Host Dr. Alan Garfinkel interviews Dr. John Bellezza about his path from traveling in India and Tibet in the 1980s to focusing on Tibetan prehistory, archaeology, cosmology, and rock art, later earning a PhD at the University of Kent based on prior publications. Bellezza stresses learning Tibetan languages and working in the field as Tibet opened to travelers in 1984, then turning to pre-Buddhist traditions often erased or absorbed by Buddhism and long neglected by scholars. He describes discoveries at Lake Namtso, evidence for high-altitude pastoralism and hunting, and key finds in rock art and monuments, including chariots and standing-stone complexes. He previews ongoing rock art volumes and future work on bronze talismans and Old Tibetan texts. A faint orange hand stencil on the wall of a cave in Indonesia just became the oldest art known to science. The art, made by splattering ochre over a hand, had been painted over by subsequent generations and was only preserved because moisture combined with the limestone of the cave to form a protective layer on top. The finding strengthens the picture that humans migrated via Borneo, Sulawesi and Papua to reach Australia at least 65,000 years ago. This week on 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die, we take on “Heroes” — a song that somehow manages to be genuinely beautiful, historically important, and still capable of making us argue for way too long.We dig into David Bowie in his Berlin era, the real story behind the kiss by the Wall, why this song sounds enormous even when it's barely moving, and how Heroes became shorthand for triumph, hope, and stadium-sized emotion, whether it earned it or not.Along the way, we talk Cold War romance, production tricks that shouldn't work but absolutely do, Bowie mythology versus reality, and whether repeated cultural overuse can turn even a great song into something… complicated. It's respectful. It's argumentative. And yes, someone still has to ask the question: could you beat David Bowie in a fight?DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! lKory Clarke is best known as the outspoken frontman and creative force behind Warrior Soul, the politically charged, no-filter hard rock band that rose from New York City's underground in the late '80s. Clarke's mission from the start was clear: shake the system and wake the people.Blending punk attitude with metal power, Clarke led Warrior Soul through a run of killer albums — Last Decade Dead Century, Drugs, God and the New Republic, and Salutations from the Ghetto Nation — all loaded with rebellion, wit, and that “acid punk” energy that made them stand out. His lyrics hit like manifestos, railing against greed, control, and media corruption, long before those themes were trendy again.Even after lineup changes and label battles, Clarke kept pushing forward, reviving Warrior Soul in the 2000s and continuing to release new music that's just as raw and fearless as ever — including Rock 'N' Roll Disease and Out on Bail. He's also an accomplished painter and poet, channeling that same defiant spirit into every art form he touches. With his gravel-and-gasoline voice, anti-establishment fire, and refusal to ever play it safe, Kory Clarke stands as one of rock's true lifers — a rebel artist who never stopped believing that music could still mean something.Official band website: warriorsoul.com • Bandcamp (music & downloads): koryclarkewarriorsoul.bandcamp.com • Instagram (art + updates): @kory_clarke_art

Content warning: this episode contains lengthy discussions about death and drug use, and a brief mention of suicide. On this episode we tackle two albums we've never heard before... until we listened to them for the first time for this episode! That's right, instead of perfectly curating a classic album for a prompt, today we are spinning some albums we've been meaning to check out but have not heard a single song from.First we discuss Julius's pick. As a big fan of the Stooges, they never got around to checking out any solo Iggy Pop. Produced by David Bowie, The Idiot is Pop's first solo album and was recorded while both Pop and Bowie were trying to kick their drug habits. Does it meet the high standard set by the Stooges? Find out by listening! On to Danny's pick, we talk about Tonight's the Night - the final installment of the unofficial "Ditch Trilogy." This era saw Neil Young eschewing the sounds of Harvest that skyrocketed his career. Instead, he made albums infused with raw emotion stemming from tragic losses in his life and struggles with substance abuse.Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Check out our preview episodes to stay caught up with what we're listening to! This week we travel back in time to just after the dawn of PUNK ROCK (1978-1981)! We discuss bands influenced by the 1st wave who then took punk into various sub-genres. If you don't think Punk is for you based on secondhand information, we ask that you listen with an open mind and prepare to get out some aggression. This episode features songs with the shortest track length that we've ever played; it's PUNK ROCK people! Punk is where Kevin started down his path of music fanaticism. Although, that was more based around the hardcore Punk scenes. This is the lead-up to hardcore, and what would establish punk as a lasting genre full of variety and originality. Send us a textGet Ready To Groove: Why Brass Camel Is The Band You Need To Know About Right Now!