Label: Atco 6592Year: 1968Condition: M-Price: $25.00This is the terrific original version of the song the Black Crowes took to the top 40 in 1991. Incidentally, back in 1968, "Amen" was originally the plug side, which is probably why "Hard To Handle" didn't get much airplay back then (though it did turn out to be the "A" side in terms of sales and chart action). Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Atco Records factory sleeve. It grades close to Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

Jam Notes: One of our best performances. Lisa Timberlake guested for a rendition of Feelin' Good. Justin did a number on the set list and made it feel and flow completely different. There were quite a few people in from the surrounding area for the first two sets but then it tapered out by the last set and we went home. This set/jam is sourced from the room microphone Ben setup and is not based off of house sound.

As we come to the end of the Days Between, and reflect on what Jerry gave us I thought it appropriate to present a classic show from when the band was young and ferocious. This comes to us from August 6, 1971 at the Hollywood Palladium. Long considered a classic, I'm sure you'll agree if you haven't yet been fortunate enough to hear this performance. This first set contains no clunkers.. I think each of these songs is a top-notch rendition, but for sure I have to point out 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Cumberland Blues'.. but the highlight here is clearly the great version of 'Hard to Handle'..   This week's Deadpod features a historic performance - it occurred on the night the band was 'busted down in New Orleans' - January 30, 1970 at The Warehouse in New Orleans, Louisiana. Also historic as it was the last show that Tom Constantin played in the Dead.. but aside from that this is a fine show and I think you'll enjoy hearing this very good tape..  The tape is missing part of the opening Casey Jones, nevertheless good vibes here and on the following 'Me & My Uncle'.. 'Black Peter' is wonderful.. I also think the 'High Time in this set is absolutely perfect. 'Cumberland Blues' is hot.. hotter than you think that song should be ;) and is there a better song to pull out here than 'Easy Wind'?  The 'Cryptical Envelopment>Other One>Cryptical' is hard driving Dead!  They do a sweet transition into 'Cosmic Charlie' - sadly this one is cut as well... .   Grateful Dead The Warehouse New Orleans, LA 1/30/1970 - Friday One - 1:33:00      Casey Jones [#1:27][0:47] Me And My Uncle [3:09][0:29] Black Peter [9:51][0:15] Hard To Handle [5:26][0:05]%[0:07] China Cat Sunflower [3:13] > Jam [2:34] > I Know You Rider [4:19] > High Time [6:25][0:15] Cumberland Blues [6:21][0:04]%[0:03] Easy Wind [10:13][0:12]%[0:10] Mama Tried [2:36] > Good Lovin' [1:49] > Drums [0:40] > Good Lovin' [5:26][0:16] Cryptical Envelopment [2:17] > Drums [5:22] > The Other One [9:41] > Cryptical Envelopment [9:10] > Cosmic Charlie [0:34#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012624.mp3  Thank you for your kind support!  The days are getting brighter!

This week the Deadpod travels to the East Coast for a show that took place around 2 months after last week's show. This is the early show from the Fillmore East in NYC on January 2, 1970. This is quite a nice tape, don't let the few seconds at the beginning fool you.  The 'Mason's Children' opener is a good representation of this somewhat odd song. 'Black Peter' is quite extended, much more than usual for this song. 'Hard to Handle' is explosive as usual. The boys really hit their stride here with the 'Cryptical Envelopment>Drums>Other One'. I quite enjoy the 'Cosmic Charlie' that follows but that's a tune I thought they never played often enough :)  I hope you enjoy it..   Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 1/2/1970 - Friday Early - 59:51:00     Intro (1) [1:05] > Mason's Children [6:09][1:34] Casey Jones [4:17][0:12] Black Peter [10:41][1:18] Mama Tried [2:32] > Hard To Handle [4:43][0:15] Cumberland Blues [5:33][0:16] Cryptical Envelopment [1:57] > Drums [3:53] > The Other One [10:34] > Cryptical Envelopment [2:04] > Cosmic Charlie [6:46#]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111723.mp3 Thanks for your kind support, we couldn't bring you the Deadpod without your help.

