For... kindness. Yes Kindness. It's turned into a cliche that it's 'Easy' to give kindness. It's been a challenging year, and the kindest amongst us have had a hard time too. Maybe, kindness is easy, but I also say that it is a decision. That is where it gets hard.

Welcome to Episode 13 of One Step Beyond. This time around, we discuss ‘Still Running: The Art of Meditation in Motion,’ a new book by Vanessa Zuisei Goddard. I first met Zuisei in 2006, at the Zen Mountain Monastery in Mount Tremper, in the Catskills, where I was taught how to sit zazen - the form of meditation practiced there - by Zuisei herself. But Zuisei is also a runner, and for all that she has spent much of her life sitting zazen, she has never stopped moving. I would often see her running on the local roads and knew that that she held ‘running retreats’ at ZMM - and yet we never talked in detail about our shared love of this physical exercise. In 2019, after two decades at ZMM, Zuisei resumed lay life, moving to New York City to become a writer and teacher. And when ‘Still Running’ was published this summer by Shambhala – with a front cover endorsement by ultra-marathon legend Scott Jurek - I knew instinctively that I had to read it and bring her on this show.Zuisei’s wonderful little book is extra helpful because while it discusses Buddhism, each chapter ends with a physical practice that applies to anyone and everyone, of any domination and for almost any physical endeavor. For One Step Beyond, we spoke by phone, discussing life in a Buddhist monastery and beyond, and more specifically, the practices she describes in her book. You will hear me undertake and report back on some of these practices. We also discuss the tradition of extreme running within Buddhism, as evidenced in the isolated Gompa Monks of Tibet, and the Marathon Monks of Japan. This gives me a reason to dig out an LP of Tibetan Ritual Music that I had owned for 30 years and somehow never opened; perhaps it was just waiting for the perfect moment. You can find Still Running at all good book shops or through the publisher, Shambhala. If you order online, please consider supporting your local independent store in the process; you can do so in the US by using Bookshop.org Zuisei can be found at VanessaZuiseiGoddard.com, and on Instagram and Facebook as zuiseigoddardThe Zen Mountain Monastery, which has been offering online programs in 2020 during the pandemic, is at mro.org.The incidental music in this episode is:‘Offering to the Savior Gompo’ and ‘Invocation of Gompo from the LP Tibetan Ritual Music by Lamas and Monks, recorded in Sikkim in 1961 for the Lyrichord label. The 'Easy, Light, Smooth, Fast' mantra I cite is from Barefoot Ted as referenced in Born To Run. There's lots of misconceptions about mindfulness - some people think it's about clearing your mind, thinking positively or that it takes a lot of practice to see the benefits. Check out our latest label releases + free downloads on our Bandcamp page. Californian producer Coflo has been frequently catching our attention over the last year or so with his soulful, organic house jams. Receiving major support from Osunlade and his Yoruba Records family, his knack for expansive melody and warm groove puts him among the lineage of great American deep/soulful/afro house producers, and we're very happy to have him share his vision on our podcast. *How would you describe your sound?* To be honest, I don't think I have a sound. I make whatever I feel like making and I collaborate with whomever I make friends with and wants to do some creative ish'. People always want a box to genre-fy things. I tell people that I make American house music. I am an American just doing my tiny part to keep the beautiful sounds and dance of house music culture going. I tend to be drawn to sounds and ideas that are of the African diaspora — be it Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban or Afro-American. The music I fell in love with, at its core, is black American music.  So that is what my sound is. I have a massive amount of pride in being raised in house music culture, and it feels good to share whatever "sound" comes out. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The influence on what I make can change like the wind. So many different types of art inspire me to make music. I draw a lot of inspiration from movement arts and visual arts. I almost never start with a blank slate. Something always enters my mind's eye visually and then turns into sound eventually. I can easily cite two people for the influence on me continuing to create music. Those two people would be Ron Trent and Osunlade. Both of them have carved a path that many should feel blessed to walk on. Their dedication and longevity to something that is ultimately about people and the art is incredibly inspiring. I study all of their tunes intensely.  *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*Not really sure it means something profound to me. As this series is about sharing the producer/artists work, I just picked songs in the moment. A lot of what I do in art is improvised, be it dance or music etc. I have a huge back catalog of music and just about every song means something fairly profound to me. I make a lot of music and there are no favourites. I tried to pick tunes that may flow nicely together and touch on a range of ideas. I could easily put together a mix of my songs that have extremes, but it didn't feel fitting for just an hour long mix. To be sentimental, this mix does end with my first 12" single, 'Easy' with my close friend Lady C. Tracklist: Coflo - Beija-Flor [Catch The Ghost Records] Coflo - Playground Samba [Ocha Records] Free Association - Polyrhythm Jizm (Coflo Edit) [BBE Music] Po-lar-i-ty - Nawlins (Coflo remix) [Yoruba Records] Evar After - Pocket (Coflo Deep Remix) [Merecumbe Records] Coflo - Stress Relief (original Mix) [Ocha Records] QVLN - Keepin On (Coflo & Tomahawk Bang Remix) [Ocha Records] Coflo - Rescue Him [Ocha Records] Coflo - Lux (Alternative Mix) [Local Talk] Coflo & Lady C - Easy [Ocha Records]

