Manage Difficult Conversations & Meetings The 3-step script to calm angry people (ignore words, read feelings, label) Episode 273 (Doug is based in California) In this conversation we explore… https://dougnoll.com/why decisions are emotional and what that means for leadership credibility the 92-second reset protocol that calms intense situations fast a three-step method: ignore words, read emotions, reflect with “you” statements the brain science behind affect labeling and rapid de-escalation why “active listening” backfires and how to respond effectively instead the four relaxation signals that tell you it's safe to problem-solve adopting a compassionate mindset to neutralize personal attacks evidence from prisons to boardrooms proving the method's transferability how to prepare for tough meetings with self-labeling and emotion maps a practical path to mastery in 8–12 weeks with deliberate practice ----- About our guest, Doug Noll: Doug was born with a set of difficult disabilities: nearly visually blind, color blind, two club feet, poor teeth, left-handed, and too smart for his own good. He found his life's calling at 50 years of age when he left a successful civil trial practice to become a peacemaker, mediator, author, and teacher. Free Offer: Peace Under Pressure Kit The kit consists of my De-Escalate Advisor, which is a ChatGPT agent that will help you work through intense emotions, my 4- week online video course Dealing With Anger and Aggression, and an invitation to my free Stop Arguments Cold Skool Community. Either DM me on LinkedIn or Facebook @douglasnoll on Instagram @douglasenoll with YOUR INTENDED MESSAGE 25. https://dougnoll.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/dougnoll/ https://www.instagram.com/douglasenoll/ ----- Key learning points: Emotions drive decisions; treat people as emotional beings first. The 92-second reset protocol (ignore words, read emotions, reflect with “you” statements) reliably calms people. Affect labeling interrupts the amygdala and engages executive function. Avoid “active listening” formulas; use plain “you feel…” reflections instead. Wait for the four relaxation cues before problem-solving. Mindset shift: see attacks as emotions, not truth; respond with compassion. Practice builds automaticity; mastery is achievable in ~8–12 weeks. These skills scale from prisons to boardrooms and change behavior system-wide. Self-labeling (silently) stabilizes you during tough meetings. Preparation: pre-name likely emotions—yours and theirs—before you enter the room. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. Anger is an emotion we often struggle to navigate. In this solo episode, I'm sharing the recent experience of one of my clients, who was grappling with intense feelings of anger. As a psychologist, I recognise that anger often masks deeper vulnerabilities like sadness and fear, but this episode isn't just about identifying what's underneath anger; it's about understanding the importance of expressing our anger in healthy ways. Many of us, particularly women, have been socialised to suppress anger, and unresolved anger impacts our own physical and mental health. I emphasise in this episode that anger has a purpose, and that is to alert us to injustice and motivate us to take action. Therefore, it's crucial to acknowledge and express our anger rather than bottle it up.I provide practical advice on how to navigate these feelings, and the importance of clear, assertive communication without veering into aggression. By sharing my client's experience (with her permission), I hope to encourage you to embrace your anger as a valid emotion and learn to express it constructively. This isn't just about venting but learning to advocate for yourself, communicating with intention, and ultimately finding resolution, whether that be with another person, or within yourself.Takeaways:Anger often serves as a protector, alerting us to deeper vulnerabilities that we need to address. We need to find healthier ways to express anger rather than suppressing or denying itIt's crucial for us to differentiate between being assertive and being aggressive in our communication.Expressing anger constructively involves being clear about our feelings without resorting to accusations.Understanding that anger is a natural emotion, and learning how to express it can improve our well-being.Beyond Confident is an online, small group coaching program that helps you to overcome self-doubt and imposter syndrome and cultivate unshakeable self-confidence. Exploring how to make relationships better. Whether it's our natural family or our church family, loving people is crucial to living a Godly life.
In all my years in ministry, one of the more consistent problems people deal with is anger. No one wants to be or become an angry person because of all the damage it can do to a life or relationship. Jesus will now take us further into the sermon on the mount and deal with anger. And what is crazy is He equates it with murder. I find that both interesting and troubling. Welcome to Real Food Recovery, a podcast created by two lifelong processed food addicts with over 100 years of addiction (and recovery) between them. Paige Alexander and Jamie Morgan Reno use their Real Food Recovery podcast and social media channels to share their struggles, lessons learned, tools, tips, and resources that freed them from decades of food addiction, obsession, and loss. In this episode, we're diving into a topic that is often overlooked in food addiction recovery but can be a powerful game-changer: and that's how anger can link itself to addiction. We all know that when we're trying to recover from ultra-processed food addiction, there's so much more to it than just “stopping” eating certain foods. The mental and emotional hurdles can be some of the biggest obstacles we face, and today we want to talk about one of those hurdles—the anger aspect. How do we manage it, and why is it so critical in our recovery? In every Real Food Recovery episode, Paige and Jamie take time to answer viewer questions about processed food addiction, obsession, and recovery, be sure to submit yours on their YouTube Channel or Facebook Page. Fr. Carter Griffin joins Patrick to discuss Dealing with Anger When is anger good and when is anger bad? (7:23) Patty - I found something that was appalling. I walked away. I don't know if that was the right thing. It angered me later because I should have done or said something. When do you step out and say something when you've seen something awful? Nick - I blow my top at the stupidest things. Still dealing with a foul mouth. Some things I refer to is some of the most potent scripture that combats it. If we can think of the heavenly virtues that combat that in the moment of anger. (20:00) Bridget - In my late 60's. Always have had a problem with anger. I've learned how not to get angry anymore and it's a game changer. It has made my life and everyone else's much better. (26:59) Break 1 How do we find our triggers of anger? (40:18) Kathy - I'm a convert married to a man who is very angry. Always complaining, yelling, etc. How can I deal with that?

If you're angry, is it better to bottle it up or lash out in retaliation? Do you get stuck in a loop thinking of things you should say to that jerk who pissed you off? And how is emotional constipation draining our aliveness and motivation? In this conversation, Alyson and I discuss the problems that arise with anger. For many, we feel stuck — if we say something with anger it might make the situation worse. But if we bottle it up, we become a toxic balloon that could burst at any moment. So today we explore what really drives our anger in hopes that we can find a more productive way to deal with it. https://www.thenewmanpodcast.com/2024/09/dealing-with-anger COACHING → To learn more about coaching with Tripp Lanier visit https://TrippLanier.com → To learn more about working with Alyson Lanier visit https://AlysonLanier.com BOOK → We live in a world with more possibilities than ever before.
