On this episode of 83 Weeks, Eric Bischoff and Conrad Thompson dive into recent comments from Paul Heyman about the development and evolution of Roman Reigns' legendary "Tribal Chief" persona. That sparks a fascinating conversation about one of professional wrestling's oldest philosophies: living the gimmick. How important is it for a performer to truly become their character? Eric shares his perspective on authenticity, presentation, and why the most believable wrestling personalities often blur the line between the person and the performer. Then, the guys turn the clock back 30 years for This Week in nWo History! The New World Order is running wild, WCW is fighting for survival, and the road to WarGames is heating up! Eric and Conrad revisit the build toward the massive Team WCW vs. Team nWo showdown and discuss how the hottest storyline in wrestling continued to change the industry in 1996. Back in 1988, CBS gave us Garfield: His 9 Lives, an anthology special where our favorite lasagna enthusiast got to be a caveman, a pampered Egyptian god-cat, and an honest-to-goodness astronaut fending off an interstellar war fleet. Ambitious! Mythic, even! Then in 2006, Lucky Jump Games and The Game Factory looked at that legacy, borrowed the exact same title for a Game Boy Advance platformer, and said: actually, what if his nine lives were a farm, a haunted house, a circus, a sewer, a tree, an alley, an obedience school, and a lab? No pyramids. No space combat. Just Garfield, freshly stuffed from an eating binge, suffering eight increasingly damp nightmares about locations you could reach on foot from his own kitchen. Climbing out of Garfield's nightmare to help us survey the damage is Derek B Gayle, who hosts or co-hosts what feels like an ever-multiplying stable of shows including Walloping Websnappers, Gimmicks, Skreeonk!, and, at this point, so many other podcasts that keeping an accurate list may violate several laws of podcast physics. If Garfield hates Mondays, Derek looked at that same feeling and apparently decided the correct response was to start four more podcasts to fill the time. So raid the fridge, settle in for a night you won't remember fondly, and let's find out if Garfield and His Nine Lives earned its spot next to the caveman, the pharaoh, and the astronaut, or if it should've stayed exactly the kind of dream you forget the second your alarm goes off. Learn such things as: Are names of things even really that important? Why would you ever try to save your mortal enemy? Can you be surprised by anything, or anyone, that Garfield runs across? And so much more! You can find Derek @DerekBGayle on Bluesky, Instagram, and other social media platforms that may or may not exist when this was posted, hear him on other podcasts on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective such as Gimmicks, Walloping Websnappers, Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, Skreeonk!, and Falling with Style. EPISODE 153 - “JACK & MABEL ALBERTSON: IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY” - 8/17/2026 Hollywood history is filled with famous acting families, but few sibling stories are quite as surprising—or as entertaining—as that of JACK and MABEL ALBERTSON. In the latest episode of From Beneath the Hollywood Sign, we look back at the remarkable lives and careers of a brother and sister who took very different roads to show business success. Jack became one of Hollywood's most beloved character actors. He won an Oscar for The Subject Was Roses, inspiring generations of fans as Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and won legions of new fans on TV for Chico and the Man. Mabel carved out her own memorable career — appearing in movies such as Barefoot in the Park and What's Up Doc? before finding fame on television, most famously as Mother Stephens on Bewitched. From vaudeville stages and lean early years to Broadway, movies, television, and finally Hollywood success, theirs is a story of perseverance, talent, an unbreakable bond. Join us as we celebrate this revered brother/sister act, on a brand-new episode of From Beneath the Hollywood Sign.

