EPISODE 339 - We take a look at the show that brought huge fame for the Turtle -- the original Saturday morning TV show. Although primarily made as a way to promote the new toy line, the creators of this TV show also wanted it to be good. So there was a lot of thought put into this show. They took a lot of visual designs from the comic, but simplified the story considerable. They added new characters (Rocksteady and BeBop), half-new characters (Krang the talking brain) and gave April a more specific consistent personality. We look at the first five episodes, which is the entire first season and which tell a single story. The story gets complicated, but it's fun and thoughtful and... pretty darn good. Hey, maybe these Turtles are gonna be around for a while. In Loose Screws, we talk about the new season of Stranger Things. Next week we go over the first TMNT live action movie! ------------ Subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com to support the show and to get monthly bonus episodes. This week on Nintendo Pow BlockThis week on Nintendo Pow Block, Edward Varnell and Corey Dirrig dive into the latest from the world of Nintendo. They kick things off with early impressions of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and share their thoughts on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment after finishing the game. They also break down Netflix's surprise plan to buy Warner Bros. Streaming & Studios for about $82.7 billion, a move that would bring major game studios like Rocksteady and NetherRealm under the Netflix banner if it goes through. From there, the duo discusses Yacht Club Games, which says its long-awaited, Zelda-like Mina the Hollower needs strong sales to keep the studio on solid ground. They also look at CD Projekt Red's ambitious claim that it will release its entire new Witcher trilogy within six years—a timeline many fans and analysts doubt is realistic. On the Switch 2 front, a strange Pikmin 4 listing briefly hinted at an upgraded version before Nintendo pulled it, and a new datamine has fans hoping for Donkey Kong Bananza content in Mario Kart World. All that and more on Nintendo Pow Block!Follow our Hosts: Edward Varnell, Cofounder of Boss Rush NetworkCorey Dirrig, Founder of Boss Rush Media and the Boss Rush NetworkJoin the Boss Rush Community: Join the Boss Rush Network Community DiscordFollow Boss Rush Network: Follow Boss Rush Network on X/Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, and InstagramSupport Boss Rush Network:Support Boss Rush on Patreon and buy merch on our Store. Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with actor Cam Clarke. For many American families, the King family defined Christmas entertainment. "Now They're All Here: The King Family, Over 100 Years of Entertainment From America's First Family of Song" is a not only a complete history of the famous King family, but a story of author, Cam Clarke's, life in front of and behind the camera. "Now They're All Here: The King Family " is more than just a celebration of television history; it's a family album from one of America's most iconic entertainment families. The King Family has been performing together (and with solo careers) since the 1920s: vaudeville, radio, musical films of the 1940s, kitschy sci-fi from the 1950s, tours across the country, recordings in musical genres from jazz and big band to Broadway and pop—even cartoons and video games. Cameron Arthur Clarke is an American voice actor who is known for voicing Leonardo and Rocksteady from the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, Shotaro Kaneda from Akira, Freddy from the Barnyard franchise, Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Clay Kaczmarek from Assassin's Creed II and Simba from The Lion King franchise whenever Matthew Broderick is unavailable. Cam is also known for being the voice for Snoopy (Snoopy the Musical/Talking Snoopy Doll), Max Sterling in Robotech, He-Man in the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the tween idol, Heath Burns, in the original Monster High, and Professor X in several X-Men properties. This episode of Street Culture Podcast has a different sound – English, because our guest is the iconic carrier of European breaking history from Sweden, Bboy Freeze. So the quotes in the carousel are in the language of flow and cipher. What did the first wave of hip-hop in Europe look like? Why was breaking in the 80s an act of rebellion, not just a trend? What did hip-hop sound like before it was played on the radio? And how did the streets of Gothenburg differ from the streets of Kharkiv? In the thirteenth episode of the second season of Street Culture Podcast, we go back to the 80s, when breaking was just emerging in Sweden. These were the times of VHS tapes, disco clubs for teenagers, and the first battles in school hallways. That's when it all began – with robot dance, Rocksteady crew tapes, and roller skating parties. Everything that is now called a scene was then simply called «being in your neighborhood and wanting to dance». Bboy Freeze's story is a journey from living room floors and the first belly mill to the creation of the legendary Ghost Crew. It's a conversation about contrasts – when someone trained with city support, and someone else under threat of arrest due to VHS. When someone had clubs and tours, and someone else had only concrete and stubbornness. We talk not only about dance but also about a generation that didn't stop when it became «unfashionable». About the dark ages of Scandinavian breaking, which laid the foundation for everything that exists now. About those times when one had to fight not for medals, but for the very existence of culture. Listen to Street Culture Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud, and MEGOGO Audio. We preserve history while it still breathes. We are creating a new season of the podcast about Ukrainian street culture together with Street Culture & uabreaking & Algorytm NGO and Egor Dach. Find out how breaking history was made and how breaking became an Olympic discipline from training in a residential area.
The previous decade saw the shift from Mento to the rise of Ska, the slowdown morphing into Rocksteady and eventual transition to something slower with a heavier groove, lower bass, and a new voice - one that communicated the news lyrically of what was transpiring within Kingston and surrounding areas - Roots Reggae. The Shift: From Rocksteady to Roots The late '60s gave us rocksteady, smoother, soulful, love-driven tunes with slower rhythms and tight harmonies. But by 1971, Jamaica was changing. The people were speaking out about politics, poverty, Rastafari, repatriation, and resistance. And the music began to echo that shift. Roots reggae emerged as a soundtrack to consciousness. The drums got heavier. The basslines got deeper. The lyrics started telling the truth about ghetto life, oppression, and spiritual awakening. Why the Golden Era? What makes it so special? Along with the fashion that has been part of Hip Hop culture from the start was the message, much like reggae shifted from love songs during the Rocksteady era to Roots Reggae in the 70s, where people were trying to unite and bring something more conscious and durable to the recordings. HipHop would repeat this shift 20 years later, from the early 80s with Run DMC, LL Cool J, Doug E. Fresh, and Kurtis Blow to Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Digable Planets, & Public Enemy amongst others - they formed a coalition of unity, consciousness, and empowerment. The Golden Era wasn't just about hits; it was a cultural movement. It set the blueprint for what hip-hop could be: raw yet refined, rebellious but thoughtful. Whether you grew up with these tracks or are just discovering them, this mix is a celebration of the sound and soul of one of music's most influential periods. A working man. A man who works… to free his boss' daughter from the clutches of a human trafficking ring. Gabrus joins Jake and Julian as we attempt to make sense of this very puzzling film starring Jason Statham and co-written by none other than Sylvestor Stallone. They've come together to make an awful mess, complete with mobsters straight out of Grand Theft Auto and the Russian bad guy equivalent of Beebop and Rocksteady. Gabrus also talks about his experience seeing the film in 4D.
