Jason and Krystal take you behind the scenes of the Charlotte and Knoxville workshops! From lighting models through the slats of a mule barn with continuous LEDs to transforming a shuttered country bar into a cinematic playground using flash, fans, and modifiers, This episode is packed with practical photography lessons and unforgettable road stories. Hear how the MagMod gear helped shape the shoots, how workshop attendees learned to adapt when the "perfect" gear wasn't available, and why turning a monolight into a constant light source can save the day.Along the way, there was an impromptu brake replacement in an AutoZone parking lot, a mosquito-infested posing session in Knoxville, a two-light flash setup that lit up an entire forest, and a nighttime LED shoot in front of the iconic Tennessee Theatre while fending off curious scooter riders determined to get Krystal's attention. The road trip wraps up with great sushi, great memories, and a look ahead to San Francisco, an upcoming Iceland scouting trip, and the next round of Mini Masterclasses coming soon to the Pacific Northwest and beyond.Real Talk. A rainy spring turned into a packed season at The Barns of Rose Hill. On this Tourism Tuesday Berryville/Clarke County edition of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael catches up with Martha Reynolds, Executive Director of The Barns of Rose Hill, to walk through what's coming next — and there is a lot. Two simultaneous gallery exhibitions, a VA250 concert series tied to traditional American roots music, a folk opera that's already sold out twice, and a benefit concert from a beloved local artist on the way. Martha previews everything from Color Stories (vivid contemporary stripes) and Jackson Foster's historic tavern signs to The Quiet Vast photography exhibit to a Portuguese artist who pairs her work with QR-coded music. Plus: the Forging a Nation film series with American Legion Post 41, Jules & the Agreeables benefit concert on June 27, Larry Keel and Jon Stickley's flatpicking bluegrass on 7/11, the return of the Orange on the Blue Ridge folk opera in August, and the final stretch of a 10-year endowment campaign that wraps August 31st — every dollar matched by the Eugene B. Casey Foundation. The Barns turns 15 in September, and the gala that closes the campaign is shaping up to be the celebration of the year. On this Friggin' Farm & Ranch Report for Monday, June 1, 2026, I walk through a day where the board got its teeth kicked in and the barn didn't blink. June live cattle closed around 240, down over 11 bucks on the day, while the 5‑area cash trade is still printing in the mid‑250s, leaving roughly a $16 gap between paper and real cattle headed to a real kill plant. We talk placements, 11.6 million head on feed, almost 2 million head over 180 days, packer discounts on heavy carcasses, and what that means for feedlot leverage and your fall outlook. On the grain side, Kansas City hard red winter wheat just took a 23‑cent haircut after USDA's May WASDE printed a 1.56‑billion‑bushel all‑wheat crop with only 15% of Kansas rated good to excellent – disaster numbers that still have to pencil through your hay and grazing plans. Then we hit diesel at the $5.50 floor, fertilizer up 40–47% since February, Iran threatening both Hormuz and Bab el‑Mandeb, screwworm creeping to within about 30 miles of the border, and the latest on Farm Bill, mCOOL, and base‑acre decisions. In this episode, we talk with Danielle Keperling of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County about an important local preservation effort—saving the historic Hoober Eby Barn. Built in 1860, this remarkable timber-frame structure is a rare surviving example of Lancaster County's agricultural heritage, showcasing original craftsmanship, traditional joinery, and distinctive rural architecture.also, on the program, we're joined by Amyra Weiss—Chief Communications Visionary, storyteller, and organizer of Architecture Week 2026 with AIA Pennsylvania—alongside Board President Elysia Mikkelsen. They discuss how Architecture Week earned a statewide proclamation (April 12–18, 2026) and mobilized an incredible grassroots effort: over 60 volunteers hosting 45 library story hours across 23 counties. The initiative reached communities statewide with thoughtfully prepared kits—featuring the book Iggy Peck, Architect, hands-on design activities, certificates for future architects, and themed materials for young learners.