Former State Senator Bill Eigel, candidate for St. Charles County Executive, joins Marc Cox to dismantle recent actions taken by the incumbent county leadership on the eve of Election Day. Eigel exposes a temporary, one-year county tax rollback that saves families a mere $9, contrasting it with his plan to permanently eliminate the personal property tax by cutting $120 million in bloated county spending—including wasteful subsidies for failing facilities and unneeded municipal renovations. Marc and Eigel also discuss the crucial local primary races in Districts 3 and 5, urging voters to bring true fiscal conservative accountability to St. Charles County. But, here’s a local story of interest: After seven years of planning, a new seniors lodge will be built in Vulcan to replace the Peter Dawson Lodge, which was built in 1963. According to spokesperson Kelly Nelson, while the Dawson Lodge is reportedly in “really good shape,” it no longer meets current building standards. “The rooms are too small, we have inside rooms without any windows to the outside,” said Nelson, adding seniors don't want to move in until they have a room with a window. The new facility, expected to open in 2028, will have 62 affordable-housing units. Vulcan Mayor Tom Grant said Thursday the new facility will be a “win-win” for the community. So much went on in this episode, I had to say a little prayer at the end. We did a blind from DOC and lets just say it turned the episode into a real thing. Hope you enjoy.Patreon.com/offtopicwhiskeyhttps://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3Blue corn has emerged as a major trend in craft distilling, celebrated for introducing complex, bold alternative flavor profiles to American whiskey.Unlike mass-produced yellow dent corn (Yellow No. 2), which is maximized for crop yield and ethanol efficiency, heirloom blue corn varieties have been selected for generations entirely for human consumption and superior taste.Flavor ProfileBlue corn shifts the sensory boundaries of traditional whiskey, typically exhibiting the following characteristics:Earthy and Savory: It is notably less sweet and significantly more rustic, introducing deep, minerals-and-soil qualities to the spirit.Nutty and Oily: Due to a rich concentration of natural oils in the grain, blue corn creates a highly viscous, velvet mouthfeel. It often tastes of roasted nuts, toasted sugar, popcorn, and cocoa.Dark Fruits: Many distillers and reviewers note distinct dark fruit or "purple" traits, including heavy undertones of blackberry, plum, and blueberry compote.Challenges in DistillingWhile it creates an exceptional spirit, blue corn is notoriously difficult to work with for two main reasons:Low Yield: The heirloom crop generates far less fermentable starch per acre than industrial corn, making it far more expensive to source. The "Masa" Effect: During the mashing process, the heavy proteins and starches in blue corn create a thick, sticky paste (similar to tamale or tortilla dough). This frequently clogs distillation equipment and pipes.Prominent Distilleries and BottlesSeveral innovative distilleries have built high-profile releases around this grain:Balcones Distillery: The Texas craft pioneer was among the first to popularize the grain with their iconic Balcones Baby Blue. It is crafted from 100% roasted blue flint corn, displaying a heavy, buttery profile.Still Austin: Known for its highly coveted, seasonal winter Bottled-in-Bond Blue Corn Bourbon, which balances a high-rye mash bill with deep blueberry and brown sugar notes.Bluegrass Distillers: Based in Kentucky, their Blue Corn Bottled-in-Bond features a 75% blue corn mash bill that yields an earthy, bakery-fresh croissant and spice flavor profile.Smokeye Hill & Jeptha Creed: Both distilleries have captured industry attention with high-proof, single-barrel, or specialty heirloom blue corn expressions that lean heavily into savory old-school profiles.Mashing and distilling blue corn requires significant deviation from standard yellow corn workflows due to the unique structural properties of the grain. The Mashing ProcessTraditional raw corn consists of tightly packed, small starch granules that require substantial heat energy to unravel. Blue corn, specifically heirloom varieties like Hopi or Mexican atole, possesses a dense protein matrix and higher natural oil content that drastically alters mashing dynamics.High-Temperature GelatinizationBefore enzymes can convert corn starches into fermentable sugars, the grain must be gelatinized. The Workflow: Milled blue corn is mixed with water and heated to roughly 190°F to 200°F (88°C to 93°C). It must be held at this near-boiling temperature for 30 to 60 minutes to completely fracture the starch structures. The "Masa" Problem: As blue corn hits its gelatinization threshold, it binds water intensely. It transforms almost instantly into a thick, purple concrete-like paste. If left unchecked, this paste will burn onto the bottom of the mash cooker or seize up mechanical stirring paddles.