And we went out and jammed out for the families who were visiting their loved ones. The reception was mixed. On some songs, it seemed like they absolutely loved it. On other songs, they didn't seem to notice we were there. Part of what's going on with the recording is that there was a lot of wind that day, and the recorder is really far away from the band. So I had to run it through a low-pass filter to remove the wind noise and then boost the heck out of the audio to make it audible. That being said, I think we played very well on this gig. It's the first off-planet automobile ride. Rumor has it that sometime during the show, Jerry stopped playing, pointed to the moon, and said, “just think, right now there are men sleeping on THAT” Confession, I listened to almost the entire show and was not able to locate that moment so I cannot confirm Jerry said it, but it sounds like something he might say and either way is just another cool Dead story to pass along. INTRO:                Sugaree                           Track No. 3                           Start – 1:14                            Sugaree" is a song with lyrics by long-time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and music by guitaristJerry Garcia.[1] It was written for Jerry Garcia's first solo album Garcia, which was released in January 1972. As with the songs on the rest of the album, Garcia plays every instrument himself except drums, played by Bill Kreutzmann, including acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and an electric guitar played through a Leslie speaker. Released as a single from the Garcia album, "Sugaree" peaked at #94 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1972 and was Garcia's only single ever on that chart.[2]The song was first performed live by the Grateful Dead on July 31, 1971, at the Yale Bowl at Yale University,Even though it was on Jerry's solo album, it was clearly a Dead song from the start and here it is debuted by the Dead six months before the Garcia album's release. Maybe not the best version ever, but it is the first. Ultimately played 361 times by the Dead. Last played on July 8, 1995, the penultimate Dead show Always one of good buddy Mikey's favorite Dead songs, “What's shaking Sugaree?”.  Shout out to Mikey, Alex, Andy, Lynn, Harold who just saw Tedeschi Truck this past weekend at Red Rocks.  My wife and I had to miss it this year, but I know they all rocked out.  And, they were joined by Lori and Monte, more good Chicago friends, and Lori was part of the group at the Joanie Jam with Judy and Andy.  So lots of great musical cross relationships developing all the time.  THAT IS WHY WE GO TO SHOWS!   SHOW #1:                   Mr. Charlie                                    Track No. 4                                    Start – 1:15             This is also the breakout version of this song.  It was played a total of 50 times after its debut on 7/31/71 in New Haven, the same show at which Sugaree debuted. It was played at all 22 shows of the Europe '72 tour, including its last performance on May 26, 1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, the last show of that famous tour. Lyrics by Robert Hunter, music by Pigpen.  It was Pig's song and as his time in the band dwindled, so did some of his tunes.  No post-Pig resurrection of the song by the band.Never released on a studio album, there are rumors of a planned album following Workingman's and American Beauty that would have included this song as well as Bertha, He's Gone, Loser, Brown Eyed Women, Ramble on Rose, Tennessee Jed, The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion), etc.  Might have even been enough tunes for a double album. Story is that the Dead abandoned it when they decided to get out of their Warner Bros. record deal. SHOW #2:          Hard to Handle                             Track No. 12                             Start – 1:06           "Hard to Handle" is a 1968 song written by American soul singer Otis Redding along with Al Bell and Allen Jones. Originally recorded by Redding, it was released in 1968 as the B-side to "Amen" (shortly after the singer's sudden death in 1967). The song also appears on the 1968 album The Immortal Otis Redding. Redding's version reached number 38 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 51 on the pop chart.[1]American rock band the Black Crowes covered the song for their 1990 debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, reaching number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their rendition.Hard To Handle was performed by the Grateful Dead about 90 times between March 15, 1969 at the Black and White Ball, opened the show with it (The ball is the Bay Area's largest black-tie street party and a tradition since 1956 - a night for high society and just plain folks to mingle in gowns and tuxedoes around Civic Center Plaza to listen to music. ) and August 1971. It was subsequently performed only twice, on December 30 and 31, 1982, with Etta James taking the vocals and support from the Tower of Power horns.Another fun Pig lead that, like most of his other songs, died with him. SHOW #3:                  Sugar Magnolia                                    Track No. 24                                    3:10 – 4:23Still relatively new in the Dead's repertoire, I like the musical jam in this version and so does the crowd. We all know the lyrics but it is this kind of jamming that made this a Dead standard and favorite among Deadheads.  