Ten years of weekly podcasting, 569 published posts, and I am still going strong connecting to you, my listeners. And, it's time for one of my favorite posts of the year, my annual holiday message. Today's message is kind of personal and equally important. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Image complements of Pixabay Musical Intro Why Healthcare for Doc Smo? As a child, I had no idea that I could or would turn out to be a doctor. I liked math and science in school but mainly I wanted to be outside playing sports. When I got to college, I was forced to confront the question, "What am I going to do with this fancy education I am getting and what am I going to do with the rest of my life?" My strengths were in math, science, and... hard work. The latter being the most important. I was an overachiever who knew my most powerful weapon was a good work ethic and persistence. Hard work and persistence were my secret weapons that had taught me that if I wanted something enough, I could get it with sheer determination. A career in medicine came up on my radar as a career path, initially, because a full 50% of my undergraduate class were pre-med.Maybe I could do that? We all tend to want others around us want, right? So, I set out to find out if it was for me. As an undergraduate, I volunteered at a VA pharmacy, I worked summers in a neurosurgeon's research lab doing dog and cat experiments, I got a part time job in a neurology lab doing some of the earliest research on brain neuro-transmitters, and I helped staff a free community medical clinic for disadvantaged residents in Durham, NC. The more I explored the world of healthcare, the more intrigued I became. Yes, medicine was going to be my path I thought. I remember coming home during my 4th year of medical school and having a conversation with my father about my future. It's in your fourth year that you have to choose a residency specialty. Its fish or cut bait time for a major life decision. I had decided on pediatrics for two reasons... I enjoyed taking care of acute illness in patients, children, who had incredible powers to bounce back from adversity and I loved the energy that children gave off. I just liked being around them. When I told my father of my decision I'll never forget his response, "You have a license that allows you to do brain surgery and you are going to do what with it?" I explained my reasoning and he just listened. I knew what he was thinking though; he thought I was crazy to go into the lowest paying medical specialty that carried little status when I could have so much more. But to his credit, he never said another thing about my choice. He supported me in my decision. When the time came to start my residency, he even helped drive the 16 hours’ drive to my new life as a budding pediatrician. The Reality of the Job Pediatrics turned out to be everything I expected-lots of acute life-threatening illness where quick action rescued a lot of little souls. I was literally saving and changing lives on a daily basis. As my skills grew, the job became even more satisfying. When I entered the world of private practice and was making important decisions without supervision, I knew I had arrived. I was even beginning to get enough life experience to help children and families work through psychological stress and grow. Oh sure, there is a lot not to like about primary care pediatrics in those days, 80-hour work weeks, middle of the night trips to delivery rooms and EDs, and the nearly constant intrusion of phone calls. But underneath all that, there was the knowledge that I was doing something important to improve people's lives. I was helping my patients and they were proving to me that I had made the right career choice. Would I Do it all Over Again? People often ask me if I would do it all over again? Was this a good career choice looking in the rear-view mirror. For me,

Sim. É assim a menopausa. Bom, então melhor a morte, né? Então eu resolvi falar sobre isso. Levantar essa bandeira. Acredito no ageless. Eu jamais votei no PT, jamais.

