In Episode 119, Adam sits down with Washington Heights rapper LIFEOFTHOM to break down his journey through New York City's rap scene and how he's building a career in today's independent music landscape. Thom talks about the viral Washington Square Park freestyle moment where he ended up rapping in front of the NYC mayor, how moments like that can translate into real fans, and why artists need to learn how to leverage attention in the modern music industry. He also shares the story behind connecting with legendary producer Plain Pat (Kid Cudi, Kanye West) and what he learned from working with someone who has helped shape some of hip-hop's most iconic records. Throughout the conversation, Thom gives insight into building a team, opening for artists like Conway the Machine and IDK, life on tour, and how independent rappers are navigating tech, direct-to-fan models, and the changing business of music. Whether you're a hip-hop fan or someone interested in the music industry, this episode offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to build a rap career today. In this episode of the SoundCentric Podcast, Adam sits down with Hadji Gaviota for a deep dive into the realities of touring as an independent artist. Fresh off his cross-country run on “The Blind Tour” with Damag3 and Rob Apollo, Hadji breaks down the grind behind the scenes — from sleeping on couches and eating gas-station meals to discovering how to actually make money on the road. The two unpack the economics of merch, the creative strategies behind tour budgeting, and the lessons learned from performing 13 shows in three weeks. Beyond the financials, Hadji reflects on the emotional highs of meeting fans in person and the importance of building an authentic live presence. Rapping phenomenon and Tottenham Hotspur superfan AJ Tracey joins us this week to talk about supporting his mum through her cancer journey, the pressures of staying an independent artist and what football has taught him about failure. AJ Tracey has been rapping since the age of four. He dropped out of his Criminology degree at London Metropolitan University and started uploading tracks to SoundCloud in 2011, achieving five Platinum singles and over two billion Spotify plays as an independent artist. His first studio album debuted at number three in the UK Albums chart and his breakthrough hit, Ladbroke Grove, became the unofficial summer anthem of 2019. Now, after a three-year hiatus, marked by leaked songs and pandemic delays, Tracey has just released his third album, Don't Die Before You're Dead. It's his most vulnerable and personal work yet and as well as being a love letter to the UK, the album fuses grime, garage, and R&B with themes of trauma, mental health, faith and love. In this episode of "Hip Hop What Ifs," hosted by D and 12Kyle, the discussion turns to the question, "What if Lauryn Hill had continued her rap career?" They delve into the impactful yet complex legacy of Lauryn Hill in the hip-hop world. As they explore the trajectory of Hill's career, from her groundbreaking work with the Fugees to her transformative solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," listeners are invited to consider how Hill's choices might have reshaped the landscape of female rap. The episode navigates through Lauryn Hill's rise in the music industry, touching on key moments like the Fugees' success with their album "The Score," and Hill's departure from music to focus on personal life. With in-depth analysis, the hosts ponder the potential influence Hill could have wielded in contemporary hip-hop, drawing parallels to artists like Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim, and later figures such as Rapsody. They also entertain the idea of Hill making a comeback and what that would mean in today's musical context.