This version is still early enough that it appears in the middle of the second set, not yet having moved to its almost always spot as a second set closer.  Always sad when they get to the obvious set closer, but when it was Sugar Mag we all felt a lot better.   Notes from Deadheads mentioned this as one of the highlights of the show. SHOW #4:                  Darkness Jam                                    Track No. 28                                    0:56 – 2:06the 'Darkness' jam from the 1969 Youngbloods song, Darkness, Darkness which was done a few times in 1970; the most well-known version is in the 9/19/70 Not Fade Away where it's very clear. (They also do the China Cat riff in that NFA, which they did frequently (and at greater length) in the fall of 1971.). Played 4 times by the Dead in concert.  This is the LAST one. Darkness Darkness - Darkness, Darkness" is a song written by Jesse Colin Young in 1969, which has been covered by many artists. Young's band The Youngbloods released a version on their 1969 album Elephant Mountain. They released a version of the song as a single twice: in 1969, which reached #124 on the Billboard chart,[1] and in 1970, which reached #86 on the chart.[2] One of the various themed jams played by the Dead in their early years also including:Feelin' Groovy Jam - is basically four chords based on the 1966 Simon & Garfunkel song, and was frequently done in Dark Stars from '69-'72.Tighten Up Jam - The Tighten Up jam was a very common Latin-style jam theme in 1970. It's often called a proto-Eyes jam since Weir plays two repeating jazzy chords that are rhythmically similar to the opening of Eyes of the World; but they were commonly thought to be from Archie Bell & the Drells' 1968 tune.Mind Left Body Jam:      The Mind Left Body jam originated in the Planet Earth Rock n Roll Orchestra (PERRO) sessions (The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra (PERRO) is a nickname given to some artists who recorded together in the early 1970s.[1] They were predominantly members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young .[2] ), where we can hear an early, faster version of the four descending chords. Paul Kantner took this riff for his 1973 song 'Your Mind Has Left Your Body,' which Garcia played pedal steel on. Garcia in turn adapted it into a Grateful Dead theme, which first showed up on occasion in '72, but started regularly entering the jams in fall '73. It added a transcendental feeling to many shows up through '74Spanish Jam:       Weir based the Spanish Jam on the song 'Solea' on Miles Davis' album Sketches of Spain, sometime in late '67 when the Dead started recording Anthem of the Sun. As it was, a little bit of the Spanish Jam actually got on the album, in the form of a short Davis-flavored trumpet break from Phil in the middle of Born Cross-Eyed (after the verse, "Think I'll come back here again, every now and then, from time to time"). For a moment, it seems like Garcia and the band are about to break into the Spanish Jam, but they quickly cut back to the song.... OUTRO:       Uncle John's Band                        Track No. 30                        1:28 – 2:44             An early version of an all time classic.  Already a crowd favorite, clapping, sing along.  Can't go wrong with an Uncle John's Band at the end of a show – actually closed out with Johnny B. Goode – no encore.  Other great stories of this show at Yale, runs in with the cops, gate crashers, gallons of electric Kool Aid at the gates.  Just another typical Dead show, but at one of the country's most prestigious schools.  Even the Ivies loved the Dead.      Still working on stories John Mayer says goodbye:            “These tours with @deadandcompany exist on an almost otherworldly plane – everyone, on stage and in the crowd, meets up in this shared dream, and on the last night, after the final note is struck, we leave it all on the stage. We bow, we hug, we share our love for one another and then… we disappear. I fly through the dead of night and wake up at home, where my ears ring, my heart sings, and I'm left with this mix of fatigue, joy, accomplishment, and deep appreciation for what I was able to be a part of,” Mayer shared. “I can feel the connected, collective experience of thousands of others who wake up feeling the same. I'll never get over the profound beauty and uniqueness of this, and we'll never in our lifetime see the likes of @bobweir@mickeyhart and @billkreutzmann, playing beyond all perceived limitations and expectations. It's nothing short of remarkable. Thank you one and all for allowing me a seat on this transcendent ride. ”     “Dead & Company is still a band – we just don't know what the next show will be,” Mayer wrote on social media. “I speak for us all when I say that I look forward to being shown the next shaft of light… I know we will all move towards it together.”