Chris 'Brolga' Barns fell in love with joeys and became a kangaroo 'mum'. He rescues orphaned baby kangaroos, or joeys, carrying them around in a pillowcase to mimic their mum's pouch. While working as a tour guide in the Australian outback, Brolga would always check the pouches of kangaroos killed by cars lying on the side of the road, where often the joeys would still be alive. The plan was to look after them until they could be released back into the wild, but sometimes they had been injured and couldn't outrun dingoes or bush fires. So Brolga gave up his job to create a kangaroo sanctuary for them in Alice Springs, in Australia's red centre. After leading some land and digging for 18 months to build a giant dingo-proof fence, he spent all his money. He ended up living in a tin shack on site, without any electricity or a toilet, sharing his bed with the orphaned joeys he was caring for. But the visitors he had hoped for did not come, and he had no income. Things were looking bleak. Then he starred in a BBC documentary series called Kangaroo Dundee. The title was a play on the hit comedy film Crocodile Dundee, about a man from the outback who wows everyone in the big city. Brolga's TV appearance wowed too - much to his surprise, he received hundreds of emails from female fans, who were unaware that he had a brand-new girlfriend (now his wife). The show guaranteed the Kangaroo Sanctuary's survival, and Brolga was able to dedicate all his time to mothering orphaned joeys. One of his first rescues, an alpha male kangaroo called Roger, became an internet sensation for always trying to attack his 'mum', Brolga, who he now saw as a rival. And recently some of Brolga's joeys starred in a family film called Kangaroo, inspired by his life. Livestock sale barns are often thought of as places where cattle are bought and sold. But for many producers, they also serve as important gathering spaces — places to exchange information, build relationships, and stay connected in an industry that can be isolating at times. In this episode of Nebraska FARMcast, Ryan Evans talks with Marilyn Schlake and Dr. Cheryl Burkhart-Kriesel of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Nebraska Extension about their new research on the social value of livestock sale barns in Nebraska. The conversation explores what they observed on sale days, what producers told them about connection and mental well-being, and why these spaces matter to both individuals and rural communities. The research is summarized in the report Beyond the Auction: The Social Impacts of Nebraska's Livestock Sale Barns, available from the Center for Agricultural Profitability.
In this episode, Bill Betts sits down with Carl, the founder of Woodfarm Barns and Barges, to explore the fascinating journey of building a dog-friendly holiday accommodation business that truly goes beyond the basics.Carl shares how he left the corporate world behind to pursue a passion for hospitality and property renovation, ultimately creating a collection of high-end, dog-welcoming retreats in the Suffolk countryside and on the water. But as Carl points out, there's a big difference between being dog-tolerant and genuinely dog-friendly.The conversation dives into the mindset shift required to serve pet owners well, how Carl learned to embrace dog culture, and why attention to detail and personal connection are key to customer loyalty in the hospitality industry. This is a great episode for groomers looking to unwind, business owners exploring diversification, or anyone who loves a behind-the-scenes look at turning passion into profit—with dogs at the heart of it all.

