Matthew 5:21–26 (CSB) 21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire. 23 So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

Grudges, you have probably had one, have one now or will be having one soon. Grudges go both ways, someone has one against you and/or you may have one against someone. It is also peculiar that grudges can come from something very simple or small but often festers over time. Jesus talks about grudges in what is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. This message takes a small part of the teaching of Jesus that day and examines what the Bible says about grudges. The message translation actually uses the term grudges. You can see that Jesus quickly connects Grudges with Unforgiveness. Learn how you can work on these in this message. Good luck!

So many Christians don’t know what to do with the Old Testament or how to apply it. Sadly, this results in having a low view of the OT and thats unfortunate because Jesus loved the OT and because in it we see the very character of God. If Jesus is who he claims to be, then his opinion should be very influential in shaping our own. Jesus had a high view of Scripture that included all of the Old Testament. He loved and obeyed it. Like Jesus, followers of His are called to the same care and ethic.

The message given by Jesus and the apostles is very clear – whether our conflicts involve minor irritations or major legal issues, peace and unity are of great importance to God! Peace-making is not an optional activity, especially for Christ-followers, and as we find in Matthew 5:21-26, it has a significant impact on our worship!

Murder is wrong and anger is problematic. Anger allows us to dehumanize someone and it violates the second greatest command to: "love others."

This weekend, we're going to be looking at what Jesus said about anger, in connection with Old Testament commandments about murder. This is an important issue for us today, because many people struggle with controlling their anger, and our society seems to be fraying with mass and social media fueling outrage and hatred.

When Jesus explains the 5th Commandment in the Sermon on the Mount, He invites us to not only look at our outward actions but also the words we say and the thoughts of our hearts. In doing so we realize just how far we fall short of the standard God has set and our great need of forgiveness. Only when we realize just how much we have been forgiven because of Jesus can that forgiveness flow through us to those we have hurt and those who have hurt us.

In our text today, Jesus points out the danger of anger. Anger eats at a person, and is far more serious than anyone may realize. Whether it always lies buried, or whether it erupts, it is dangerous.

Anger leads to destruction. Everyone gets angry. But we need to admit the danger of anger is that is seeks the destruction of someone else in the area of reputation, finances, body, etc. Instead, we are to be people of reconciliation, which is more valuable than worship in the eyes of God.

Everyone gets mad. But when we hold on to it and let it turn into a grudge, it becomes dangerous - spiritually and sometimes physically as well. In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about anger and the need to reconcile with others.

Relationships are very important to every person. Also every person deals with anger. Unfortunately anger can kill relationships. Jesus talks about "the anger that kills" in His sermon on the mount. He gives us some practical ways to deal with anger.
