You have heard past episodes about the WestEdge Design Fair in Santa Monica, California each Fall. I have been working with Megan, Troy and the entire WestEdge team for 7 editions of the show over 10 years minus those years where the show was cancelled due to the pandemic but I still published content on the podcast featuring show programming. Having left SoCal for Tulsa, it's not as easy as the quick drive down Lincoln Boulevard to the show. No, it means travel.  When I was a kid, not much got me as excited as going on a trip. The excitement didn't start when I got to the destination, it began at the airport. The airport was a place that required fashion choices, we dressed up to travel. It was an experience to walk in, present official documents and then proceed to the lounge where my sister and I would be treated to sweet treats and beverages. That led to an amazing journey that carried over to the plane. There were more Shirley Temples for my sister and I and my parents would have an adult beverage and let me keep the little bottles. By the way, I always shook the last drops out of the bottle and it was never as pleasant as I thought it would be. I dread travel now. The cattle drive that is airport security is stressful, uncomfortable, and one of the more unpleasant experiences we all must endure when traveling. Airport furniture is uncomfortable, cramped and in many cases, damaged and broken. I was thinking about that while going through security on the way back to Tulsa. Is anyone but me surprised by this process and just how bad it is. And how the lack of comfort and. Service in the airports now don't meet expectations in any other aspect of our lives. If our homes were as dysfunctional, overpriced and uncomfortable, I can't think of many people that would tolerate it. The pandemic allowed us to do our work from home offices and now employers want their employees back in the office while most haven't addressed the poor working conditions. And they're getting kick back.  Why am I telling you about this? I was processing all the amazing moments for the 2024 edition of the WestEdge Design Fair. This was the best edition yet. I started working with WestEdge in 2015. I went and covered the show, conducted interviews and had a small 10 x 10 as a base of operations. 2016, I hosted the first Convo By Design Programming Lounge with amazing partners like Warner Bros, The Rug Company, Hollywood at Home and it was designed by Ryan White. In 2017, I took over the theater programming at WestEdge and did it again in 2018 and 2019, lost years 2020, 2021 and 2022, came roaring back in 2023 and this was my 7th WestEdge over 10 years. We have seen some wonderful talks by incredible creatives over the years and this year was no exception. The conversations and ideas discussed are inextricably part of what makes the design industry so amazing and mandatory if we are to further improve the form, functionlaity and performance of the spaces where we live, work and play.  Back to the airport for a minute. I think it's the consultants who screw up the airports. Give some quality designers a shot at airport redesign and you would see something amazing happen. And that all starts with education and sharing ideas for broader adoption. As a busy professional designer, you know how important it is to find the right partnerships. Partnerships that allow you to specify the right products for every project. Professionals like you just don't have time to waste. Let me tell you about one of my partnerships. Pacific Sales is here to serve you with expert, knowledgeable and non-commissioned professionals to help you specify the right product for all your projects. Non-commissioned. That means their only incentive is your satisfaction. Pacific Sales Kitchen & Home, a Best Buy Company has just that with over 60 years of service in Southern California. Pacific Sales is your destination for exploration, advice and inspiration.

In the 1980s, as HIV/AIDS ravaged queer communities and communities of color in the United States and beyond, a straight white teenager named Ryan White emerged as the face of the epidemic. Diagnosed with hemophilia at birth, Ryan contracted HIV through contaminated blood products. In 1985, he became a household name after he was barred from attending his Indiana middle school. As Ryan appeared on nightly news broadcasts and graced the covers of popular magazines, he was embraced by music icons and well-known athletes, achieving a curious kind of stardom.  Analyzing his struggle and celebrity, Paul M. Renfro's powerful biography grapples with the contested meanings of Ryan's life, death, and afterlives. As Renfro argues in The Life and Death of Ryan White: AIDS and Inequality in America (UNC Press, 2024), Ryan's fight to attend school forced the American public to reckon with prevailing misconceptions about the AIDS epidemic. Yet his story also reinforced the hierarchies at the heart of the AIDS crisis. Because the "innocent" Ryan had contracted HIV "through no fault of his own," as many put it, his story was sometimes used to blame presumably "guilty" populations for spreading the virus. Reexamining Ryan's story through this lens, Renfro reveals how the consequences of this stigma continue to pervade policy and cultural understandings of HIV/AIDS today. Cathy Terkanian learned the daughter she gave up for adoption decades earlier vanished under mysterious circumstances while a teenager. When Cathy began her own investigation into the disappearance, she learned police dismissed the involvement of the violent predator living in the home Aundria Bowman grew up in. Her birth mother dedicated herself to getting Aundria's adoptive parents to reveal the truth about what happened. Then, after years of persistence, an unlikely discovery broke the case wide open. From the creative team behind The Keepers and Executive Producer Charlize Theron comes the Netflix documentary series Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter. It follows a decades-long quest for justice and the investigation into a man whose list of violent crimes remained largely unconnected. It also profiles Cathy's quest to do right by the daughter she never knew and bring her home. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Ryan White and producer Jessica Hargrave. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.  Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