Weeds remained an evolving challenge for Wisconsin farmers. Jill Welke gets a recap from UW-Extension Weed Specialist, Dr. Rodrigo Werle. Werle's making his rounds statewide sharing what they learned this growing season. He says there were some breakthroughs this year that proved to be challenging. Those breakthroughs were weeds overcoming existing chemistry to keep growing. Werle says he's got a long list of projects to try and get grower answers for 2026. Above average temperatures will make a white Christmas unlikely in many areas of Wisconsin. Stu Muck explains what's acting as the catalyst for this late December warm-up. Time for another Mid-West Farm Report Ride-A-Long. An opportunity to accept invitations to find out about the latest technology and innovations Wisconsin farmers are evaluating and using. Today we travel to Malta, IL and the site of the Syngenta Seeds Research and Development Innovation Center. Pam Jahnke finds out about the length of time required to develop products like the new Durastak corn rootworm tool. Drew Showalter, Head, Corn Portfolio Strategy, tells Pam about the evolution of the product and why it's a game-changer for Wisconsin farmers. Paid for by Syngenta. On Friday Wisconsin animal health officials announced the genomic sequencing information gathered from the H5N1 positive herd in Dodge County. Pam Jahnke reports that the genotype was found to be D1.1, a spillover from wildlife into dairy cattle. This is new and no connected to previous detections that trace their strain to an outbreak in the Texas Panhandle. Wisconsin's seen no new dairy detections and continues to rigorously monitor dairies through the National Milk Testing Strategy. A new bipartisan bill introduced on Friday could provide hope for wedding barn operators in 2026. The bill LRB-2567 would roll back 2023 Act 73 that restricts venues to six alcohol-consuming events annually. Jean Bahn, operator of Farmview Event Center in rural Green Lake County says potential clients do not like having their event restricted. She says she's lost business because people want to be able to feature alcohol as a guests option. Bahn had previously filed suit against the state claiming Act 73 was unconstitutional and designed to put her out of business. When a court ruling went against her motion last month, this new bipartisan bill became a last ray of hope for retaining business in 2026.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As the winter chill settles over Berryville, the Barns of Rose Hill is anything but dormant. In this episode of "Tourism Tuesday" on The Valley Today, host Janet Michael talks with Executive Director Martha Reynolds to discuss the dynamic calendar of events, exhibits, and community initiatives that will keep the arts alive and thriving well into 2026. From innovative art collaborations to milestone anniversaries, the Barns is poised to be a cultural beacon for the region. Winter Exhibits and Artistic Collaborations Despite the common perception that winter is a slow season for the arts, Martha reveals that it's actually one of the busiest times at the Barns. The season kicks off with a unique collaboration with the Firehouse Gallery, featuring a collective of artists from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. This exhibit, ideal for holiday gift-giving, showcases a diverse array of media—from pen and ink to watercolor, photography, and jewelry. Following this, local artist Jim Haller will present a meditative stippling exhibit, offering visitors a narrative-rich visual experience. Looking ahead, the Barns will spotlight emerging talent through its partnership with the Clarke County High School IB Art Program and a special exhibition by rising artist Kristin Fiorvanti. These initiatives underscore the organization's commitment to nurturing new voices and providing a platform for creative experimentation. Celebrating Milestones: VA250 and the Barns' 15th Anniversary The coming year is especially significant as it marks both the 250th anniversary of the nation and the 15th anniversary of the Barns of Rose Hill. Martha shares her excitement about the Clarke County VA250 committee's collaborative efforts, which will bring a wide variety of programs to the community. Highlights include a kickoff event at Chilly Hollow Brewing Company, a book talk on the Saratoga battle, and a concert series exploring the roots of American music. The Barns will also host a film series in partnership with the American Legion, ensuring there's something for everyone during this historic celebration. Music for Every Taste: Bluegrass, Barbecue, and Beyond Music lovers have much to look forward to, as the Barns' popular Bluegrass and BBQ series returns with crowd favorites like the Plate Scrapers and newcomers such as indie folk cellist Ollella and bluegrass band Damn Tall Buildings. Martha emphasizes the importance of breaking down genre barriers, encouraging audiences to experience the full spectrum of musical styles—from traditional Appalachian tunes to contemporary indie folk. The series not only entertains but also fosters a sense of community and shared appreciation for the arts. Supporting the Arts: The Power of Community Involvement Throughout the conversation, both Janet and Martha stress the vital role of community support in sustaining the Barns' robust programming. Year-end giving, memberships, and ticket sales are crucial for funding concerts, exhibits, and educational initiatives. The Barns also encourages residents to shop local and consider gift memberships, which offer exclusive benefits and help keep the arts accessible to all. As the Barns approaches its 15th anniversary and the conclusion of a decade-long endowment campaign, Martha reflects on the organization's growth and the importance of community engagement. She invites everyone to share their favorite memories and stories, reinforcing the idea that the Barns of Rose Hill is, above all, a community-driven institution. Stay Connected and Get Involved For those eager to stay up to date, Martha recommends visiting barnsofrosehill.org and following the Barns on Facebook. With a full calendar of events, regular newsletters, and a growing online presence, the Barns ensures that no one misses out on the vibrant cultural life of Berryville and Clarke County. The Barns of Rose Hill stands as a testament to the power of art, music, and community. As it enters a milestone year, the organization invites everyone—residents and visitors alike—to join in celebrating creativity, history, and the enduring spirit of collaboration that defines this special place.

