CPG's next big ideas often emerge in unexpected places. In this episode, we explore what founders across food and beverage can learn from the rapid rise of hard sodas and hard sports drinks, as alcohol brands borrow from health, wellness and functionality to connect with younger consumers. The Taste Radio team is joined by Brewbound reporter Zoe Licata to discuss why familiar flavors, better-for-you positioning and shifting consumer behaviors are fueling these fast-growing categories—and whether they're poised for long-term success or destined to become another fleeting trend. They also unpack the surprising split between Costco and Deschutes Brewery, what it reveals about the evolving role of private label and retail strategy, and why Guinness has become one of the world's hottest beer brands by winning over an entirely new generation of drinkers. Show notes: 0:20: Harry Calling. Inspired Imbibing. $40M Is A Crooked Number. Lyte Come Lately. Crafty Costco. – Zoe and John share their experiences of seeing Harry Styles perform at Wembley Stadium and discuss how drinking culture among younger consumers in the U.K. differs from that in the U.S. The conversation explores Gen Z's evolving relationship with alcohol, the pandemic's lasting impact on drinking habits, and how brands are leaning into nostalgia and familiar flavors to connect with legal-age younger consumers. They also examine why alcohol companies are borrowing cues from the better-for-you beverage category, and the marketing challenges of positioning products with wellness-inspired messaging despite alcohol's inherent health limitations. Along the way, they spotlight the surprising rise of alcoholic sports drinks modeled after electrolyte beverages and viral drinking trends like BORGs. The discussion then turns to beer, where the hosts unpack the unexpected end of Costco's long-running private-label partnership with Deschutes Brewery, producer of the retailer's popular Kirkland Signature Helles Lager and Vintage Ale. The episode concludes with a look at Guinness' remarkable resurgence, exploring how the iconic stout has become one of beer's biggest success stories by winning over younger consumers through social media, the viral "Split the G" challenge, and the growing realization that it's lighter, more sessionable, and far more approachable than many first-time drinkers expect. Brands in this episode: Simply, Fresca, Owl's Brew, Bai, Crooked Pop, Poppi, Super Lyte, Surfside, Stateside Hard Seltzer, Gatorade, Spiked Ade, Pedialyte, Electrolit, Hoist, Deschutes, Guinness, Diet Pepsi

The Disney version of Johnny Appleseed has a cheerful barefoot man in a tin pot hat scattering apple seeds for grateful pioneers to bake into pies. The real John Chapman collected his seeds for free from cidery waste, planted them into strategically fenced nurseries on land he bought ahead of the settlement line, and sold the resulting trees to colonists who used the apples almost exclusively to make hard cider and applejack brandy. He died owning 1,200 acres across three states but never touched the money, because his Swedenborgian faith taught him that suffering in this life meant blessings in the next. He wore coffee sacks as shirts, went barefoot through Ohio winters, and entertained settler children by sticking needles into his calloused feet. Today's guest is Isaac Fitzgerald, author of *American Rambler: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed*. We discuss how Chapman's father was a Minuteman who fought at Concord and later ended up in debtor's prison, why the Northwest Indian War of the 1790s, one of the worst military disasters in early American history, created the very frontier Chapman would spend his life planting, and how a forgotten Irish frontiersman named Dan McQuay who walked 1,200 miles home from New Orleans through hostile wilderness may have been the real inspiration for Chapman's rambling life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome back to this week's episode of Trudge Report. Thank you for supporting the show.We kick things off catching up on birthday parties, neighborhood garage sale adventures, putt-putt victories, MLB check-in, and a memorable date night at a burlesque show.In the recovery segment, we tackle one of the most debated topics in recovery today: the symptom of drinking and drug use versus the disease and spiritual malady. We share our own experiences with removing drugs and alcohol and why that is not enough. How accountability fits into the process and why it is the spirit that needs healing. The conversation expands into harm reduction, medication-assisted treatment, California sobriety, and whether replacing one substance with another can ever lead to lasting freedom. We also discuss why different recovery paths exist, what genuine sobriety has meant in our own lives, and why the ultimate goal isn't simply surviving addiction, but building a life that's worth living. Recovery isn't just about what we stop doing. It's about becoming the kind of person who no longer needs to escape life in the first place."The desire for strong drink is the equivalent, on a low level, of the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness, expressed in medieval language: the union with God."— Carl JungDon't forget to like, share, rate, and download the podcast on all of your listening platforms. One of the biggest challenges your teen will face when they enter college is self-management. Managing what they eat, managing alcohol , managing stress, managing sleep , managing relationships, exercise and their time. Self- management is everything for the college student without it they don't have their health and they definitely won't make the grade. Jill and Dave Henry met coaching high school sports in Los Angeles and have been working with teens for nearly fifteen years. With every graduating class, they've fielded their student-athletes' concerns about the transition to college. Determined to help, the Henrys decided to leverage their combined professional skills in research, study design, data analysis, and storytelling (Jill is a veteran statistics teacher, Dave is a Peabody-award winning TV and film editor) to create a fun yet informative resource with the goal of preparing all students to enjoy college without sacrificing their health. Their just released book The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed---How to Manage Food, Booze, Stress, Sex, Sleep, and Exercise on Campus was published in June 2021. This interview is filled with great research, interesting stories, and practical information including how to get your teen to read this book. Episode 21, “Baffles, Booze & Bad Choices,” asks the hard questions: why rimfire mostly stops at .22, why we keep doing this show, and how much drinking is too much drinking before the wheels fully come off. Gat-Lab gets sucked into benchrest rimfire, learns some scope lessons, and blows out a ShiftZero PLA baffle, while ARDREW sights in the Ruger American Rimfire and Franklin Armory F17 before getting personally disrespected by the Bergara BMR. Dusky goes full holster goblin with Quiet Frog work, Beretta .380 testing, Hornofdaddy “science,” and bad testing done with great enthusiasm, while Dan contributes the powerful energy of having absolutely nothing. By the end, the captain, lawyer, doctor, and Not Sure have produced rimfire theory, centerfire detours, baffle carnage, questionable sobriety, and enough bad choices to make Episode 21 feel exactly as sharp as it deserves to be.

