Avowed blev første gang annonceret tilbage i juli 2020 til Xbox Games Showcase. Obsidian Entertainment har efterhånden et imponerende CV; studiet har stået bag Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth og The Outer Worlds. I 2018 blev studiet købt af Microsoft og blev en del af Xbox Game Studios. Siden da har de dog fået lov til at forfølge mindre passionsprojekter såsom Grounded og Pentiment. Avowed er derfor studiets første AAA-titel under Xbox og foregår tilmed i Obsidians Pillars of Eternity-univers.Spillet har dog gennemgået flere store ændringer undervejs. Det startede blandt andet som et game-as-a-service-spil, men det blev droppet, og nu er spillet endelig ude - og det er "endelig", for hypen har været stor grundet en masse meget positive previews.
