Jacob Joseph Berger is a musician, songwriter, and attorney currently based in Grandview, Missouri. He came to my attention as the opener for my touring songwriting friend, Jeremy Facknitz, at a 2026 Waldo Folk Show. I remembered thinking during his first song where has this guy been and why have I never heard him before? The second thing I thought was I needed to get him on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show as soon as possible… it took a couple of months to arrange a mutually agreeable date but what you hear next is Jacob's radio debut. Jacob released his debut full length album, Ocean, in 2024. His self-recorded and released EP, Headed West, released in 2026 has become a personal favorite. His finger picking styleand way with words is top notch and faithfully honors multiple roots music traditions. His rendition here of Dolly's “Jolene” performed just a few days after Parton's death is stunning.I can only imagine the Herculean task of raising 4 young children in today's environment. For all of my life, art that touches on relationships, and existentialism in general, have always been up my cup of tea. So I'm always heavily biased towards music that focuses on these subjects. This is why the latest album by today's guests, Open Mike Eagle and Kenny Segal, titled DOOMED, contrary to what the title may suggest, was destined to be an album that would impact me greatly... and impact me greatly it did. Mike's witty humour combined with lived-in authentic experience surrounding a significant breakup, led to some of his greatest writing to-date. This excellent writing was all layered atop a bed of wonderfully lush, and atmospheric production from Kenny Segal. DOOMED is my current album of the year. Taylor Kurta is an award-winning singer/songwriter, certified music therapist, and PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo. A SSHRC Doctoral Fellow and recipient of the Canada's Walk of Fame/RBC Emerging Artist Mentorship Prize, her research develops collaborative songwriting methods with people living with dementia to challenge stigma and promote inclusion. She currently teaches at the University of Toronto Scarborough, where she focuses on music and health in community and medical contexts. Lyrical Translation: The Creation of Modern Poetry in Colonial Korea (U Hawai'i Press, 2026)is a literary history of modern Korean poetry's origins and its development through translation. As the use of Korean became increasingly restricted during the Japanese occupation, translation was not a choice but a necessity for higher education and intellectual labor. Yet it also had an expansive, creative function: Korean poets wielded it as an instrument to reimagine their literature. Around the turn of the twentieth century, intellectuals began abandoning classical Chinese as the default written language to embrace a new vernacular style in prose and verse that was closer to everyday speech. Pushing back against the perception of translation as a process of simple replication, Lyrical Translation reveals how poets used it to forge an entirely new mode of poetic composition. Dr. David Krolikoski is an assistant professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures. His research interests include modern Korean poetry, translation, poetics, postcolonial theory, and transnational literature, and his articles have appeared in Azalea: Journal of Korean Literature and Culture, The Routledge Companion to Korean Literature, Hyŏndae sihak, among others. Dr Armand D'Angour turns our attention to the lyrical poetry of Horace, as it is placed within the Greek musical and poetic inheritance. With close readings of key odes, he shows us how Horace uses Greek lyric meters to achieve something both rhythmic and aural. Constructed around the themes of love, time, and political life, these poems can be seen as carefully constructed personnae, rather than autobiographical confession. This lyric poetry is shown to be a disciplined artform that carries inherited Greek forms into something distinctly Roman, without disturbing the musical intelligence beneath them. These poems were not written to be read silently, but were deeply connected to music, rhythm, and memory. By recovering this dimension, Professor D'Angour illuminates Horace not just as a literary figure, but as a poet working within a living tradition of song in which meaning is brought about through the interplay of sound, structure, and voice.
