S****y Idea Time: a celebration of bold business experiments
Schaffer the Darklord (or STD) is a New York City-based rapper and comedian with material best-suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences. With manic energy fueling a cartoonishly commanding stage presence, STD skewers such topics as hedonistic substance abuse, sexual compulsion, urban anxiety and obsessive cat-enthusiasts. Imagine a Frankenstein-esque monster assembled from equal parts Bill Hicks, Adam Yauch, Joey Ramone and Prince, stitched together inside the shell of a maniacal heavy metal ex-patriot. STD has released eight albums and toured the country with such artists as MC Chris, Miss Eaves, MC Frontalot, Mega Ran and MC Lars. When he's not on the road, he produces and co-hosts The Epic Piecast on the Nerdy Show Podcast Network. In this episode, we talk about music, vulnerability, boundaries and creating a safety net while pursuing something scary. Â
In this episode I got to sit down with my friend Mc Lars after his show in Chicago, IL at Cobra Lounge. We were able to discuss a variety of topics and had some laughs as well. Lars has been on tour with Schaffer The Darklord, and The Doubleclicks. Lars also has his own podcast and a Patreon that you should check out! It's a most glorious day because we have one of the all-time greats of nerdcore hip hop, Schaffer the Darklord! This will not be an origin story episode, but we will look back on different points of Schaffer's extensive career, what he thinks of his old music and the current generation of nerdcore, The Department of Darkness, life in New York City, pro wrestling, burlesque, touring through blizzards, and more. You can get more of Schaffer the Darklord at schafferthedarklord.com. STD will be touring with MC Lars and The Doubleclicks throughout February. Get tickets at nerdcoretour.com. Will and Schaffer The Darklord have similar origin stories.  Schaffer tells Will how Star Wars, George Carlin, The Beastie Boys and Rock shows were vital to broadening his horizons growing up in rural Iowa, how college became overwhelming, his days playing rums in Art Rock and Tribute bands in San Francisco.  How stand up comedy was vital to his transition to Rap, how Nerdcore discovered him and what makes his collaborations with MC Lars work so well. This month, EPIC PIECAST stages a comeback - though we ask that you please not describe it as such. Tower of power NELSON LUGO details his progress as a padawan DJ before maniac psycho SCHAFFER THE DARKLORD reports on his 9th trip to SXSW and the future of nerdcore hip-hop. Will Lugo cancel a guest if they are outed as a garbage person? Will Schaffer gamble the reveal of his most embarrassing work on Wrestlemania predictions? Will the jammy go "blaw?" We knock out answers to these questions and take this itty-bitty world by storm in this month's episode. Learn more about your ad choices. This month, the boys struggle with talking. SCHAFFER THE DARKLORD doesn't want to talk because he's hoarse from screaming into the abyss for weeks. NELSON LUGO can't talk because [REDACTED]. As a solution for their compromised voices, the former airs a prerecorded segment in which he sits down with chiptune/indie rock troubadours Shael Riley and Ty Guenley to discuss and dissect their new collaborative album: Schaffer, Riley, and the Double Ice Backfire - Hold Person. Did Schaffer know what these songs were about when he was writing lyrics? Did Lugo really [REDACTED]? Is...that...the...Apple of Livid Silence?! These questions and more will be [REDACTED] in this month's episode. After taking a break to eat - and digest - all their Thanksgiving food, our illustrious heroes return. Carissa takes the reins to gush about her love of nerdcore hip-hop and provides her list of the Ten Nerdcore Artists You Should Listen To (plus three acts which are nerdcore-adjacent). Complete with samples to give you a taste and whet your appetites, she talks about the special place in her heart reserved for the nerd rappers who most appeal to her. Featuring the music of Futuristic Sex Robotz, ZeaLouS1, YT Cracker, Wordburglar, More or Les, Schaffer The Darklord, M.C. Hawking, MC Frontalot, MC Chris, MadHatter, and Beefy, plus additional love for MC Lars, Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew, and Jonathan Coulton. Whether you're an OG groupie or a nerdcore newbie, this one's for you.Headphone warning: though the levels are basically even, the music may transmit more loudly than just us talking, so don't blow out your eardrums.
On this special Thanksgiving WDEK episode 37, Christian and Shonali talk to comedian/actress Marina Franklin about working in a writers' room (HBO's Divorce), is it actually better for women in comedy today and dating in New York City.  Have you heard of the dating app Bumble? Marina likes Chicago house music and has her own podcast called Friends Like Us which features women of color discussing various hot topics of the day.  Look for Marina in the film Trainwreck!  Special guest Howard Altmann a former banker, is a writer, playwright and a poet.  Howard describes himself as sensitive and an introvert but is he? Howard tells us the most annoying question he gets as a poet. Shonali believes Howard is funny although he has never written a funny poem.  Howard shares some lines from his Academy of American Poets published poem called Paris Winter.  Christian presents a wonderful Thanksgiving cooking aid to our winning guest Ramona Clifton.   Musical guest Schaffer the Darklord is a former heavy metal and punk rock drummer and is now out as nerd-core, horror-core hip-hop artist, although he insists he recites nursery rhymes over beats in front of drunk people.  Yeah, listen and you'll understand.  Schaffer and Shonali are unafraid to talk about liking the Eagles.  Hi-five Schaffer! Apparently there is a difference from what nerd-core music is about and what Schaffer sings about but we sure as hell couldn't tell.  Schaffer performs two of his greatest hits for the audience, "Do Sex" and "The Giant Iron Snake."  Schaffer left WDEK with these words, "Your podcast won't be your Appetite for Destruction!" and we couldn't be happier he did.  Thanks to all of our guests, our intern Justin Hall, photographer Daria Huxley, and sound engineer Stephen Kurpis. He's here. He's in your ears. Highly exalted and frequently referenced, he is: SCHAFFER THE DARKLORD. Yes, today we welcome the talented Hip Hop artist and third & final component of the EPIC PIEcast to our very own show. Schaffer, who has consistently regaled his fans with macabre subjects, nerdy adventures, and cerebral excursions, now takes a tip from the latter as he joins us to discuss a vital influence in his work, the 1992 Beastie Boys LP, Check Your Head. Let's help to turn the tables on it! Then we cut to an special "away"-interview where Schaffer explores Schaffer, with a little help from Matt. And do keep your ears open for some tastes of Schaffer's work, including a track from his provocative album Sick Passenger, a track from Remix Passenger, and something terribly appropriate to close us out.
