The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation neighboring Fountain Hills, Ariz. recently dealt with reports of “aggressive dogs running loose”, resulting in attacks that prompted its police department to increase patrols while urging the public to stay away. KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports. Two tribal members were bitten last week and are now recovering from non-lethal injuries, according to acting chief of police Jesse Puffer. “We did catch three out of the four dogs.” Incidents like this are not uncommon on tribal lands with canines roaming their 24,000-acre reservation. Some are seen as strays – often dogs that are dumped there by owners who do not wish to keep them – while others are claimed by tribal members as pets. “We also have a dog ordinance, too, so people get cited for that as well – depending on what the nature anywhere from, you know, $150 fine and plus you and it can be higher if you can't show record of vaccination and also licensing.” The documentary “Remaining Native” tracks Yerington Paiute Tribal member Ku Stevens as he confronts the horror of what his great-grandfather went through in boarding school. Stevens created a remembrance run tracking the same route his great-grandfather took to escape his boarding school. KNPR's Jimmy Romo attended a screening of the film and brings us this report. Warning: This story includes accounts of violence against children In 1913, government officials ripped 8-year-old Yerington Paiute Tribe member Frank Quinn from his family and placed him in the Stewart Indian Boarding School near Carson City, Nev.  As part of her history PhD studies at UNLV, Annie Delgado researches what actually happened to Native children in the U.S. boarding school system. “The early years are just filled with trauma, abuse, pain, and just assimilation.”   Many students tried to escape the abuse. Quinn's great-grandson Ku Stevens is the protagonist in the documentary, “Remaining Native”. In the film, viewers learn, along with Stevens, the story of his great-grandfather. To remember the courage of Native children who tried to escape, Stevens organized a remembrance run from Yerington, Nev. to the Stewart Indian School.  The first run took place in 2021, followed by three others. The route marked the same 50-mile run Quinn took to go back home, as Stevens explains.   “They were running, sweating and bleeding. I think of this guy Russell, who I consider just like an uncle, broke both his feet, fractured them by the end of the run. And he did all 50 miles.”   In the most recent class action lawsuit, the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California filed a case against the federal government in May. They are suing over misused funds. Currently, the sovereign nations are requesting the U.S. itemize a $23 billion trust fund, established by pressuring Native nations to sign agreements. Most of  these treaties promised that the U.S. would educate Indigenous children in exchange for their land. That wasn't what happened, according to UNLV's Annie Delgado. “The United States government itself knows that these schools did not educate [children] the way they intended to educate.”  The communal trauma of boarding schools still affects Indigenous families across the nation.  “Remaining Native” is still available for community screenings. The Bridging Agency Data Gaps & Ensuring Safety for Native Communities Act has passed the U.S. Senate. It supports the recruitment and retention of Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) law enforcement officers, bolsters federal missing persons resources, and gives Tribes and states tools to combat MMIP. The legislation is led by U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NM), John Hoeven (R-ND), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Mike Rounds (R-SD).   Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. We take a deep dive into the world of AI and music with artists Dylan Heidt and Jeff Dayton.Jeff Dayton is an American musician, singer, producer and songwriter best known as being the bandleader for Glen Campbell and the Jeff Dayton Band for 15 years, plus touring with Kenny Chesney and Lee Greenwood.Dayton performed with club bands in the upper Midwest, including a year with the KO Band, which was fronted by Bob Dylan studio musician Kevin Odegard. Their producer was David Z and their drummer a young Bobby "Z" Rivkin.Dayton moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona and formed the Dayton-Privett Band with Mark Prentice, Tom Sawyer and Ron Privett. After 2 years, Privett left the band, and was replaced with Dave Watson; the band was renamed High Noon Band and continued until the band went their separate ways. Dayton then formed the Jeff Dayton Band, and over time about 100 different musicians performed under that name with Dayton, notably steel guitarist Ed Black, guitarist Bob "Willard" Henke, Grammy award winner producer Michael B (aka Mike Broening), drummer Mickey McGee, banjo player Bruce Leland, drummer Merel Bregante, bassist Doug Haywood, etc.[1][15]High Noon won the Wrangler Country Showdown and the Jeff Dayton Band won the Marlboro Talent Roundup. The JDB was named New Times' Best of the Decade's Best Award.[4] In addition, Dayton wrote and recorded That Lady Can Love which became his first #1 record at KNIX-FM and another song earned a platinum songwriting award for George Strait with "Any Old Time." It's a treat today to chat with ultra runner and acupuncturist Talia Chevassus! Talia talks about her adventures as a run coach, how her interest in running developed over the past few years, and about future goals. She's rearranged her schedule and life to fit her outdoor passion, while balancing acupuncture clients, yoga and making the majority of her food from scratch. Our discussion also covers Quebec trails (hello, technical!), nutrition for endurance sports and for recovery, using yoga to cross-train and stay injury-free, hiring a coach, and Talia's love of travel to explore on her own two feet. It's an inspiring and empowering episode: as she says, the easiest way to keep progressing is to just do what you need to regardless of the weather. That advice holds true no matter which avenue of life we're considering. Today's episode is a neat twist where my coach, Sarah, interviews me about my experience running the 100 miler at Javelina Jundred on October 26-27, 2024, in Fountain Hills, Arizona. We cover a variety of topics including the format of the race, how I felt leading up to it, what clothing and gear I wore, what worked and didn't, and some key takeaways. It was the hottest Javelina on record, with temperatures in the triple digits out on the course. Nearly half of the entrants to the 100 mile and 100 kilometer races did not finish, mostly due to issues resulting from the heat. It was a fun day to be out on trails to test myself: much was learned. I'm profoundly grateful to all the staff and volunteers at Aravaipa Running, the crews and supporters who came out, Maricopa County parks, and to my pacers and crew. A big thanks goes out to Sarah, Tony, Nicole, Jen, Lindsay, Heidi, Elly, Kearstin, Mike, Lee, Jubilee, Tristan, Matt, Joe, Julian and Adam. Some of the highlights of the race are being surprised by my friend Tony, who flew in to see Nicole and pace me; a delicious burger at Jackass Junction from Julian; sharing miles with Jon and Elly; loop 4 with Tony and loop 5 with Sarah; Nicole popping my blisters before loop 4 by headlamp. With a B.F.A for Interior Architecture from Columbia College, she entered the field only to discover that mundane space planning and office environment were too rigid for her free spirit. In 2012 Karolina found her sketch book from college, submitted her drawings to a gallery and got accepted. Two other galleries soon followed. Karolina calls herself an introspective artist, meaning she purges her emotions with inks and graphite onto paper. Throughout her artwork, which includes acrylic paintings, two books and reflection cards, there is a striped socks character used to depict her feelings, emotions and stories. Her art “talks” about love and the happy moments that come with it, and life's struggles and triumphs. Her work visually expresses what it is to be human, depicting emotions in a raw and relatable way that resonate. She says when people view her work, they aren't studying the brushstrokes or the play of light on a subject; they are studying their own struggles, their own blessings, and their own heart. Karolina sketches, draws, and/or paints every day. Creativity, she says, recharges her and fuels her spirit. She calls her work quirky with a touch of sophistication, which reflects her playful, at times scrambled, character on the surface with an intense and serious core. Karolina has been a permanent gallery artist in Scottsdale and Tubac, AZ for the past three years and just recently became part of the Wit Gallery in MA. In addition, she has exhibited her work at Fountain Hills, AZ, Gilbert AZ, and Chicago IL.
