Sorry for the late posting of this. I hope you find it edifying. These devotions are part of the Follow the Word Bible reading program at St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, Texas. This year we are reading through the Scriptures together, listening for how God speaks through his Word day by day. I hope you will join me on this journey.Today's readings are Deuteronomy 22-24, Psalm 85.
On this episode of Day by Day, our journey through Romans, Dr. Clif episode explores how true obedience to God comes not from legalistic rule-following but from a heart transformed by faith and empowered by the Spirit, as illustrated through Paul's teachings in Romans. Sermon: True Righteousness; Chaplain Lt Col Ret John Hubbs Isaiah 58:1-9 Matthew 5:13-20
This week's message takes us deep into Matthew 6, where Jesus confronts one of the most challenging aspects of our spiritual lives: the difference between genuine righteousness and religious performance. We're challenged to examine whether our acts of devotion—giving to the needy, praying, fasting—are truly for God's glory or subtly designed to earn human applause. The sermon unpacks Jesus' use of the word 'hypocrite,' revealing it doesn't mean someone who says one thing and does another, but rather someone who does the right thing for the wrong reason. This distinction is crucial for us today, especially in our social media-saturated culture where virtue signaling has become commonplace. We're invited to ask ourselves: Are we posting our faith to inspire others toward God, or to position ourselves as morally superior? The message powerfully contrasts secrecy with privacy—secrecy keeps everyone from knowing the real us, while privacy means the right people know the real us. This distinction offers freedom from shame and opens the door to authentic accountability. Ultimately, we're reminded that the greatest reward isn't applause, comfort, or prosperity—it's the presence of Jesus himself, transforming us from the inside out. The closing reading from Matthew 25 drives home the point: true righteousness is demonstrated in how we serve 'the least of these,' not in how loudly we announce our good deeds.
Only God can bring true righteousness and judgement

Who can be truly righteous? Read Ecclesiastes 7:16–29 looks forward to the hearing of God's Word read in the public worship on the coming Lord's Day. In these fourteen verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that Jesus is our only hope for righteousness that is according to God's standard, in God's strength, and unto God's praise. The devotional unpacks Ecclesiastes 7:16–29 as a meditation on the futility of self-righteousness, and the necessity of fearing God as the only true path to righteousness. It corrects a common misinterpretation of verse 16 by emphasizing that the warning is against self-justification—seeking righteousness for one's own glory, strength, or approval—rather than against striving for godly virtue. The passage highlights Solomon's own failure, despite his extraordinary wisdom—demonstrating that human effort, no matter how great, cannot achieve the righteousness God demands. True righteousness is found not in human wisdom or moral striving, but in the fear of the Lord and union with Christ, Who alone is the sinless, upright Man. The passage ultimately points to Jesus as the only perfect human, the one righteous Man among thousands, Whose righteousness cannot be imitated through self-achievement but imputed by grace through faith, and which transforms the believer's life to conform to God's standard, not for self-glory, but for His eternal glory.

In this message, Jesus will proclaim how His teachings were not at odds with the Law of God; but rather, the teachings of the pharisees were. In doing so, we will see how Jesus is the fulfillment of Law, on our behalf, and the very means by which we derive our righteousness before God, apart from our own works. Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20
The book of Romans has been a catalyst for revival — for spiritual awakening and transformation throughout the history of the church. Tim Keller said, "The letter to the Romans is a book that repeatedly changes the world, by changing people."This is part one of our Romans sermon series: The Gospel | Right with God."True Righteousness" is a sermon based on Romans 2:17-29 preached by lead pastor Billy Glosson. This sermon was preached at Mission Church — a church in Morganton, North Carolina in the heart of Burke County.Join us in person on Sundays, 10 AM221 Herron St.Morganton NC, 28655
Peter and Andrew were knee-deep in Lake Galilee. A school of fish swam near shore, so they threw a net into water, dragging out whatever it collected. Jesus, walking the shore that morning, stopped and called to them. When they turned and looked at him, he said, “Follow me.” It was as if they were waiting for that moment, because they dropped everything to go with him. As Matthew tells the story, it was not long after they got the call that they were sitting on a nearby mountainside, listening to Jesus teaching lessons on True Righteousness and how to walk that spiritual path. They heard, first the Beatitudes, then the impossible requirement (5:20), after that Jesus ran through several examples of what the True Righteous looks like. Now Jesus takes them to a new gate, where written on a sign hanging from it was the word “Beware.”
Righteousness begins with a right standing before God through justification and walking in a right relationship with him. Subscribe to daily devotions e-mails: https://wcm.link/ddsub

Luke 13:10-21 // Jesus shows that his kingdom is advancing, but it advances by way of the mercy of God extended to those in need. How we participate in the mission of Jesus matters greatly. Acts of mercy demonstrate that the substance of God's kingdom is justice and righteousness, and no matter how small or ordinary the mercy of God enacted works powerfully to the realization of “on earth as it is in heaven.”

Some of you are old enough to remember the hymn that proclaims. All to Him I owe - sin has left a crimson stain He washes white as snow. I suspect the writer of that familiar verse could have received some inspiration from Romans chapter three - the passage in front of us today. And for some inspiration of our own let's join Pastor John Randall as he focuses on the depravity of man, and the answer to our sin problem.