#newmusic #progrock #progfunk #camel #newalbum After successfully criss-crossing Canada three times on the strength of a word-of-mouth reputation and a hard-earned live following, Vancouver-based Brass Camel return with their second full-length record: Camel. Clocking in at 40 minutes across just six tracks, the album is an unapologetic artistic statement from a band whose sound resists easy classification—equal parts progressive rock ambition and deep-pocket groove, with no shortage of swagger, surprises, and soul.Their self-styled “prog-funk” sound may raise eyebrows on paper, but as multiple Grammy-winner Fantastic Negrito put it: “They sound like a funky Rush.” Or, as Big Sugar frontman Gordie Johnson (who also guests on the record as the group's Zappa-tinged “cat whisperer”) once declared, “Brass Camel…man, they're good worldwide.”Following their 2022 debut Brass, the band doubled down—both on the road and in the studio. Camel is the result of that momentum: two 11-minute bookends, four shapeshifting shorter tracks, and zero interest in playing it safe.Website: https://www.brasscamel.ca/epkInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/brasscamelFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/brassycamelApplemusic: https://music.apple.com/ca/artist/brass-camel/1629161926Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/59HNn8uI1RIbWzmPUy5pFm?si=54e041a98f934c34&nd=1&dlsi=aa86680918574875Bandcamp: https://brasscamelband.bandcamp.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@UCx1fnIXz40ZxIBAWmmjXtjg TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UCx1fnIXz40ZxIBAWmmjXtjg Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

Just before celebrating his 60th anniversary, French-Brazilian guitar player, composer, producer and film-maker Marcelo Paganini will digitally release two singles on the 20th of November 2024.The first single Marcelo Paganini will release is his short orchestral overture “Poder Paralelo”. It is just 49 bars. It lasts only about one minute. Perfect for the short attention span audience of the current times. It is the first movement of his first symphony “Belo Horizonte” that he wrote 20 years ago, when his friend Andre Dequech told him about a composition contest. Award nominee sound engineer John Chapman did the audio mixing in Hollywood, California, USA. Marcelo Paganini conducted by himself the Budapest Scoring Orchestra in Budapest, Hungary on October the 23rd for the recording. 3 cameras captured the performance and the video will also be released on the 20th of November. There will also be an “making of” short film documentary produced and directed by Marcelo Paganini that will be released next year on the film festival circuit.Buy the Music: https://marcelopaganini.bandcamp.com/track/poder-paraleloInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/marcelopaganini.ic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/Marcelo-Paganini-100043967236194/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/MarcelloPaganiniThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!
Interview with Kerry Jones Of Death Doula. Death Doula's new album Love Spells available on all streaming platforms. Love Spells is the debut album from Death Doula, a dusky Art-Rock band hailing from Portland, Oregon. The new album was recorded at Jackpot Studios by Adam Lee (Built to Spill, Sleater- Kinney) and mixed by Bob Cheek, (Deftones, Band of Horses). It's being released as a digital download and via streaming platforms by Death Doula Records on October 11. Kerry Jones had a crush on his best friend. Kyle List didn't mind, he asked her to come collaborate at his tiny home studio anyway. By the end of the night, they were in love and had created a demo of “Disembark”, which would be lead single from Love Spells. Three weeks later, he moved to Portland to live with her, with no plan beyond an intuition that the music would take them somewhere. Fast forwarding two years later, they recruited the veteran rhythm section of Keith Vidal on bass (Marjorie Faire, Nyles Lannon) and Adam Kozie on drums (Pollens, Crystal Beth) and adopted the name “Death Doula.” The music they've created shows their shared love of artists like Can, Television, Jeff Buckley, The Cranberries, Deerhunter, Kate Bush, The Sundays and Deftones, while remaining altogether sonically new. After having their lives dramatically reshaped during the pandemic, the members of Death Doula approach music with an intensity that can only come from having spent a lifetime wanting it. Kerry and Kyle have an 11 year age difference. Keith and Kyle have a 22 year age difference. Each member pours their lifetime of experience into performances that place emotion and groove first.“In a world so algorithmized it's numb,” says Kerry “we just want to make people feel something again.” https://deathdoula.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/deathdoulaband/?img_index=1

Phil Manzanera has had a remarkable life. Best known as the lead guitarist in Roxy Music, he's also worked as a writer, producer and/or performer with the likes of David Gilmour, Steve Winwood, Nico, Brian Eno and many more. He's just released a mammoth box set of his solo work which dates back to 1975's “Diamond Head” album. The box, entitled “50 Years Of Music”, comes at a time of reflection for Manzanera. He recently released a memoir, in which he detailed his childhood in Cuba at the time of Batista's overthrow in 1959, and his suspicion that his Dad, who ostensibly worked for BOAC airlines, was actually a spy. Manzanera lived in different parts of the Americas as a child and later went to boarding school at Dulwich College in London. Phil went on to explore his Latin American roots in his music, and another bizarre twist occurred in 2011 when Kanye West and Jay-Z sampled a guitar part from his 1978 “K-Scope” album for their track “No Church In The Wild”. Manzanera has claimed this one sample earned him more money than his entire time in Roxy Music. Anyway, I was sure Phil would have great stories to share and I hope you enjoy our conversation. A legendary punk band that came out of Yellow Springs.
