On May 4, 2012, Adam Yauch – the pioneering musician and filmmaker whose unique voice and visionary approach helped catapult the Beastie Boys to global fame with hits like "Sabotage," "Intergalactic," and "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" – passed away from cancer after a three-year battle with the disease. Yauch's untimely death was a profound loss to those who knew him, but his legacy is secure as one of the most innovative, socially conscious, and influential figures in hip-hop and music history.

His newest record, Don't Take Your Heartache Out On The World (Sept 13 via Symphonic) is a richly produced hook party that both globally and specifically addresses the trappings of love loss, infidelity and even "punkness", all in one sincere and at times humorous package. In this episode, David shares the journey of going from songwriter/protools tinkerer to landing as an engineer at the late Adam Yauch's Oscilloscope Laboratories and finally becoming a prolific self producing artist. David also tells us why collaboration is valuable to him and how it functions as a vehicle for him to loosen the rains on his production. Their conversation is wide ranging and covers topics from the role of failure in achieving success to Mike's personal meditation practice. They say, “never meet your heroes”, but Mike D doesn't disappoint in this smart and thoughtful discussion. Mike D formed the Beastie Boys with Adam Yauch, aka MCA, in the early 80's, winning a number of Grammys and spanning a multi-decade career. In 2018, along with his bandmate, Adam Horovitz, Diamond co-authored Beastie Boys Book, which told the story of the band in its own words and reached #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list. A limited series of live shows, in which the two brought stories from the book to life, was captured in the 2020 film Beastie Boys Story. It is almost impossible for anyone from a lightweight boy band to transition to serious, respected artist…it can be done—we can look at Justin Timberlake and, um…well, we can look at Justin Timberlake…. And as tough as that is, it's even more difficult to move from being pigeonholed as a novelty act to one that carries gravitas and serious artistic merit…yet that's what the beastie boys managed to do… No one took them seriously for the first eight years of their career…they were spoiled, snotty frat boys writing goofy songs and making funny videos… “Licensed to Ill” was a parody of hip hop…a good one, but a still a parody…let's not forget that “Rolling Stone” described the album as “three idiots make a masterpiece”… But then something changed…The Beastie Boys grew up…they grew as artists…they grew as businessmen…they grew as humans… They took risks…they experimented…they branched out…they sought to make a difference—not just in music but in the world…and by the time it all came to an end with the death of Adam Yauch in the spring of 2012, The Beastie Boys had cemented a reputation as one the most important bands of not one but at least two generations… This is remembering The Beastie Boys, part 2. Adam Yauch, ofwel MCA