For many LGBTQ+ people, the pub wasn't just somewhere to grab a drink—it was one of the few places where they could safely be themselves. For decades, bars and clubs became places of acceptance, community and belonging. But when alcohol becomes woven into your identity and social life, what happens when you decide to stop drinking? For many people, giving up alcohol means changing what they drink. For many LGBTQ+ people, it can also mean changing where they belong. This week, Victoria sits down with Karl Considine, public speaker, advocate and Ambassador for Alcohol Change UK. Karl has become one of the leading voices in the UK's alcohol-free movement, using honesty, humour and lived experience to challenge old ideas about sobriety. Karl is helping a new generation build confidence, connection, and identity without alcohol. Through his work, he has helped show that a life without alcohol isn't about missing out—it's about creating more connection, joy and possibility.Together, they explore the powerful relationship between booze and queer culture. They discuss why LGBTQ+ communities experience higher rates of alcohol and substance misuse than the general population, the role discrimination and minority stress can play, and why creating alcohol-free spaces has never been more important. It's an honest conversation about identity, connection, loneliness, community and what it means to build a life where you don't need alcohol to feel like you belong. Whether you're part of the LGBTQ+ community or simply curious about why our relationship with alcohol is shaped by so much more than willpower, this episode is full of compassion, insight and plenty of laughs along the way.

Traditionally, summer (and the 4th of July specifically) have been opportunities for drinks brands of all kinds to (sometimes literally) wrap themselves in the American flag to move product. Yet even with the country's 250th anniversary just days away, it seems like relatively few are doing so this year. Is that because the current American political landscape is so fractious? Is patriotism and American pride at a low point, especially amongst the types of folks who tend to make that kind of decision? Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss that, plus how that kind of branding compares to more overtly targeting one political party or movement. The Serpent's Strait Ch. 12As Thorak turns to throw the flaming javelin, the priest laughs maniacally. Thorak gives him some parting words for his patron, Hastor. With that, the party runs like hell to escape the inevitable blast, most of the members falling unconscious in the process. Chan, being one of the lucky ones, heals and brings back her comrades from the brink of death in tandem with Bob. Dona casts Pass Without Trace as the group slips away from the crowd of onlookers, and Chan stays behind to confirm a body. The group slips out to the outskirts of the city to rest up and gather themselves until Chan comes back with confirmation that the priest died in the explosion. Their luck isn't that good as Chan realizes that the priest escaped and will likely be back at the mines. Tired, battered, and bruised, they decide it's probably best for a long rest if they are to intercept the priest to put an end to him once and for all.During the night, while on watch outside the mining town of Blackburn, Chan informs Ursus that "it's happening again." The large bonfire and madness celebration of the denizens of the town. The party makes their way towards the mines after their past selves leave the town, and the tension is palpable. It's been a stressful few days, and their well-laid plans have been thwarted. In the mines, they can feel a palpable sense of unease amongst them all. They are greeted by the mad priest, and pleasantries are short before the fight begins. It's a long, drawn-out, and frustrating fight. Spells are thrown from both sides; they temporarily lose their monk, and key players are immobile for most of the fight. How this ends is anyone's guess. We can only hope that the party comes out on top. The 10-Car Crash That Exposed Her Secret Addiction w/ Elisa Saunders | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this episode of the Hopeaholics Podcast, Elisa Saunders shares an incredibly raw story of addiction, trauma, survival, and the long road to recovery after decades of chaos behind the scenes of both alcoholism and the treatment industry. Elisa spent nearly 30 years drinking while maintaining the image of a functioning professional, all while cycling through alcohol, Xanax, cocaine, and the kind of self-destruction that nearly killed her. She opens up about the pain of childhood abuse, the emotional wounds that followed her into adulthood, and how addiction became both an escape and a prison she couldn't break free from. The conversation dives into her time working in the treatment world during some of its most corrupt years, where she witnessed body brokering, fraud, and the exploitation of vulnerable people seeking help. Elisa also shares the terrifying consequences of her own addiction, including a DUI, a devastating ten-car pileup, and the moment she realized she was either going to get sober or die. Even after getting clean, she reveals the brutal emotional reality of early recovery, including the shame, depression, and suicidal thoughts she had to fight through without numbing herself. Today, Elisa uses her story and experience to advocate for ethical treatment, real recovery, and better solutions for people trapped in addiction.