Well, that was quite the bombshell. Thursday came the announcement that USC and UCLA would be joining the Big Ten, beginning with the 2024-25 academic year. Are we surprised by this news? Or did we think something like this was coming down the pike? Also, what does this mean for the Big Ten going forward? Will they stop at 16 teams, or create a superconference with 20 or more teams? And if they add four more programs, who are the most-likely candidates? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that and more about the Trojans and Bruins becoming members of the Big Ten on the Friday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
If it's Thursday, it means Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter giving the latest insights on Ohio State football recruiting. Among the topics on today's show: * Bill put in a Crystal Ball pick for the Buckeyes to flip 4-star cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt from Texas Tech. * How good is the crop of talent from the state of Ohio in 2024, according to Mark? * Do the Buckeyes have a legit chance of landing the No. 1 safety in the country, Caleb Downs? What are Mark's thoughts on the Buckeyes' most recent 2023 commit, 4-star corner Kayin Lee? * How does Dylan Raiola compare to Arch Manning? Ohio State is on a hot streak on the recruiting trail. Meanwhile, Michigan is in a downward spiral. The Wolverines were already struggling big time in recruiting for 2023 and then last night they lost their top-rated recruit in their class, 4-star linebacker Raylen Wilson. Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, take a look at the Buckeyes' recruiting efforts on the defensive side of the ball, and we also take several of your questions. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Last week it was an epic haul on offense, specifically wide receiver. This week? How about some defense? Can we interest you in nationally-ranked defensive backs? Monday brought the commitment of Georgia 4-star cornerback Kayin Lee. But the week is far from over. Who could join him? We discuss the onslaught of positivity and wax poetic on names like John Walker, Jermaine Matthews, Tackett Curtis, Darron Reed and more. Duane Long is here. You need to be as well. Oh what a week it was for Ohio State and Brian Hartline last week as the Buckeyes landed a trio of highly-rated wide receivers in consecutive days. First it was 5-star Carnell Tate (the nation's No. 3 WR per the 247Sports Composite), then it was 5-star Brandon Inniss (No. 2 WR) and wrapping up the three-day odyssey was high 4-star Noah Rogers (No. 9 WR). That's a total of 14 stars in three days. Not too shabby. Hartline continues to prove he is the best recruiter in the country among all position coaches, and he spoke to NFL Network over the weekend about his recruiting philosophy. We will touch on that on today's show as well. But what about defensive recruiting, you ask? Today's show will also take a look at a trio of 4-star defensive recruits who took official visits to Ohio State this past weekend. They include cornerback Kayin Lee, defensive tackle John Walker and DT/DE Darron Reed. The good news for the Buckeyes regarding each of them? The Dean of Ohio State Football Recruiting, Bill Kurelic, has put in a Crystal Ball for OSU to land them. Doesn't mean the fight is over for any of them -- it's not -- but it's trending very well for the Scarlet & Gray. All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo. We've landed on a word to sum up Ohio State's recent recruiting efforts: 'Unfair.' Thankfully we mean 'unfair' to the Buckeyes' trail competition. Wednesday marked the third day in a row an elite wide receiver joined Ohio State's Class of 2023 haul. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to discuss the addition of Noah Rogers to previous WR pledges Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss. But this show offers so much more. We discussed a veritable who's who of elites as the biggest recruiting weekend of year in Columbus approaches. You want a few names? Monday was a jaunt-worthy experience for Ohio State. Yet another 5-star receiver chose to school under Brian Hartline, Ryan Day et al. Carnell Tate will be a Buckeye. What if Duane Long was in control of Ohio State recruiting? First, the offensive and defensive lines would be incredible. Should college football players have the right to declare for the NFL draft, but then return to school if they so choose a few weeks later? Duane Long is here to shed light on those names and a whole lot more. * An Ohio eighth grader (Class of 2026) was offered? Yep ... and you know the name. * Nigel Smith came from Texas and impressed. Does it frustrate you when Ohio State wears alternate uniforms, especially in games against Michigan and Penn State? Well, you came to the right place today because Dave Biddle is not a fan of the Buckeyes wearing alt unis and he goes into detail as to why. First and foremost, it's because OSU is elite, and has the best uniform/helmet combination in college football. Notice how Alabama never wears alternate uniforms? Also on the agenda: * What can fans expect from the Buckeyes' linebackers in 2022? * Who will be OSU's captains this season? * What sports are good to watch in the summertime as we wait for football season? * Could Ohio State be overconfident heading in the Notre Dame game? Or is this team locked in mentally? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with roughly 100 members of the Columbus business community on Thursday to discuss NIL and what the Buckeyes need to keep up with the arms race. What they need, according to Day, is $13 million per year just to keep the roster in tact and prevent players from transferring to other programs. That's right, the $13M figure doesn't even include recruiting. It's just for the current roster. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to give his thoughts on that, the OSU-Penn State game not being a white out for a change, and whether Marvin Harrison Jr. will go over or under 1,200 receiving yards this season. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to talk a lot about the Fisher-Saban feud, including of course the hilarity of it, but also whether both men were actually speaking the truth. Bottom line? If you like dramatic movies or soap operas, your favorite one pales in comparison to what we saw yesterday. Also on the docket, which true freshmen can help Ohio State this season? There won't be nearly as many true frosh that play in 2022 compared to 2021, but a few will need to round out the two deep and perhaps step up if injuries arise. Who are 10 true freshmen in particular that we feel will not redshirt and will at least be able to contribute to the Buckeyes' championship-winning efforts this fall? We break it all down.
