The Why and How of Making Fine Art Prints with Joshua Holko

To me, a quality print is the ultimate manifestation of a fine photograph and I just love this conversation with a fellow printing enthusiast. You’re a Moab Master. Tell me about that. You say that you prefer Somerset Museum Rag paper by Moab. That you “would not exhibit your work on any other paper.” why is that? What is it about this paper that makes it so special?  Your print process, I do three levels of inspection/sharpening. Capture sharpening, creative edits which include creative sharpening sharpening and output sharpening. Does this resonate with your process? Do you do things differently? 5b. Color calibration. Looks like you use Epson printers. We’ll talk about that briefly. Anything else you’d like to add. Announcements (appears before the printing conversation in the episode) I certainly hope all is well with you, things have really been humming along here at the farm. We had some excellent snow a couple weeks ago and now it seems Spring is well on its way. Things happening in the fb group recently: Closed the Winter Wonderland submission timeframe and opened another, Under the Sun. Be sure to apply the topic to your original post so I can see it when it’s time to do the review. We’ll actually plan to do this next one live and that will be scheduled a bit later. We’ll shoot for later in March.  For Under the Sun, try and incorporate something with the sun in your shot. Feel free to dig through your archive of images, or make a new image. It doesn’t matter to me. I’ll try once again to bring someone on with me to do the review and this will generally be a rather light hearted review. We won’t dive too deeply nor will we get to critical. But it’s still a great opportunity to learn some points on the insights we share about the photos. The session I recorded with Tom Wagner is posted to YouTube but I had a weird echo with Tom’s audio. That was not his fault at all. I heard him just fine and I know his side of things was operating as it should. The echo was my issue and I’m getting that figured out before I do the next session. I may delete that video because, while it’s great to have those photos discussed, I just can’t see it really working well since it’s so hard to sit through. So, my apologies to you and Tom and we’ll get it fixed the next time around. Other things in the group, Mike Regas asked about online learning, he mentioned Phlearn Pro and Kelby One. If you have anything to chime in on that I’m sure he’d love to hear from you :)  And Aaron Martinez, he was on just a few episodes ago talking about the Pentax K3 mkii, which has been delayed indefinitely, well, he posted a pic from up here in the PNW. Nice to see these types of images coming in :) My next episode will be all about your Lightroom Classic questions. I have very little experience in Lightroom CC but if those are there I’ll do my best with those. Look for the post in the group and get your questions listed there. I pinned it to the top and I made it an announcement so it should be easy to find. Rather off topic, but something I wanted to share anyway, I was able to help a fellow faculty member with a website recently. He produced a six episode documentary on the Biblical book of Mark. The website link is in the shownotes towards the top but it’s called Reliving Mark. The first episode is to be released today, the 28th of February. You can watch it online if you’d like and the remaining five episodes will be released a week apart. I believe it culminates with the final episode releasing on Easter Sunday which is kinda cool. Oh, I finally got my submission in to the Voices of the Wildernes Artist in Residence program operated by the National Forest Service in Alaska. If you want, you can see my submission portfolio of six images in the fb group. I decided to focus on three genres of work, the Active Landscape, Panoramas and my series I call Segmentation. I should know the results by mid April so I’ll keep my fingers crossed and pray they choose me. It would be such an amazing experience to head up there and be in the wilderness for a couple of weeks. And my goodness, I’ve just got so many things to talk about. I have a preliminary plan worked out for my Sabbatical experience I hope I’ll get approval for from my Vice President at the university. It includes Great Basin National Park, Badlands National Park, Lake Superior coast of Minnesota and Isle Royale National Park and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. My intent was to visit various national parks that are not exceedingly popular. And all of these fit that description as I look at the visitation numbers for 2019. Once I have confirmation that it’s been approved I’ll start making reservations and other final plans. I was thinking about seeing if I could go far and wide, like to Florida or Maine, but let’s face it. We have a gigantic country and I have a family too. This trip would have me on the road for 4.5 weeks and most of it would be camping. So I remain hopeful… One other idea I had was to lengthen the trip and fly home for a week in the middle of the trip to break it up a bit. We’ll see how it goes but I don’t see that happening at this point. My plan largely centers around spending the better part of a week in each location, then completely resting on Saturday’s in a hotel, literally just chilling out and possibly sleeping. And then on Sundays I’ll record a podcast episode and publish it so you always will have fresh and timely discussion about the experience and then I’ll be back on the road on Mondays to the next destination. It won’t be a perfect occurrence every time because I’m looking at spending the weekend on Isle Royale, but for the most part that will be my goal. OK, I think I’ve about covered it all, it’s time to get on to my discussion with Joshua Holko, he’s been on the show twice before talking about his work as a Polar Photographer and prepping for harsh winter conditions. So without further ado let’s just get right to it and I’ll start by saying Joshua, welcome to the show! Ending Remarks Latitude Photo School is going pretty good. Today starts a huge push to make it all come together. In this episode I mention about my printing course. That will be part of the school for sure, but just know that I’ve temporarily turned off the ability to purchase that course since I’m switching up a bunch of the tech I’m using to deliver my online trainings. But in short, my LPS service will include the following: Access to all my courses, group Q&A sessions (you can type in questions, I’ll answer them or show you on screen, whatever is the best option) assignments with feedback and a I’ll be planning on rolling out a discussion forum shortly after launch. If you have any ideas about what you’d like to see that would put my photo training service above the rest I’m all ears. I really like the idea of assignments because I really do believe that photography is best learned by doing the work and then getting a review on those images makes it all the better. I have yet to fully flesh out how it’ll work because I could easily get overwhelmed but I really want to make this the best service with the greatest value possible.  Reminders Find us on the web at http://latitudephotographypodcast.com Find me on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/brentberghermphoto/ Find the podcast facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/latitudephotographypodcast/ Find me on instagram @brentbergherm Find me on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/c/brentberghermphotography Find me online at https://brentbergherm.com Find Joshua online at: https://jholko.com