In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. Welcome to Thanksgiving at the Manor! Pull up a chair and get ready to dig into popcorn, toast, and jelly beans (which is something we'll talk about next year -- foreshadowing, dun dun dun!). I wonder what goes better with that repast, stout or mead? Guess we'll have to find out within the next 365 days. But we digress (sorry for the tangent). This year we're talking about the Arlo Guthrie song that's played every year on classic rock stations (and formerly on current rock stations when, you know, the songs were current), "Alice's Restaurant." We talk about the song, it's story, and a wee bit of context, so get ready to drink with us! Next week's episode is about a certain move that could be either for Halloween or for Christmas, so we're putting it out just after Thanksgiving. That's who we are... MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! In early October, French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled the details of an upcoming law aimed at fighting what he called “Islamist separatism.”In the aftermath of two recent, gruesome terrorist attacks in France, Macron said that Islam “is in crisis all over the world." Related: French teacher's murder widens France-Turkey rift over secularismA new draft of the law released to French media earlier this week notably took out the word “separatism.” It’s now called the “law consolidating republican principles.”But the idea remains the same. In essence, Macron wants the religion of Islam to fit with French republican values. Related: Does the spirit of 'Je Suis Charlie' endure in France today?“We need French intellectuals, French imams and French academics to interpret and to disseminate a modern interpretation of Islam,” said Hakim El Karoui, a Paris-based political consultant who has written extensively about the threat of Islamist extremism and the need to create a “French Islam.”Many of El Karoui’s ideas have been incorporated into the proposed law, which will be debated in the French Parliament in early December.Related: ‘Maybe we need more God in prisons' to curb radicalization, says one former extremistAmong other things, the law would monitor international funding coming into French mosques, crack down on online hate speech and create a special certificate program for French imams.Karoui believes the majority of French Muslims would support the law. In 2016, he conducted a survey of French Muslims and found that nearly half of them say they feel well adapted to French society. He calls them the silent majority. “[Many French Muslims] consider religion a private matter. Their silence is included in the French model. This is the challenging thing. We have to help them to speak."Hakim El Karoui, political consultant, Paris, France“They consider religion a private matter. Their silence is included in the French model. This is the challenging thing. We have to help them to speak,” Karoui said.Karoui encourages this “silent majority” to make it clear to the rest of France that those committing extremist acts in the name of Islam are an aberration.Reframing religion Journalist and filmmaker Rokhaya Diallo fears French President Emmanuel Macron's forthcoming "separatism law" will only create more division. Credit: Courtesy of Brigitte Sombie Rokhaya Diallo, a French journalist and filmmaker, disagrees with the notion that Islam itself needs reforming.“Religion belongs to people who have faith and we have laws ... it’s not up to politicians, to the government to intervene and try and reframe a religion,” Diallo said.At a time when France is under a national lockdown for COVID-19, and grappling with the grief from terrorist attacks, Diallo says Macron should be focused on bringing the country together — not singling out a religious minority, which she fears is only leading to more violence.“Certain people are trying to use the momentum to evict people ... minorities who are speaking out against racism, against Islamophobia, to disqualify them," Diallo said. She cites a recent protest organized by Génération Identitaire, a far-right organization described as a white nationalist group. After last month’s attack at a church in Nice, the group immediately took to the streets waving banners that said: “Islam Get of Europe.”‘What is separatism?’ At a market in the working-class Paris suburb of Bagneux, you’re just as likely to hear Arabic as French. Most of the people The World spoke with at the market identified as Muslim. The majority said they hadn’t heard much about this so-called separatism law.“What is separatism?” one man responded when asked his opinion about the law.A woman picking fruit nearby interjected. “It’s a new law,” she said. “But it’s not really clear. It's pretty confusing, actually.” The woman, who gave her name as Djamila, says she’s not sure if she’s for or against the law. But she really doesn't like the word “separatism.”“[The word 'separatism'] doesn't make sense here. French Muslims don’t want to be independent from the state. This word separatism gives the wrong impression.”Djamila, French shopper at a supermarket in Bagneux, France“This is what we say this for places that want to claim independence,” Djamila said. “It doesn't make sense here. French Muslims don’t want to be independent from the state. This word separatism gives the wrong impression.”While the latest version of the bill no longer uses the word separatism, it’s still swirling around in people’s minds. Abdel Hakim (left) and his friend Djilali, say the French government should be less preoccupied with the country's Muslim population and focus on responding to the coronavirus pandemic. Credit: Rebecca Rosman/The World In another corner of the market, two men drank tea and shared a snack. One of them was 30-year-old Abdel Hakim. He’s Algerian but has been living in France for more than half his life. “In France, a lot of people love to hear what they want to hear — not what the person in front of them is actually saying,” Hakim said. And Macron, he says, is no exception. “I think Muslims are this country’s biggest preoccupation. We know we've never been liked and we never will be. So, we just continue to live our daily lives and don't think about politics too much.”Regarding the proposed law, Hakim says he doesn’t think his opinion matters. Macron will do what he wants. The president, Hakim said, “will have no trouble finding an audience to tell him exactly what he wants to hear about Islam.”