Follow him on Twitter at @AndrewFinkMI.Andrew's Music Pick: Otis ReddingLadies and gentlemens, we are so happy to be here with the Love Crowd tonight because we gotta gotta gotta gotta turn it loose about soul giant Otis Redding, a man whose recorded legacy looms large not just in the history of soul and R&B but in modern popular music as a whole. Redding is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest R&B vocalists of all time, and as a "soul giant," but what is far too less appreciated about him is that he was the first truly modern African-American popular musician, a man self-consciously carving out a sound, pushing sonic boundaries and the traditions of his genre, and working self-consciously to craft albums as complete statements at a time when absolutely no other black artist in the country outside of jazz was thinking along those lines.Redding's early singles established him, simply on their own terms, as an early Sixties soul great. ("Pain In My Heart," "Mr. Pitiful," "That's How Strong My Love Is," "I've Been Loving You Long," and "Security" are the sorts of timeless Redding soul belters that went immediately into the working books of countless English R&B bands, notably including The Rolling Stones.) His mid-Sixties albums demonstrated that he, alone among all major soul/R&B artists of his era -- long before Stevie or Marvin moved for their artistic freedom -- had a sound and vision that belonged to something more than a series of singles. And the music he was making before he suddenly died (in a December 1967 plane crash while flying between shows) was mutating both into chart-topping contemplative folk-pop ("(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," his only #1 single) and forward-looking hard funk ("Hard To Handle"). Four albums of posthumous Redding material were released between 1968 and 1970. Much of it is great work. But one can only imagine where Otis would actually have been by 1970. He was growing so quickly as an artist.Join us this week, as we open with a long discussion of Stax/Volt and the nature of its "sound," and then engage in a celebration of one of the greatest popular musical artists of the Sixties -- and perhaps the most heartbreaking loss of modern musical history, in terms of what we likely missed when that plane went down on a cold winter's day in December 1967. Hail to The King of Soul.