BPP 128: What to Work on this Winter to be a Better Photographer by Spring

The Beginner Photography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 24, 2018 33:26

The overarching theme this month is obviously winter. The extra time we have from not shooting out in 4 feet of snow. Now maybe you are out shooting in 4ft of snow. That’s awesome and you’re stronger than me for sure. But if you’re not shooting in 4ft of snow (like me) I don’t want you to get lazy or think that you cant do anything photography related for a whole season. If you have been listening for the past 2 weeks you will know that winter is an opportunity. And I want to help you take advantage of it! So I made a little list of things you should take care of this winter to better set yourself up for success this in 2019. 1: Your Social Media I know, I can hear the collective groans from you all. But it's not as in YOU HAVE TO DO IT to be a photographer. if photography is just a hobby and you don’t share your photos you don’t have to have a FB or instagram but there are a lot of photographers out there listening right now who use both, and they do it poorly. This tip is for them. I remember when I first made my FB and insta I didn’t post a lot. I thought I could I only post new content. I could never post the same photo twice. That’s just not the case. There are no instagram cops who will close your account if you post the same photo twice. Dont do it in a row of course but if you post the same photo once a month, no one will care as they will have forgot about it from the last time you posted it. Most photographers also forget that Social media is suppose to be social. It’s not an online classified ad. Too many photographers go on and just post sales and promotions. No one wants to ONLY be sold to. Make social media social. Tell the story of how you took a photo. Why you love shooting what you do. Ask questions. Have polls. A or B? That sort of stuff. Entertain your audience. Your photos don’t speak a thousand words and they don’t need to. People are so use to aimless scrolling, give them a reason to stop. Give them a reason to interact with your posts. the life of a photo is like 6 mins on instagram. You should be posting your work a minimum of once a day. “But I don’t have time for that!” I get it social is addicting and time consuming. I cant tell you how many times Ive needed to get on FB or Instagram to check something specific like an ad and then 20 mins later forgot why I was on there. That’s why I schedule out all of my social media. So that I don’t fall behind getting lost watching everyones stories and what not. And I can also strategically curate my brand through my captions. I use a program called Planoy which lets me schedule out my instagram posts for a whole month for free. It’s integral to sharing my message without getting too distracted and start scrolling.   And if you have a Facebook business page you have the ability schedule your posts built it! 2: Organization Next thing to work on is Organization. This can be so much more than just the photos on your computer which are everywhere and in random folders names "Untitled Folder 7" But lets talk about photos first. Use a dedicated hard drive just for work files. A 1tb hard drive can be purchased for $50. Having a fresh slate makes it easier to organize. I Have a folder called RHP for my business, then inside is folders for business or photo, in photos is engagements, weddings, portraits, and personal. Then in each of those folders its broken down by year, then in each year is a list of the clients I photographed, then inside that are folders for Raw, Selected (The photos I want to edit), and Edited the completed photos. So if Im looking for a specific engagement photo I could go RHP/Photos/Engagement/2014/Chris and Sally/Edited/ Chris and Sally Engagements 125.jpg Next place to get organized is your client management if you shoot portraits. Things like keeping track of where they are in the booking process, how they heard about you, when you want to follow up. There are tons of tools out there for track the client process. I use 17 hats which Im happy with especially for the price compared to other CRMs but in all honesty, you could track a clients process for free using a tool like Trello. Trello is an application you can use on your phone or computer that lets you create Boards, in our case "Portrait clients" and then in that board you have cards. In our case each client would have their own card. In their card you can make a checklist.Respond to email with price-list, set up a meeting, send invoice, sign contract, send