2019 was a landmark year for investment into digital financial services, or Fintech, across Africa. Despite the pandemic, the Fintech scene is not only still thriving; it’s poised to play a key role in Africa’s economic recovery. Uzoma Dozie, the head of Nigerian startup Sparkle, says with Covid limiting our ability to handle cash, the cashless revolution in Africa is moving along rapidly. But Viola Llewellyn, president of Ovamba Solutions, which helps finance small businesses across Africa, says some sectors of African banking still lagged behind in digital services provision. Barbara Iyayi of Unicorn Growth Capital says Africa has a “perfect storm” of a young population, prevalent mobile services and a low rate of bank account holding, means Fintech will thrive across African economies but the infrastructure needs to be built up more. Photog Adventures Podcast: A Landscape Photography and Astrophotography Podcast
With three napkins filled with the scrawls of locations and weather predictions strewn around her, MaryBeth announced the next likely location for the workshop. Copper Harbor! A discussion and a decision later. We were heading West! MaryBeth had woken up early that morning to find us an opening in the skies so we had a better chance of seeing the Aurora should the conditions arise. The evidence of her hours of meticulously checking multiple weather models & predictions filled the napkins with data written in a legibility only MaryBeth was capable of reading. As she gathered her nearly falling apart napkins she laughed to herself and commented aloud, "See what I mean about rather being a crack addict than an aurora chaser?" Implying that it might be even less crazy to be on crack than participate in the chase she loves best. In this podcast, I share some of the what went wells and could have been betters about last week's Upper Peninsula Aurora Workshop. From weather and aurora chasing, to the sights and waterfalls of the Upper Peninsula and my first chance using a Tiffen Fog Filter to capture Orion in the darkest sky most of us had ever been under, this past week lived up to the Photog Adventures motto of getting out there on an adventure! This essay is part of "On China's New Silk Road," a podcast by the Global Reporting Centre that tracks China's global ambitions. Over nine episodes, Mary Kay Magistad, a former China correspondent for The World, partners with local journalists on five continents to uncover the effects of the most sweeping global infrastructure initiative in history. As winter arrives high up in the Himalayas, troops from Asia’s two giants remain in a tense standoff at their long-contested border, where India and China fought a war in 1962, and then faced off again just months ago. Now the two sides are in talks to deescalate the situation, with a plan on the table to pull back military forces. In hand-to-hand combat around May, Indian and Chinese troops beat each other with sticks and stones — before better-armed soldiers arrived in June. Despite the long-standing agreement not to use gunfire on the non-demarcated Line of Actual Control (LAC) border, at least 20 Indian troops and an undisclosed number of Chinese soldiers died in the clashes. The confrontation also signaled a sharp turn for the worse in India’s and China’s relationship, which had somewhat warmed over the past dozen years, with China becoming one of India’s top trading partners. Chinese companies have helped to build and supply subway lines in India’s cities, with hopes in some quarters that India will be able to further engage China’s experienced construction companies to overhaul aging Indian infrastructure."We can't build enough bridges or we can’t modernize our railways fast enough. So, all of those skills, actually the Chinese have."Santosh Pai, partner, Link Legal“We have an infrastructure deficit,” said Santosh Pai, a partner with Link Legal in New Delhi. Pai lived in China for years and now advises both Chinese companies who want to invest in India and Indian companies seeking to invest in China.“We can't get our roads built fast enough,” said Pai. “We can't build enough bridges or we can’t modernize our railways fast enough. So, all of those skills, actually the Chinese have.”Related: Opening the door to Chinese investment comes with risks for Southeast Asian nationsChina’s telecommunications companies were among those that installed 3G and 4G systems in India. And until the June border clash, Huawei was under consideration to install 5G. Their involvement may now be off the table, and India — not unlike the US — has also banned dozens of Chinese apps, including TikTok, citing security concerns.China’s critics in India consider the prospect of Beijing controlling Delhi’s 5G networks to be potentially most worrying. “The fear is that they have source code of these technologies and they can manipulate it to their advantage in a critical situation,” says VK Cherian, a telecommunications consultant in New Delhi. “Or they can literally shut off some networks — critical networks.”India’s leaders have also resisted China’s efforts to pull India into other sorts of networks that China leads or dominates. That goes for the new free-trade deal, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Agreement (RCEP), which was signed Nov. 15, and brings together most East Asian countries that represent almost a third of the global economy. And it goes for China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).