Thurston Moore is one of the most famous names in rock. With Kim Gordon and Lee Ronaldo, he formed Sonic Youth, one of the definitive art rock bands... yes, ART rock. Sonic Youth album covers famously spotlighted artists, from Gerhard Richter's candle on the cover of 1988's Daydream Nation to Raymond Pettibon's cartoon couple on the cover of 1990's Goo to Mike Kelley's stuffed animal on the cover of 1992's Dirty to Marnie Weber's collage for 1998's A Thousand Leaves. Well, now Moore is back, putting out a new dreamy solo album titled Flow Critical Lucidity, and true to form, the cover is another literal work of art: a photo of a sculpture of what appears to be metal helmet, studded with tuning forks. This is a work called Samurai Walkman, by the artist Jamie Nares. Nares is a figure of major cachet herself. She only just had a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art here in New York in the summer. Back in 2020, her fantastic 2011 video Street was the first film to be projected on the exterior of the Metropolitan Museum of Art—Thurston Moore, in fact, did the soundtrack to that film. Nares and Moore have a fruitful history of collaboration together, having both come up in the chaotic, experimental No Wave scene of the 1970s, and this week they join Ben Davis on the podcast to discuss. We're also thrilled to announce the launch of Art Market Minute, our new micro-podcast, hosted by news editor Margaret Carrigan. It offers a weekly snapshot of essential art market news, expertly compiled by the Artnet PRO editorial team. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts every Monday.
Mia Zapata and the Gits: A True Story of Art, Rock and Revolution (Ferel House, 2024) by Steve Moriarty, shares the story of the Seattle based The Gits and their charismatic front person Mia Zapata. The Gits were on the verge of international rock stardom but on July 7, 1993, days before their third US tour, Mia Zapata, The Gits 27-year-old singer-songwriter, was brutally assaulted and murdered by a stranger. Zapata's death sent chilling ripples through progressive communities throughout the United States. She became a cause-celebre for women's rights activists outraged by the brutal killing and lack of law enforcement support. This book reclaims Zapata's story to focus on the art she and The Gits created and not her tragic end. Much has been written and said about her murder, yet Zapata's life and work remain overshadowed by the circumstances of her death. Zapata's friend and bandmate, Steve Moriarty, tells her story--and the story of their band, The Gits--from their first meeting in 1985 to their last goodbye. Moriarity and Zapata met in 1985 as first-year students at Antioch College, where they discovered the power of punk rock and found an outlet for their progressive ideas through music. Zapata, Moriarity, and fellow students Matt Dresdner and Andy Kessler attended a show by San Francisco punk legends Dead Kennedys that inspired the friends to start a band fueled by Mia's provocative lyrics. They quickly gained critical praise and dedicated fans. Moriarty details their struggles as newcomers to the then-pre-tech outpost of the Seattle music scene. Interspersed are the tales Zapata told of her legendary ancestor, Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, to entertain the band as they spent countless hours on the road crammed into a single un-air-conditioned van touring the US and Europe. They shared stages with Beck, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Joan Jett, Bikini Kill, L7, and more--all who expected Mia and The Gits to be the next "big thing." The Gits's story is more than a biography; it's a testament to the ability of artists and musicians to challenge the status quo and the power of friendship to change the world. Moriarty reframes the sensationalist story as he shares his personal narrative and presents, with intimacy, grit, and humor, the lived experience of The Gits and his dear friend, Mia Zapata. Included are never before seen paintings, letters, and pictures. Learn more about your ad choices.