Everyone's talking about the free $1,000 the government just dropped into Trump Accounts. Almost nobody's talking about the fine print — or the backdoor Roth IRA strategy hiding inside it. In this episode, David breaks down Trump Accounts, 529 plans, UGMA/UTMA custodial accounts, and custodial Roth IRAs side by side: what each one actually does, where the real catches are, and the one advanced move that could turn a modest Trump Account into a six-figure Roth IRA by your kid's mid-20s.The Numbers You Need to Know$1,000 — one-time federal seed deposit for eligible kids born 2025–2028$5,000/year — combined annual contribution cap for a Trump Account (individuals + employer)$2,500/year — max employer contribution, counted within the $5,000 cap0.10% — expense ratio cap on Trump Account investmentsAge 18 — when a Trump Account unlocks and converts to a traditional IRA$7,500 — 2026 contribution limit for a custodial Roth IRA (requires earned income)10% — early withdrawal penalty on taxable IRA distributions before age 59½Episode Timestamps0:00 — Cold open: the free money everyone's talking about2:30 — What a Trump Account actually is8:00 — The 529 comparison12:30 — UGMA/UTMA: the no-restrictions account (and its biggest risk)17:00 — Custodial Roth IRA for kids with earned income23:00 — The backdoor Roth conversion strategy hiding inside a Trump Account27:30 — So which account do you actually use?31:00 — Wrap-up and next stepsWhat Is a Trump Account?A Trump Account (formally a Section 530A account) is a new type of custodial-style traditional IRA for children, available starting July 4, 2026. Any U.S. citizen child under 18 with a valid Social Security number can have one opened on their behalf — and children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 qualify for a one-time $1,000 federal seed deposit. After that seed money, parents, grandparents, and other individuals can contribute up to $5,000 combined per year, with no earned-income requirement. Employers can add up to $2,500 of that total, tax-free to the employee. During the account's "growth period" — birth until January 1 of the year the child turns 18 — the money is locked, invested only in low-cost U.S. stock index funds, and cannot be withdrawn for any reason."The Trump Account is not a replacement for a 529. It's not a replacement for a custodial account. And for some of you, it might not even be the best of the four options we're about to walk through."Trump Account Quick FactsNo earned income required to contribute$1,000 government seed for eligible children (does not count toward the $5,000 annual cap)Locked until January 1 of the year the child turns 18Converts to a standard traditional IRA at that point — ordinary income tax + 10% penalty on early withdrawals apply thereafter, with limited exceptionsTrump Account vs. 529 PlanA 529 plan is purpose-built for education. Many states offer a tax deduction for contributions, and—unlike a Trump Account—qualified education withdrawals come out completely tax-free, not just tax-deferred. Contribution ceilings are also far higher than the Trump Account's $5,000 annual cap.The tradeoff: flexibility. If the money isn't used for qualified education expenses, you're facing taxes and penalties to access it for anything else. (Some limited 529-to-Roth rollover options now exist, but they come with their own caps and rules.)Bottom line: Trump Account = flexible use, locked for 18 years. 529 = bigger tax break, locked into education as the purpose.Trump Account vs. UGMA/UTMAUGMA and UTMA custodial accounts offer something neither of the accounts above can: zero restrictions on how the money gets used. Braces, a car, a business — anything. But that flexibility comes with two real costs. First, it's a fully taxable account — no tax-deferred growth, and the "kiddie tax" may apply, sometimes taxing gains at the parents' rate rather than the child's. Second, and more importantly: the money legally belongs to the child from day one. At 18 or 21 (state-dependent), every dollar becomes theirs, with no conditions and no say from the adults who funded it."I've had conversations with clients who funded one of these accounts for a decade and then watched their 18-year-old empty it out for something the parents very much did not sign up for."Trump Account vs. Custodial Roth IRAFor a child with real, documentable earned income — a W-2 job, self-employment, or legitimate pay through a family business — a custodial Roth IRA quietly beats all three other accounts on pure math. Contributions grow completely tax-free, not just tax-deferred, and the contribution ceiling ($7,500 in 2026) is higher than the Trump Account's $5,000 cap.The catch: it only works if the earned-income requirement is met, and the documentation needs to be handled correctly — especially if the income comes through a family business — or it can create a bigger problem with the IRS than it solves. The Backdoor Roth Strategy Hiding Inside a Trump AccountHere's the piece almost nobody talks about: once a Trump Account converts to a traditional IRA at 18, it becomes eligible for a standard Roth IRA conversion — meaning some or all of that balance can be moved into a Roth IRA by paying ordinary income tax on the converted amount today, in exchange for tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawals for life.Because Trump Accounts never required earned income to fund in the first place, this