Brent fits in very nicely here, as he's really found his spot by now. I really enjoy the Big River, and Row Jimmy, and check out the crazy set closing Deal!!! This week marks the start of KOPN's spring pledge drive, so I am asking for your help in allowing our community radio station, and this podcast, to remain on the air. Any contribution, no matter what, will help to keep us going. I'm working on securing some CDs to use as premiums to thank you for your support, and will announce them when and if they're finalized. But in the meantime, I hope you'll consider clicking on the contribute now button and helping us out with your contribution. If you prefer to phone in your support, you can reach the station at (573) 874-1139. Thanks!!
