This is the third follow-up podcast from my interview with Mike Brevik. I just want to flesh out a bit more of a point that he brought up in his interview that I think is so valuable: he talked about how we are not done with the process yet. He's about five or six months into the program which is actually in the last phase, the final phase of the program, so we're getting close. Today, I will talk about that phase and Mike's experience with the program. The Blueprint Process host Tammi Brannan has a unique ability to see people's potential and success clues before they do.Throughout these conversations, you'll hear people's BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal - her favorite thing) and you may even identify your BHAG while you listen. In this Hasty Treat, Scott and Wes talk about React Suspense — what it is, how it works, support and more! Sentry - Sponsor If you want to know what’s happening with your errors, track them with Sentry. Sentry is open-source error tracking that helps developers monitor and fix crashes in real time. Cut your time on error resolution from five hours to five minutes. It works with any language and integrates with dozens of other services. Syntax listeners can get two months for free by visiting Sentry.io and using the coupon code “tastytreat”. Show Notes Not live yet - it may/will change. Be warned! 3:59 - The problem we have with React right now API calls Image loading Code splitting 7:16 - What is React Suspense? First we convert our async data fetching functions into resources Resources can then be read inside render - above the return Resources can be read from cache Resources can be preloaded into a cache if you anticipate needing them Resources reads are blocking for that function - you can’t return JSX until the resource is read In your component that fetches data, there is no need to maintain a loading state Then, anywhere higher up in that tree, you can introduce a suspense component The suspense component can detect if any of it’s children are currently loading data If they are, we can then choose to show a loader via the fallback prop We can also choose to show nothing via the maxDelay prop — this is helpful for fast connections that shouldn’t see the spinner for a short split-second 15:20 - Support React.lazy and suspense for code splitting is already here The React.lazy function lets you render a dynamic import as a regular component Loadable Components is recommended if you need splitting with SSR Data Resources is not here yet Links React 16.x Roadmap Tweet us your tasty treats! There is a change in mindset required from anyone who has run a service-based industry (such as a consultancy), who moves into a fast-growing SaaS business. The key difference is 'margin' vs 'growth'. There is little point in raising money if all it does it sit in the bank. But there is a balance. How do you manage the demands of growth and efficiency? And does your background mean that you might veer towards being too risk averse at a time when you should be pushing harder? Mark and David discuss how they've dealt with this from their persepctive. To an extent, until you at least get to Series A and several $millions in ARR, you probably need to be in cash conservation mode as you are still experimenting and trying to prove your assumptions. But at the same time, the aim isn't to conserve enough cash that you become profitable too early. --- Show Notes:Not mentioned in the podcast, but for those interested, there is a really good slide presentation here from David Skork about the different phases of a Startup, and when you should move from 'burn avoidance mode': https://www.forentrepreneurs.com/saas-north-2017/ --- Find out about ScreenCloud: screen.cloud hello@screen.cloud
