This episode of Street Culture Podcast has a different sound – English, because our guest is the iconic carrier of European breaking history from Sweden, Bboy Freeze. So the quotes in the carousel are in the language of flow and cipher. What did the first wave of hip-hop in Europe look like? Why was breaking in the 80s an act of rebellion, not just a trend? What did hip-hop sound like before it was played on the radio? And how did the streets of Gothenburg differ from the streets of Kharkiv? In the thirteenth episode of the second season of Street Culture Podcast, we go back to the 80s, when breaking was just emerging in Sweden. These were the times of VHS tapes, disco clubs for teenagers, and the first battles in school hallways. That's when it all began – with robot dance, Rocksteady crew tapes, and roller skating parties. Everything that is now called a scene was then simply called «being in your neighborhood and wanting to dance». Bboy Freeze's story is a journey from living room floors and the first belly mill to the creation of the legendary Ghost Crew. It's a conversation about contrasts – when someone trained with city support, and someone else under threat of arrest due to VHS. When someone had clubs and tours, and someone else had only concrete and stubbornness. We talk not only about dance but also about a generation that didn't stop when it became «unfashionable». About the dark ages of Scandinavian breaking, which laid the foundation for everything that exists now. About those times when one had to fight not for medals, but for the very existence of culture. The previous decade saw the shift from Mento to the rise of Ska, the slowdown morphing into Rocksteady and eventual transition to something slower with a heavier groove, lower bass, and a new voice - one that communicated the news lyrically of what was transpiring within Kingston and surrounding areas - Roots Reggae. The Shift: From Rocksteady to Roots The late '60s gave us rocksteady, smoother, soulful, love-driven tunes with slower rhythms and tight harmonies. But by 1971, Jamaica was changing. The people were speaking out about politics, poverty, Rastafari, repatriation, and resistance. And the music began to echo that shift. Roots reggae emerged as a soundtrack to consciousness. The drums got heavier. The basslines got deeper. The lyrics started telling the truth about ghetto life, oppression, and spiritual awakening. Why the Golden Era? What makes it so special? Along with the fashion that has been part of Hip Hop culture from the start was the message, much like reggae shifted from love songs during the Rocksteady era to Roots Reggae in the 70s, where people were trying to unite and bring something more conscious and durable to the recordings. HipHop would repeat this shift 20 years later, from the early 80s with Run DMC, LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh, and Kurtis Blow to Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Digable Planets, & Public Enemy amongst others - they formed a coalition of unity, consciousness, and empowerment. The Golden Era wasn't just about hits; it was a cultural movement. It set the blueprint for what hip-hop could be: raw yet refined, rebellious but thoughtful. Whether you grew up with these tracks or are just discovering them, this mix is a celebration of the sound and soul of one of music's most influential periods. We had already finished this recording when surprising news broke in the world of PlayStation: Sony has cancelled two of its upcoming, unannounced games. And -- would you believe it? -- they were both live service titles, including a God of War spin-off. The really unfortunate news, however, is who was making these titles: Bend and Bluepoint, two smaller AAA teams that typically work on a single project at a time, thus wasting years of development, as well as time and resources that can never be recovered. What in the world is going on with PlayStation Studios, and how did the person who helmed the first party family during such a tumultuous period of greenlights and plug-pulling ascend to the top of PlayStation itself? It's time to start asking some really hard questions. Other news this week includes substantial rumors of more Xbox content en route to PlayStation which, if true, will make Microsoft the single most-prolific producer of content for a platform that was once its arch-rival, but no longer.
