Jonathan Gleason spent ten years writing the ten essays in his debut collection, Field Guide to Falling Ill (Yale UP, 2026). In them, Gleason braids together strands from a variety of sources – from his experience with a potentially-lethal blood clot, to his imprisoned uncle, to his journey to access medication to prevent HIV – to analyze America's healthcare system and the humiliating, confusing, and depersonalizing effects it can often have. The essays approach medicine from a variety of viewpoints, from Jonathan's perspective as a gay man analyzing the development of HIV medications like AZT and Truvada, to his experience as a Spanish language medical interpreter at a free clinic in Iowa City. But each essay also reminds readers of the importance of understanding the history of our healthcare institutions, and the necessity of feeling less alone when confronted by their myriad failures. Lyrical, poignant, and deeply human, Field Guide to Falling Ill is a poetic approach to understanding medicine in America. I love hosting Siren Song once a month on a Saturday onKKFI.  The focus, regardless of genre, is on female voices and songwriting telling the stories of women's lives.  Kansas City based songwriter Jillian Riscoe reached out to me via email about her Ancient History EP project. We scheduleda date on Siren Song for a live performance.  The Midwest winter weather turned ugly on the appointed day so wepivoted to a phone conversation followed up a couple of tunes from the EP.Singing and performing since the age of 7 in country,rock and pop line ups Jillian has toured and performed across the United States, including at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show, major sporting events and teams like the KC Royals and KC Current, the GrammyMuseum Music Revolution Project, and the CDBaby DIY Musician's Conference. She has received regional music awards, secured national radio airplay,  has been featured on regional TV and opened for international touring artists & bands. This week on the podcast, Patrick and Tracy welcome Emily Mitchell to talk about her new short story collection The Church of Divine Electricity. About The Church of Divine Electricity: Delightfully blending literary fiction with speculative genres, the stories in The Church of Divine Electricity somehow manage to feel as though they could take place today. In Emily Mitchell's created worlds, as in our own, technology bewitches, especially with its ability to heighten both connections and isolation. Whether being held by a giant and comforting machine, allowing micro-drones to record one's every moment for a year to win prize money, or choosing self-mutilation in exchange for a bionic hand, these characters navigate technological and social change. The familiar can turn unrecognizable and disorienting—sometimes in a flash, sometimes gradually. Lyrical, haunting, and often funny, these stories ask us to consider what—and who—gets left out of a seemingly utopian future of technological advancements. Finely observed, thoughtful, and vivid, Mitchell's stories get under your skin. It's not that the best-laid plans could lead us astray—it's that they may already have. About Emily Mitchell: Emily Mitchell grew up in London, England and moved to the United States as a teenager. She is the author of a novel, The Last Summer of the World (W. W. Norton, 2007), which was a finalist for the NYPL Young Lions Award, and two collections of short fiction, Viral (W. W. Norton, 2015) and The Church of Divine Electricity, winner of the 2023 Elixir Press Fiction Prize, forthcoming from University of Wisconsin Press in fall 2025. Her stories have appeared in Harpers', The Sun, The Southern Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Prairie Schooner, The Missouri Review, American Short Fiction and elsewhere. Nothing puts you in the Christmas spirit like the perfect holiday playlist. And by mid-November it's everywhere—your car, the grocery store, the gym…jail. It soundtracks every aspect of our lives. You can't escape it. And most of us don't want to. It gives us all the feels we've waited all year for. We come to associate these songs with our own stories, but what are their stories?
