The Third Sunday in Advent goes by many names: Gaudete (Latin for rejoice) Sunday, Shepherds' Sunday and Pink Candle Sunday – to name a few. The coming of Jesus as a Child certainly a “joy to the world” moment in history. But we also rejoice in Advent that Jesus will come again on the Last Day and make everything new once again as well as Jesus coming to us in Word and Sacrament every day. We rejoice in God changing everything when He comes to save in Jesus.

This Sunday in Advent continued with John the Baptist. This time John is not in the wilderness, but rather in prison. And much to our surprise, from there he sends messengers to Jesus, asking "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" John had been the outspoken forerunner of Jesus, and now he appears to be the chief questioner of Jesus. Perhaps Jesus did not match up with John's expectations for what the Messiah would be like. Perhaps a good Advent question is this: Will we receive the Messiah, Jesus, as he is rather than as we would have him to be? I mean, really, who is this guy?

Welcome to Christ Community Church of Wilmington NC. We are committed to teaching the Bible, transforming lives, and touching our world.
The season of advent is a season of reminding us about who Jesus Christ is as Emmanuel (God with Us) and what Jesus Christ has given us from His life. His grace provides a life which is transformed by the hope, peace, joy, and love that come through Him. The OT foretold of these blessings that would come through the coming Messiah. This series of Christmas messages come from the book of Isaiah and are a reminder of what Christ has done for mankind. It is also a reminder that the promised Messiah will one day return again so that we may be prepared as His disciples for the loving King's arrival.
Isaiah said that there is a highway there, and the way shall be called holiness. Not until we have a clear understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ will we have a clear understanding of holiness and its importance in our lives.

The church turns to Isaiah frequently during Advent because it finds in his beautiful poetry resonance with the promises of redemption that come in and through the birth of Jesus Christ. Larry Hayward preaches on this third Sunday of Advent from Isaiah 35:1-10.

The Christmas season is supposed to be a time of joyful anticipation for the Christian - so why do so many of us struggle to survive it?