creates something that wasn't possible before: a path to real Roth IRA money for a child who never worked a single job."You could have a kid who never worked a single job, walk into age 18 with real money in that account, and convert it into a Roth IRA — something that was never possible before without earned income. That's the backdoor."The timing matters enormously. Converting during a low-income year — often the late teens through mid-20s — means paying tax on the conversion at a much lower bracket than the money would likely be taxed at later in life. Some financial planners have modeled modest Trump Account balances compounding into six figures in a Roth IRA by a young adult's mid-20s, and well over $1 million by retirement.Landmines to Know Before ConvertingKiddie tax risk: converting while the child is still a full-time student or dependent can trigger taxation at the parents' rate, undercutting the strategyBasis tracking: government seed money, employer contributions, and charitable deposits are fully pre-tax and taxable on conversion; money contributed by parents or grandparents was already after-tax and shouldn't be taxed againThe five-year rule: each conversion starts its own five-year clock before it can be withdrawn tax- and penalty-freeEvolving guidance: the IRS has not finished writing all the rules around this strategySo Which Account Should You Actually Use?The honest answer: it's not "pick one." These accounts serve different goals, and stacking them intentionally — rather than by accident — is where real planning happens.529: earmarked money for a specific outcome — educationUGMA/UTMA: flexible, no-restriction savings, with real loss-of-control riskTrump Account: long-horizon retirement head start, with free seed money and a potential backdoor Roth playCustodial Roth IRA: the strongest long-term math, once a child has earned incomeNone of these are wrong on their own. But four accounts with four different rule books, contribution sources, tax treatments, and control timelines is exactly how families end up with a pile of savings and no actual strategy behind it.Ready to Map It Out?If you've got a Trump Account, a 529, an old UTMA, and a kid with a summer job all in the mix — and you're not sure they're actually working together — that's exactly what a Vision Call is for. We'll map out every account you've got for your kids or grandkids and make sure they're pulling in the same direction, including whether a Roth conversion strategy makes sense for your family.Schedule your free Vision Call →Know a parent or grandparent who just opened a Trump Account without thinking through the other three options? Send them this episode — it might save them from a decision that's hard to undo.Topics covered: Trump Accounts, Section 530A accounts, 529 plans, UGMA accounts, UTMA accounts, custodial Roth IRA, Roth IRA conversion, kiddie tax, IRA contribution limits, saving for kids, tax-free growth, financial planning for children, retirement accounts for minors, backdoor Roth strategy

Garfield has spent I don't want to think about how long being terrified for our entertainment, and somehow this is only the second time we've noticed. Today we're looking at two occasions Jim Davis's laziest creation got shoved into a horror plot he absolutely did not sign up for: Garfield's Nightmare on the Nintendo DS and Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt, the Flash game that lived on Garfield.com back when “Flash game that lived on a dot-com” was still a sentence people said out loud. Helping us make sense of not one but two instances of “cat, but afraid” is Dee Parson from Supr Dee, the syndicated cartoonist behind Rosebuds. A guy who, by his own account, actually learned to read on Garfield comics, which means this episode is less “guest booking” and more “the student returns to grade the source material's video game output.” So lock the pantry, keep an eye on the Scare-O-Meter, and let's find out if either of these games earned the right to scare a cat who once ate an entire sandwich made of other sandwiches. Learn such things as: What horrible real world things can Garfield save us from? Is there anything scarier than having to face your own existence and mortality? Can lasagna solve all of the world's problems? And so much more! You can find the guest on Instagram @Suprdee2 and his website Supr Dee. Read transcriptSuperman Returns came out in 2006 and asked audiences a very sincere question: what if Superman, but sad? Brandon Routh brooded his way across the big screen, lifting improbable objects and pining for Lois Lane, and somewhere in a boardroom, someone decided this emotionally complex theatrical event needed to be a video game on four different platforms. Five if you count the Game Boy Advance version, which is technically a different game but we're counting it anyway because we paid good money decided that we just needed to talk about it. The PS2 and Xbox versions let you fly around Metropolis, absorbing explosions with your face in service of a health bar that belonged to the city rather than Superman himself, which is either a genuinely clever design idea or the most passive-aggressive mechanic in superhero gaming history. The Xbox 360 version turned the whole thing into an open-world showcase for what next-gen hardware could do, which in 2006 meant “look at those buildings.” The DS version was a side-scrolling beat-em-up. The