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. We're all hooked on something. Here's the way out, according to an MD who became a beloved nun. Sister Dang Nghiem, MD, ("Sister D") was born in 1968 in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and an American soldier. She lost her mother at the age of twelve and immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen with her brother. Living in various foster homes, she learned English and went on to earn a medical degree from the University of California – San Francisco. After suffering further tragedy and loss, she quit her practice as a doctor to travel to Plum Village monastery in France founded by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, where she was ordained a nun in 2000, and given the name Dang Nghiem, which means adornment with nondiscrimination. She is the author of a memoir, Healing: A Woman's Journey from Doctor to Nun (2010), and Mindfulness as Medicine: A Story of Healing and Spirit (2015). This episode is part of our monthlong Do Life Better series. We talk about: Sister D's Buddhist version of the 12 step program, which is a combination of two canonical buddhist lists: the 4 Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path How willpower doesn't fit into the Buddhist path of understanding and working with addiction How to change addiction at its root Practical applications of mindfulness Self-compassion The importance of social support Her thoughts on our relationships to our phones And more Related Episodes: This Episode Will Make You Stronger | Sister Dang Nghiem The Science Of Manifestation | James Doty Sign up for Dan's newsletter here Follow Dan on social: Instagram, TikTok Ten Percent Happier online bookstore Subscribe to our YouTube Channel Our favorite playlists on: Anxiety, Sleep, Relationships, Most Popular Episodes Full Shownotes: https://www.meditatehappier.com/podcast/tph/sister-d-899 Additional Resources: Plum Village Deer Park Monastery Deer Park Monastery YouTube channel For an exclusive offering related to this episode, go to www.DanHarris.com

Send us Fan MailDo we have a brand new whiskey on our hands? We sure do! Was it created in conjunction with a brewery not too far away from the distillery that made it? Sure was! But, here's the thing: we're doing more than just reviewing it this week. We're doing a heckuva review AND pairing it with beer! Who would've thought to do something like THAT? Couldn't tell ya! Anyway, it's a good episode and definitely doesn't get a little crazy towards the end! Proboschopes, Corn Liquor & God's Fodder. . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). This week on Sober Awkward, Vic sits down with TJ Power, a well-known neuroscientist, author of the Sunday Times bestseller The DOSE Effect, and the founder of the DOSE Lab. He is a leading voice in demystifying brain chemistry, focusing on helping people manage digital burnout, phone addiction, and overstimulation in the modern world.TJ shares his own story of changing his relationship with alcohol, including a powerful epiphany at a music festival that made him completely rethink what connection, fun and presence really mean. Together, they explore the surprising similarities between alcohol addiction and phone addiction, and why both are fuelled by the same dopamine-driven reward systems in the brain. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Vic has a rather uncomfortable realisation of her own. Eight years sober and feeling quite smug about no longer disappearing into bottles of wine, she suddenly discovers she's been disappearing into something else instead… her phone. In a moment that feels a bit like being caught snogging behind the bike sheds, Vic realises she may be neglecting her children in exactly the same way she used to neglect them with alcohol. Not physically absent, but mentally elsewhere. Half listening. Half scrolling. Forever saying, “Just one second, darling…”It's a surprisingly emotional moment as TJ explains that the dopamine hits from our phones aren't a million miles away from the rewards we chase through alcohol, and Vic starts to wonder whether she's simply swapped one distraction for another. This episode isn't about throwing your phone in the sea or moving to a cave. It's about becoming curious about the habits that quietly shape our lives. And make sure you listen right to the end, because Vic returns with a surprising update after attempting her own digital detox weekend.A fascinating conversation that might just make you question your scrolling as much as your drinking.Find TJ here - @tjpower@doselab - Order the book now - https://a.co/d/0fghgGAcwww.thedoselab.com