This is Play That Rock 'n Roll's retrospective on Bruce Springsteen's iconic hit song, "BORN IN THE USA". In this special episode, we dive deep into the meaning behind the lyrics in the song, how the song has been misappropriated over the years, it's tenuous connection to the RAMBO film series, and whether or not it's right to describe the song as "patriotic". We also discuss several misconceptions about the Vietnam War, including what started the popular conspiracy theory about American POW's being held in Vietnam after the war had ended. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from my conversations with Ryan White (author of "SPRINGSTEEN: ALBUM BY ALBUM") and Jesse Jackson (host of SET LUSTING BRUCE: A Bruce Springsteen Fan Podcast). By Adam Turteltaub The 340B Drug Pricing Program was created to protect safety net hospitals from rising drug prices. It allows them to purchase outpatient drugs, and pharma companies to sell those drugs, at a discount. In this podcast, Jason Reddish (LinkedIn), Principal and Mark Ogunsusi (LinkedIn), Associate, at Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville provide an overview of the program and the compliance requirements. They are also two of the authors of the chapter “Pharmacy:  340B Drug Pricing Program” in the Complete Healthcare Compliance Manual. The 340B program helps hospitals that are the last line of defense for underserved communities, including those with a large percentage of Medicaid patients. Often, they are the only hospital around in rural areas. Also helped by the program are federal grantees such as Ryan White clinics and those providing treatment for STDs. The program dictates which entities can buy discounted drugs and have very specific requirements including two very important ones. First, the drugs cannot be resold or transferred to anyone who is not a patient of the covered entity. Second, double billing of Medicaid is prohibited and must be monitored for. There are a number of typical compliance problem areas, but the good news is that there has been a decline in non-compliance. Listen in to learn more about what covered entities are doing right, and what you should be on the lookout for.

Director Ryan White (GOOD NIGHT OPPY, THE KEEPERS, ASSASSINS) joins us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast to discuss his career and the field of documentary filmmaking. Born and raised in Dunwoody, Georgia, Ryan later enrolled in Duke University where he found his calling to direct documentaries after watching Agnès Varda's THE GLEANERS AND I. After welcoming him on the podcast, Ryan starts off strong by revealing how he's used previous episodes to study a particular department to help secure a job. He reflects on the state of the industry in which he came up that forced him to begin directing in his mid-20s and laments how today's industry can delay a young filmmaker from taking their first steps towards starting a career by employing them to assist those already established. We later learn how Ryan prefers to shoot his documentaries as intimately as possible over several years and how he and his producing partner Jessica Hargrave have typically sold their projects to distributors. Throughout our discussion, we reaffirm the value of learning by doing, of believing in your stories and talents when leaving the nest, and of listening to your mother. - This episode is sponsored by Dallas Film Commission  Instagram: @dallasfilmcommission - Recommended Viewing: THE KEEPERS, GOOD NIGHT OPPY

*This episode includes conversations about Purity Culture, sex and the AIDS crisis and is considered 18+ in content. Please use discretion when listening.* I never thought in a million years that I would be making an episode on Life After MLM about sex, but when Pastor Rob reached out to me to agree with my takes on the dangers of Purity Culture and how he can use the bible to prove it, I jumped at the chance. I mean sex is the only reason any of us are here, and to demonize it and twist scripture to fit this odd narrative to control women for the sake of men's needs seems culty and gross. This episode is for anyone who was ever shamed just for being human and having sexual wants and desires outside of what "society" deemed appropriate. Filmmaker Ryan White has made a dizzying array of unique documentaries, including “The Keepers,” about the unsolved murder of a Catholic nun, “The Case Against 8” about the fight for marriage equality, “Good Night Oppy,” which traces the journey of NASA's Mars Rover and “Assassins,” about the murder of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother. The Emmy-nominated director's latest project, “Pamela, A Love Story,” is a raw look at the life of 90's bombshell Pamela Anderson. It showcases a more vulnerable side of the actress and re-examines the major life events of the star – from her rise to fame to the infamous, stolen sex tape with her then-husband, Tommy Lee. Alec speaks with Ryan White about what he learned filming with Anderson, the impact the documentary had on her life and how he balances the light and the dark of his projects.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
