Joe Lapan is the co-founder of the legendary Songbyrd Music House in Washington D.C. Joe's venue is considered a "small venue" which for most artists is going to be their first time visiting and performing in that city. This means Joe must manage to curate and find relatively unknown talent BEFORE everyone else is excited about them, while still selling tickets, Food, and beverages. Now add on what's happened over the past few years in the world, and you are looking at one of the most challenging businesses in the world...somehow, Joe has figured out how not just to survive, but thrive and even expand his business. Joe also gives great advice for artists who are looking to book their first shows. Rachel Levitin carves out time amidst the release of her latest single, "Off My Mind", to join the Alchemicast with Andy Reed. Rachel describes how she began pursuing her calling in music in earnest around 2012 around her college graduation and about finding community within the Washington DC metropolitan music scene. She loves attending, working, or performing concerts - finding any way she can to be around music; even hosting open-mics at various DMV venues, including Union Stage, Jammin' Java, and Songbyrd Music House, and as a voice for 501c(3) nonprofit ProjectHERA. Rachel talks about the songwriting process and collaborating with Tony Lucca for "HEAVY" which was released in February of 2021. Rachel is extremely loyal, which we attribute to her being a long-time Chicago Cubs fan, though she points out The Mighty Ducks as an influence and inspiration. When a cryptic op-ed appeared in The New York Times, it set off a frenzy in US politics. The writer, an anonymous senior official in the White House, criticized the President for whom they served as amoral. With his interest piqued, co-host Dan Bloom decided to do a little online sleuthing. Although the writer's identity remains unknown, there was one key clue that led to Dan's guess. Vice President Mike Pence happens to use an unusual word conspicuously often that also appears in the op-ed: "LODESTAR," defined as “a star that is used to guide the course of a ship.” Just two days later, while basking in the viral notoriety of his hypothesis, Dan was surprised to find his own vocational lodestar suddenly go dark when he was laid off. Luckily, a new, and exciting project quickly materialized, which in turn led to an invitation to the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism conference (ARIJ18) in Jordan. When David Ross left a steady office job to find his own lodestar in more creative work, he could never have anticipated the emotional peaks and valleys he would come to traverse. Along this path, David developed resilience, resolve, and tangible skills like the art of booking talent. David is now using this unique skill set to manage musicians and other acts with his company “Forest and Farms.” DJ/Producer wunderkind Dreamcast (http://soundcloud.com/burymeinamink), indie rock band Ladygod (http://soundcloud.com/ladygodftw), and NBA legend Rod Strickland all make appearances in David’s story, which illuminates the invaluable lessons of “consistent persistence,” self-discovery, and transformative reinvention. One of David’s aforementioned acts, Ladygod, is playing a show at Washington DC’s Songbyrd Music House on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019. Priscilla Renea is one of music’s freshest voices and most talented songwriters — a musical powerhouse exploding on the scene who has the ability to capture your attention through her vocals, her lyrics, her looks, AND her uncanny wisdom on how to navigate life, pivot around the barriers, meet fear with fierce truth and a heart of love, and rise above it all. You likely know Priscilla’s work without knowing her name, as she has penned #1 smash hits for nearly every popular vocal artist in the industry. And now it is time for her to make her own mark with the debut later this summer of her new album, “Coloured.” Just this week, Parade Magazine, in a profile about this album, notes that Priscilla Renea “triumphs on Coloured with lush vocals, infectious grooves and a way with words that is unparalleled. The maturity of her artistic vision is like a breath of fresh air.” Parade Magazine sums up the experience of Renea’s new album by noting that, “spanning classic R&B, dark-edged country and urban-soul, Coloured is a fierce, political, and personal collection of stories that reckon with…love, heartbreak, and racial trauma.” If you live in the Washington, DC area, I hope you will join me at Priscilla Renea’s upcoming show at the City’s Songbyrd Music House on Sunday, May 20th. Yes, I want you to buy and listen to her music; but I also want you to get to know her story; her heart; and her stance for fairness in the world. Join us for a #SoulForcePolitics conversation with one of music’s most interesting new personalities, or as others in the media have noted: Priscilla Renea, “The Brain Behind Your Favorite Bangers.” Read Parade Magazine’s Review of Priscilla Renea’s upcoming new album, “Coloured.” Podcast Episodes |
The guys are on a brief hiatus, so in the meantime, here is a fun episode from September, 2016. We'll be back soon with a brand new episode! An impromptu, crazy, and revealing conversation about God nearly derails this episode almost before it has started! It’s funny and serious, and Tony may need to ask for forgiveness! Also, the guys introduce the proprietors of Washington D.C.’s most unique music venue, Songbyrd. It’s a cafe, restaurant, and bar, where you can celebrate the surprising return of vinyl music at amazing listening parties, AND hear the latest up-and-coming artists LIVE. It’s VERY cool. And we listen to some records! Plus: Gary goes to the movies, and an odd “Celebrity Encounter”. Can we get an “Amen”?! NOTE: For a schedule of upcoming Songbyrd events, check out www.songbyrddc.com, visit them on Facebook at “Songbyrd Music House”, and follow them on Twitter, @songbyrddc.