GBA version was something else entirely. Superman Returns contained multitudes, is what we're saying. Joining me to dig through the whole sprawling, melancholy, city-defending mess is Adam Williamson, real-life friend, frequent Play Comics guest, and owner of a podcast idea that has been marinating for what I can only describe as a concerning length of time. Adam, I say this with love: at some point you're going to have to actually make the thing. In the meantime, he's here, the knowledge is flowing, and we've got a Superman game across half a console generation to get through. So settle in, try not to let the city's health bar drop to zero, and let's find out whether Superman Returns deserved better — from Hollywood, from the games industry, and honestly, maybe from all of us. Learn such things as: Did we finally crack the secret on how to make a good Superman game buried somewhere deep inside this one? Are real estate moguls the true evil in today's society? Are you a deadbeat dad if nobody besides you knows that you're the father? And so much more! You can find Adam on BlueSky @effectnotaffect and absolutely nowhere else except for on Play Comics where he writes comic reviews and appears on other episodes. Of particular interest to listeners of this episode are The Gimmick #1 and The Job #1. This week's blogpost - https://bahnsen.co/4eu3cR3 Brett Bonecutter hosts “Thoughts on Money” with author Blaine Carver to discuss “Trump accounts,” launching July 4, and whether they're a game changer or gimmick. Carver compares them to his grandmother's $1,000 investing gift and argues the accounts' biggest impact is behavioral—getting more Americans, especially those without assets in a “K-shaped economy,” invested in markets and compounding. Any U.S. child under 18 with a Social Security number can have an account; children born 2025–2028 receive a $1,000 Treasury seed deposit, and contributions up to $5,000/year are allowed but not deductible. Funds are largely locked until 18, invested in U.S. stock index funds, then treated like a traditional IRA with taxes/penalties on early withdrawals, making them poor for college or down payments. Carver highlights a potentially powerful Roth conversion strategy in early adulthood and contrasts use cases with 529s, UTMAs/UGMAs, trusts, and child Roth IRAs. 00:00 Trump Accounts Intro 01:47 Blaine Investing Origin Story 03:45 Early Money Mindset 06:22 Behavioral Game Changer 07:50 K Shaped Economy Context 12:35 Compounding From Birth 14:36 Eligibility And Seed Money 17:50 Rules And Restrictions 20:26 Tax Tradeoffs Explained 22:17 Who Owns The Account 23:08 Retirement Focus Tension 24:40 Early Withdrawal Temptation 25:32 Stronger Penalties Debate 27:11 Basis and Tax Complexity 32:27 Take the Free Seed Money 34:19 Roth Conversion Strategy 41:45 Choosing the Right Account 46:12 Dave Ramsey and Behavior 48:40 Closing and Next Episode Links mentioned in this episode: http://thoughtsonmoney.com http://thebahnsengroup.com

Read transcriptSomewhere out there is a piece of Superman history that almost nobody remembers exists. Not because it was bad. Not because it flopped. It just… vanished off the internet one day, like it got caught in a Phantom Zone projector aimed at a server farm. That's the story of The Multipath Adventures of Superman, and we're about to dig it back up. The whole thing started life as a CD project dreamed up with actual comic book writers, including Louise Simonson and Steve Englehart, before publisher Brilliant Digital Entertainment decided the format worked better as an ongoing online series. So you got Menace of Metallo on disc, and then a sprawling, branching, multi-arc saga that lived entirely on the internet, complete with a villain who time-travels just to make everyone's life harder. And then, because this is the late '90s internet we're talking about, the entire thing quietly vanished. No re-releases, no remasters, just a bunch of dead links and a handful of people insisting this was real and they didn't dream it. So yes, this episode is a little bit of a cheat. We usually stick to games you could buy off a shelf and put in a console. This is software, distributed on a CD-ROM and later piecemeal over a dial-up connection, that you had to install a special plugin just to run. But it's a piece of Superman history that's basically slipped through the cracks of the internet entirely, and that felt worth breaking the rules for. Helping me dig through the wreckage is Chris Baker from SuperHero.vg, who has spent decades working on actual superhero games at places like Marvel and LucasArts and literally wrote the book on this stuff with WRONG! Retro Games, You Messed Up Our Comic Book Heroes! If anyone can tell us whether this lost relic deserves to stay lost, it's him. So load up the B3D Projector, brace for some early-internet voice acting, and let's see how many ways Metropolis can end before lunch. Learn such things as: What happens when a piece of officially licensed Superman media just disappears off the internet? Is watching a Choose Your Own Adventure even a game? Is anyone at DC kicking themselves now since there's probably dozens of people who want to see this? And so much more! You can find Chris over at SuperHero.vg or @cbake76 on BlueSky or Threads. Or both. And if you listened all the way to the end and want to read the review that Chris shared with me, here's the link he mentioned.