welcome gift, email style guide, email day before session check in info, shoot session, back up session on 3 hard drives, import into lightroom, cull photos, edit photos, export photos, upload gallery, send client their gallery, send email for a review, send follow up questionnaire, send thank you card 1 month later, send happy anniversary card 1 year later. At any point you can see where you are in the client process. You can even assign due dates so you dont forget! again that tool is called Trello. I use and love it. It’s free, check it out. 3: Service Your Gear Next thing to take care of is service your gear. You take your car in for a tuneup, you need to take your camera gear in for a tune up too. Since you wont be shooting as much here in the winter its a perfect time to send in your gear to get serviced. Canon, nikon, fuji, and sony all have programs to do just that. You just google "Canon camera service and repair" and youll find it! Its like $100 or so and your camera will come back as good as new. Honestly. It’s amazing. 4: EDUCATE YOURSELF! Lastly is you need a plan to Educate yourself! One of my favorite ways to do that is meet with other local photographers. Thats something I going to be doing this winter for sure. Getting together with other photographers lets you meet and network with other creatives who live close to you but also lets you learn new things! I can't tell you how many smalllll tips I have learned from other photographers that I never would have found online, or even knew what to look for. It does not have to be a big deal. if there is a photographer who work you like local to you, just ask to take them out for a coffee. No pressure, you just thought it would be fun to chat with another photographer in these slow months. They might say no, don't take it personally for some its just a bad time. Plus you can always join the online community of the BPP You got into photography because you want to take beautiful photos and that will be a lifelong journey. You don't just get to a point where you take beautiful photos and you stop, you keep going. Some of the worlds best photographers still attend regular photography workshops that cost thousands of dollars. Luckily because of the internet there is a ton of great info online that you can benefit from. I made a list of the 23 photography YouTube channels you should be following which you can find in the show notes for todays episode or if you google it, and that's a great start. If you want to learn more in-depth on a single topic though, I personally love to use creative live. If you don’t know, creative live is like a live online workshop. They have quite a bit on offer for photographers. Some of their most popular courses are "The Fundamentals of photography" Conquering crappy light "Lightroom CC the complete guide" and pricing and sales for photographers. Full disclosure, I am an affiliate for creative live meaning if you make a purchase through one of my links I will receive a commission. But I believe in them 100% and I hope you know I would never recommend to you something I don't believe in. Their courses are also taught by experts like Sue Bryce, Lindsay Adler, and even our own past guest Vanessa Joy! And the best part is, ITS free to watch it live! They play a course a day online which you can watch for free! And of course they have a whole back catalog of courses which you can purchase as well. For 2019 I'm making it a goal to continue my education by purchasing 1 course a month and diving in deep to really grow my skills as a photographer and more efficiently run a business. Last year I bought a course called the personal MBA, and even though it’s a video course, I could listen to it while driving. I would highly recommend you sign up for creative live. It’s free to be a member and they send promo codes to your email all the time making their paid courses even cheaper. Sign Up For A Free Creative Live Membership Now! There are hundreds if not thousands of course on creative live which can be daunting to pick one to get started for sure. So if you have any questions or want a recommendation let me know! Just ask. Shoot me an email at BeginnerPhotographyPodcast@gmail.com Tell me what you shoot or what you want to learn and I will hand pick a recommendation for you! I know with these tips you can make the most out of the winter season and come out in spring a better photographer for it! So email me now for a Creative live recommendation at BeginnerPhotographyPodcast@gmail.com and you can become a better photographer today! Until next week stay safe and I love you all!

