The Wednesday 5ish digs what Ryan Day said at Big Ten Media Days regarding going for another national championship ("we're not 'defending' anything; we're attacking"). And is also intrigued that the College Sports Commission took all of three weeks to back off its stance and allow collectives to do their thing in the NIL space. Dave Biddle and Matt Baxendell have much more. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Happy Friday! Dave Biddle is in with us again helping us close out the week. It's Day 2 of The Open Championship. There is an alleged statement that's been released by the CEO who got busted at the Coldplay concert for having an affair, so we determine if it's legit or not. We play Overs and Unders. We review Adam Schefter's comments on the Quinshon Judkins situation from Wednesday. We play Under Pressure. Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing joins the show. Somehow a conversation breaks out about Max Klare possibly getting too much hype this offseason. Mizzou HC Eliah Drinkwitz poses the thought of a 30-team CFP, and Rothman is kind of digging it. Jensen Lewis joins the show for Chin Music. And we Tell the Truth.
Happy Thursday! Dave Biddle is hanging out with us. Whoever organized The ESPYs did a questionable job. The Open Championship begins today. Blue Jackets radio play-by-play voice Bob McElligott joins the show. Arch Manning is very levelheaded for someone who you really would not think would be levelheaded. Is there more pressure on Arch or Sayin in Week 1? Adam King joins us from South Carolina. Ryan Day joined The Bobby Carpenter Show, and we listen to a couple bites. Bengals radio color analyst Dave Lapham joins the show after his induction into the Ring of Honor. And did you see what happened at the Coldplay concert last night???
Ohio State has new coordinators on each side of the ball in 2025 with Brian Hartline taking the reins on offense and Matt Patricia leading the defense. Can you be still basking in the glow of the national championship, while simultaneously being concerned with Ohio State's recruiting efforts? Well, we would not recommend it, but we understand some Buckeye fans are nonplussed about OSU's recruiting efforts this cycle, particularly on the defensive line. Is there reason for concern, or are these fears overblown? Also, friend of the program Connor Stalions went on an unhinged rant while responding to comments from TCU coach Sonny Dykes. We're here for the drama. Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin tackle that and much more on the Monday 5ish. Well, it did not take long for the College Sports Commission's "NIL Go" clearinghouse to make waves. According to the director of Utah State's collective, Dalton Forsythe, "nearly 100 percent of collective-backed NIL deals are being denied, regardless of size or structure. The College Sports Commission has taken the position that collectives cannot serve a 'valid business purpose' — a standard that was never clearly communicated before implementation." On today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss this situation and what might be coming down the pike. If an athlete's NIL deal is rejected -- and he challenges that ruling in a court of law -- the athlete would likely prevail, right? Or does the House settlement actually have teeth, allowing the clearinghouse to reject any and all deals from collectives? We also discuss how much Ohio State will miss Will Howard this season at quarterback -- particularly his ability in the RPO game and his leadership -- and much more. The 12-team College Football Playoff era will last all of two seasons. When the CFP expands in 2026, which format would be best for the sport overall? Which format would be best for Ohio State? Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith had very high praise for Julian Sayin in a story published by The Athletic recently. Smith went as far to say that the redshirt freshman quarterback "can make every throw" and that it is "going to be scary for opponents." This reminded us of what some of OSU's players said about Sayin while at the NFL Combine this past winter. On today's show, Dave Biddle discusses this development, looks ahead to defensive tackle recruit Jamir Perez's "big announcement" this Friday and much more. The media knew Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork was holding a press conference on Thursday. What we did not know is that he would hold court for well over an hour and would cover so many interesting topics that we almost lost count. He discussed the ever-changing landscape of NIL in college sports -- including which OSU sports will receive money made available from the House settlement -- he talked about the new, streamlined NIL organization at Ohio State called Buckeye Sports Group, he discussed OSU trying to play more home night games, he went in-depth on Ohio Stadium renovations and much more. Happy Tuesday! Oz the Mentalist made another appearance, this time on ESPN's Get Up. Matty Ice isn't falling for it. TLC is trying to crack down how much it would cost for Oz to perform live in our studio. Dave Biddle of 247 Sports' Bucknuts joins the show. Trouble is brewing in Cincinnati. An impromptu discussion about which athletes we hate the most turns into a brutally honest conversation about Angel Reese. A typically rock solid ESPN personality just issued a spicy take that we think is pretty uninformed. Did the Browns really have one of the three worst offseasons in the NFL? An announcement was made live during the show, but Rothman told everyone that this was going to happen like six weeks ago. Is it inappropriate for radio personalities to refer to athletes as "losers?" Terry McLaurin is disgruntled in Washington. And we Tell the Truth.