Send us a textReady for a clearer path through post-frame and metal buildings? We dig into what actually builds trust—real accreditation, transparent design tools, and partnerships you can visit, walk, and verify. Fresh from a plant tour at Graber Post and gearing up for the NFBA Conference, we map out how dealers can stay indispensable while manufacturers inch toward direct sales. We start with the practical: NFBA dates, hotel tips, and why the association's classes and accreditation raise the bar for pole barns. Then we get hands-on. SmartBuild lets us design to the screw so change orders don't derail budgets, and IdeaRoom brings customers into the 3D process without confusing the scope. Watching trusses move from pre-cut lumber to finished assemblies inside a clean, organized facility made one point impossible to miss—quality is a system. When your operations, subs, and suppliers are aligned, turnkey stops being a promise and becomes the only way you work.We also face the hard truths. In a market where four quotes cluster around 20k and one outlier dangles 16.5k, the risk isn't just price—it's lost time, weak engineering, and vanished refunds. That's why we push for standards in metal buildings and sheds, similar to what NFBA has done for post-frame. Until a strong association exists, dealers must self-govern with clear scopes, milestone payments, documented engineering, and consistent updates. Pair that with disciplined geography, vetted subs, and SEO that brings in qualified buyers, and you've got an engine that survives manufacturer shifts.Along the way we share new partnerships sparked at trade shows, our expanding content plans, and a few personal notes on community work and staying focused through slow season. If you sell sheds, carports, or pole barns, this is a roadmap for 2026: get accredited where possible, design transparently, manage projects tightly, and build alliances that last. Enjoy the ride, then help us raise the standard across the industry. For more information or to know more about the Shed Geek Podcast visit us at our website.Would you like to receive our weekly newsletter? Andrew Luzum—a farmer, conservation advocate, and strategic agronomist—to explore how traditional values and modern innovation can work hand in hand to sustain agriculture for generations to come.Andrew shares how his family operation, rooted near a trout hatchery in Winneshiek County, has made water quality and environmental responsibility central to their mission. Knowing that their farm directly impacts local waterways, Andrew emphasizes a personal commitment to stewardship: “We have a tremendous influence on the quality of water that comes out of those springs, and I feel a responsibility to do my part.”We also dive into Andrew's professional journey with Corteva Agriscience, where he's spent nearly a decade advancing through roles in crop protection, territory management, and now as a Nutrient Maximizer Strategic Account Manager. He explains how this role supports farmers in optimizing fertility efficiency, improving return on investment, and protecting soil health through science-based solutions.Listeners will hear about:How Andrew's upbringing on a diverse dairy and livestock farm shaped his leadership style and work ethic. His experience experimenting with cover crops and the lessons learned from integrating them into a working cow-calf and row-crop system. The link between data-driven agronomy and environmental outcomes, and how Corteva's nutrient maximizer tools are helping farms do more with less. His perspective as an Iowa Corn Animal Agriculture and Environment Committee member—bridging farmers, science, and policy. The episode closes with a reflection on what “profit” really means in modern agriculture: not just financial returns, but long-term resilience, cleaner water, and stronger rural communities.