‘Our sovereign territory’Even before border tensions ramped up, Indian strategists had become increasingly wary of China’s regional and global ambitions — with a Chinese presence now firmly entrenched in deep-water ports to India’s east in Myanmar, to its south in Sri Lanka, and to its west in Pakistan.India has opted not to join China’s BRI, which is a massive project to finance and build roads, railways, ports, pipelines, 5G and other infrastructure in dozens of countries around the world. The objective is to solidify a new network of global trade and power with China at its center. That’s one reason India hasn’t joined the BRI or RCEP. India also has a more immediate reason for keeping its distance from China’s Belt and Road endeavors. One of the BRI’s signature projects, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), runs through Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which India sees as its sovereign territory, unlawfully occupied by Pakistan soon after British colonialism ended in 1947. That was when the British separated the Indian subcontinent into two nations: India, a majority Hindu country, and Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim country. The area where Chinese and Indian troops are now at loggerheads is the Ladakh area in the greater Kashmir region. Chinese troops seized territory there in the 1962 war and in the more recent summer skirmish. And China claims more territory that India now controls. It passes through our sovereign territory,” says Dhruv Katoch, a retired major-general in the Indian army who spent much of his career defending Indian sovereignty in Kashmir. Katoch has also directed India’s Center for Land Warfare Studies, the Indian army’s premier think tank. He argues that India needs to be alert about China’s Belt and Road activities in Pakistan, including the construction of dams, a railway and a road that will run from China, through Kashmir, diagonally southwest across the country, to Pakistan’s strategically-located port of Gwadar. Gwadar is near the Iranian border and not far from the Strait of Hormuz, which leads to the Persian Gulf. Around one-quarter of the world’s oil passes through there, as do US naval ships, coming and going from their base in Bahrain. China’s BRI includes big expansion plans for the Gwadar port. The development encompasses industrial parks and new housing for Chinese workers. The vision is consistent with a Chinese strategy called “port-park-city,” which promotes urban growth starting with port facilities and then continuing with other infrastructure. The term also is associated with the idea that China can build for predominantly civilian use now but pivot toward potential military use later. ‘Very major security concern’Katoch is troubled by the road passing from China through contested Kashmir to Gwadar.“I think it is a very major security concern,” Katoch says. “To protect that road, a very large number of Pakistani military troops are employed. But what is not known is that a very large number of Chinese soldiers are also employed.”“These soldiers are not in uniform, but they are part of the security apparatus of the Chinese state,” he added. “And I think it gives China and Pakistan a nexus to join hands from this particular area should any hostilities take place between India and China.” A general view of signs along a highway leading to Gwadar, Pakistan, April 12, 2017. And so this fear — American audiences need to dispel — that there is going to be a Chinese outpost at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.” Gwadar has more challenges than most BRI ports. It’s in Balochistan, one of Pakistan’s poorest provinces. Over the years, it’s seen outsiders come in to mine copper and gold and drill for oil, leaving little benefit for ethnic Baloch people. Now, with China’s presence, the separatist Baloch Liberation Army has pushed back with repeated attacks on Chinese workers, on a luxury hotel in Gwadar, and on the Chinese consulate in Karachi. But still, Chinese construction continues. “I think China’s had its eyes on Gwadar Port for a very long time,” says Taha Siddiqui, a Pakistani journalist who long covered Balochistan. “And it’s going to get that no matter what, and keep that, no matter what.”