“HDR” used to bring to mind surreal landscapes with garish colors and very few shadows. Fortunately, high-dynamic range photography has matured beyond those early days, and is a useful technique for getting more detail out of any scene. The latest iPhone and other smartphone cameras use HDR liberally to create good shots in all types of situations. We talk about making HDR photos using traditional cameras and techniques and also the new iPhone's computational methods. 170.

There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer either way and, in the end, it really depends on what you want to get out of your work. Eugene Richards is our Photographer of the Week.

So here's the deal…you have a podcast and now you need listeners. By now you’ve discovered that it takes more than putting your show up on iTunes and expecting subscribers to just come out of the woodwork and become raving fans. One of the easiest ways to get those listeners is to have Apple, Google, Overcast, Stitcher, and other giant media platforms send you listeners for free…listeners who want EXACTLY what you have to offer on your show. This week my guest Daniel J. Lewis is going to show you exactly how to do that very thing. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations Peace Is a Weapon “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Fear is the enemy of faith. Fear is slavery, the Un-Maker, the Adversary, and the Resistance. Fear wants us to live in bondage to the past (guilt and shame) and even the future (depression and anxiety) – but God wants us to live in the freedom of His love and power in the present. Paul wrote, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.'” (Romans 8:15) To be the person God calls us to be, we must conquer fear. But what weapon can empower us to do that? This is a spiritual battle, and it can only be won with spiritual weapons. Peace is the weapon that defeats fear. Jesus told His followers, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) The apostle Paul told the persecuted Christians in Rome, “The God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.” (Romans 16:20) The peace of God is our weapon against fear and Satan. Before going to the cross, Jesus told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27). Fear is a natural response to adversity. Peace is the supernatural response that God gives us by His grace. Just as Jesus has authority over the wind and waves, He has authority over the storms in our lives. He has authority over our doubts, fears, and shame. “…as He is, so are we in this world.” (1 John 4:17) And Jesus is now “seated … in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.” (Ephesians 1:20-23) Doubts, depression, anxiety, fear, and shame are the weapons of the Great Enemy. Take hold of the peace God has already provided for you today. Tip of the Week I've been doing a lot of photography and post-photographic processing of late. And I just rediscovered something that's been around for a while…Adobe Lightroom for mobile. It allows you to access, edit, organize, and share photos on your iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Changes sync seamlessly, so updates are available from the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC desktop app, or from your Lightroom account on the web. Note: Syncing to Lightroom CC on the desktop and the web requires a Lightroom CC trial or a paid Adobe Creative Cloud membership. 80.

John and Kathy have been living full-time in their RV since early 2005 and chronicle their adventures and their tips on the livingthervdream.com website and podcast. In this conversation we learn: How to cure "grandparent-itus" The secret to getting RV repair when the big service shops are all booked up Why buying used makes the most sense for many What it's really like being a full-time RVer and why it's not for everyone The best way to stay connected to the Internet while traveling How to decide between a motorhome or a fifth wheel or travel trailer Besides the interview with the Huggins, we answer listener questions about: Gas prices - they're on the rise again but how high will they be during the travel season? Finding campsites that are wheelchair accessible How to learn to make better photographs (or any other skill) through online training that you can take anywhere Plus we have tech tips, a bucket list destination of the week and a great off the beaten path yarn. [spp-player] First Things First: Snowbirds and Gas Prices We kick off the show with an interesting call from a listener named Freddie who has some thoughts about snowbirds "taking advantage" of the beautiful south during this time of year. He also makes a prediction about a rise in gas prices and I bring you up to speed on what's happening with it today. Question: Campsites for People with Disabilities? Listeners Craig and Julie call in with a question about finding more campsites for people with disabilities, also known as adaptive campsites. I explain what these kind of sites encompass, what some of the laws are, and talk about a link to find adaptive sites, which you can find by clicking here. Question: Where Can I Take Online Photography Classes? A listener asks for information about how to find online courses for learning how to use photography software such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom CC, which are both on my recently updated list of tech gear. I talk about how I benefited from taking online courses as well as a special deal available only to Roadtreking listeners at roadtreking.com/lynda, where you can even try it free for 10 days and see if online learning works as well for you as it has for me. By the way, they have more than 3,300 courses to pick from - including more than 100,000 video tutorials - in subjects ranging from photography, video and audio to graphic design and web development.
