What happens when you keep accumulating more and more? Ever fear that you won’t have enough? Do you struggle to give and share? Greed shows up in many ways and forms in our world today. But, for many people, they wonder, “is greed so bad?” In this message, Pastor Scott Savage continues our 7 Deadly Sins series by exploring how we can choose an alternative path to greed.
When a pastor is wearing a $2,000 sweater or a $4,000 pair of shoes in an Instagram post, there's a problem. Most folks would say that pastor is crossing a line. But what's true of pastors is true of everyone else. There's a line between a need and a want. There's a line between what's reasonable and what's excessive or extravagant. And that line is virtually impossible for us to see when it comes to our lives and our decisions. In this message, Max Vanderpool tackles the sin of greed and why we don't like greedy people.

Sarah Schneider Watson, co-lead pastor, is speaking on the discipline of simplicity. How do we live lives filled with contentment? How do we keep our eyes focused on Jesus (and not on stuff)? Learning to value simplicity leads us in the right direction.

All of us heard things about money growing up. We learned things ourselves. And we had to navigate hard times. In that process, we developed stories we believed about money. The question is, though, whether or not the story you’re telling is helpful. In this message, Scott Savage kicks off our our new series on money by talking about the broken stories we believe about money and what happens when we begin recognizing that a new story is available to us.

If I could just move up to that pay scale, then I would be okay... If I only made what they made... I wish I could have... So often when we begin to think about money or finances, we are ensnared with ideas of greed and envy. It is something we try to do, yet over and over, we continue to be trapped with wishes and desires for more. Listen in for the real secret to being rich.

The average American man owns 12 pairs of shoes. The average American woman owns 27 pairs of shoes. The average person living in many countries on the continent of Africa or in certain provinces of India or China owns ONE pair of shoes. How many shoes are enough? And is the stuff you own making your life EASIER or HARDER to manage? In this message, Max Vanderpool teaches an important life truth that Jesus articulated in Luke 12. It's one of the best ways to have FINANCIAL SMARTS.

When Jesus was asked to solve an issue of inheritance, He declined. Instead, he told a parable about a very wealthy man who was about to die. Material wealth can be a god. Covetousness is our worship of it. What really matters is if we are rich toward God. Are our treasures in heaven or will we leave them all behind when we die?

Covetousness is our worship of it. What really matters is if we are rich toward God. Are our treasures in heaven or will we leave them all behind when we die?
Luke 12:13-21 (CEB) 13 Someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14 Jesus said to him, "Man, who appointed me as judge or referee between you and your brother?" 15 Then Jesus said to them, "Watch out! Guard yourself against all kinds of greed. After all, one's life isn't determined by one's possessions, even when someone is very wealthy." 16 Then he told them a parable: "A certain rich man's land produced a bountiful crop. 17 He said to himself, What will I do? I have no place to store my harvest! 18 Then he thought, Here's what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. That's where I'll store all my grain and goods. 19 I'll say to myself, You have stored up plenty of goods, enough for several years. Take it easy! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool, tonight you will die. Now who will get the things you have prepared for yourself?' 21 This is the way it will be for those who hoard things for themselves and aren't rich toward God."
True contentment and eternal value cannot be achieved by accumulating as many riches and wealth as possible while we are living. It may bring enjoyment here temporarily but the cold truth is that you cannot take it with you after death. So while you and I are here, let’s make the most of our time and resources instead of being foolish with it. Sermon Notes @ http://bible.com/events/669098