Hello Friends!  This week, a show that caught my fancy that for some reason has never been featured here on the Deadpod, but certainly deserves to be..  This comes to us from November 1, 1979 and teh Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY.  I think the band always enjoyed the NY area and this is I think, quite a fine and energetic outing.  This recording starts with an audience patch in 'Jack Straw' but don't let that put you off, its a fine soundboard recording with just a few patches thrown in. Brent and Jerry's interplay really shines on this show, and the band effortlessly shift gears here in the first set from rockers like 'New Minglewood Blues' to more soulful numbers like 'Candyman' and 'Peggy-O' (that latter is  an exceptionally fine version here). 'Looks Like Rain' shines too, and I quite enjoy the Brent offering 'Easy to Love You'..  Next week features a *massive* Scarlet>Fire, don't miss it!    Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 11/1/79 - Thursday      One      Jack Straw [#2:21] ; They Love Each Other [7:12] ; Mama Tried [2:35] > Mexicali Blues [4:22] ; Peggy-O [7:38] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:55] ; Candyman [7:03] ; Looks Like Rain [8:25] ; Don't Ease Me In [3:36] ; Easy To Love You [3:50] ; The Promised Land [4:19]     You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011020.mp3   Hope you stay warm and dry this weekend - looks like some of us are in for some weather!    thank you all for your kind support, which keeps the Deadpod rolling.

Here's a show that I attended and found to be quite magical at the time.. it is from December 1st, 1979 at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA. A beautiful, small venue, the energy on this night was unmatched and I'm sure it comes through on this nice recording. The show starts with a smoking 'Jack Straw', which Jerry then takes into a long and beautiful 'Sugaree'. After this we know we're in for an evening of great jamming, and the boys don't let us down. 'Uncle>Big River', is even full of life, and 'Loser' always a favorite of mine, is perfect. Brent, still new on keyboards, sings a nice 'Easy to Love You'. Bobby's slide work in the 'Minglewood' that follows, could be better but a great 'Althea' saves the day and the band ends this first set with a wonderful 'Music Never Stopped'.. We'll hear set 2 next week...   Grateful Dead Stanley Theatre Pittsburgh, PA 12/1/79 - Saturday One     Jack Straw [5:36] > Sugaree [16:52] ; Me And My Uncle [2:53] > Big River [6:18] ; Loser [7:21] ; Easy To Love You [3:43] ; New Minglewood Blues [7:21] ; Althea [11:33] ; The Music Never Stopped [8:44]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120619.mp3   Peace, health and happiness to all of you during this season.   thank you.

'Easy going' doesn't cut her demeanor. As soon as she starts explaining the games she played with her siblings, it's easy to notice that the light in her eyes glows from a genuine love of wonder. Janet Fofang has been building things long before she knew books were a way to pass across knowledge. Long before the missionary family that ignited her interest in technical education. Her stay in boarding school didn't quell her hands-on approach to life, which explains why a lot of her later years, starting from the university, were spent working on the forefront of the technology at the time. She had to understand how things worked at the fundamental level. She wrote code on paper at a time when offline compilers were a thing of the future. And even with her kids, her stance on self-affirmation and taking responsibility for one's life seeps through. She's been teaching for decades and her knack for elaborate storytelling is evident in her journey as the curious little sister who now fights for everyone, not just women, to understand the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
