Eventually, a plan emerges to investigate the depths of the mine further, using Dona riding a polymorphed Ursus as a giant spider, and Thorak using beast sense on him. What they find, or rather what they think they sensed, leaves the three with more questions and uneasiness. Eventually, they briefly reconnect over drinks and attempt to put their heads together to discuss their findings. Bob & Thorak put their heads together and determined that some of the markings they had found correlated with the King in Yellow. That evening, plans are made to set up lodging in one of the abandoned homes, and sleep in shifts to catch any strange activity happening from an adjacent building. Bob would act as bait, and the other party members would swoop in if anything went awry. If only things were that simple. That evening. Keith Benjamin, co-founder of Uptown Hospitality Group in Charleston, tells the story of how throwing massive Penn State tailgates set him on a 20-year path from NYC bartender to operator of six concepts—while raising three kids under five. After buying small equity stakes in New York bars and becoming an operating partner at 29, he felt pulled to Charleston and went all-in on a $5M buildout of Uptown Social, a 10,000 sq. ft. sports bar and nightlife hub inside a 1915 building. He recalls surviving COVID—shutting down 48 hours after his wedding—then creating Bodega, a New York-style breakfast sandwich brand that grew from a parking-lot pop-up to multiple locations. Uptown Hospitality later added Share House, the upscale tavern By the Way (with partners from Southern Charm), and The Waverly, a wedding venue. Through rapid growth, thin margins, seasonality, and crushing liquor liability laws, Keith stays centered on preparation, service, and his belief that restaurants and bars are the emotional backbone of a community—and that operators carry that responsibility on their shoulders. 10 Takeaways Hospitality people “run into the fire.” You're either wired for the chaos and unpredictability of restaurant ownership or it will spit you out. Preparation beats the playbook. Every shift changes at minute one; the only constant is how ready your team is for the unexpected. Tailgates were the training ground. Running $40K-per-season Penn State tailgates taught Keith energy management, leadership, and crowd control. From golden handcuffs to ownership. High-earning NYC bartending could have trapped him, but he insisted on a path to management and equity. Charleston was the “chips all in” leap. With no collateral, Keith borrowed from friends and family to take on a 25-year lease and rebuild a 1915 building. COVID nearly crushed the dream—but sparked Bodega. Forced shutdowns led to launching a breakfast-sandwich concept that quickly exploded in popularity. Growth exposed growing pains. Opening multiple concepts while having three young kids humbled him and revealed how thin the margins can be. Food-heavy concepts are a different math. Booze-driven venues thrive; a full-service breakfast-and-lunch model did not, leading to a fast pivot to QSR. Liquor liability laws threaten the industry. South Carolina's rules once assigned 100% blame to anyone who served one drink to someone later in a wreck, pushing insurance premiums into the stratosphere. Service and community are the lasting moats. With heavy competition and rising closures, the only real differentiator is how you make people feel—because restaurants are the heart of every community.

Clapham begins as a riverside outpost on the Archbishop's side of the Thames, a little upstream from the City's bustle. Its story kicks off with the memorable wedding feast of Osgod Clapa's daughter, a moment of Anglo-Saxon high life set against reed thatch, woodsmoke and river mud. From there, the place grows by accretion and accident: manor lands, market gardens, pious foundations, and in time a Georgian dreamworld of airy squares where the great and the good came to polish their consciences. The Clapham Sect take the stage, plotting abolition and reform over prayer meetings and polite tea. Then comes the nineteenth century, the railways, the villas, the commuters, the whole swirling transformation of London pushing south. By the time we reach the present day, Clapham is a patchwork of leafy commons, handsome terraces, lively high streets and echoes of the visionaries who once made it a moral powerhouse.

Registration opens Monday, December 1st.   [02:39] Thoughts from Paul:   We have all heard the word recovery, but what does that mean? And does it ever end? Paul recently came across a line he likes that says, "If substance use or drinking no longer interferes with your ability to live a productive and loving life, then recovery has been achieved."   Using the logic of this line, Paul shares with us several ways that we can see if recovery has been achieved. Maybe you'll have to (or get to) attend meetings or chats for the rest of your life or maybe your recovery has already been achieved. So now what?   A simple answer is don't go back to drinking but in addition to that, sticking with the pack or community that helped you achieve recovery in the first place is a good start.   [07:54] Paul introduces Robyn:   Robyn is 49 and she lives in Columbia, SC with her husband, stepdaughter and two pit bulls. She is an office manager for a transportation company and enjoys reading, playing games and spending time with her family. Robyn was previously interviewed on episode 306.   Robyn grew up very shy and quiet and never really felt she fit in. The desire to rebel was building up and when she moved from Maine to South Carolina towards the end of high school, she viewed it as an opportunity to try new things including alcohol and other drugs.   After graduating high school, Robyn met someone and ended up getting married at the age of 18. She didn't realize the issues he had, and it was her first exposure to an abusive relationship with an addict.   Fortunately, she was able to escape that relationship but jumped right into another one that she considers her first real relationship. Their drinking looked normal for their age but over time, it started to create cracks in their relationship, and they split up soon after moving away from friends and family.   Feeling abandoned again and not knowing anyone, Robyn started going out and meeting people at bars alone after work. The relationships she had were with others who partied like she did, which helped her ignore the addictions that were creeping in. Her codependent nature found her feeling stuck in another abusive relationship, but over time she was able to start pulling away and made attempts to regulate her drinking.   After their break-up, Robyn began a close friendship with a friend from work. With his influence and help, she began to explore her traumas and started to organically cut back on her drinking as he rarely drank. They eventually began a relationship, and Robyn happily assumed the role of stepmother to his two children. She still drank, but it looked very different, and "mommy wine culture" made it seem ok.   After the sudden death of Robyn's mother, she took on the role of caretaker to her stepfather. This meant helping him with his grief and moving him closer to her. The drinking was beginning to become unmanageable. In September 2017, she discovered the upside of quitting drinking through a Google search that led her to Holly Whittaker and Annie Grace.   Upon discovering that going alcohol free could be a good thing, Robyn began to read a lot of quit lit and found podcasts. She told her husband about her struggles and felt a weight lift immediately. A few months later she joined Café RE and being part of a community was life changing. There were several stops and starts and she almost gave up quitting just before the announcement of the first Ditching the Booze course.
