The JTS Commentary for Aharei Mot - Kedoshim by Jonah Guthartz, Emerging Leaders Fellow, JTSMusic provided by JJReinhold / Pond5
“I hate you.” If you've ever heard those words from your child, you know how painful and jarring they can be. In this episode of Family Vision, Rob and Amy Rienow continue their series on the Ten Commandments with a deep dive into the Sixth Commandment—“You shall not murder”—and how Jesus reveals that anger and hatred in the heart are spiritual expressions of that same sin. They unpack what it means for parents and children to struggle with anger, bitterness, and hatred—and how we can proactively disciple our families toward healing, grace, and reconciliation. This is a timely conversation for any parent dealing with emotional outbursts, strained relationships, or the heartache of children turning away. What You'll Learn in This Episode: - Why anger and hatred are spiritual violations of the Sixth Commandment - What to do when your child says “I hate you” - How the words we use—like “idiot” or “hate”—reveal the condition of our hearts - The cultural danger of justifying hatred in the name of righteousness - A biblical strategy to help children (and parents) find freedom from anger Featured Resources: Free MP3 Seminar — Helping Your Child Find Freedom from Anger: https://visionaryfam.com/freedom Visionary Family Camp — Join us at Cedar Bay, July 19–25. When you've been hurt and there's bitterness and you want to hold a grudge, the way of Jesus is forgiveness. And when it wakes you up at night, the answer is forgiveness. Rest is found in forgiveness. Forgiving someone doesn't mean that you invite them back into your life. Forgiving someone doesn't mean you set yourself up to be hurt again. The whole point of Jesus's way is to move forward, not to keep looking over your shoulder at the past.
This study explores the destructive power of resentment by examining Esau's grudge against Jacob (Genesis 27) and Cain's anger toward Abel (Genesis 4). Unchecked emotions can lead to hatred and potential violence. However, God's Word (particularly, the Golden Rule) offers a transformative path: choose love over vengeance, seek reconciliation and allow God's Spirit to heal wounds. By mastering our impulses and embracing forgiveness, we can break cycles of bitterness and experience divine restoration.

As we go through life, we're constantly trying to figure out what other people are thinking and feeling. Psychologist Liane Young says this ability to assess other people's thoughts is an extraordinary feat of cognition. This week, in a favorite episode from our archives, we explore this mental superpower — and how it can lead us astray. In our conversation with Liane Young, we explore:*The uniquely human ability to think about the minds of other people, which scientists refer to as "theory of mind." *How and when young children develop this ability to intuit what's happening in other people's minds. *Why our understanding of other people's minds affects our moral judgments — and how those judgments can be disabled.*How misreading another person's intentions can affect our lives in both small and significant ways. Then, in the second part of this week's show, we welcome back researcher Fred Luskin, who responds to listeners' questions about grudges. If you missed the original conversation with Fred Luskin, listen to our episode No Hard Feelings.
Thom Francis introduces us to poets Susan Kress and Will Nixon. Both of whom were finalists in the 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize Contest. -------- The 2025 Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize winners and finalists were recently announced with many poets from the Capital Region and Hudson Valley included in the list. The DiBiase contest was created in 2015 to offer a more inclusive and welcoming alternative to traditional poetry competitions. There are no entry fees, no line or page limits, and no restrictions on subject matter, form, publication history, or age, making it especially appealing to younger poets. Each year, approximately $2,500 in prize money is awarded, with $500 going to the first-place winner and the rest distributed among top finishers. Last week we heard from finalist Howard Kogan, who shared his poem, “Mourning Becomes Her.” This week we will hear from Hudson Valley Writers Guild members Susan Kress and Will Nixon. First up is Susan Kress. Her poem “Fire-Proof Box” was an Honorable Mention in this years contest. Before she reads her poem, she tells me more about the inspiration of the piece. Susan Kress was born and educated in England and now lives in Saratoga Springs, NY, having taught at Skidmore College for many years. Her poems appear in Nimrod International, The Southern Review, New Ohio Review, Salmagundi, New Letters, South Florida Poetry Journal, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Third Wednesday, Gyroscope Review, La Presa, and other journals. The next poet up to the mic is Will Nixon who will read his poem “Orpheum.” Will Nixon is the author of the poetry collections, “My Late Mother as a Ruffed Grouse” and “Love in the City of Grudges.” With Michael Perkins he is the co-author of “Walking Woodstock: Journeys into the Wild Heart of America's Most Famous Small Town.” He has also written “The Pocket Guide to Woodstock.” He now lives in Kingston, NY. For more information on the Stephen A DiBiase Poetry Prize and to read the poems from the winners, finalists, and honorable mentions, go to https://dibiasepoetry.com.

Expectation is a funny word. It means that we think something should happen a certain way or that someone should behave in a certain way, two things we rarely, if ever, have control over. What I've found is that expectations I have are often a cause of shame for the other person, and also for me. And shame is never a productive emotion. And yet, it's hard not to have expectations. So, how do we move away from the expectations we feel entitled to have and instead offer more grace for humanity and more kindness for struggle? Thanks for listening! Tik Tok and data acquisition, scary topics on China up ahead. Michael Krasny featured leading Sinologist Orville Schell and began by asking Schell for his response to the Trump administration's imposed tariffs and their potential effects on a possible trade war, fentanyl out of China and U.S. China relations. Schell spoke of Xi Jinping's irrational actions and what appears to bind him and Putin together and Krasny asked Schell if he foresaw a role for Beijing brokering a peace between Russia and Ukraine. Krasny then proceeded to ask Schell about Tik Tok, data acquisition by China, Chinese surveillance and the AI race and Schell spoke of what he called "unequal relationships."Krasny asked Schell about China's persecution of the Uyghurs and whether it can be labeled as genocide. A subsequent listener question brought up population growth in China and what its effects are likely to be on the country's economic future. Schell addressed the question by speaking of China's internal labor shortage and its policy of not taking in immigrants, which he called a time bomb. Krasny then asked Schell to talk about soft power and Chinese projects in developing and third world nations as well as what profits accrued to U.S. politicians or Elon Musk via China.A discussion followed centering on the EV market in China and globally and on Teslas and the presence of Apple in China. China's ongoing role as a major market and geopolitical force then followed. Krasny wanted to know from Schell how much of a threat China posed and the status of ongoing tensions with Japan. The two spoke of long-term China grievances and grudges. After this decidedly rich and wide ranging discussion Krasny asked Schell about his recently published novel My Old Home, thirty-five years in the making, which centers on music and the cultural revolution. The two then wound up discussing the ongoing effects of the cultural revolution and China's leader Xi Jinping.