In this episode, Scott and Vince address the critical, and less-talked-about, issue of anxiety and mental health struggles. Stress is everywhere in our lives—it is not limited to the office, and sometimes, we bring the stresses of work home with us and they intensify the stresses at home. The pandemic added additional stresses in the form of isolation and depression and that has continued for some in their new remote work environments. Mental health struggles are something that affects a lot of people and this is complicated by the fact that only a few percent of people want to talk about their mental health. Through personal narratives and real workplace scenarios, our hosts share how to: Effectively communicate and help people who are struggling.  Be a good listener and offer a helping hand.  Engage people who want to be engaged  Leverage therapy as a resource And most importantly, how to build and practice empathy. If you know someone in your organization who is struggling with their mental health, your role is not to just inform HR. Instead, it is your responsibility to recognize, understand, and offer ways to help them. ABOUT OUR HOSTS: To learn more about Scott De Long, Ph.D., and Vince Moiso, MBA, please visit

Featuring the complete shows from 8/7/71 in San Diego, CA and 8/24/71 in Chicago, IL, along with snippets of 8/6/71 in Hollywood, CA, it's a fascinating peek into the evolving nature of The Dead on the cusp of their 1972 renaissance period.Disc One features the complete first set from 8/24 + the “Truckin'” Set II Opener. Disc One is highlighted by a brilliant “Hard To Handle,” making its Dick's Picks debut. On Disc Two we hear a tight take on “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” plus a stunning “Sing Me Back Home.” The highlight might very well be the incredible jam out of “Going Down The Road Feelin' Bad” which then segues into “Johnny B Goode.”Disc Three picks up the thread in Chicago and features a gorgeous cut of Pigpen's “Empty Pages,” alongside a still-in-progress “Brown-Eyed Women.” Later, “Not Fade Away -> GDTRFB -> NFA” shines in the fusion between country jammin' and punkish psychedelia. Disc Four closes the set with a segment from the 8/6 show in Hollywood and features some of the only improv of the set in the way of “The Other One -> Me & My Uncle -> The Other One.” A haunting “Morning Dew” leads to a 25min “Lovelight” closer which shines a light on the wonders of Pigpen in the twilight of his life. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. Pigpen does a wonderful 'Next Time You See Me', and 'Hard to Handle' (although it has a very tragic tape flip that loses the end of the song). Episode Summary: Lisa Appelo and I talk about how to hang onto threadbare hope when our circumstances are too hard to handle. Our guest today speaks from her own personal experience. When her husband died suddenly, Lisa was left alone to walk herself and her seven children through loss and grief. She shares what she learned. Quotables from the episode: When life felt incredibly bad, I needed to know life could be good again. Sometimes we have to let go of the life we wanted and take hold of the life in front of us. It's okay to feel our emotions, but they do a poor job telling us the truth. Utter dependence on God isn't what we want, but it's where God designed us to be. Loss revealed where I had misplaced my hope and I learned to hang onto Biblical hope when my emotions were screaming different. God does give us too much to handle so that we will learn to depend on him and relinquish the myths of self-control and self-sufficiency. When we become helplessly dependent on God we will see God is faithful and that He will come through. I've seen that being in a place of helpless dependence on God is the best place to be. Even in the unknown, we can thank God. God doesn't have a plan B! He already knows how He is going to see you through! The 3 best words you can say to someone going through a difficult time is “You're not alone.” And they aren't…even when it feels like they are alone, God is with them and will not forsake them. Even as life feels better now, as I'm used to the pace, weight and isolation of single parenting following loss, I never want to forget I'm utterly dependent on God for wisdom, guidance, provision and so much more. I might be facing a scary future, but I'd learned God's promises would hold there. We can daily anchor in God's Word to let Him refocus our perspective, renew our hope and exchange our emotions for His truth. We can remember God's past faithfulness and His character. We can tender our heart to God so that we don't waste the suffering. We can look for God's good hand all around us, which is such a boost to our faith that God is working even in painful circumstances. For the one who feels underwater in circumstances that are too much to handle, I'd tell them to look to God to do what we cannot. We can't fix a broken heart or force an outcome. But in that place, we can enter a trust relationship God designed for us. We can chisel out idols of control and comfort we've polished and learn to trust in the Lord with all our heart.  Scripture References: Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Psalm 46:1 (ESV) “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Deuteronomy 33:26-27 (NIV) “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides across the heavens to help you, and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Recommended Resources:  Life Can Be Good Again: Putting Your World Back Together After It All Falls Apart by Lisa Appelo, Releases 4-19-22, Pre-Order Now! Success is hard to handle...isn't that the truth? The old saying "new levels, new devils" has rung true since the beginning of time. Don speaks about how to navigate new and sustained successes. Very practical and tangible advice on how to stay on track with new successes. Another one of Don's "Super Friday" talks! If you are local to Middle TN be sure to check out Don's Super Friday Speaking events every second Tuesday of the month at Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro from 9:45-11:00.