Recruiting is of course heating up entering the second week of June. Ohio State landed running back Favour Akih from nearby Delaware Hayes on Sunday, giving the Buckeyes 14 prospects in their 2026 class thus far. What do we think about this class so far? Also, Ohio State's basketball program could not finish the deal with coveted wing transfer Darrion Williams, leaving them still with a gaping hole on their roster. Ohio State's season-opener against visiting Texas is slated for a noon kick. This has a lot of people upset, including our own Matt Baxendell. Jim Knowles spoke about his departure from Ohio State and what led up to it during a wide-ranging interview with Heather Dinich of ESPN on Tuesday. What did we make of Knowles' comments? And is there a chance things worked out well in this situation for all parties involved? Ohio State is very happy with the hiring of Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator. Penn State is happy about poaching Knowles from the Buckeyes. And Knowles is happy to be in his home state making north of $3 million per year. Yes, there's a very good chance it worked out well for all sides, but it's still an interesting story. And keep in mind we just heard one side of the story in Dinich's piece. Also on today's show, what might the race for the Big Ten championship look like this year? What about the national title? How are those Heisman odds looking? Stop us if you have heard this one before: Brian Hartline landed a top wide receiver recruit for Ohio State. Yes, the best in the business at recruiting -- and developing -- WRs struck again on Sunday. The Buckeyes received a commitment from Kayden Dixon-Wyatt who is ranked as the No. 6 WR in the country and the No. 59 overall prospect in the 2026 class. Ohio State has the No. 3 class in the country in the 247Sports Composite rankings, and the Buckeyes have the second-best average player rating. Dixon-Wyatt becomes the fourth wideout in OSU's class and is the third-highest ranked player in the class, behind WR Chris Henry Jr. and safety Blaine Bradford. Also on today's show, Dave Biddle and Dan Rubin are going to take a close look inside the trenches for Ohio State this season. In quite a twist from last year at this time, the offensive line looks strong, but there are big concerns about defensive tackle depth. If we had to pick, which one of these guys will play the most snaps as the top backup DT this season: Tywone Malone, Eric Mensah, Jason Moore or Will Smith Jr.? Who would you choose? Unless something drastically changes, it does not appear as though Ohio State will add a defensive tackle via the transfer portal. As head coach Ryan Day said earlier this week, the Buckeyes have been looking, but they are not going to add a DT just for the sake of doing it. Does this basically mean Ohio State's roster is set for 2025? That is one of the subjects tackled by Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle on the Friday 5ish. Ohio State came within one pick of tying the all-time NFL Draft record over the weekend, but "only" 14 Buckeyes were drafted. We were pleasantly surprised in the first round when four OSU players came off the board, the most of any program this year. We also liked seeing three Buckeyes drafted in the second round. But then some strange things began to happen. Jack Sawyer falling to the fourth round? No one saw that coming. Will Howard falling to the sixth round and being drafted behind quarterbacks such as Dillon Gabriel and Kyle McCord? Seth McLaughlin going undrafted? Is the Rimington Award winner even allowed to be undrafted? Apparently so. But hey, it was still an excellent draft for the Buckeyes and we are going to talk about it on today's show.
